Encrypted WhatsApp Message Recovered From Westminster Terrorist's Phone

Bruce66423 brings word that a terrorist’s WhatsApp message has been decrypted “using techniques that ‘cannot be disclosed for security reasons’, though ‘sources said they now have the technical expertise to repeat the process in future.'” The Economic Times reports:
U.K. security services have managed to decode the last message sent out by Khalid Masood before he rammed his high-speed car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and stabbed to death a police officer at the gates of Parliament on March 22. The access to Masood’s message was achieved by what has been described by security sources as a use of “human and technical intelligence”…
The issue of WhatsApp’s encrypted service, which is closed to anyone besides the sender and recipient, had come under criticism soon after the attack. “It’s completely unacceptable. There should be no place for terrorists to hide. We need to make sure that organisations like WhatsApp, and there are plenty of others like that, don’t provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other,” U.K. home secretary Amber Rudd had said.
Security sources say the message showed the victim’s motive was military action in Muslim countries, while the article adds that though ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, “no evidence has emerged to back this up.”

EPA Officially Removes Its Climate Change Sub-site

Well, it took 100 days but the EPA has finally removed the climate change section of its website. An agency spokesman explained that the information that has been collected on the page over the last 20 years posed a problem because it contradicted the administration’s denial of man-made climate change.

Hacker Leaks Entire Season of Netflix Show after Extortion Demand Not Met

A hacker group called The Dark Overlord has reportedly leaked the entire fifth season of Orange is the New Black after Netflix failed to pay them 50 BTC ($66,142). This is probably a big upset for the streaming company, as the episodes were not set to debut until June. Interestingly, the hacker group supposedly has their hands on “hundreds of GBs of unreleased and non-public media,” as their infiltration point was a Hollywood studio.

DataBreaches.net was able to determine that the victim studio was Larson Studios, Inc., an award-winning audio post-production studio in Hollywood. TDO would later confirm their identity. TDO would not reveal the attack method nor how much the ransom demand was, but DataBreaches.net was able to obtain a copy of a contract both TDO and a representative of Larson allegedly signed. The contract, signed December 27, indicated that the studio would pay TDO 50 BTC by January 31. TDO signed the contract as “Adolf Hitler.” The signature of the company representative was indecipherable, but TDO claimed that it was the CFO of the firm who signed.

MIT Invents Robot That Can 3D-Print Buildings

Not that anyone wants to live in a dome that looks like cream cheese, but it is nice to see more headway on speedy, automatic building construction. It only took what I call MIT’s “swivel bot” 14 hours to construct the framework for a potential hideout, which would be finished using concrete. The ultimate goal for these is automated development in remote regions such as Antarctica, or Mars, even. Real-life StarCraft?

The system consists of a tracked vehicle that carries a large, industrial robotic arm, which has a smaller, precision-motion robotic arm at its end. This highly controllable arm can then be used to direct any conventional (or unconventional) construction nozzle, such as those used for pouring concrete or spraying insulation material, as well as additional digital fabrication end effectors, such as a milling head. Unlike typical 3-D printing systems, most of which use some kind of an enclosed, fixed structure to support their nozzles and are limited to building objects that can fit within their overall enclosure, this free-moving system can construct an object of any size.

Wikipedia Is Being Blocked In Turkey

The Turkey Blocks monitoring network has verified restrictions affecting the Wikipedia online encyclopedia in Turkey. The loss of availability is consistent with internet filters used to censor content in the country.

Access to Wikipedia has been blocked in Turkey as a result of “a provisional administrative order” imposed by the Turkish Telecommunications Authority (BTK)… Turkey Blocks said an administrative blocking order is usually expected to precede a full court blocking order in coming days. While the reason for the order was unknown early on Saturday, a statement on the BTK’s website said: “After technical analysis and legal consideration based on the Law Nr. 5651, ADMINISTRATION MEASURE has been taken for this website (wikipedia.org) according to Decision Nr. 490.05.01.2017.-182198 dated 29/04/2017 implemented by Information and Communication Technologies Authority.”

The BBC adds reports from Turkish media that authorities “had asked Wikipedia to remove content by writers ‘supporting terror.'”

Reggie Discusses NES Mini Demand, Offers Apologies

The president of NOA spoke with Time about the “unprecedented demand” of his company’s tiny NES and suggests that the reason for discontinuation is lack of resources. Reggie says it was just meant to be a holiday product and had no idea it would be that popular. How hard could it be to make these things?

…Fils-Aime did suggest the reason why the company pulled the brakes on a system amidst unprecedented demand. “Even with that extraordinary level of performance, we understand that people are frustrated about not being able to find the system, and for that we really do apologize,” he said. “But from our perspective, it’s important to recognize where our future is and the key areas that we need to drive. We’ve got a lot going on right now and we don’t have unlimited resources.”

Half-Life Finally Uncensored in Germany after 19 Years

I am fairly sure that most German gamers have figured out how to get the original, non-butchered version of Half-Life by now, but Deutschland has finally allowed the uncensored version of the classic game to be released—if Valve ever chooses to do so, that is. Over the last two decades, some gamers have been subjected to screws instead gore, NPCs that merely sit down instead of dying, and aliens evaporating into thin air. Will the censored copies be considered collector’s items now?

The changes to the German version of Half-Life are near-legendary. Most notable is the replacement of human enemies with robot soldiers who look like the Decepticon Shockwave signed up for Dad’s Army (as seen above) but there’s also a slew of bloodless deaths for aliens who simply evaporate moments later, while Barnacles particularly release a shower of screws rather than gore when killed. Friendly NPCs such as scientists and security guards aren’t visibly harmed killed if you shoot them but instead take a seat and the floor and give you a disappointed look.

The LEGO has landed: New set allows you to build the Moon rocket

LEGO

In 2014, Felix Stiessen and Valerie Roche proposed the idea for Saturn V rocket on the LEGO Ideas website. About a year later, their concept received the 10,000 votes necessary for formal consideration by LEGO. The company green-lighted the idea in 2016, and now we have our first look at this set.

As a full disclaimer, I am a lifelong fan of LEGOs and a lifelong fan of spaceflight. So don’t expect a rational review of this product by Ars. I mean, the final product will have three removable rocket stages, as well as the lunar lander and lunar orbiter. Drool.

Computer Pioneer Harry Huskey Dies At Age 101

Big Hairy Ian quotes the BBC:
Engineer Harry Huskey, who helped build many of the first ever computers, has died aged 101. Dr. Huskey was a key member of the team that built the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) which first ran in February 1946. ENIAC is widely considered to be one of the first electronic, general purpose, programmable computers. Dr. Huskey also helped complete work on the Ace — the Automatic Computing Engine — designed by Alan Turing.
U.C. Santa Cruz also remembers Huskey’s work on the Bendix G-15 in 1954, “a 950-pound predecessor to today’s laptops” which is sometimes hailed as the first personal computer (since it didn’t require a separate technician to run) — though each one cost over $50,000. The idea of an “electronic brain” was still so new, it led Huskey to an appearance on Groucho Marx’s radio show You Bet Your Life, where Groucho warned him that “They’re pretty tricky those machines! I wouldn’t trust ’em… They’ll turn on your like a mad dog, doctor!”
