Here’s Asa Butterfield in The Space Between Us, fighting every single thing in his body that tells him what fun is, keeping a grim face on while his character goes for a Martian joyride. Truly, this is the greatest acting challenge.

Why Your Acid Trips Last So Very, Very Long

People who have “experimented” with LSD know that its mind-altering effects can last upwards of 18 to 24 hours, which is unusual for a hallucinogenic drug. After nearly 30 years of research, scientists have finally mapped the physical structure of this fascinating molecule, revealing why it tends to linger in the…

Nvidia Rolls Out Shield Experience 5.0.2 To Original Shield Android TV

Owners of the older Shield have not been forgotten, as Nvidia has just released the Nougat update for the original device. The unit is now at 5.0.2, lining it up with the latest (2017) model, which got its update some weeks ago. Looking at the changelog, owners can look forward to GameStream in 4K, a Nvidia games app, and more, aside from the obvious update to Android 7.0. But as someone who already has an HTPC—can anyone think of a reason I should check this out? Thanks to Zarathustra for this one.

…big update! With Nougat, the SHIELD TV will finally be able to do picture-in-picture, but apps have to support it. Live Channels is the example given as an example of an app with support. The settings will also be less terrible in the new update. More exciting is the addition of Amazon Video to the SHIELD TV, which has been a missing piece of the streaming media puzzle for some time. NVIDIA is revamping some of its gaming features in this update as well. The SHIELD Games, GeForce NOW, and GameStream apps are being merged into the NVIDIA Games app. This might not be live right when you install the update as it requires an update via the Play Store too. GameStream is now supported in 4K HDR, and NVIDIA says latency has been improved. The cloud-based GeForce Now gaming service is getting a performance upgrade to roughly GTX 1080 levels of performance.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Cinematic Trailer 2

Okay…BioWare has managed to craft a beautiful game here, but I am not sure about your new squadmates—they look pretty uninspired compared to the likes of peeps like Thane and Garrus. Yeah, I know that I shouldn’t judge until I get to their backstories, but you had to admit that something seems off. Did I just see a female Turian?

Confessions of a Gaming Chair Reviewer

We told you guys last week how I hornswaggled myself into becoming a “gaming furniture reviewer,” which in itself is a fairly amusing story. It did however produce quite a lot of conversation in the forums. A lot of you wanted to see the unboxing and construction procedure of the Vertagear Triiger 350 as the chair seemed to have a lot fairly complicated features, so I did that for you. We got a new 4K camera in to shoot tech videos going forward, so this seemed to be a great time for a camera test. Warning on the video, it is just a single shot with no mic, but you can watch it on a 4K display and see all kinds of detail. Probably some you want to see, and others you don’t since I am in frame most of the time.

All that said, I have got a solid day with my rather large frame sitting in this chair now, and will probably give it a month or so before I write a “review” which will be totally subjective and meaningless to anyone without my actual ass. It is pretty damn cool looking though and seems to be incredibly well built. Time will tell.

On Riverdale, the CW's Addictive Archie Soap, Friendship Is Magic

From the opening moments of Riverdale, you will either decide it’s too over-the-top for you or fall in love with its commitment to being as ridiculous as possible. But if you stick with it, you’ll find that there’s a lot more heart to the show than you expected. It’s weird, campy, beautiful, and delightful. I…

Twitter Scrambles For Next Big Feature, Bets On Merging Tweets, Hashtags, Moments

Twitter is introducing a long requested feature: A better way to discover people, events and trends.
The company is introducing Explore, a tab that the company says will be a home for the most popular and relevant content on the platform. From a report: In a blog post today, product designer Angela Lam said the addition will house Trends, Moments, Search and live video. “Over the past year, we’ve been exploring different ways to make it simpler for people to find and use Trends, Moments, and Search,” Lam wrote. “During our research process, people told us that the new Explore tab helped them easily find news, what’s trending, and what’s popular right now.” Explore — which will begin rolling out for iOS today and for Android within the next few weeks — is similar to what Twitter has been testing with some users a few months back. The news also comes just a few weeks after CEO Jack Dorsey used his own account to crowdsource suggestions for what users think Twitter could do to improve the experience.

Amazon Sells Out of 1984 as America Decides to Read a Goddamn Book for Once

George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 occupied the number one spot on Amazon’s best-selling books list yesterday, where it remains today. A cautionary tale about a brutal, amoral dictator has evidently felt relevant to people lately. But as of today, Amazon—the world’s largest bookseller—is unable to keep up with…

Sen. Franken asks AT&T to prove Time Warner merger is good for customers

US Senate Democrats led by Al Franken (D-Minn.) yesterday challenged AT&T to prove that its proposed purchase of Time Warner will benefit the public interest. Franken’s letter comes as AT&T attempts to avoid a Federal Communications Commission review of its $85.4 billion Time Warner purchase. In an FCC review, the company would have to file what’s known as a “public interest statement.” This detailed document—the one AT&T filed for its DirecTV purchase was 349 pages long—is meant to prove that a merger is good for the public instead of merely being good for the merging companies.

But AT&T and Time Warner only have to seek an FCC review if Time Warner transfers FCC licenses to AT&T, and the companies have been working up a plan in which Time Warner would transfer or sell those licenses to someone else.

Franken isn’t happy about that. His letter, cosigned by 11 other Democrats and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), asked AT&T to provide a public interest statement even if the company skips an FCC review.
