There’s a great 2D Mario game buried in the busted 3DS Super Mario Maker

Enlarge / Super Mario Bros. 3 looks really different than I remember…
When I first heard that Nintendo was porting what is likely my favorite Wii U game to the fully portable Nintendo 3DS, I was excited. When I heard that the 3DS version of Super Mario Maker would severely limit the online sharing functions that helped make the Wii U version so special, I was skeptical. When I actually played the game this week, though, I ended up surprised that the limited level builder also came packed with built-in levels that form one of the most enjoyable 2D Mario experiences in years.
But I’m getting a little ahead of myself. At its core, level-building base, Super Mario Maker for 3DS is a pretty faithful reconstruction of the Wii U original. Just as in its console cousin, you use a stylus to place blocks, coins, items, enemies, doors, pipes, and all manner of other Mario series staples to create the levels of your dreams. You can still choose between four classic Mario games for core themes (Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros.), each with slightly different physics, items, and moves for Mario to use.
The level-crafting interface feels a tad more cramped on the 3DS’ smaller touch screen, but you can temporarily move unnecessary elements off screen to get more real estate to work with. Switching from editing to playing is a tad more annoying on the 3DS, too, since you have to wait for the level to shift from the bottom screen to the wider top screen and back with each switch.

GoPro Slashes 15% of Workforce, Shuts Down Entertainment Division
GoPro has announced that it will lay off more than 200 employees and freeze hiring, amounting to a reduction of about 15% of its workforce. As part of the restructuring, the company is also shutting down its entertainment division. In addition, the company said president Tony Bates will be leaving the company. From a report on Variety: Also Wednesday, GoPro also said Black Friday camera unit sales were up more than 35% year-over-year at leading U.S. retailers. GoPro said its Hero5 Black camera has been the best-selling digital-imaging device in the U.S. since it launched Oct. 2, citing NPD Group data. GoPro shares climbed more than 4% in premarket trading Wednesday on the news. The move appears to spell the end of the struggling company’s ambitions to branch out beyond device sales into the entertainment biz, which had included plans to produce original shows. The GoPro entertainment unit has been led by Ocean MacAdams, who previously held programming posts at MTV, Warner Music Group, and the Madison Square Garden Co., after Zander Lurie left in January to become CEO of SurveyMonkey. The division at one point had about 200 staffers, including Bill McCullough, who produced award-winning sports documentaries for HBO, and Joe Lynch, who previously led Time Inc.’s live-streaming initiatives.

Early Core i7-7700K Testing Reveals Higher Clocks And Power Usage
According to the crew over at the Tech Report, a website owned by an AMD employee, supposed leaked Intel Core i7-7700K benchmarks shows higher clock speeds, performance and power usage from Intel’s upcoming Kaby Lake processor.
The basic specs of the Core i7-7700K that Tom’s reports are about in line with the rumors and leaks we’ve seen so far. Tom’s says the chip has a 4.2 GHz base clock and a 4.5 GHz Turbo speed, and its four cores and eight threads slip into a 95W TDP—up slightly from the Core i7-6700K’s 91W figure. That TDP increase is borne out by a small increase in power consumption in the site’s testing—141W under a stock-clocked Prime95 Small FFTs load for the Kaby Lake chip, up from 133W for the Core i7-6700K running the same torture test.

Facebook Mistakenly Removes Zuckerberg's Posts On Fake News
Maybe this wasn’t caused by an error as Facebook claims. Maybe the new system works so good at detecting BS that it immediately started editing Mark Zuckerberg’s posts.
Facebook accidentally removed the wrong kind of fake news stories. Two recent posts from CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressing the controversy over fake news spreading on Facebook were briefly deleted on Tuesday. The posts re-appeared after media outlets called attention to the matter. In one post from November 12, Zuckerberg tried to play down concerns about the impact of fake news on the election.

1 million Android accounts compromised by Android malware called Gooligan

(credit: Ron Amadeo)
Researchers say they’ve uncovered a family of Android-based malware that has compromised more than 1 million Google accounts, hundreds of them associated with enterprise users.
Gooligan, as researchers from security firm Check Point Software Technologies have dubbed the malware, has been found in at least 86 apps available in third-party marketplaces. Once installed, it uses a process known as rooting to gain highly privileged system access to devices running version 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and KitKat) and version 5 (Lollipop) of Google’s Android operating system. Together, the vulnerable versions account for about 74 percent of users.
The rooted devices then download and install software that steals the authentication tokens that allow the phones to access the owner’s Google-related accounts without having to enter a password. The tokens work for a variety of Google properties, including Gmail, Google Photos, Google Docs, Google Play, Google Drive, and G Suite. In a blog post published Wednesday morning, Check Point researchers wrote:
