Amazon Unveils Inspire Online Education Service For Teachers and Schools

Amazon on Monday launched a new site called Amazon Inspire where K-12 teachers and schools can upload and access unlimited education and classroom resources such as videos, tests, projects, games, lesson plans with their peers across the country for free of charge. In a statement, the company said, “Our ultimate goal is for every teacher in every single subject to benefit from Amazon Inspire. When they walk into a classroom, we want every teacher to benefit from the collective knowledge, the collective insights and the experience of every single one of their peers.” GeekWire reports:It’s the latest in a series of moves by Amazon in the education technology market. The company acquired the TenMarks online math startup in 2014, and separately markets e-books and tablets for teachers and school districts. The company describes the project as an outgrowth of its involvement in the U.S. Department of Education’s GoOpen initiative. Amazon also provides technical resources and support for the department’s Learning Registry open database.

Rightscorp Pressures ISPs To Hijack Pirates Browsers

I have no idea how these people are still in business or why any ISP in its right mind would listen to them. The only thing Rightscorp is good at is losing millions of dollars every year and getting its ass handed to it in court.

Instead of merely forwarding settlement demands, Rightscorp proposes a system where the ISP hijacks subscribers’ browsers. Initially, this would only affect 10% of infringers but the number would gradually increase to 90%. The soft redirect will suspend Internet access until the subscribers acknowledge that they’ve read the notice. After five notices this switches to a hard redirect, which requires subscribers to pay up in order to browse the web again.

Winter Has Finally Come on Game of Thrones, and Now the Real War Begins

It’s taken six seasons, but Ned Stark has finally been proven right: Winter has come, and with it, the beginning of the end of Game of Thrones. As such, the show needed to start paring down its various storylines and plot threads, which it did last night with brutal efficiency. For those few players that remain, the time for games is over.

Google Ponders About a Chromebook Pro

Google is currently surveying people about what a Chromebook Pro should be like. VentureBeat’s report cites two people who recently shared the development on a forum. One user was asked the question, “How would you think a Chromebook Pro is different than a Chromebook?” whereas the other user was asked, “what a Chromebook Pro should be like in [his/her] opinion and what type of people would want to use it.” From the report:The word “Pro” would imply a high-end laptop running Chrome OS, just like, say, the MacBook Pro or the Surface Pro 4. But there are many other companies — Asus, Dell, HP, and Samsung, among others — that make Chromebooks, along with Google. It isn’t clear from these survey questions if Google is thinking about making a Chromebook Pro itself, just as it has made high-end Chromebook Pixel laptops, or if Google is just wondering how consumers would perceive a Chromebook Pro made by a third party. Meanwhile, Google last month published a job posting entitled “Quality Engineer, Chromebook Pixel,” suggesting that a third generation of that device could be on the way.Chromebooks are becoming increasingly popular. They outsold Mac for the first time in the United States earlier this year. The majority of the Chromebooks available today, however, pack in entry-level specifications, giving users very limited choice. Though we have seen devices like Chromebook Pixel, a range of high-end Chromebooks could entice even more customers.

That time when Littlefinger and Lyanna Stark promoted a comet landing

A still image from the movie Ambition. (credit: European Space Agency)

Littlefinger, the conniving and vulpine character in the Game of Thrones series who loves all of the Stark women, combined with one of them two years ago to promote the European Space Agency’s comet-chasing mission, Rosetta.

Aidan Gillen and Aisling Franciosi, who play Littlefinger and Lyanna Stark respectively, starred in the short film to hype the mission, which caught up to Comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko in 2014 and later sent the small Philae spacecraft to make a soft landing in November of that year. The movie, titled Ambition, is all the more chilling after Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, in which Franciosi (Lyanna Stark) plays a key role in finally revealing the true parentage of Jon Snow.

In the short film, Franciosi seems to be some kind of a jedi padawan in a far future Earth. As part of one lesson, Gillen recalls the Rosetta mission that had occurred in the distant past, explaining that it was about more a comet rendezvous. “We also wanted to show what was possible,” Gillen’s character explained.

Google’s own non-Nexus Android phone could launch this year—report

(credit: Ron Amadeo)

Google is preparing to release a branded phone by the end of 2016 in an effort to compete more directly with Apple’s iPhone, according to a report in The Telegraph this morning. It follows a similar report from The Information (subscription required) in February that stated Google wanted to take “greater control” over the design and building of Nexus phones.

“Sources familiar with the discussions” told The Telegraph that the search giant is in discussions with operators and manufacturers that would see it leap into hardware design above and beyond its current partnerships with the likes of LG and Huawei, which make its Nexus phones. Such a move wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented: the Pixel C Android tablet was developed entirely internally by Google.

Android is the operating system that powers roughly four in every five smartphones around the world, but so far Google has stuck to developing free software platforms, leaving handset design and manufacture to the likes of Samsung. The slight exception to the rule has been the company’s Nexus range, which serves as both an example to manufacturers of how to build an Android device, and offer consumers an entirely stock version of the operating system. The Telegraph‘s report doesn’t mention what will become of the initiative and phones like the well-received Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
