Tesla Reportedly Reaches Settlement To Buy Back Customer’s Nightmarish, Bug-Riddled Model X EV
From a technological standpoint, the Tesla Motors Model X is an amazing vehicle. The crossover impresses with its all-electric all-wheel-drive drivetrain, neck-snapping Ludicrous Mode and crowd pleasing Falcon Wing rear doors. However, it’s that last feature that has brought the most negative attention to the vehicle.

OnePlus 3 review: A great $400 phone you can actually buy

.related-stories { display: none !important; }

OnePlus is back with its fourth device, the OnePlus 3. The upstart Oppo subsidiary has slowly been maturing since entering the market in 2014, and the OnePlus 3 feels like the company’s first phone that “normal” people can safely consider.

The biggest reason is that OnePlus has done away with its lame invite-to-purchase system, meaning potential customers no longer have to fight to hand over their money. Thanks to that change, it really feels like there are no catches now: OnePlus is offering a Snapdragon 820, a whopping 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an aluminum body for $399, and it’s actually going to work with LTE networks outside of China.

Design

The OnePlus 3 is easily the best-made phone OnePlus has ever produced. The aluminum unibody is a big upgrade over the plastic-clad OnePlus One and 2, and it’s more durable than the glass-backed OnePlus X. The back design looks like an exact copy of an HTC One M9, but it’s hard to care too much about originality when the build quality is this good. Overall, the OnePlus 3 is as well made as a top-tier phone from HTC or Apple; it’s just offered at a much lower price.

Instant-replay table football

So, England, nominally the home of football, is out of the European Cup, having lost to Iceland. Iceland is a country with a population of 330,000 hardy Vikings, whose national sport is handball. England’s population is over 53 million. And we invented soccer.

Iceland’s only football pitch is under snow for much of the year, and their part-time manager is a full-time dentist.

I think perhaps England should refocus their sporting efforts on something a little less challenging. Like table football. With a Raspberry Pi on hand, you can even make it feel stadium-like, with automatic goal detection, slow-motion instant replay, score-keeping, tallying for a league of competitors and more. Come on, nation. I feel that we could do quite well with this; and given that it cuts the size of the team down to two people, it’d keep player salaries at a minimum.

This build comes from Stefan Wehner, who has documented it meticulously on GitHub. You’ll find full build instructions and a parts list (which starts with a football table), along with all the code you’ll need.

Well done Iceland, by the way. We’re not bitter or anything.

Airbnb sues San Francisco over short-term rental law it helped create

It’s not every day that a major tech company sues its hometown. But that’s exactly what’s just happened: on Monday, Airbnb sued the City and County of San Francisco over a new law set to go into effect next month.

The new law expands upon a previous ordinance, which Airbnb itself helped initially draft. The earlier law went into effect in February 2015—it defined and began to regulate short-term rentals. The additional legislation, set to take effect in late July 2016, now requires that listings on sites like Airbnb clearly publish this new registration number and holds both the host and the “platform” (Airbnb) potentially civilly and criminally liable for non-compliance.

In its civil complaint, Airbnb argues that it should not be found liable under the new ordinance, as it is exempt under federal statute. Specifically, Airbnb says that it is protected under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—the famed law that protects “computer service” providers from being found liable for speech made by its users.

Study: 78% of Resold Drives Still Contain Readable Personal or Business Data

itwbennett writes: Blancco Technology Group, which specializes in data erasure, bought 200 secondhand PC storage drives (PDF) from eBay and Craigslist to see if they could recover any of the old data saved inside. Their findings: 78 percent of the drives contained residual data that could be recovered, 67 percent still held personal files, such as photos with location indicators, resumes and financial data, and 11 percent of the drives also contained company data, such as emails, spreadsheets and customer information. Only 10 percent had all the data securely wiped, Blancco said. The Consumerist points out that Blancco makes their money from promising secure data erasure, so the company has a “strong and vested interest in these results.” As for why so many of the drives contain unwanted information, the report says it has to do with the difference between “deleting” data and “erasing” data. Your files aren’t actually deleted when you drag them to the Trash or Recycle Bin, or by using the delete key — shocking, I know. You can format a drive to erase the data, but you have to be careful of the format commands being used. A quick format, which was used on 40% of the drives in the sample, still leaves some residual data on the drive for someone to possibly access. A full format, which was used on 14% of the drives, will do a better job in removing unwanted files, but it too may still miss some crucial information. The solution Blancco recommends: buy a tool to perform complete data erasure.
