Speedrunner Reprograms a Super Mario Game to Beat Itself

Speedrunners have long been exploiting 8-bit games by “reprogramming
” them. Pixel-perfect inputs can be used to trigger memory events, usually for the purpose of beating games in fractions of the time it would ordinarily take. A similar exploit exists in the classic Mario Game Boy game 6 Golden Coins, but it exists in a physical, semi-playable form. Welcome to glitch hell.

Several Major Flaws Found In Symantec Antivirus Software

How bad are the flaws found in Symantec antivirus? The Google security researcher that discovered the fatal flaws say they are “as bad as it gets.” If you use Symantec antivirus software, make sure you read this Project Zero blog post.

Today we’re publishing details of multiple critical vulnerabilities that we discovered, including many wormable remote code execution flaws. These vulnerabilities are as bad as it gets. They don’t require any user interaction, they affect the default configuration, and the software runs at the highest privilege levels possible. In certain cases on Windows, vulnerable code is even loaded into the kernel, resulting in remote kernel memory corruption.

To study possibly racist algorithms, professors have to sue the US

(credit: UrbanOasis.org)

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Attorney General of the United States, asking the court to declare a section of a 1980s-era anti-hacking law as “unconstitutionally overbroad.”

In the case, known as Sandvig v. Lynch, the ACLU argues on behalf of First Look Media Works and four professors who want to deploy bots and fake profiles to study possible racial discrimination in online advertising for housing and employment. The researchers haven’t been able to proceed because they’re afraid of being sued or prosecuted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).

The ACLU’s civil complaint points to examples in the media and in academia suggesting that such biases and unlawful practices may already be ongoing.

Google Found Disastrous Symantec and Norton Vulnerabilities That Are 'As Bad As It Gets'

Google’s Project Zero team has discovered a heap of critical vulnerabilities in Symantec and Norton security products. The flaws, the team says, allow hackers to completely compromise people’s machines by simply sending them malicious self-replicating code through unopened emails or un-clicked links. According to a Fortune report, the vulnerabilities affect millions of people who run the company’s endpoint security and antivirus software — all 17 enterprise products (Symantec brand) and eight consumer and small business products (Norton brand). Dan Goodin, reporting for Ars Technica:The flaws reside in the engine the products use to reverse the compression tools malware developers use to conceal their malicious payloads. The unpackers work by parsing code contained in files before they’re allowed to be downloaded or executed. Because Symantec runs the unpackers directly in the operating system kernel, errors can allow attackers to gain complete control over the vulnerable machine. Tavis Ormandy, a researcher with Google’s Project Zero, said a better design would be for unpackers to run in a security “sandbox,” which isolates untrusted code from sensitive parts of an operating system.
