Event horizon ringing damped by unstable space-time

Space-time gets very messy near the event horizon of a black hole, as this simulated view indicates. (credit: Andrew Hamilton; NSF )

Now that gravitational waves have been detected, theoreticians have been furiously speculating about what we might learn from our gravitational wave observatories. Now that we have a couple of observed black hole collisions under our belt, it is time to consider what we might study. There’s some speculation that, depending on the sort of physics at play, the event horizon of a black hole might be studied through gravitational waves.

For this to work, the gravitational wave signal has to change depending on what type of black holes are merging. A recent paper in Physical Review Letters indicates that, unfortunately, reality will probably not cooperate.

No bells on a black hole

When two black holes collide, gravitational waves are emitted as a result of a kind of relaxation process. So far, we have mostly been excited about the waves generated just before the merger, where the objects are spiralling into each other and emitting waves as they plunge through space at very high speed.

Istanbul Attack: A Grim Reminder Of Why Airports Are Easy Targets

An anonymous reader shares a FirstPost article:Even as I write this the echo of gunfire continues at Ataturk International Airport. For reasons that defy logic, Istanbul’s main airport has always been seen as a vulnerable target which only underscores the fact that all airports in the world are open to attack and fail-safe is not a viable option. At Ataturk, security is usually high, but the weak underbelly lies in vehicular traffic entering the airport being given cursory checks, pretty much like most airports which is why President Erdogan was able to say this sort of attack could have occurred anywhere. That is true. Airports are easy targets. That even though Turkey was aware of the chinks nothing much was done to up the security levels. If you take Delhi International as a prime example, the access to the terminal is scarcely blockaded and one can reach the entry points with ease, crossing a couple of indolent checkpoints and a roller fence. (Editor’s note: the article has been written by an Indian author, and so he uses an Indian airport as an example.) Indian airports are as porous as a sponge. Most of our airports are red-starred which places them in the inadequate category. Add to that the fact that several thousand VIPs are given privileges that make a pudding out of security and it indicates how easy peasy it would be to amble up to the terminal entrance. The weakness primarily lies in the absence of X-Rays and deterrent technology on approach. You practically can check in and get to immigration before being cleared for hazardous material.

Florida Man Sues Apple for $10 Billion

I don’t know if this guy will be successful in his suit against Apple but it’s kind of a shame that the guy didn’t get his device built back in 1992 because that thing would’ve kicked ass back then.

Florida resident Thomas S. Ross has filed a lawsuit against Apple this week, claiming that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod infringe upon his 1992 invention of a hand-drawn “Electronic Reading Device” (ERD). The court filing claims the plaintiff was “first to file a device so designed and aggregated,” nearly 15 years before the first iPhone.

Stephen Hawking: Pollution And 'Stupidity' Biggest Threats To Mankind

You have to admit, it’s hard to argue Stephen Hawking’s point when he says pollution and human “stupidity” remain the biggest threats to mankind. Hell, if we just focused on a cure for stupidity we could easily fix most of our other problems.

Professor Stephen Hawking says he believes pollution and human “stupidity” remain the biggest threats to mankind, while also expressing his concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in warfare. The world’s leading theoretical physicist argued “we have certainly not become less greedy or less stupid” in our treatment of the environment over the past decade, during an interview on Larry King Now, which is hosted on Ora TV.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update To Roll Out On August 2

Windows 10’s first major update — dubbed Anniversary Update — will be released to users on August 2, according to a blog post published by Microsoft (Archive link). The company presumably posted the blog post ahead of the original publication plans, and as a result, quickly pulled the story. Windows 10 Anniversary Update will bring with it a number of major changes including extensions to Edge, and improvements to Cortana and Hello biometric feature. It will also mark the end of the one-year free Windows 10 update offer for Windows 7 and Windows 8.x users.

This Infographic Lists 128 Words You Can Use Instead of “Very”

Our English teachers told us to avoid the word “very” because it’s weak and vague. They were right, and many times, we use “very” as a modifier for a word that could easily be replaced with a stronger, more accurate word. This infographic tells you what to use instead.
