Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up upscaled to 4k and 60fps

rickroll-4k.jpg

It was just a matter of time, but somebody upscaled Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up to 4k 60fps to make sure Rickrolling stays relevant and future proof. Now you can be surprised by the smooth stylings of Rick Astley’s majestic voice in 4k quality. Although really he only needed to upscale the first three seconds, because who has ever stayed on that page for longer than that?

Keep going for the full 4k Rickroll. Or is it…? It is.

There's a new Mortal Kombat movie and here's the trailer

mortal-kombat-trailer.jpg

This is the trailer for the new Mortal Kombat movie reboot. It looks like they’ve finally embraced the mindless violence of the video games as they seem to be pushing with this red band trailer. You’ve got ice ninja man, grappling hook spear man, electricity rice farmer man and others. So, yeah, this is pretty much exactly what I’ve been looking for in a Mortal Kombat movie and I’d be super excited if this was the 90’s and I was twelve.

Keep going for the full red band trailer. The red band means there’s blood.

NASA's Perseverance Rover will attempt a complicated Mars landing tomorrow

persaverence-mars-landing-rover.jpg

NASA’s Perseverance Rover will attempt to land on the most difficult terrain ever targeted on Mars tomorrow and this video breaks down what’s involved.

All landings on Mars are difficult, but NASA’s Perseverance rover is attempting to touch down in the most challenging terrain on Mars ever targeted.

The intense entry, descent, and landing phase, known as EDL, begins when the spacecraft reaches the top of the Martian atmosphere. Engineers have referred to the time it takes to land on Mars as the “seven minutes of terror.”

The landing sequence is complex and targeting a location like Jezero Crater on Mars is only possible because of new landing technologies known as Range Trigger and Terrain-Relative Navigation.

The Perseverance rover is set to land on the surface of Mars on February 18, 2021.

NASA previously landed their Spirit and Opportunity rovers using balloons, but I guess they wanted to show off their fancy new gadgets this time. For Perseverance they’re using an onboard guidance system to actually navigate to a decent spot before lowering the rover using a sky crane like they did with the Curiosity rover. Personally, I would’ve just doubled the amount of balloons, but my science education is from watching Inspector Gadget so what do I know?

Keep going for the full video. You can watch the live broadcast of the landing tomorrow starting at 11:15 a.m. PST / 2:15 p.m. EST.

Krispy Kreme has a Mars-themed doughnut to celebrate NASA's Perseverance landing on Mars tomorrow

mars-donut.jpg

To celebrate NASA’s Perseverance Rover landing on Mars tomorrow, Krispy Kreme is featuring a Mars-themed doughnut. It’s available for one day and they’re currently taking orders for pickup tomorrow.

A Chocolate Kreme-filled doughnut dipped in caramel icing with a red planet swirl and sprinkled with chocolate cookie crumbs. This limited-edition doughnut is available in shops and online for one day only.

Yes, yes, I’ll be eating a dozen doughnuts tomorrow to celebrate NASA. Because of space and I’m a fan of space and also Mars and NASA and space Mars things. That’s why I’m ordering 12 donuts and eating them all tomorrow. For space and science and Mars. Actually, to really show my support I should make it two dozen doughnuts. Because of science. I just love science. Delicious, delicious science.

You can order them here.

This guy replaced his bike wheels with saw blades to bike on ice

saw-bicycle-ice.jpg

Pretty much exactly what the title says. The only nonintuitive thing he does is attach little metal bars to the teeth of the saw blades so there’s more traction and also so he doesn’t cut through everything he rides over. Which kind of defeats the purpose of using saw blades, since now it’s basically like attaching chains to his bike tire. What’s the point of using saw blades if you’re going to remove the imminent risk of a fatal mishap?

Keep going for the full video. He shows trying to ride before and after attaching the metal bars so you get an idea of how poorly it worked as just saw blades. More badass, yes. Effective as an actual vehicle, not so much.

'City Guesser' is a video based geography guessing game

city-guesser-game.jpg

City Guesser is a browser-based game that let’s you try and guess a city based on a video from the point of view of a pedestrian walking around a city:

City Guesser is a geography based browser game that strives to provide an exceptional travel and guessing experience. City Guesser launched on August 13th, 2020, and welcomes thousands of geography-enthusiasts each day.

This game has become particularly difficult since I don’t even remember what the outside looks like anymore. For every hint I guessed the location of my sofa and TV and turns out I wasn’t even close once. What does…wind…feel…like?

You can try the game out for yourself here. It’s weirdly fun and a nice virtual travel escape.

Drifting Hot Wheels

drifting-hot-wheels.jpg

This is a Hot Wheels drifting kit put out by Tyotoys and it looks godamn cinematic. If they had zoomed in and cut out the hands from the shot you could’ve convinced me it was out of a Fast and Furious movie. I mean you’d probably have to edit in some buff guys and maybe an exploding submarine but you know what I mean.

Epic's MetaHuman Creator, a tool to create realistic real-time digital humans

unreal-engine-metahuman-creator.jpg

MetaHuman Creator is a cloud-streamed tool for creating realistic real-time digital humans that can be animated in Unreal Engine.

MetaHuman Creator is a cloud-streamed app that takes real-time digital human creation from weeks or even months to less than an hour–at an unprecedented standard of quality, fidelity, and realism. When your character is finished, you can export and download it, rigged and ready to animate in Unreal Engine.

It’s not quite photo-realistic, but it’s pretty damn impressive for something that just requires the pushing of a few buttons and sliders. Obviously they need to extend the tool for body types and obviously somebody will use it for porn. Everything always leads to porn.

Keep going for the introduction video as well as some samples or check out the official site here.

Attorney tries to convince judge he's not a cat during virtual court proceeding

zoom-cat-attorney.jpg

During a live stream of a virtual court proceeding, an attorney accidentally set themselves to a cat filter and had to convince a judge they weren’t actually a cat. You really need audio to appreciate the absurdity of the situation and to hear the anxiety in the attorney’s voice. The expression on the kitten is absolutely perfect because I’m 100% sure it’s the exact same expression the attorney had.

Keep going for the full amazing video. The pandemic has been pretty bad, but it’s also brought us videos like this so maybe it’s all been worth it?

Somebody took The Legend of Zelda cartoon and added the vocals from Beavis and Butthead

the-legend-of-beavis.jpg

KhalidSMShahin took The Legend of Zelda cartoon and synced up vocals from Beavis and Butthead. The result is remarkably good and the small touches like the mirror scene at 0:45 show just how much thought and care was put into something this stupid. It’s perfect.

Keep going for the full video. Obviously you need audio otherwise you’re just watching a silent episode of The Legend of Zelda cartoon. Also, make sure you keep watching for the postshow.

Jeff Bezos' laugh has gotten more evil the more rich he's become

jeff-bezos-laugh.jpg

Somebody did a very scientific analysis of Jeff Bezos’ laugh over time as he’s gotten progressively more rich. And by scientific I mean they just spliced together clips of him laughing. Has it changed? Definitely. Is it more evil? Only if you think cartoonishly evil laughing is evil. The cadence of the laugh itself seems the same, it’s just gotten deeper. Although it might just be all the children’s blood he’s been pumping into himself to achieve his goal of immortality.

Guy hatches and raises a stranded parrot egg

baby-parrot-egg.jpg

The music is a bit heavy handed, but this is an incredible video of a guy finding a stranded parrot egg and managing to hatch and raise it.

I found a tiny budgie egg at a pet shop. If I could incubate it, would I be able to raise it? With these big human hands? It’s mother had just been sold. This meant the egg would have no chance without me giving it a try.

It’s truly amazing that something that looks so disgusting can actually be so incredibly cute and touching. I went from scrunching my face up in revulsion to scrunching my face up trying to hold my tears in for the most adorable little parrot I ever did see.

Keep going for the full video that manages to restore a little faith in humanity. That might even be an understatement.

Mask that looks like you're wearing your mask wrong

maskalike-chin-mask.jpg

Maskalike, the company that makes masks that look like your face, now has a mask that looks like you’re wearing your mask wrong. You can obviously still wear the mask wrong, but assuming you wear it right it still looks like you’re wearing it wrong. It’s perfect for all those people who want to feel what it’s like to be judged by society as an idiot who wears their mask wrong but aren’t actually idiots who wear their mask wrong.

Super entertaining French ping pong show

secretin-purkart-ping-pong-show.jpg

This is video from Le Show Secrétin-Purkar, which was a comical ping pong show put on by French ping pong champions Jacques Secrétin and Vincent Purkart. It ran until 2007 with over 4,000 performances. Sadly, Secrétin died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 71.

It’s hard to even conceive that there would be such a thing called “a comical ping pong show” but that’s exactly what this was. There’s so much physical comedy I imagine somebody who has never even heard of ping pong would still find it super entertaining. It’s the kind of thing Charlie Chaplin or Lucille Ball would probably put together if either of them were super good at ping pong.

Keep going for the full video as well as one of their exhibition matches from 1990 in its entirety.

SpaceX Starship SN9 landing explosion captured in slow motion

spacex-starship-sn9-explosion.jpg

SpaceX Starship SN9 exploded yesterday while attempting to land and Cosmic Perspective captured the whole thing in slow motion.

High-speed cameras were rolling during the SpaceX Starship SN9 test flight in South Texas. For this mission we positioned a camera focusing exclusively on the landing pad to capture all the action during the last few moment of decent. The rest was history.

This is truly incredible footage. I’m not saying I want all SpaceX tests to end in explosions, but can we always get high-speed cameras focused on them just in case? The video is so high quality at 0:14 you can see a bird literally pooping itself trying to escape.

Keep going for the full video. It really looks like it’s out of a movie and a pretty good one at that.

Celebrities reenacted the entirety of The Princess Bride in their homes

the-princess-bride-home-movie.jpg

In the summer of 2020, Jason Reitman directed an at-home reenactment of The Princess Bride called Home Movie: The Princess Bride featuring a ton of celebrities (Adam Sandler, Charlize Theron, Pedro Pascal, John Cho, and Roman Mars just to name a few of the literal dozens).

The thing played out in 9 parts across Quibi which is why nobody saw it until some hero bootlegged the whole thing onto YouTube. And because Quibi is a thing that no longer exists, the whole video might actually stay up since there’s nobody to make a copyright claim against it. Also, this might be the only good thing to have come out of Quibi. I mean, other than the laughs at how much money they lost and how quickly they went under.

Keep going for the entire movie. The original Princess Bride is 1:38 and this comes in at 1:07, so I’m assuming they just edited out all the hardcore full penetration sex scenes.

Guy's mom made this incredibly detailed 'Mini Modern House' during quarantine

Scott T. Miller’s mom and step-dad made this incredibly detailed miniature house from scratch during quarantine and it not only comes with a man cave and game room, but also functioning electricity. The above shots have a cereal box and can of soup for scale, but the entire thread is worth checking out because this thing is bonkers.

Keep going for some more shots, including a video of the garage going up and down, or just check out the full thread here. It’s more detailed than I can convey and it’s hard to get a grasp until you actually click on all the pictures.

Orbiting the Moon in real-time

moon-orbit-real-time.jpg

Seán Doran constructed a 4-hour real-time orbit of the Moon using images from the Kaguya Orbiter. It’s exactly what it sounds like, which means it’s a 4 hour video of the Moon. The most interesting part is probably at 1:24:10 when you can see the Earth rise. The rest is just…moon. A lot of moon. Almost as much as your mom. Get it? Because she’s fat. Your mom is fat. And has a big butt. Because she’s fat.

Danny Macaskill mountain bikes down the Dubh Slabs on the Isle of Skye
