These Are the Best NAS and Hard Drive Sales on Black Friday

Network attached storage (NAS) devices are great for anyone who wants a prebuilt compact box that will back up their media collection, download files off the internet, and function as a Plex server. You can back up your photos, computer, and movie collection to a NAS drive and view or stream them on your smartphone or laptop, and there are some great deals on NAS boxes and hard drives for Black Friday. The latter is especially important since you’ll have to buy storage separately and your NAS won’t be of much use if you don’t have any hard drives.

The best Synology NAS devices on sale for Black Friday

Synology is among the most popular NAS brands, and these are the best deals on its popular models:

The best QNAP NAS devices on sale for Black Friday

QNAP is a competitor to Synology and has two popular models with great sales for Black Friday:

  • The 2-Bay QNAP TS-462-2G-US is going at $375 (from $470)

  • The 4-Bay QNAP TS-462-4G-US has been going down to $391, but it keeps going in and out of stock, so keep an eye on this one.

The best internal hard drives on sale for Black Friday

You’ll need internal hard drives to use with your NAS device, and several are on sale right now. It’s worth noting that you can’t use standard hard drives with your NAS—these devices are designed to be running 24×7, you need drives designed for that purpose. Some great examples examples include Seagate IronWolf drives, WD Red drives, or the Seagate Exos series, and here are the best deals on them:

The Best Black Friday Deals on Appliances

If you’ve been holding out on buying a new appliance in the hopes of nabbing a great deal, now may be the time to strike. There are spectacular savings to be had for Black Friday on major appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens, and dishwashers. We’re seeing discounts over 40% at Home Depot and Lowe’s, which eclipse all the other major retailers, on top brands like LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, and more. Here are the top savings.

Best Black Friday deals on refrigerators

Some of the most enviable fridges out there—including the Bespoke line at Samsung with its customizable face panels and LG’s various smart fridges—have massive discounts applied today.  If you’re looking for more square footage to store your food, want some fancy new smart features, or just need to replace an aging machine, there are discounts all across the price spectrum.

Ranges and cooktops

If you’ve had your range for a while, you might not be aware of all the snazzy features they come with these days. In addition to convection, some of them include air frying, built-in microwaves, and various smart technologies. Even if you’re replacing a simple range, the newer ones are much more energy efficient and built to look a lot more luxurious.

Washer and dryer combos

If your washer and dryer have seen better days, Black Friday is the time to grab major savings on a new washer and dryer combo. These high-efficiency models are off 30-40% or more, and most importantly, they’re in stock. (If you’ve tried to buy machines recently and had to wait months for installation, you know the pain.)

Dishwashers

Newer dishwashers are pretty energy efficient, allowing you to get dishes cleaner with less pre-washing. In particular, I recommend the GE model at Home Depot, which I was able to test myself.

The Best Windows Laptops on Sale for Black Friday for Under $300

You can get a laptop from a reputed brand like Dell or Asus on sale during Black Friday for less than $300. Of course, they won’t come with the power of professional-grade models, but even lower-end or ARM processors are enough for most everyday tasks like browsing, using Microsoft 365, and watching videos. These Are the Best Black Friday Deals on Self-Care Tools

On Black Friday, you shop for gifts for everyone else, but don’t forget about yourself. Shopping holidays should always include some splurges—sorry, “self-care”—for the shopper in question. Here are some of the best Black Friday deals that can help you relax, look good, and feel great.

Black Friday deals on hair tools

The wide world of haircare has only gotten wider lately, with fancy doodads and gadgets that our foremothers could only dream of when they were using literal irons to straighten their tresses. These things are pricey, though, so Black Friday is a great time to stock up.

  • The Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler is on sale at Nordstrom for $499.99, down from $599.99. This is the latest version, which includes longer curling barrels and a smoothing dryer attachment. If you’ve been on the fence about an Airwrap, today could be the day to just go for it. Trust me, it works.

  • The L’Ange Hair 2-in-1 titanium blow dryer brush is on sale on Amazon for $53.40, down from $119. These things effortlessly dry hair while volumizing and smoothing, giving you a fresh, blown-out look after a wash.

  • A Chi titanium flat iron is $65.99 at Ulta (down from $109.99), so Black Friday is a fabulous day to pick up a classic tool that has withstood the test of time. If your mom never let you get the Chi in middle school and made you make do with a less expensive (and less effective) economy brand, this is your big moment.

  • Every Olaplex product is 20% off at Ulta for Black Friday, too, so whether you need to restock or are new to the brand, hurry up to get the No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner for $24.

Black Friday deals on skincare tools

Skincare is another element of self care that you can do on the cheap, but it just feels better when you use the higher-quality products. These tools are on sale for the big day, which is good news, since they usually cost a significant chunk of cash.

  • The Foreo Luna 4 facial cleanser and massager is $64.50 at Kohl’s, down from $129. With eight intensities and two kinds of brush heads, it’s perfect for getting a thorough clean on your most delicate skin.

  • The viral SolaWave 4-in-1 skincare wand is $143.65 at Saks, down from $169. You’ve probably seen it all over your social feeds, but wouldn’t it be nicer to see it in your bathroom? It uses red light therapy, galvanic current, therapeutic warmth, and facial massage to replicate the benefits of an in-spa facial and comes with a travel case, too.

  • The super-popular NuFace MINI+ facial toning microcurrent kit is $175 at Ulta, down from $250. In conjunction with the included gel and cream, the device tightens and firms your facial skin, gradually giving you a more contoured look.

Black Friday deals on relaxation tools

Sometimes, self-care is just about relaxing. Make that a little easier with these deals on gadgets designed to soothe.

  • The Theragun mini massager is $149, down from $199. Plus, you can use your FSA card to buy it, which is even more of a deal. That’s your pre-taxed money, not the money from your checking account, so if you lie to yourself a little, it’s like you’re not spending anything at all. Delusion is the root of true relaxation, but a massage gun helps, too.

  • Amazon is selling Byriver foot reflexology slippers for $22.39, down from $34.99, to help you relax and do some self-care even if you’re just wandering around the house. Slip these on before cooking for the holidays or wrapping gifts and you’ll be doing yourself a favor while you help others.

  • Finally, grab a cordless, heated neck massager from KNQZE on Amazon to complete your at-home spa experience. This wearable is $47.98, down from $79.99.

These Are the Best iPhone Apps on Sale for Black Friday

Black Friday comes with sales on Apple products, including Apple Watches, AirTags, MacBooks. But it’s also a good time to move beyond free apps and consider paid ones—those you may have had your eye on or can improve your life in small ways. There are more apps on sale than can be reasonably covered here, but here are some of my favorite ones, along with resources to check out even more app deals.

‘Bound’ is a great audiobook player

If you have DRM-free audiobooks in your collection, you need a great player to play them all, and Bound is down to $2 for Black Friday (50% off). It’s a steal at that price: You can easily import audiobooks into Bound and the app does a great job at sorting and playing them.

‘1Blocker’ is a great adblocker for Safari

If ads are bothering you on Safari, 1Blocker does a good job at hiding them. It has a Safari extension and built-in firewall to block trackers in other apps too, and for Black Friday, 1Blocker is offering a free two-week trial along with a 30% discount on its annual subscription. You can use it for a year for $9.99 if you use this link to redeem the offer.

‘Crouton’ is a great recipe app

Crouton is an excellent app to log all of your recipes. Its basic features are good enough for most people, but if you want to access the premium subscription at a discounted rate, you can get the annual subscription for 50% off (list price $12.99 per year).

‘Classifier’ is gold mine for collectors

For those who love collecting things like stamps, Pokémon cards, board games, or sneakers, Classifier is a great app. It allows people to organize their collections and keep track of the items they want to buy. If you want its premium features, the app has discounted its lifetime subscription to $14.99, which is 25% off.

‘Drafts’ is a great note-taking app

Drafts is a unique notes app that puts the focus on capturing your ideas quickly. It has great text editing tools and supports automations that’ll help you speed up sharing, and if you want to try it to see if the app works for you, use this link to get a three-month free trial.

‘Infuse’ is a great app to rganize and play your movie collection

Some of us have a personal collection of DRM-free movies and TV shows that we’ve painstakingly ripped from Blu-Ray, DVDs, and CDs, or acquired from…elsewhere on the internet. If that sounds like you, Infuse is an excellent app to manage and play all these videos. It has a nice UI, great search filters, and works well across Apple devices. For Black Friday, if you buy an annual subscription, you can get 15 months in your subscription. That’s three months free.

‘Things 3’ is my favorite app to get things done

Things 3 is the best GTD (get things done) app for iPhones. It has an excellent task management system, a neat UI, and the developers have been adding great features to it for over five years now. This is one of those apps that you pay for once and enjoy forever, and. you can get it for $6.99 on Black Friday, down from its usual price of $9.99. The app is sold separately for iPad and Mac, and discounted on those platforms too.

‘PCalc’ is a great scientific calculator

PCalc is one of the best-known calculator apps for Apple platforms. The app has been in development for over 25 years now, and it’s great even on your iPhone. You can get it for $4.99 during Black Friday, which is 50% off its list price.

Some bonus app sales for iPhone users

There are many, many more Black Friday app deals, and you can go track them all at various sources to see if your favorite ones are on sale. Here’s a list to help you get started:

The Best Apple Watch Sales on Black Friday

For iPhone users, there’s no better smartwatch than the Apple Watch. It has the tightest integration with the Apple ecosystem, is a great fitness tracker, and strikes a great balance between features and battery life. As with all Apple devices, though, the nicer models are pricey, but you can get one for less than its list price for Black Friday.

The best Black Friday sales on Apple Watches directly from Apple.com

Many people prefer buying Apple products directly from the company’s online store to guarantee a genuine product and so they don’t have to worry about dealing with third-party sellers. Apple’s online store can also offer a wider variety of color options that may be missing from third-party sites. So if you prefer not to buy from a third party, you can still get a good Black Friday deal on your new Apple Watch.

These Are the Best Black Friday Deals on Sex Toys

Sex toys bring so much joy and innovation to our private lives, but the ones worth buying are rarely cheap. On Black Friday, you can get great deals on gifts for yourself that double as gifts for your partner (unless you don’t want to share, which is also perfectly fine). Here are some of the best deals out there right now.

Adam and Eve

When you head to Adam and Eve’s website right now, you’ll be greeted with a wheel you can spin for Black Friday deals ranging from 50% off two items to a free gift to “GET IT ALL,” which combines the 50% off two items deal with a free gift. To redeem, you’ll need to enter your birthday, email address, and phone number, plus spend over $17.

That should be easy, since you’ll want to buy so much. The brand’s rechargeable thrusting rabbit is $78.74 with coupon for Black Friday while the ever-popular Ravishing Rose Pleaser is $35.

Lovers

Lovers is offering 20% off everything for Black Friday, meaning you’ll get the dual-ended Juicy G Dual Vibrator for $55.20 and the Lovers Anal Plug Training Set for $33.60. There are even more deals around the site, like 30% off some items like the Playboy Pleasure Gusto Stroker, which is now $91.

These Are the Best Apple AirTag Sales for Black Friday

Apple’s AirTags—the best Bluetooth tracker on the market—are going at a 20% discount for Black Friday at multiple online retailers, meaning you can get an AirTag for $23.99 instead of the usual $29.99 at Target or Walmart. You can also get a four-pack for $80 from Target (also available at Walmart) from the usual price of $100.

Apple’s AirTags don’t go on sale very often, so if you’ve been eyeing one for a while, this is a great time to get it. The four-pack brings the cost of AirTags down to $20 a pop; and if you only need one or two, you could always ask friends if anyone wants to do a group buy and split the lower cost.

AirTags are incredibly useful: People use them to keep track of everything from their luggage to pets to bikes to cars. There are plenty of creative ways to use a Bluetooth tracker, and I’m sure you’ll find great uses for one. With iOS 17, you can even share an AirTag with other members of your family, allowing multiple people to track a pet, remotes, or other items that you keep losing track of.

Also, if you’re an AirTag user concerned about your privacy, you should check out how to tell if you’re being tracked by Apple’s AirTags. This feature also works if you have an Android device.

How to Contact Amazon Customer Service on Black Friday

Black Friday has always been chaotic and its migration from an in-store stampede to online event hasn’t done much to change that. You’re in a rush to snap up good deals and can easily make mistakes along the way, especially when Amazon makes it so easy to buy items with a single click of a button. If you need to contact Amazon customer service or a seller on Black Friday, here’s what you do.

Contacting Amazon customer service chat on Black Friday

The first thing you should do when trying to get Amazon assistance on Black Friday is check the Customer Service Help Page, which can be found in the menu on the top right of your computer screen or by clicking the link here. There, you’ll find answers to common questions about how to fix or do a number of things, from altering details on an order to reporting something suspicious.

The fastest way to get real-time help is through Amazon’s live customer service chat. From that Customer Service Help Page, select the option for “Something else,” which will open a page showing even more options. Click the last one, “I need more help.” When the chat box opens, type “Talk to associate” into the text entry box and it will prompt you to choose help by chat or by call.

Contacting Amazon customer service by email or phone

You can also try sending an email to the customer service center at cs-reply@amazon.com, though this may not be your best bet if you’re in a rush, as it can take a while to get a response. For the best service, make sure to include every relevant detail you can think of, like your order number and delivery address.

For faster service, call 1-888-280-43331. You’ll first deal with a bot, but eventually get transferred to a real person. Try to use the phone number linked to your Amazon account, as verification codes related to the call will be sent to that device.

Does today’s Connections game require any special knowledge?

There are brand names and TV show titles on the board today. Use them wisely.

Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today’s Connections:

  • Green category – Trash TV.

Does today’s Connections game involve any wordplay?

BEWARE: Spoilers follow for today’s Connections puzzle!

We’re about to give away some of the answers. Scroll slowly if you don’t want the whole thing spoiled. (The full solution is a bit further down.)

What are the ambiguous words in today’s Connections?

  • A KNOCK and a SLAM can both be loud noises, but they are also both words describing what a reviewer does when they say they don’t like something.

  • CATFISH are freshwater, bottom-feeding, aquatic wildlife. The word can also describe a deceptive dating technique, or a reality TV show based on it.

  • A FIAT is a decree (as in “rule by FIAT”) but it’s also an Italian car company.

  • MAXI is the opposite of MINI; both can describe lengths of skirt. But probably half of you instantly thought of MAXI pads when you saw the word; that’s the direction to go today.

What are the categories in today’s Connections?

  • Yellow: CRITICIZE

  • Green: REALITY SHOWS

  • Blue: CAR BRANDS

  • Purple: ____ PAD

DOUBLE BEWARE: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW

Ready to learn the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? I give them all away below.

What are the yellow words in today’s Connections?

The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today’s yellow group is CRITICIZE and the words are: KNOCK, PAN, ROAST, SLAM.

What are the green words in today’s Connections?

The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today’s green category is REALITY SHOWS and the words are: ALONE, CATFISH, CHOPPED, SURVIVOR.

What are the blue words in today’s Connections?

The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today’s blue category is CAR BRANDS and the words are: FIAT, JAGUAR, MINI, RAM.

What are the purple words in today’s Connections?

The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today’s purple category is ____ PAD and the words are: BACHELOR, LILY, MAXI, MOUSE.

How I solved today’s Connections

I see the reality shows first: CHOPPED, SURVIVOR, BACHELOR, CATFISH. But I’m one away! So let’s try cars. RAM is a truck brand (formerly the Dodge RAM) and it can go with JAGUAR, FIAT, and MINI. 🟦

KNOCK and SLAM go together as forceful noises, but then I realize they can also be insults or critiques. You can PAN something when you review it, or you can ROAST a person. 🟨

Finally I see what I’m missing: we’re not looking at a MAXI skirt, but a MAXI pad. And we can also have a LILY pad, a BACHELOR pad, and a MOUSE pad. 🟪 Then we’re left with ALONE as a reality show, alongside CHOPPED, SURVIVOR, and CATFISH. 🟩

How to play Connections

I have a full guide to playing Connections, but here’s a refresher on the rules:

First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Crossword app. You’ll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on).

Select four items and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you’ll get a chance to try again.

You win when you’ve correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed.

How to win Connections

The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be tricky. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don’t hit “submit” until you’ve confirmed that your group of four contains only those four things.

If you’re stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that seem to have no connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting nicknamed “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be on to something. When I solved that one, I ended up googling whether there was a painter named Close, because Close didn’t fit any of the obvious themes, either.

Another way to win when you’re stuck is, obviously, to read a few helpful hints–which is why we share these pointers every day. Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!

Today's NYT Connections Hints (and Answer) for Thursday, November 23, 2023

It’s time to talk TURKEY about this food-themed puzzle: it’s not as food-themed as it looks at first glance. If you’re looking for the Connections answer for Thanksgiving day (Thursday, November 23, 2023), read on—I’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solutions to all four categories. Along the way, I’ll explain the meanings of the trickier words and we’ll learn how everything fits together. Beware, there are spoilers below for November 23, NYT Connections #165! Read on if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Connections game.

If you want an easy way to come back to our Connections hints every day, bookmark this page. You can also find our past hints there as well, in case you want to know what you missed in a previous puzzle.

Connections board for November 23, 2023: CURRY, BOUQUET, TURKEY, TURNOVER, PIE, BIRD, POLAND, PARFAIT, RAPPORT, JORDAN, TART, TUNISIA, JAMES, JAPAN, RAGOUT, PASTY.

Does today’s Connections game require any special knowledge?

If you know the flags of countries around the world and the names of certain sports icons…well, good luck anyway, this is a toughie. RAGOUT, by the way, is a French word meaning a simmered stew. It’s a relative of ragù, an Italian word often applied to meat sauce served on pasta.

Hints for the themes in today’s Connections puzzle

Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today’s Connections:

  • Yellow category – This category is more than half baked!

  • Green category – Think French.

  • Blue category – World travelers will have an advantage here.

  • Purple category – These guys are shooting hoops.

Does today’s Connections game involve any wordplay?

There’s one category based on the spelling/pronunciation of the words. Another relates to names.

BEWARE: Spoilers follow for today’s Connections puzzle!

We’re about to give away some of the answers. Scroll slowly if you don’t want the whole thing spoiled. (The full solution is a bit further down.)

What are the ambiguous words in today’s Connections?

  • PASTY can be an adjective meaning that somebody looks pale; it’s also a hand pie traditionally made for miners in England, constructed so you can hold the crust with your filthy, arsenic-tainted hands. (Today I learned that they are traditionally made with sweet filling at one end; you eat that side last, as dessert.)

  • A PARFAIT is a dish made by layering something creamy with fruit or other fillings. A PARFAIT made with yogurt and granola can let you believe you are eating a healthy breakfast; a Peanut Buster PARFAIT made with ice cream, peanuts, and fudge was my favorite Dairy Queen order as a kid. The word comes from French and means “perfect.” The T is silent, just like in BOUQUET.

  • TURKEY is only a BIRD today on your Thanksgiving table. In this puzzle, it refers to the country (properly spelled Türkiye, but close enough).

  • CURRY is another simmered dish, and you can also CURRY favor or use a CURRY comb to groom a horse. Forget all of that today, though, and think of basketball player Steph CURRY.

What are the categories in today’s Connections?

  • Yellow: FOODS WITH CRUSTS

  • Green: ENDING IN A SILENT “T”

  • Blue: COUNTRIES WITH RED AND WHITE FLAGS

  • Purple: N.B.A. GREATS

DOUBLE BEWARE: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW

Ready to learn the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? I give them all away below.

What are the yellow words in today’s Connections?

The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today’s yellow group is FOODS WITH CRUSTS and the words are: PASTY, PIE, TART, TURNOVER.

What are the green words in today’s Connections?

The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today’s green category is ENDING IN A SILENT “T” and the words are: BOUQUET, PARFAIT, RAGOUT, RAPPORT.

What are the blue words in today’s Connections?

The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today’s blue category is COUNTRIES WITH RED AND WHITE FLAGS and the words are: JAPAN, POLAND, TUNISIA, TURKEY.

What are the purple words in today’s Connections?

The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today’s purple category is N.B.A. GREATS and the words are: BIRD, CURRY, JAMES, JORDAN.

How I solved today’s Connections

I love all the food words for a food themed holiday! My eye went straight to PIE, TART, and TURNOVER, and it only took a second to realize the last one was PASTY (not pastry), a British hand pie. 🟨

I puzzled over the rest for a long time. RAGOUT and CURRY are both foods made of a simmered mixture of ingredients. JAMES and JORDAN could both be names. TURKEY was one of five countries I saw on the board. Finally, I asked myself “what does RAPPORT have to do with anything?” and saw that it shared a silent T with BOUQUET, RAGOUT, and PARFAIT. 🟩

Still, I was stuck. I still had my five countries, and couldn’t make sense of the other three words. Aha! Larry BIRD and Michael JORDAN are both legendary basketball players; they go with Steph CURRY and LeBron JAMES. 🟪 Finally, I had four countries: TURKEY, POLAND, TUNISIA, and JAPAN. 🟦

This Inflatable Kayak Is Only $85 for Black Friday

You guys know I like to take a simple boat out on the lake; I’ve written about recreational kayaks, inflatable paddleboards, and even–yes–inflatable kayaks. Well, if you’d like to join me out in paddle-land, today is the perfect day to pick up a budget boat. Walmart has the Sevylor K5 inflatable kayak on sale for just $85.

How well does an inflatable kayak work? You can read my review of a similar model (the Intex K1 Challenger) here. An inflatable boat isn’t going to be quite as sturdy or steer quite as straight as a more traditional construction, but I was shocked at how well it performed. And the Sevylor K5 looks to be even better: it’s 10 feet long rather than nine, and has a maximum weight of 250 pounds.

I consider myself something of a cheap boat connoisseur, and those stats aren’t bad at all. I like that this boat comes with a thicker material on the bottom to resist punctures, and spray covers to keep splashes and paddle drips from soaking your lap. The $85 package comes with a paddle and a backpack so you can carry it to your favorite lake, even if the lake is a bit of a hike from the nearest parking lot or from your campsite. It also includes a hand pump. Unlike paddleboards, which require a high-pressure pump to properly inflate, inflatable kayaks are easy to blow up with a simple hand pump like the one that comes in this package.

As for the downsides of an inflatable kayak, we’ve already mentioned that it’s more for tootling around than for speeding toward a destination. (If you want a touring or racing kayak, go buy a touring or racing kayak.) Another important drawback is that the boat is easy enough to unfold before you get in the water, but once you’re headed home that thing is going to be wet. And maybe muddy. If you can give it some time to dry in the sun, that would be ideal; otherwise, make sure to spread it out to dry once you get home.

The Key to Better Studying Is Self-Explanation

If you think about studying conceptually, it’s sort of like teaching yourself the material. That’s the whole point, right? But simply memorizing flashcards probably isn’t the best approach for long-term retention. It turns out there’s another important step: self-explanation, the part of learning that comes after you go over your notes, texts, and other materials. This concept of self-explanation may help students retain knowledge more effectively, rather than just regurgitating facts and figures. Let’s go over how to put it into practice.

What is self-explanation?

Self-explanation occurs when you take the new information you’ve learned and relate it to information you already know. This means that instead of just reading and taking in the material, you’re setting aside part of your study session to think deeply about what it actually means and how it applies to real life. The explanation comes in when you explain to yourself how the new ideas relate to ideas you already understand well, whether in other academic areas or in the real world.

Ideally, you should do this after you complete a chapter or segment of your reading and reviewing. Set aside five to 10 minutes after each chapter to engage in self-explanation, using one of the methods below.

How to use self-explanation when studying

It may feel abstract and a little silly to schedule time to sit and think quietly about how what you’re learning relates to other ideas, so here are some concrete ways you can actually engage in self-explanation.

Retrieval practice

First, any kind of retrieval practice, wherein you actively work to pull information from your memory, will help you get started. The methods you usually employ for retrieval practice—using flashcards, summarizing chapters, or taking a practice quiz, for instance—will be useful for starting to thin more deeply about the material and make sure it springs to mind easily. The self-explanation comes into play while you’re doing those. For instance, you can try a think-pair-share activity to talk over the new material with a classmate or group, focusing not only on what you learned, but on its practical application and associations with other materials or real-world events.

Blurting

If you’re on your own, try adapting the blurting method to meet the needs of self-explanation. In blurting, you write down everything you can remember about what you just studied, then use your notes and text to identify gaps in your memory. Here, you can instead try to blurt or write a “minute paper” about what the material actually means. For instance, if you’re studying bonds in accounting class, you don’t just want to be able to state whether a bond is being sold at a discount or premium; you want to understand the implications that has for the person or entity holding the bond. In your blurt or minute paper, describe what the reason for trading a bond at a discount might be and what the result would be for the entity doing it. Don’t just review how you would journalize that if you were an accountant, but consider why the journal entry would look how it does and what such an entry would be used for in real life. Understanding why something is done the way it is—not just that it’s done a certain way—will help you grasp and remember the material better, even if you just need to pass a test and don’t plan on making your living as an accountant.

Keep asking “why?”

If you come across anything you can’t easily apply to other concepts you already understand, go back to your text and notes for additional information. Seek more info from outside sources, like other publications or even ChatGPT, and keep asking “why?” until it starts to make sense. At the end of self-explanation, you should be able to explain why the facts you studied are true and what makes them important. Even if that won’t be on the test, it will help you remember the facts better when you need them—and give you even more of a foundation for self-explanation in your other classes.

Walmart’s Black Friday Deals on Fitness Equipment Are Really Strong

If you’re looking for deeply discounted weights, machines, benches, and more, these 2023 Black Friday deals from Walmart are worth checking out.

Quick-select adjustable dumbbells for $150 each

The ultimate home gym buy is a set of quick-adjustable dumbbells, but they’re pricey. Even on sale for Black Friday, a pair of Bowflex SelectTech 1090s will run you $299 each. (That’s 25% off the regular price, though, so definitely snap those up if you want the name brand.) This FitRX Smartbell is a similar design, adjusting from 10 to 90 pounds with the turn of a dial.

This XTERRA rower is 80% off

Is this a Concept2? No. But can you get a new Concept2 for 300 smackers? You cannot. This XTERRA rower looks like a pretty solid alternative, and it’s a whopping 80% off.

Get a barbell set with bumpers for just $250

A barbell is a fundamental component of a “real” home gym in my opinion, but it can be hard to find a good set on the cheap. Bumper plates, especially, are great for home gyms (less noise and floor damage) but they tend to be expensive.

Good thing, then, that this weight set is affordable to start and dirt cheap now that it’s on sale. For the price, you get a full-size barbell with one pair each of 45-pound, 25-pound, and 10-pound bumper plates. That will let you build a barbell that weighs up to 205 pounds–yes, you count the weight of the bar. To round out the set, I’d recommend getting one pair each of 2.5-pound and 5-pound plates, and another pair of 10-pounders, and this way you’ll be able to make every 5-pound increment from 45 up to 205.

205 pounds is plenty for most beginner lifters to get started (especially kids and lightweight women), but eventually you’ll outgrow the set. If you’d rather buy a bigger set to start with, there’s also a 370-pound set that works out to 415 pounds including the barbell.

A squat rack for just $170

Now that you have your barbell, how are you going to squat it? Consider this budget power cage your entry-level option. (Don’t forget the spotter arms, which have a 400-pound capacity and are sold separately for $34.99)

$300 off a two-cable functional trainer

If you’re interested in a cable machine, the style sometimes known as a “functional trainer” makes a ton of sense for a small space. These have two vertical cable stacks, which you can use together or separately, and they’ll come with a variety of attachments that you can use for tons of different exercises. These types of machines are a staple of hotel gyms because they really do let you do a lot of different exercises, especially for the upper body, in a small footprint.

This machine from Centr (Centr by Chris Hemsworth, I’m told) comes with a 165-pound weight stack on each cable, and includes a tablet holder if you’d like to follow along with Centr’s digital workouts. (The machine comes with a 3-month free trial.) That said, we have plenty of ideas for how to use a cable machine to build your own workouts.

A trap bar for under $100

The trap bar, or hex bar, is an excellent tool for deadlifting. If you need to compete in a sport that requires straight-bar deadlifts, fine; but if you just want to pick something up off the ground without thinking about it too much, a trap bar is the perfect piece of equipment to do that with. This trap bar is only $75 for the traditional kind, and $70 for the “open” type that not only allows you to carry it while you walk, but also lets you prop it up to change the plates. This would be a great addition to the bumper plate set above.

A folding bench for just $100

Whether your home gym uses dumbbells, barbells, or both, you’ll want a bench to sit on for bench presses and seated exercises. This bench has six incline settings and can even be folded for storage. It’s got a padded top and a 600-pound capacity, counting both you and the weight you’re lifting.

Getting a 4K, 55″ Roku TV for $188 is a ridiculously good deal, especially when it comes with 250+ free live TV channels right out of the box. Of course you could add subscription services like Netflix or Max, but even without them, you’ll have millions of hours of TV to enjoy on a big screen for less than 200 bucks. The picture quality isn’t bad either—it won’t stand up next to high-end sets, but it also costs hundreds less.
