The Differences Between a Drill, Impact Driver, and Hammer Drill (and When to Use Each)

If you’re considering a new tool purchase, or just trying to choose the right tool for your project, all the different options can seem confusing. Drills, impact drivers, and hammer drills have a lot in common, and they even have some overlapping features, but there are some key differences. Here’s a guide to these tools and their features to help you tackle your DIY venture with confidence.

Why are these tools similar?

These tools will all drive a screw with the right bit in them. They’re all designed to hold a bit and rotate for drilling into material like lumber and they will all drive hardware (e.g., a screw). Because of this, you might think of them as being interchangeable, but the amount of power they can exert is quite different.

Drills

A cordless drill is intended to primarily be used to drill holes into materials such as lumber or similar materials. What makes a drill different from an impact driver and a hammer drill is that it doesn’t include an impact as a part of its mechanical function. This reduces the amount of power that the drill exerts and makes it a gentler option. A traditional drill can be used for driving screws and sometimes even nuts, although it won’t provide as much assistance to the user when it comes to additional torque. A drill is best suited for drilling into more delicate materials and driving screws with a controlled amount of torque to prevent splitting. The other benefit of a regular cordless drill as opposed to an impact driver or a hammer drill: It’s much quieter.

Impact drivers

An impact driver is designed to assist the user with driving longer or wider hardware using extra torque. This is caused by the striking force of an internal hammer and anvil controlled by a spring that adds extra force at regular intervals to drive the rotating shaft faster, thus giving the driver more force. Impact drivers will also turn a drill bit, although they require an adapter or a quarter-inch hex shank attachment for a bit to be compatible with them. If you’re working with longer or wider hardware, or working with tougher material that you’re trying to drill through, an impact driver will work well.

Hammer drills

A hammer drill is like a traditional drill crossed with an impact driver and it’s larger and more powerful than a regular driver. A hammer drill has a larger, half-inch chuck, and looks and functions similarly to a regular drill except that it has spring-driven hammer and anvil component, much like an impact driver. These drills are generally used for drilling through more challenging materials like concrete or stone. It’s usually a good idea for safety’s sake to use the extra control handle that often comes with this type of drill, as the amount of force it can exert can be stronger than your bare hands.

Choosing the right tool for the job

The more force a drill can exert, the higher the risk of causing splitting or snapping of hardware, so it’s a good idea to use proportional force to the project you’re working on. Driving hardware or a drill bit too fast can cause it to snap. Excessive force can also cause heat to damage the bit or the hardware. For more delicate, wood projects, a regular drill works well. For slightly larger projects, or for driving larger hardware, an impact driver is a good fit. For masonry or extra large bolts, using a hammer drill will do the job.

Here Are the Differences Between QLED and OLED (and Why They Matter)

As we head into the peak of 2023’s shopping season, many of you will probably be looking to buy a new TV, especially as sales and deals become available throughout the remainder of the year. If you’ve paid any attention to the TV market as of late, you’ve probably noticed two main types of TVs being offered: QLED and OLED. You wouldn’t be alone in feeling confused at exactly what these terms mean and which is the best choice for your living room. Here’s everything you need to know.

What does QLED stand for, and how does it work?

To start, let’s take a look at QLED. This is the biggest mystery of the two, as OLED displays have also appeared on tons of other devices and tech hardware—like smartphones—over the past few years. If you’ve looked at any of the high-end Samsung TVs marketed in the past several years, you’ve probably noticed that QLED label on the end of the TV.

According to Samsung, QLED stands for “quantum dot LED TV.” The best way to look at QLED is to consider it an evolution of the LED LCD TV. It isn’t wholly the same, but it also isn’t wholly different. Instead, it’s essentially an LED LCD TV that adds in a quantum dot film, which is meant to increase the quality of the image while still relying on an LED backlight.

Essentially, quantum dots are microscopic molecules that emit their own differently colored light when another light hits them. The dots are contained within a film in QLED displays, and when light from the LED backlight hits them, it transmits the light through the dots, giving them all their own distinct colors and brightness. Still, it builds off the same technology that powers a standard LED LCD TV.

It is worth noting that Samsung is one of the only brands that uses quantum dots in its TVs and brands them as QLED. Other brands like Vizio also use quantum dots in their LED LCD TVs. However, they do not brand them QLED. As such, the QLED term is more of a buzzword meant to make you feel like you’re getting something higher quality when you’re ultimately just getting a standard modern TV display.

What does OLED stand for, and how does it work?

OLED, or “organic light-emitting diode” fundamentally differs from LED LCD TVs. Instead of building off the LED backlight system that QLED displays us, OLED displays work off emissive technology.

Being emissive means that the pixels in the OLED display each emit their own light. This allows them to have individual brightness and contrast, as well as the ability to turn off completely in dark scenes. This is what gives OLED TVs their distinct look: Their infinite contrast ratio, where dark scenes are totally black, is something no LED backlight can reproduce, even when using the quantum dot film that QLED offers.

In fact, an OLED TV is not an LCD TV in any way. LCD TVs are much cheaper to manufacture, especially in larger sizes. While they can still provide great color and visuals, they lack the individual pixel lighting that makes an OLED look so good.

OLED pros and cons

If you’re planning to choose between QLED and OLED, then it’s going to be helpful to know exactly where each option succeeds and where it falls short. For starters, OLED displays offer better contrast and black levels, thanks to the individual lighting that comes from every pixel. This results in an ultimately higher quality image that makes each scene in a movie or television show shine through at its best. It also means you can expect fantastic quality HDR when using an OLED TV.

While that is certainly worth praising, OLED TVs are not without their weaknesses. Because they rely on individual lighting, they’re dimmer than your top-of-the-line QLED displays, which often have a higher overall brightness. Currently, OLED TVs max out at around 1,500 nits on the high-end models from companies like LG. (The LG G2 offers a peak brightness of 1,100 nits, and the LG G3 tops out at 1,500 nits.) The reason that OLED TVs are much dimmer is due to their individual lighting. It’s much harder to make them all brighter effectively than on a TV with a single backlight, like a QLED TV.

This means you’ll probably want to mostly use OLED TVs inside of darker rooms—like home cinemas, or just rooms with blackout curtains over the windows. If you have brighter rooms where you need TVs, then OLED displays might not look as good, as the image will be harder to see overall.

There’s also the possibility of burn-in. If you had a plasma TV back when they were considered the top-of-the-line, then you’re probably already aware of what burn-in is. Essentially, burn-in happens when an image is shown on a display for too long, and the effects of that image become engrained or burned into the display. This can ruin a display by making it impossible to enjoy content without seeing the burned-in image. While OLEDs are susceptible to burn-in, most users aren’t going to have a single image on their display long enough to cause any kind of burn-in. As such, I’d recommend avoiding running any kind of 24/7 newscasts for long periods at a time, as the banners that stay in one place along the bottom of the screen (as well as networks logos) can result in burn-in on the display.

QLED pros and cons

As I noted above, most companies use QLED displays in their LCD televisions. However, they just don’t brand them as QLED. Samsung, on the other hand, has used QLED as a bit of a marketing term to try to make its TVs stand out from the competition, and it has worked in some regard.

QLED displays might not be as contrasting and might not offer the deeper black levels of OLED, but they don’t look bad by any means. Most of your standard QLED displays are more than powerful enough to do what you want them to do. In fact, QLED TVs are exceptionally great for really bright rooms, as some models, like the 65-inch Hisense Class U8 can reach peak brightness levels of 2,000 nits. That isn’t a brightness that you’ll be running the entire time, but it’s something you’re going to be able to take advantage of in really bright situations.

The downside of this extra brightness if that you lose some of the contrast and black levels that OLED TVs offer. For most people that probably isn’t going to be a huge deal breaker, but if you want the highest quality image on your TV, an OLED is going to fit the bill here.

So which is better?

Ultimately, this will come down to what type of quality you’re looking for in your television. Right now, OLED displays offer a better contrast and black level, thanks to the individual lighting that comes from every pixel. QLED displays are often brighter and can get brighter than any of the current OLED models. That said, OLED displays are still more than bright enough to tackle the lighting conditions of most rooms, though they might not have the same high brightness as the QLED.

If you want to pick a new TV for the best overall display quality—counting superior contrast, better blacks, and even better overall HDR image and color quality—then OLED TVs have far more to offer. They also offer better viewing angles and uniformity, meaning you’ll get close to—if not exactly—the same viewing experience from every angle of your living room.

If you’re looking for a great new television that’s big and cheaper, though, QLED still offers a really solid viewing experience that will deliver bright colors and solid contrast, though not nearly at the same level of quality as an OLED display.

Future variations of QLED TVs may offer the same level of contrast and black levels that OLED can hit, but that tech is likely still a good few years off. For now, OLED is the best option for superior image quality, as long as you don’t mind the extra cost.

Make Sure Your Rent Payments Are Being Reported to the Credit Bureaus

Many people don’t realize that consistently paying rent on time can positively impact your credit score. Reporting your on-time rent payments to credit bureaus demonstrates responsible financial behavior and allows you to build your credit history. If you’re looking to give your credit score a boost, here’s what to know about reporting your rent to the credit bureaus.

Why you should report your rent

When your rental payment history is included in your credit file, it can do the same helpful things that mortgage or loan payments do. First, it establishes length of credit history, which accounts for 15% of your FICO credit score’s calculation.

But to be clear, simply paying your rent will not help you build credit. You need to actually report your rent using the methods below.

Who should report their rent

Any renter who pays on time each month should consider reporting payments. Whether you rent an apartment or house, you deserve recognition for this responsibility; even if you don’t have a solid credit history, you probably have a history of paying your rent on time. This is why rent-reporting is valuable for anyone with thinner credit files, as well as those who may need to rebuild credit after issues like bankruptcy.

How to report your rent

Many property management companies and private landlords now facilitate rent reporting. Ask your landlord first if they submit payments to credit bureaus on the renter’s behalf. There’s a good chance you were automatically enrolled when you signed your lease, at no additional cost.

Otherwise, look into getting your landlord to enroll in a rent-reporting service like Piñata (which is free to use). This way your rent payments will be reported to all three of the credit reporting bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. All three bureaus will take those payments into consideration, as paying your rent on-time and in full speaks positively towards your financial management skills.

There are rent-reporting services that cost money, but I don’t recommend those. Whatever boost you get to your credit history likely won’t be worth the annual fees from these services, especially when free ones are on the table.

Additional tips to boost your credit score

Reporting your proper rent payment history is an easy, no-cost way to get credit for demonstrating financial responsibility month after month. Along with rent reporting, make sure to avoid late payments, maintain low balances on credit cards, and fix any errors on your credit report to raise your scores higher.

After a certain point, having a super high credit score doesn’t actually matter. What matters is that with a little diligence, you can build strong credit to keep your financial options open, even when times get tough. Read on if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Connections game.

If you want an easy way to come back to our Connections hints every day, bookmark this page. You can also find our past hints there as well, in case you want to know what you missed in a previous puzzle.

Below, I’ll give you some oblique hints at today’s Connections answers. And farther down the page, I’ll reveal the themes and the answers. Scroll slowly and take just the hints you need!

NYT Connections board for November 28, 2023: BAG, KEY, STUDY, STUFF, KITCHEN, COUNTER, PACK, ISLAND, DIP, JAM, DEN, SPROUT, BAR, BEDROOM, CRAM, ATOLL.

Credit: Connections/NYT

Does today’s Connections game require any special knowledge?

Some geographical terms might help. An ATOLL is a ring-shaped island formed by volcanic activity and the growth of a coral reef. The U.S. government used Bikini ATOLL as a nuclear testing site from 1946 to 1958, after forcibly displacing the people who lived there. The famous two-piece swimsuit got its name from the island, a big ol’ joke about how it was expected to have an “explosive” reaction.

Hints for the themes in today’s Connections puzzle

Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today’s Connections:

  • Yellow category – Found on a floor plan.

  • Green category – Little bits of land.

  • Blue category – Fill ’er up!

  • Purple category – Other possible entries here: burrito, curd.

Does today’s Connections game involve any wordplay?

There’s a fill-in-the-blank for purple today.

BEWARE: Spoilers follow for today’s Connections puzzle!

We’re about to give away some of the answers. Scroll slowly if you don’t want the whole thing spoiled. (The full solution is a bit further down.)

What are the ambiguous words in today’s Connections?

  • A KEY can be a thing that opens a lock (literally or metaphorically), and a KEY or cay is a sandy island formed by washed-up, microscopic plant and animal skeletons. Think of the Florida Keys, or the Key limes grown there.

  • An ISLAND can be a COUNTER in a KITCHEN, or it can be a small landmass in a body of water.

  • A DEN can be the place where wolves live, or a bonus room in a house often used for reading or TV watching.

  • JAM and DIP might both bring condiments to mind, but these words are in different categories today. (I’ll give you one more hint: JAM is a verb today, DIP is not.)

What are the categories in today’s Connections?

  • Yellow: ROOMS IN A HOUSE

  • Green: LAND SURROUNDED BY WATER

  • Blue: FILL TO EXCESS

  • Purple: BEAN ____

DOUBLE BEWARE: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW

Ready to learn the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? I give them all away below.

What are the yellow words in today’s Connections?

The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today’s yellow group is ROOMS IN A HOUSE and the words are: BEDROOM, DEN, KITCHEN, STUDY.

What are the green words in today’s Connections?

The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today’s green category is LAND SURROUNDED BY WATER and the words are: ATOLL, BAR, ISLAND, KEY.

What are the blue words in today’s Connections?

The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today’s blue category is FILL TO EXCESS and the words are: CRAM, JAM, PACK, STUFF.

What are the purple words in today’s Connections?

The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today’s purple category is BEAN ____ and the words are: BAG, COUNTER, DIP, SPROUT.

How I solved today’s Connections

I see the rooms first: STUDY, KITCHEN, BEDROOM, DEN. 🟨

COUNTER, ISLAND, and BAR are all surfaces you might use to serve or prepare food, but I can’t find a fourth. ISLAND, ATOLL, and KEY are all small landmasses in an ocean, but again, what can I do with just three of them?

I go with STUFF, PACK, JAM, and CRAM instead. 🟦

I’m still stumped on the islands, so I look for outliers. I don’t know what to do with DIP, SPROUT, or BAG. I know there’s a good chance we’re looking at a fill-in-the-blank, because (1) most days have one, and (2) words like BAG and DIP are so simple and versatile they just scream out for something to complete them. Finally it hits me: beans. Bean COUNTER rounds out my group. 🟪

That leaves me with ATOLL, ISLAND, KEY, and BAR. Like a sandBAR. 🟩

How to play Connections

I have a full guide to playing Connections, but here’s a refresher on the rules:

First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Crossword app. You’ll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on).

Select four items and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you’ll get a chance to try again.

You win when you’ve correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed.

How to win Connections

The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be tricky. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don’t hit “submit” until you’ve confirmed that your group of four contains only those four things.

If you’re stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that seem to have no connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting nicknamed “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be on to something. When I solved that one, I ended up googling whether there was a painter named Close, because Close didn’t fit any of the obvious themes, either.

Another way to win when you’re stuck is, obviously, to read a few helpful hints–which is why we share these pointers every day. Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!

These Are the Best Cyber Monday Deals on Headphones

When you find the perfect headphones or a set of earbuds that fit your lifestyle, it’s like unlocking a new level of personal audio bliss. Whether you want noise cancellation, a budget pair of earbuds that won’t break the bank, or premium-sounding headphones, your perfect audio match is out there—and we’re here to help you find them. Here are the best Cyber Monday deals on headphones and earbuds that you should be shopping for right now.

Best deals on noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds

Best Cyber Monday deals on noise-canceling headphones and earbuds:

Best deals on headphones and earbuds to hear your surroundings

  • Headphones: The Beats Studio Pro are Beats’ flagship product and their most expensive headphone. They have a powerful sound and are very comfortable. They are on this list because they have spatial audio that uses head tracking so you know which direction the sound around you is coming from. This is a great feature for those who commute on their bikes, run or walk around busy areas. You can also hear the people around you without taking off your headphones. Currently, they have hit their lowest price yet, per Camelcamelcamel’s price history, with a 51% discount currently at $169.99 (originally $349.99). This is one of the best headphone deals I’ve seen so far. You can read the full PCMag review here.

  • Earbuds: For those who want to have secure earbuds for the gym that still let them be aware of their surroundings, the JBL Endurance Peak 3 does the job effectively with its ambient awareness technology and comfortable, secure fit. They are currently $69.95 (originally $99.95), which is the lowest price they’ve been on Amazon, according to Camelcamelcamel’s price history. You can read the full PCMag review here.

Best Cyber Monday deals on standard headphones and earbuds:

Best headphones and earbuds under $100

  • Earbuds: If you’re prone to losing your earbuds all the time and want decent earbuds for a good deal, consider the 2023 Echo Buds currently going for $34.99 (originally $49.99). These sweat-resistant earbuds with Alexa voice control are the lowest price they’ve been over the last three months, according to Honey. You can read the full PCMag review here.

  • Another great option, while they last, is the Skullcandy Indy Evo currently going for $14.99 (originally $69.99). This is one of the best bangs for your buck on this list. The earbuds are water resistant, give you 30 hours of playtime, and come with a charging case. This is by far the cheapest they’ve ever been, according to Camelcamelcamel’s price history.

  • Headphones: If you want some noise-canceling headphones that won’t cost an arm and a leg, consider the Sennheiser HD 458BT Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones from Best Buy, currently going for $69.98 (originally $199.98). These noise-canceling headphones are only in the budget section because they are half off, not because of their quality. This price matches the lowest it’s been over the last three months, according to Honey.

  • Another great alternative are the Beats Solo3, which are 50% off at $99.99 (originally $199.95). These headphones give you up to 40 hours of listening time with fast charging (three hours of playtime with a five-minute charge) and have a microphone so you can take calls with them. This is the cheapest they’ve ever been, according to Camelcamelcamel’s price history.

Best Cyber Monday deals on headphones and earbuds under $100:

Best deals on premium audio headphones and earbuds

  • Headphones: For those looking for the best quality while still considering a deal, the Bose QuietComfort 45 for $199 (originally $329) offers the best noise cancellation of any headphones, according to PCMag’s review. They have a rich sound and stay comfortable no matter how long you wear them. This is the cheapest they’ve ever been, according to Camelcamelcamel’s price history.

  • If you’re not looking to spend that much but still want quality headphones, consider the Sony WH-XB910N for $119.99 (originally $249.99). This matches the lowest price they’ve been over the last four months, according to Honey’s price history. You can read PCMag’s “excellent” review here.

  • Earbuds: If you’re looking for a deal on premium sound on a pair of earbuds, consider the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. They are currently $159.99 (originally $229.99), which is the third lowest price they’ve ever been, according to Camelcamelcamel’s price history. You can read the full PCMag review here.

  • A direct competitor of the Galaxy Buds Pro 2 is the Status Between 3ANC. I’ve been using mine for about two months, and they are my go-to pair for most activities. They have one of the most clear sounds I’ve heard from a pair of earbuds, with the ability to fully customize the EQ. They also have active noise-canceling, ambient sound to hear your surroundings and give you many ear-tip options to find the best fit for you. They are currently $139 (originally $249.99). This is the lowest price they’ve ever been, according to Camelcamelcamel’s price history. You can read the full PCMag review here.

These Are the Best Cyber Monday Deals on Streaming Devices

With major streaming content providers rolling out bargain prices for their movies and TV shows, it’s a good time to pick up a new device to actually do the streaming. There are a ton of devices out there that will hook up to your TV and let you watch Netflix, YouTube, etc., and the shopping holiday deals have made them extremely affordable. I’m talking “less than 20 bucks” affordable.

Here are my picks for the best Cyber Monday streaming device deals.

Amazon Fire devices

Amazon is offering Cyber Monday deals on its Fire line of streaming devices, and there’s something for every budget. Each of these devices comes with six months of MGM+ for free.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite: This cheap-as-chips streaming stick can be yours for the Cyber Monday price of $15.99, marked down from $29.99. It’s compatible with Alexa, lets you stream movies and TV from major streaming services and listen to music from Spotify, Amazon Music, and Pandora too. If you pay for MGM+ already, you should buy this even if you already have a streaming device: MGM+ is $49.99 a year, so you’d be saving money even if you never use the Stick at all.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick: A step up from the “lite” version, this devices streams in full HD. You can watch endless hours of content and stream music too for $19.99, half-off its regular price. It also comes with MGM+ for six months, so the above sneaky savings still apply.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max: Along with the music and movie streaming and support for Wi-Fi 6E, the 4K Max comes with “Ambient Experience” that “lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.” Cool, I guess. The Max costs $39.99, marked down from $59.99,

  • Amazon Fire TV Cube: According to Amazon, the Fire TV Cube contains an octa-core processor that is 2X as powerful as Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Not only can you use it to stream movies and music in high definition, it also lets you manage your smart home on screen. It’s on sale for $109.99, marked down from $139.99.

Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

The 4K version of Google’s streaming device is on sale through Best Buy for $37.99, marked down from $49.99. It features voice control, a recommendation system, kid-friendly profiles, and it comes with six months of Peacock Premium for free.

Chromecast with Google TV (4k)

Roku streaming devices

Like Amazon, Roku is offering Cyber Monday deals on a number of its video streaming devices and has something for everyone, no matter how much or how little they want to spend.

  • Roku Express: For $21.99, you can have fast, seamless streaming with the Roku Express. It comes with 400+ free live TV channels, and the Roku channel too. It’s no frills, but it’s easy and cheap.

  • Roku Express 4K+: Amazon is selling the “better” 4k version of the Roku Express for $24.97, not much extra for a definite step-up in quality.

  • Roku Streaming Stick: This tiny streaming stick hides behind your TV and provides limitless streaming choices for only $29.98.

  • Roku Ultra: Roku’s top-of-the-line streaming device is selling for $69.00, 31% less than its regular $99.99 price. The Ultra supports Cinematic Dolby Vision picture & Dolby Atmos sound. It comes with a chargeable remote control, and a remote-control-finding feature for when you lose the thing.

  • Roku Streambar: If you need a device to stream video and provide premium audio, the Streambar has you covered. For $99.99, you get both a top-of-the-line streaming device and a decent soundbar. If you want to upgrade to full surround in the future, the Streambar is compatible with other Roku speakers.

2021 Apple TV 4K

Apple’s 4K streaming box features 64GB of storage, 4K High Frame Rate HDR with Dolby Vision video, and that special Apple style. It also features Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, and Apple Music—in other words, it’s the perfect addition to your Apple home. In keeping with Apple’s identity, it’s fairly expensive at $179.95, but the Cyber Monday price on Amazon is a little cheaper than the usual price of $199.99.

Tablo 2-Tuner Over-the-Air DVR

This is one of those “you didn’t know you always needed it” products. It’s a DVR for both streaming an over-the-air video. So cord-cutters can record what they like from their smartphones, Amazon Fire devices, Roku, Google TV, and digital antenna, then play it back on any compatible device on the network. The $79.95 price is 20% off the usual $99.95 price.

The Best Tech Deals From Best Buy's Cyber Monday Sale

Best Buy was the retailer with the best tech deals on Black Friday, and they are keeping my vote for my favorite retailer with the best deals for Cyber Monday.

Best Buy’s Cyber Monday deals are underway

The physical Best Buy stores are open on Cyber Monday and will also have in-store deals available. Here is what they’re doing for Cyber Monday:

  • Nov. 26 and 27: On Sunday, Nov. 26, Best Buy will kick off their Cyber Monday savings event. This sale will be in-store and online.

Best Cyber Monday deals at Best Buy right now

Remember that not all deals are as good as they look on paper. I noticed two of their front-page TV deals, the LG 48″ Class A2 Series and Insignia™ – 55″ Class F30 Series, use the hidden price hike ploy to trick shoppers into thinking they’re getting a better deal than they actually are (both TVs have been about the same low price for most of the second half of the year). You can see their price history from Honey here and here, respectively. Remember always to use price-tracking tools to avoid being taken advantage of. The following deals are ones I’ve verified to be, indeed, good deals:

Other Cyber Monday deals by category

Better Cyber Monday deals for loyalty members

Best Buy has exclusive deals for their paid loyalty programs that members of My Best Buy Plus or My Best Buy Total can take advantage of. Keep in mind most of those deals will only show their discounted price once you put them on your cart with the “save $X with Plus or Total” option. For example, you can get an extra $50 off on this Samsung Galaxy Book3 360 to match the lowest price it reached during October Prime Day, according to Honey’s price history.

What you can expect this year

Best Buy says you’ll see deals of “up to 50% on top gifts,” specifically during their Cyber Monday Sale. In past years, they’ve done multiple 24-hour “flash sales” similar to the “deal of the day” they have every day. The best sales always have limited quantities and are not guaranteed to get re-stocked. Remember, you can always return it if you find it cheaper at another retailer or even at Best Buy again at a later date.

The price-matching and return policies are different

Best Buy is known for its price-matching policy, where they’ll match the price of most products you find cheaper from a list of other retailers. But until Nov. 27 (Cyber Monday), you won’t be able to take advantage of their price-matching policy. However, if you do find a specific product to be cheaper somewhere else during those blackout periods, you can always return it. In fact, they’re extending their return and exchange policy through Jan. 13 for most products (including online) bought between Oct. 27 and Dec. 30.

Cyber Monday is the best time of the year to buy a board game or two. Not only are they on sale, they’ll arrive just in time to take advantage of the hours of lazing around the holidays bring. So this year, give the gift of board games and be a hero to your family and friends.

Amazon has a ton of interesting board games on sale for Cyber Monday this year: everything from classics like Catan to future-classics like Mysterium, so no matter what kind of player you are, there’s a board game for you, and it’s probably cheap as hell. Check out the best board games on Amazon for Cyber Monday below.

Ticket to Ride

This game about building railways across America is best-of-all-time tier for family game night. It’s simple enough for little ones to grasp, but interesting enough to engage adults. A game can be finished in about 45 minutes, give or take, so even the short-attention-spanned will dig it. It’s $27.47 too, half off the regular price

One Night Ultimate Werewolf

I’m a huge fan of deduction-based party games, and Werewolf is a classic. It’s a game for people who are good at social skills like deception and deduction instead of strategy. While you could play a basic game of Werewolf with just some paper and a pen, Ultimate Werewolf has added game elements and an app so that no one has to act as referee. It’s on sale for $19.96, a 20% saving.

Mysterium

If you want to make the holidays a little spooky, check out Mysterium. This cooperative ghost-hunting game casts one player as the spirit of a murder victim and the rest as psychics, with everyone working together to solve the mystery of Warwick Manor. If you remember the mystery-solving fun of Clue fondly, Mysterium seriously blows it out of the water.

Herstory: The Board Game of Remarkable Women

If you take a look at Herstory and think “Oh, great, an educational game,” then stop limiting yourself: Herstory is that rare game that will teach you something and is also very fun. It combines strategy, engine-building, and set collection in delightful ways, and you’ll learn something about historically important women, too. It’s $19.18, too, less than half the normal price.

Catan

Catan is one of those “you will always go back to it” board games—it’s among the best resource-gathering strategy games ever made. Catan can be learned in minutes, but it’s deep enough that you could play it for years and still not master it, and It’s half off at $27.47. If you’re already a fan of the base game, check out an expansion or two. They’re on sale too

Pandemic

Is it too soon to play a game about a global pandemic? Whatever; do it anyway. Pandemic is a cooperative game in which players work together to save humanity from a rapidly spreading disease. If you like pitching-in to solve problems, Pandemic is a great game, and a steal at $28.49 (down from 39.99.)

Wavelength

Wavelength bills itself as “The Party Game Show in a Box,” and I don’t disagree. This is an hilarious social game where players try to read each others’ minds and figure out unexpected connections to arrive at the answers to puzzles. It’s hard to explain, but trust me: it’s among the best party games ever.

Avalon Hill Axis & Allies 1942

Some families and friend groups are about socializing and carrying-on, but if your peeps are about quietly thinking through complex strategies, you can’t go wrong with Axis & Allies, the classic war game that re-enacts World War II. It’s complicated—the rule book is like a novel! There are a million pieces! It takes hours to play! (That’s all fun to some people). It’s $56.45, down from $72.99.

Diplomacy

If you’re like, “Axis and Allies is for dirty casuals;” give Diplomacy a try. It’s ridiculously complicated, and it’s interminable—a typical game takes more than four hours to complete. Set in the geopolitical nightmare of pre World War I Europe, Diplomacy’s focus on betrayal and skulduggery ensures that at least one friendship will end each time you play it. All that for only $29.49.

Cat in The Box Deluxe Edition

This card game’s twist is that cards don’t have suits until you play them, so it’s like Schrödinger card game! A cool twist on classic card dynamics with really attractive and cool looking designs, Cat in the Box is only $16.99. That’s 43% off the regular price.

Codenames: Duet

If you’re in a family of two, and you don’t like competition, this clue-giving game is perfect. Codenames Duet takes the four-player co-op fun of Codenames and retools it for a couple. It’s the kind of game that rewards creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

Make This Buffalo Turkey Pizza With Your Thanksgiving Leftovers

Congratulations, we made it to the other side of Thanksgiving. For many people, the whole point of Turkey day is gazing into a fridge full of leftovers, so reward yourself with as many turkey-centric dishes as you possibly can. Soon I’ll be switching over to a diet of cookies and sprinkles, but until then it’s turkey in everything. My favorite way to use up leftover turkey is to make buffalo turkey pizza, and I think you’ll like it, too.

It’s been a few days, but you’ve likely still got leftover turkey in your fridge. If you’ve had your fill of turkey soup, this might be the easiest way to re-excite your tastebuds. It’s the ultimate in low-effort, and you can use any amount of turkey you want. If you just have a few ounces left, that’s perfect. If you have an entire breast and two thighs left, that’s perfect, too. It’s a pizza topping, and it’s impossible to screw up.

How to make a buffalo turkey pizza

You have the turkey, so all you need is a pizza and buffalo sauce. I picked up a DiGiorno cheese pizza—if there’s a better frozen pizza out there, I haven’t found it—and a bottle of Buffalo Wild Wings medium buffalo sauce. Frozen pizzas work well here because they’re already partially cooked, so the crust can support a heap of toppings, like eight ounces of sauce-coated turkey. There are likely a slew of bottled buffalo sauce options in your grocery store next to the hot sauces, but if you’re unsure, try the Buffalo Wild Wings sauce. I appreciate the thick consistency, and along with the manageable heat, they sneak in a hint of celery flavor. It’s a nice touch.

Preheat the oven according to the package’s directions and unbox your pizza. Chop or shred your leftover turkey meat. It doesn’t have to be warm since it’s going in the oven. Add the turkey pieces to a bowl and add enough buffalo sauce to coat the turkey well. I would recommend slightly over-saucing as opposed to leaving unsauced spots on the meat. I had about a cup of chopped turkey and I added about a quarter cup of sauce. This will vary depending on the type of sauce you have and how much turkey you start with.

Spoon the buffalo turkey over the top of the frozen pizza, breaking up clusters, and spreading it out evenly. You can add extra cheese if you’d like, slices of red onion, or drizzle extra sauce across the top, like I did. Bake the pizza according to the package directions, or until you’re happy with it. Drizzle on more sauce, add chopped chives or scallions, and enjoy.

If frozen pizza’s not your thing, you can use this buffalo turkey trick on a delivery pizza, or even make your own pizza. Heck, you might prefer to make buffalo sauce from scratch—I love an ambitious home chef. Whichever choice you make, that leftover turkey will find a good home.

These Are the Best Cyber Monday Deals on Sex Toys

Sex toys bring so much joy and innovation to our private lives, but the ones worth buying are rarely cheap. On Cyber Monday, you can get great deals on gifts for yourself that double as gifts for your partner (unless you don’t want to share, which is also perfectly fine). Here are some of the best deals out there right now.

Adam and Eve

When you head to Adam and Eve’s website right now, you’ll be greeted with a wheel you can spin for Black Friday deals ranging from 50% off two items to a free gift to “GET IT ALL,” which combines the 50% off two items deal with a free gift. You can also just enter the code SUPER50 at checkout, if spinning digital wheels isn’t your thing. Otherwise, to redeem, you’ll need to enter your birthday, email address, and phone number, plus spend over $17.

That should be easy, since you’ll want to buy so much. The brand’s rechargeable thrusting rabbit is $78.74 with coupon for Black Friday while the ever-popular Ravishing Rose Pleaser is $35.

Tracy’s Dog

Tracy’s Dog is running not only a few sales, but some major bundle deals for Cyber Monday, so you can pick up the OG Pro 2 clitoral sucking vibrator plus lube for $50.99 instead of $76.98. For $78.97, you can grab a bottle of lube, Shrooms butt plug sets, and a cock ring.

Lovehoney

The Cyber Monday deals at Lovehoney are wild, going up to 70% off on select items. The Magic Wand is 20% off at $119.99 and the We-Vibe Chorus App and Remote Controlled couple’s toy is $167.20. You can even get your holiday shopping taken care of with a 12-piece advent calendar for $119, down 53% from $254.99.

These Are the Best Streaming Service Deals for Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday has grown beyond discounts on physical items you can wrap up and give away; video streaming services are jumping into the pre-holiday bargain battlefield with promotional price-cuts, “try it for free” offers, and more. It’s an extremely competitive environment for streaming entertainment providers, which makes it the perfect time for consumers to save a few bucks on their monthly entertainment expenses.

Below are the best Cyber Monday deals on streaming services, from standbys like Hulu and Max to up-and-comers like Philo.

Best Cyber Monday 2023 streaming deal: 70% off Max for 6 months

Max (formerly known as HBO Max) is offering an aggressive deal for Cyber Monday: six months of Max for $2.99 a month. That’s a 70% saving over the regular $9.99 price. This deal is only for the ad-supported version of Max, and it’s limited to new or returning customers, but three bucks a month is cheap for a top-tier streaming service. For comparison’s sake, the no-commercials version of Max is $15.99 a month. Act now, though: The last day for signing up is November 27.

Peacock: $1.99 a month for 12 months, or $19.99 for the year

NBC’s streaming provider is offering two impressive discounts for Cyber Monday: either $1.99 a month for 12 months or $19.99 for the year. The regular price is $5.99/mo or $59.99/year. This is for Peacock Premium, Peacocks’s ad-supported tier, only. The offer isn’t open to current subscribers. Use the code YEARLONG for the $19.99 a year offer or BIGDEAL for the $1.99 offer at the below link. The last day for signing up is November 27.

Hulu: $.99 a month for a year

Not to be outdone by Max, Hulu’s ad-supported tier is going on sale for $.99 a month for a year. That’s an 87% saving from the regular price. The “less than a buck” offer is only available to new or returning Hulu subscribers.

Fubo: One-week free trial and $40 savings over two months

For Cyber Monday, Fubo is working hard to court consumers in the market for a cable-TV replacement. The company is offering a $20 discount for the first two months’ subscription to all three of its programming tiers. You can also take advantage of the seven-day free trial to see if you even like Fubo.

Philo: Half-off for the first two months

I don’t know anyone who subscribes to Philo, but that just means the company is hungry. A subscription to this bare-bones live-TV streaming service is already cheaper than its competition at $25 a month, but they’re going even lower by offering a Cyber Monday price of $12.50 a month for the first two months. Philo also offers a free trial week, so you can see if you can live without sports and news.  Enter the code “BFCM23” for the discount. Don’t sleep, though: This deal runs through November 28.

YouTube Premium: Free for three months (with purchase at Best Buy)

If you like YouTube but despise YouTube’s interminable ad-breaks, this might be the Cyber Monday deal for you. If you purchase an eligible item on Best Buy’s website between now and Jan. 2, you can get three months of YouTube Premium for free. It’s only for new or returning customers, though.

Paramount Plus: $1.99 a month for three months

Paramount Plus is usually $5.99 a month, but for Cyber Monday, you’ll be able to sign up for $1.99 for three months. You can also get Paramount and Showtime for $3.99 a month for three months. Do it quick, though: The offer ends on Dec. 3.

Roku: Premium channels for Black Friday prices

If you’re a user of Roku, the company is offering a ton of channels at discounted prices for Black Friday, so whether you like AcornTV or Fox Nation, you’ll be able to lock in a lower price if you visit Roku’s site between now and November 30. (All these are two-month offers unless otherwise noted.)

Roku channels for $.99 per month

  • A&E Crime Central

  • Fox Nation

  • The Great Courses

  • HISTORY Vault

  • Lifetime Movie Club

  • MGM+

  • Noggin

  • STARZ

  • UP Faith & Family

Roku channels for $1.99 per month

  • Cinemax

  • Hallmark Movies Now

  • ViX Premium

  • Paramount+ (As low as $1.99/month for 3 months)

Roku channels for $2.99 a month

  • Acorn TV

  • ALLBLK

  • AMC+

  • Peacock ($2.99/month for 3 months for Peacock Premium)

Other Roku offers

  • BET+ ($3.99/month for 3 months)

  • Apple TV+ (3 months free)

Cyber Monday deals on streaming devices

Deals on streaming services are great and all, but they won’t be much use if you don’t have a solid device to stream stuff. Well, I have you covered there, too. Below are five great deals on streaming devices.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite: This cheap-as-chips streaming stick can be yours for the Cyber Monday price of $15.99, marked down from $29.99.

  • Chromecast with Google TV (4k): The 4K version of Google’s streaming device is on sale through Best Buy for $37.99, regular price: $49.99.

  • Roku Ultra: Roku’s top-of-the-line streaming device is selling for $69.00, down from its regular $99.99 price.

  • 2021 Apple TV 4K with 64GB Storage: Amazon’s Cyber Monday price for Apple’s streaming box is $179.95. That’s 10% less than the normal price of $199.99.

  • Tablo 2-Tuner Over-The-Air DVR: This device lets cord-cutters record what they like from their smartphones, Amazon Fire devices, Roku, Google TV, and over-the-air broadcasts, and play it back on any other device in the house. The $79.95 price is 20% off the usual $99.95 price.

How to Take Advantage of Travel Deal Tuesday

The days after Thanksgiving are synonymous with mega deals. You know Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but the trinity is not complete without Travel Tuesday. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday get all the hype for great deals on retail items, Travel Tuesday offers some of the best discounts you’ll find all year for flights, hotels, vacation packages and more. If you’re hoping to save money on upcoming trips, here are some tips for making the most of Travel Tuesday.

How to take advantage of deals on Travel Tuesday

Do a little research first

Yes, time is of the essence. Still, it pays to do your research in advance. Decide where you might want to go on your next vacation and have a few destinations in mind. Sign up for email alerts from airlines, hotels, and travel booking sites to get notices about upcoming sales. This will help you jump on the best deals quickly when they go live on Tuesday.

Be flexible with travel dates and destinations

The best Travel Tuesday discounts are likely to be for off-peak travel times when demand is lower. Being flexible with your dates and travel destinations will open up more money-saving opportunities. January through March tend to be the cheapest months for Caribbean getaways, for example. Trying open-jaw routing for flights or exploring nearby alternative cities can also help you save.

Use fare comparison tools

Don’t simply rely on one travel provider for deals. Comparison shop between airline websites, Expedia, Priceline, and more on Travel Tuesday to make sure you’re finding the best offers. Discounts can vary greatly from one site to the next, even when researching the exact same trip. Set price drop alerts and pounce when you see a fare that meets your budget. I recommend this Chrome extension that searches every airline booking site for the cheapest flights.

Consider package deals

Online travel agencies often offer additional Travel Tuesday price drops when you bundle your flights and hotel. Compared to booking these travel components separately, packages can offer substantial savings. So keep your eye out for bundle deals that provide upgraded accommodations, free Wi-Fi, spa credits and other perks.

Use travel rewards

Quit hoarding your travel points. If you have points from credit card reward programs sitting around, check to see if they can be transferred to your airline partner of choice. When you want to redeem your transferable credit card points on flights, you can purchase them through the travel site specific to the bank (like Amex Travel), or you can transfer your points directly into your frequent flyer program and book flights based on that program’s award rates.

With advance planning and smart strategy, Travel Tuesday makes booking your next vacation much more affordable. For more, check out Lifehacker’s resident deals expert Daniel Oropeza’s favorite websites for all the best travel deals.

The Best Apple Watch Deals on Cyber Monday

For iPhone users, there’s no better smartwatch than the Apple Watch. It has the tightest integration with the Apple ecosystem, is a great fitness tracker, and strikes a great balance between features and battery life. As with all Apple devices, though, the nicer models are pricey, but you can get one for less than its list price on Cyber Monday.

The best Cyber Monday sales on Apple Watches directly from Apple

Apple is offering a $50 gift card if you buy an Apple Watch Series 9 or an Apple Watch SE directly from their site. You can use this gift card on other Apple products, so if you plan to buy multiple Apple products, you might want to place separate orders to use your gift cards.

Many people prefer buying Apple products directly from the company’s online store to guarantee a genuine product and so they don’t have to worry about dealing with third-party sellers. Apple’s online store can also offer a wider variety of color options that may be missing from third-party sites. So if you prefer not to buy from a third party, you can still get a good Cyber Monday deal on your new Apple Watch.

The best Cyber Monday sales on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

If you want the best Apple Watch money can buy, the Ultra 2 is the best choice. The lowest Cyber Monday sale price on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is $739 on Amazon, which is down from its usual price of $799. If you don’t mind getting the older model, the original Apple Watch Ultra is going for $659 at Target. That’s a really good price to get an Apple Watch designed for hiking, triathlons, and other adventure sports.

The best Cyber Monday sales on the Apple Watch Series 9

The Series 9 is a great Apple Watch for those who want the latest features but don’t need the additional battery life or extra features from the Ultra. These are the best deals on the Apple Watch Series 9 for Cyber Monday:

The best Apple Watch SE sale on Cyber Monday

The cheapest Apple Watch offers great value for people who need notifications, fitness tracking, and a budget-friendly price. The best Apple Watch SE deal on Cyber Monday comes from Target. It’s on sale for $269.99, down from the original price of $329.99.

These Are the Best Cyber Monday Deals on Self-care Tools

Around this time of year, you shop for gifts for everyone else, but don’t forget about yourself this Cyber Monday. Shopping holidays should always include some splurges—sorry, “self-care”—for the shopper in question. These self-care deals are left over from Black Friday, but if you spent all weekend focusing on everybody else, you still have time to snap up some goods for yourself.

Cyber Monday deals on hair tools

The wide world of haircare has only gotten wider lately, with fancy doodads and gadgets that our foremothers could only dream of when they were using literal irons to straighten their tresses. These things are pricey, though, so Cyber Monday is a great time to stock up.

  • The Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler is on sale at Nordstrom for $499.99, down from $599.99. This is the latest version, which includes longer curling barrels and a smoothing dryer attachment. If you’ve been on the fence about an Airwrap, today could be the day to just go for it. Trust me, it works.

  • The L’Ange Hair 2-in-1 titanium blow dryer brush is on sale on Amazon for $53.40, down from $119. These things effortlessly dry hair while volumizing and smoothing, giving you a fresh, blown-out look after a wash.

  • A Chi titanium flat iron is $65.99 at Ulta (down from $109.99), so Cyber Monday is a fabulous day to pick up a classic tool that has withstood the test of time. If your mom never let you get the Chi in middle school and made you make do with a less expensive (and less effective) economy brand, this is your big moment.

Cyber Monday deals on skincare tools

Skincare is another element of self care that you can do on the cheap, but it just feels better when you use the higher-quality products. These tools are on sale for the big day, which is good news, since they usually cost a significant chunk of cash.

  • The Foreo Luna 4 facial cleanser and massager is $64.50 at Kohl’s, down from $129. With eight intensities and two kinds of brush heads, it’s perfect for getting a thorough clean on your most delicate skin.

  • The viral SolaWave 4-in-1 skincare wand is $143.65 at Saks, down from $169. You’ve probably seen it all over your social feeds, but wouldn’t it be nicer to see it in your bathroom? It uses red light therapy, galvanic current, therapeutic warmth, and facial massage to replicate the benefits of an in-spa facial and comes with a travel case, too.

  • The super-popular NuFace MINI+ facial toning microcurrent kit is $175 at Ulta, down from $250. In conjunction with the included gel and cream, the device tightens and firms your facial skin, gradually giving you a more contoured look.

Cyber Monday deals on relaxation tools

Sometimes, self-care is just about relaxing. Make that a little easier with these deals on gadgets designed to soothe.

  • The Theragun mini massager is $149, down from $199. Plus, you can use your FSA card to buy it, which is even more of a deal. That’s your pre-taxed money, not the money from your checking account, so if you lie to yourself a little, it’s like you’re not spending anything at all. Delusion is the root of true relaxation, but a massage gun helps, too.

  • Amazon is selling Byriver foot reflexology slippers for $22.39, down from $34.99, to help you relax and do some self-care even if you’re just wandering around the house. Slip these on before cooking for the holidays or wrapping gifts and you’ll be doing yourself a favor while you help others.

  • Finally, grab a cordless, heated neck massager from KNQZE on Amazon to complete your at-home spa experience. This wearable is $47.98, down from $79.99.
