Kakao Co-CEO Resigns After Its Datacenter Fire Locked 53 Million Users Out

Whon Namkoong, the co-chief executive of Kakao, has resigned in a remarkable demonstration of corporate accountability after a fire incident at an SK C&C data center in the south of Seoul caused a mass outage over the weekend and disrupted Kakao’s several services, including messenger, ride-hailing, payment, banking and gaming. TechCrunch reports: Namkoong, who joined Kakao in 2015, was elevated to the co-CEO role this March. At a press conference on Wednesday, co-CEOs of Kakao apologized for the mass outage “for such an extended period.” Namkoong said that he feels “the heavy burden of responsibility” over the incident, adding that the company will do its best to restore the faith of users. Euntaek Hong, co-CEO of Kakao, who led the firm alongside Namkoong and is currently leading Kakao’s emergency taskforce team, will remain the firm as the sole head of Kakao, per a company filing.

Kakao said today morning it had restored additional services like Kakaomail and TalkChannel. Most of its services are in almost full operation, with some remaining partially down. Kakao’s slow recovery process was caused by the company’s lack of owned server infrastructure and “high dependence” on the SK C&C data center, which caught fire, analysts at Bernstein said in a report this week. Kakao also didn’t have a well-distributed backup system, they added. Hong said at a press conference today that the company plans to invest 460 billion KRW (~$325 million) to build its own data center from next year, aiming to complete it in the following year. According to a report in August, the company said its Kakao Talk messenger app has more than 47 million active users in South Korea and 53 million globally.

5 of the Trashiest Emails I've Gotten From Parler

In fall 2020 I was making a lot of really bad life decisions. I don’t know if it was the stress of the pandemic, the chaos in my personal life, or my journalistic obligations to stay up on tech news, but for some reason I decided to sign up for Parler. That wasn’t the biggest mistake I made that year, but it’s one…

Get an Exclusive Look at a New Horror Short Coming From 3 Comics Legends

We’ve seen tons of comic books made into live-action films—but Room Service, an in-the-works horror short, flips the script a bit: it’s an original live-action film made by three acclaimed comics creators: Eisner Award winner James Tynion IV (The Nice House on the Lake, Something Is Killing the Children) wrote the…

Make These Three-Ingredient Nutella Mummy Tarts

Puff pastry is the impressive main element in dozens of sophisticated desserts because of its structure, rich flavor, and versatility. It’s also exactly what I needed to make a thoroughly unsophisticated Halloween dessert. These mummy Nutella tarts require only three ingredients and an oven—you don’t even need any …

AI is changing scientists’ understanding of language learning

Is living in a language-rich world enough to teach a child grammatical language?

Unlike the carefully scripted dialogue found in most books and movies, the language of everyday interaction tends to be messy and incomplete, full of false starts, interruptions and people talking over each other. From casual conversations between friends, to bickering between siblings, to formal discussions in a boardroom, authentic conversation is chaotic. It seems miraculous that anyone can learn language at all given the haphazard nature of the linguistic experience.

For this reason, many language scientists—including Noam Chomsky, a founder of modern linguistics—believe that language learners require a kind of glue to rein in the unruly nature of everyday language. And that glue is grammar: a system of rules for generating grammatical sentences.

Children must have a grammar template wired into their brains to help them overcome the limitations of their language experience—or so the thinking goes.

Apple Watch Series 8 returns to an all-time low of $349

Don’t worry if you missed out on initial discounts for the Apple Watch Series 8 — they’re back. Amazon is once again selling the 41mm GPS smartwatch at the all-time low price of $349 that you saw during the Prime Day Early Access sale. The deal only applies to this smaller case size and rules out cellular models, but you’ll have your choice of colors.

Buy Apple Watch Series 8 at Amazon – $349

The Apple Watch Series 8 is a slight step up from the Series 7, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing at this price. The new wristwear adds crash detection that could prove useful in an emergency, while temperature monitoring can help track ovulation cycles if you’re trying to conceive. The features we liked from Series 7 are still intact, including an excellent always-on display, brisk performance (including charging) and a robust operating system.

That does mean some hitches remain. Apple’s sleep tracking is relatively limited even with watchOS 9. And while the new low-power mode can stretch battery life, you’ll likely still want to charge every day. And if you don’t need the always-on screen or advanced health tracking, the Apple Watch SE offers much of the core experience for less. When the price difference is down to $100, however, the Series 8 is considerably easier to justify.

How to Plan a (Relatively) Cheap Thanksgiving

Grocery prices are being what they are in 2022, I’m not looking forward to Thanksgiving shopping.
