iFixit says the Playdate is a surprisingly repairable Game Boy throwback

The teardown artists at iFixit have gotten their hands on the banana-yellow plastic Playdate, the be-cranked retro throwback handheld gaming system we previewed last month ahead of its launch later this year. And just as Game Boys of yore are simple to take apart, fix, and rebuild, the Playdate will be relatively easy to fix if you ever need to replace its battery or buttons.

The most interesting findings: The Playdate’s signature crank uses a Hall effect sensor rather than a spring or another kind of wear-out-able physical mechanism, so it shouldn’t suffer from drift over time like some console controller joysticks do. And while there is a warranty sticker inside the Playdate, it specifically says that you’ll void the system’s warranty if you break anything inside it, not that you’ll void it just by taking the system apart. This strikes a good balance between “don’t come in here if you don’t know what you’re doing” and “we trust you to make your own repairs if you need to.”

The teardown also gives us a few specifics on the Playdate’s intentionally low-powered hardware, which includes a 216MHz ARM Cortex M7 processor, 128 megabits (or 16MB) of RAM, and 4GB of eMMC storage. The one major complaint iFixit had is that the LCD screen appears to be glued to the front of the Playdate—replacing the screen will probably necessitate replacing the entire rest of the casing as well. But since the front of the Playdate is simple yellow plastic rather than metal and glass, this part shouldn’t cost as much as it does when your phone’s screen breaks.

Musk turns on Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving beta, says it’s “actually not great”

If you haven’t been impressed with what you’ve seen of Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving beta, version 9.2, you’re not alone. CEO Elon Musk agrees.

“FSD Beta 9.2 is actually not great imo,” he said in a tweet last night, “but Autopilot/AI team is rallying to improve as fast as possible.”

While Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature can perform impressively at times, videos from beta testers show it falling short at critical moments. In one video, a car approaching a small construction site suddenly steers toward a hole marked by orange cones. Earlier betas have seen Teslas successfully making turns in city streets before surging toward parked cars or scratching themselves by plowing through overgrown bushes extending into the right of way.

How to Best Manage Remote Workers

One of the few silver linings of the pandemic is that it led to businesses big and small finally recognizing all the advantages associated with remote work. Thanks to that, even as lockdown restrictions are lifted around the world, many companies have decided to stick with remote work, or adopt a hybrid approach.

That said, while remote work is better in many ways, it also creates some unique challenges for managers. If your company is adopting this system in the long term, here’s how you can go about managing your remote team in a way that will help your business succeed.

1 – Clear expectations

One of the challenges of remote work is giving employees the tools they need to make decisions on how to organize their time and focus on their work. They won’t have the clear structure that comes with spending 8 hours in the office, which will improve their flexibility but can harm their capacity for consistent output.

The solution is to make your expectations clear for your team, figure out how to measure their performance, and give them key goals to achieve. A good workforce management platform can facilitate and automate many of these processes, and having one is nearly mandatory for any team composed of more than three or four people.

2 – Training resources

Remote workers can’t just tap a co-worker on the shoulder to ask questions and get demonstrations on how to perform different tasks. Make sure you make all the information your workers will need available for them, be it through an employee guide, an online learning platform, or even a simple series of onboarding emails with links to relevant online guides.

It can also be useful to assign a veteran employee to mentor and guide a newcomer through email and video calls.

3 – Two-channel communication

Being unable to reach an employee or confirm that they have gotten your message can cause serious issues, especially when dealing with time-sensitive problems. So make sure that on top of communicating through email, your team also has a second communication channel they can use for emergencies — preferably an instant messaging service. The second channel can also be used whenever there is an issue with the primary channel.

Having two channels also helps to signal to employees which messages they should answer right away and which can wait until their next work session. Working from home can lead to employees feeling like they’re never off the clock, and separating priority and non-priority messages can help with that issue.

4 – Look for signs of distress

It is much harder to tell when an employee is distressed or overworked when your primary form of contact with them happens via text, so make sure you’re keeping an eye out for potential signs of distress. Changes in online behavior, total output, or work quality can all be the results of an employee who’s close to burning out or who is struggling with some personal problem.

5 – Clear communication

Take the time to make sure any requests and assignments you give out to workers are as clear as possible and encourage them to ask questions if they have any. Written communication isn’t the most effective at conveying tone and intent, and any time your employee spends trying to puzzle out what you want is time they could have spent being productive.

With nothing able to eat them, cane toads are eating each other

The cane toad may be the poster animal for invasive species. Native to South America, it has been introduced to many other ecosystems in the hope it would chow down on agricultural pests. Instead, the toad has become a pest itself, most notably in Australia. Free from the predators and parasites in its native range, the toad’s poison glands have turned out to be a hazard for most species that try to eat it where it’s been introduced.

But that doesn’t mean that it’s completely free of the risk of predation. Australian cane toad tadpoles have been observed feeding on their fellow cane toad offspring. This cannibalism seems to be an evolutionary response to the lack of competing species in its invasive range, causing cane toads to turn on their remaining competition: each other. And the toad has already turned to an additional evolutionary response to try to limit the danger of cannibalism.

Only competing with themselves

From an evolutionary perspective, cannibalism can make sense as a way to limit the competition posed by other members of your species. But the research team at the University of Sydney that has tracked the cane toad’s cannibalism suggests that the species’ successful invasion of Australia has accentuated this evolutionary pressure—something that may also occur with other invasive predators. One of the marks of an invasive species is its abundance in its new range, at which point competition for limited resources becomes more likely. Cannibalism not only limits this competition but provides nutritional resources as well.

Footage showing harsh conditions of Iran’s Evin prison allegedly leaked by hackers

A guard assigned in Evin prison’s control room was immediately alerted as monitors suddenly blinked off then flashed “cyberattack”.

Another screen showed “general protest until the freedom of political prisoners”.

The alleged hackers, who call themselves “The Justice of Ali” shared some footage of the incident, as well as other clips showing the harsh conditions faced by Evin’s prisoners.

One of the footage shows a man smashing a bathroom mirror and tries to cut his arm open while another scene captured prisoners and guards beating each other.

An Iranian human activist and four former prisoners at Evin have confirmed that some of the scenes resembled areas of the facility.

The hackers claim that the hack was conducted several months ago but did not disclose who was behind the leak.

The timing of the leak coincided with the recent election of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
