I Must Have One: An Elevated TIE Fighter Fire Pit/Mini BBQ

This is the elevated TIE fighter fire pit (trying saying that five times fast. Then we’ll both chug a beer, do a bat spin and wrestle!) created by artist Simon Gould (contact him for more info). Obviously, I must have one, as my current fire pit is starting to draw some harsh criticism from my neighbors. “It’s a 55-gallon drum.” So? “So you burn trash in it all hours of the day and night.” And? “And it’s in your parking spot at your apartment.” THAT SPOT IS PART OF MY RENT.

Keep going for a couple shots and the whole video.

Predator: Hunting Grounds Is Only Fun When The Predator Is Around

Predator: Hunting Grounds takes the original film’s concept—a small squad of soldiers on a mission in the jungle are ambushed by a deadly alien hunter—and turns it into an asymmetrical multiplayer game. It seems like a logical and fun adaptation, but some mediocre gunplay and long waits bog the whole experience down.

It's Time to Live on a Budget, Even if You're Financially Secure

There are two big unknowns in all of our lives right now: What’s going to happen with the COVID-19 pandemic, and what it will mean for the economy. If we enter a post-pandemic recession (or are already in a mid-pandemic recession), what will that mean for our jobs and livelihoods—and what should we be doing…

This Tech Conference Is Being Held on an Animal Crossing Island

As our lives have become a seemingly endless series of work meetings on Zoom and FaceTime or WhatsApp catch-ups with friends, we’re all getting a bit sick of seeing people’s faces enclosed in a cold, almost lifeless, digital frame. A tech worker from New York had a different idea for his tech conference, which he announced, in all seriousness, on April Fools’ Day. The free conference is called Deserted Island DevOps and is happening on Thursday, entirely inside Animal Crossing, the Nintendo Switch hit game released in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. From a report: Speakers are doing their talks on an island in Animal Crossing specifically built for the conference, and attendees can follow along in the game, on Twitch, or Zoom, as a fallback option. Other than the unusual, and incredibly colorful and fun setting, the conference is very much like any other conference. The speakersâ(TM) avatars are standing behind a podium, their slides are being displayed next to them, and attendees sit in the audience. Crucially, the conference isn’t about Animal Crossing, it’s kind of a standard software development type conference. It just happens to be happening inside a video game.

Glowing Blue Waves Lighting Up SoCal Coastline Roll Into the South Bay

Crashing waves emitting a flash of neon blue have lit up darkened stretches of Southern California’s coastline this month, most recently making an appearance in the South Bay. From a report: The sporadic phenomenon — sometimes called sea sparkle — is something scientists have been studying for 120 years. It’s associated with a red tide, or an algae bloom, made up of organisms called dinoflagellates. These tiny single-celled organisms are common members of the coastal plankton community that float on or near the ocean’s surface and can emit bioluminescence, most commonly when they’re grabbed by a predator. The light acts to startle their attacker, according to Michael Latz, a marine biologist with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

Occasionally, the organisms are found in high concentrations, resulting in red tides and known for giving the ocean water a deep red, brown or orange hue during the day. At night, they can put on a truly spectacular show when jostled by a crashing wave or the wake of a boat. Red tides are difficult to predict, and not all of them produce bioluminescence. Scientists still aren’t sure about all the factors that lead to them, Latz said.

The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV is solid but lacks advanced features

When the Chevrolet Bolt EV first took to the streets at the end of 2016, it was a groundbreaking little car—the first battery electric vehicle with more than 200 miles (321km) of range at a price normal people could afford. But three years is an eternity in the electric car world. In the time since the Bolt showed up, similarly priced BEVs have appeared from other automakers, cars with features that the Bolt won’t get until its midlife refresh—something that won’t now happen until 2021 thanks to COVID-19. But Chevy did recently bump up the Bolt’s range with better battery chemistry and a bigger capacity, and it’s offering discounts of up to $8,500 on the once-groundbreaking BEV. We spent another week with one to see whether it still measures up.

The main difference between the model year 2020 Bolt EV and the ones we’ve driven in the past is in the battery. Chevrolet wanted more range, so LG Chem came up with some new lithium-ion chemistry that boosted energy density. The pack is still the same size and shape, and it’s still made up of 288 individual cells, but it now has a useable 66kWh (as opposed to 60kWh), and that means an increase of its EPA range from 238 miles (383km) to 259 miles (416km).

Other than that, the compact BEV is pretty much as we knew it at launch. It still has the same 200hp (150kW), 366lb-ft (360Nm) permanent magnet synchronous motor driving the front wheels. It still only DC fast-charges at 55kW, adding 100 miles of range in 30 minutes, although software tweaks mean it should charge more rapidly than before in cold temperatures). And it still doesn’t offer adaptive cruise control or the excellent Super Cruise driver assist.

360-Degree Pannable VR Video Of The First Hydrogen Bomb Explosion

virtual-reality-nuclear-explosion.jpg

This is a pannable VR recreation of the detonation of the ‘Ivy Mike’ thermonuclear device on the Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1952, the first full-scale detonation of a hydrogen bomb. Just make sure you’re pointed in the right direction for the explosion, because I missed it the first time staring at some trees. In the real apocalypse you’ll only get one chance.

Keep going for the video, actual detonation at 1:45, followed by some info about the effects of the bomb on the area, as well as some current footage of the island and its inhabitants, who were allowed to return in 1980.

[$] Authenticated Btrfs

Developers who are concerned about system integrity often put a fair amount
of effort into ensuring that data stored on disk cannot be tampered with
without being detected.
Technologies like dm-verity
and fs-verity are attempts to solve this
problem, as is the recently covered integrity
policy enforcement security module
. More Recently, Johannes Thumshirn
has posted a patch
series
adding filesystem-level authentication to Btrfs; it promises to
provide integrity with a surprisingly small amount of code.
