Locked and loaded: Terminator: Dark Fate trailer gives us even more Ah-nold

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Edward Furlong reprise their respective iconic roles in Terminator: Dark Fate.

Paramount Pictures marked the anniversary of the Terminator franchise’s original fictional Judgement Day (August 29, 1997) with the release of a full-length trailer for its forthcoming film, Terminator: Dark Fate. It’s technically the sixth film in the series, but it’s actually been conceived as a direct sequel to the hugely successful first two films in the franchise: Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

So Terminator: Dark Fate pretty much ignores all the other Terminator movies as existing in alternate timelines—an attempt to go back to the glory days of the franchise, complete with the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Edward Furlong, and Linda Hamilton, plus James Cameron on board as producer. Per the official synopsis, “27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a new, modified liquid metal Terminator (Gabriel Luna) is sent from the future by Skynet in order to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a hybrid cyborg human (Mackenzie Davis), and her friends. Sarah Connor comes to their aid, as well as the original Terminator, for a fight for the future.”

The first teaser dropped in May, whereupon we learned that Dani has been on the run with her friends for a couple of years under the protection of soldier assassin Grace, the human/cyborg hybrid. And Luna’s Rev-9 Terminator can actually split in two, the better to take out its target(s). An understandably suspicious Sarah nonetheless teams up with Grace to protect Dani and her friends, and we had a brief glimpse of Schwarzenegger’s grizzled old Terminator, apparently hiding out in a remote cabin in the woods, ready to come to their aid as well.

Worrying About 'Bulky' Muscles on Women Is Some Sexist Bullshit

Strength training for women is spoken about in code words. We’re supposed to fear getting “bulky” and instead want to build “long, lean muscles.” Guys are told in no uncertain terms that lifting will make them big, muscular, jacked; women, somehow, will only get “toned.” This is patriarchal bullshit that obscures how…

As investigations into a massive, coordinated ransomware attack against local governments in Texas continues, 13 new victims of ransomware attacks have been publicly identified. Most of them are school districts, thought the victims also include an Indiana county, a hospice in California, and a newspaper in Watertown, New York.

The ransomware involved in the Texas attacks, which hit 22 local-level government entities, has not yet been identified.  Multiple sources have suggested that the Texas attacker gained access through a managed service provider that the local governments all had in common, but that has not been confirmed by state officials.

In the case of this latest batch of attacks, Ryuk ransomware has been identified as the malware used on at least three occasions. The victims, based on data collected by the threat research group at cloud security firm Armor, include:

Much Fridge Food 'Goes There To Die'

Americans throw out a lot more food than they expect they will, food waste that is likely driven in part by ambiguous date labels on packages, a new study has found. From a report: “People eat a lot less of their refrigerated food than they expect to, and they’re likely throwing out perfectly good food because they misunderstand labels,” said Brian Roe, the study’s senior author and a professor of agricultural, environmental and development economics at The Ohio State University.

This is the first study to offer a data-driven glimpse into the refrigerators of American homes, and provides an important framework for efforts to decrease food waste, Roe said. It was published online this month in the journal Resources, Conservation & Recycling. Survey participants expected to eat 97 percent of the meat in their refrigerators but really finished only about half. They thought they’d eat 94 percent of their vegetables, but consumed just 44 percent. They projected they’d eat about 71 percent of the fruit and 84 percent of the dairy, but finished off just 40 percent and 42 percent, respectively.

BMW Paints One Of Their X6 SUVs With Vantablack

vantablack-bmw-1.jpg

This is a video of BMW painting one of their new X6 SUVs with the 99% light absorbing Vantablack VBx2 from Surrey NanoSystems. Some more info while I paint a fur bikini-clad barbarian woman with a sword on the hood of my Civic Hybrid. That’s gotta be good for a 10-horsepower boost, right?

The VBx2 variant of Vantablack has a one-per-cent total hemispherical reflectance, meaning it is still considered super-black while enabling a small amount of reflection from every angle.

“We realised that it wouldn’t have worked if we’d put on the original Vantablack material, as the viewer would have lost all sense of three-dimensionality,” said Ben Jensen, Vantablack inventor and founder of Surrey NanoSystems.

“It worked really well because of the size of the car, its distinctive shape, and how imposing it is,” he continued. “VBx2 with its one-per-cent reflectance provides just enough of a hint of shape.”

Meh, you should have gone all the way. I WANTED to lose all sense of three-dimensionality. But you took it away from me, didn’t you? *banging fist on table* YOU TOOK IT ALL AWAY. “Jeez, GW, calm down.” I’m sorry, it’s just really easy to get worked up about things that has zero bearing on my life whatsoever.

Keep going for a couple more shots and the video.

I Keep Quitting Dragon Quest XI Thanks To Its Atrocious Music

Ever since my friend and Kotaku comrade in arms Tim Rogers reviewed Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age last year with glowing praise, I’ve been trying desperately to play it. A very deep dive into iOS Exploit chains found in the wild (Project Zero)

It’s not Linux but is worth a read: Google’s Project Zero blog has a
highly detailed analysis
of several iOS exploits and how they were used
to compromise large numbers of devices. “There’s something thus far which is conspicuous only by its absence: is any of this encrypted? The short answer is no: they really do POST everything via HTTP (not HTTPS) and there is no asymmetric (or even symmetric) encryption applied to the data which is uploaded. Everything is in the clear. If you’re connected to an unencrypted WiFi network this information is being broadcast to everyone around you, to your network operator and any intermediate network hops to the command and control server.

This means that not only is the end-point of the end-to-end encryption
offered by messaging apps compromised; the attackers then send all the
contents of the end-to-end encrypted messages in plain text over the
network to their server.“

Is Microsoft's Folding Display Patent A Precursor To A Dual-Screen Surface PC?
A recently published patent application filed in the US by Microsoft describes a “multi-sided electromagnetic coil access assembly” that would be the crux of a folding PC display. Or in other words, think of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, only instead of a phone that opens up into a tablet, this could be a dual-display variant of a future Surface
