How Much Should I Regret Not Buying Bitcoin?

The first bitcoin transaction ever was by man who bought two pizzas. That arrangement would be worth over a $100 million today. Regret was baked into Bitcoin from the beginning. Last year, somewhat inexplicably, Bitcoin’s price rose more than 1,000 percent. That number has since dipped, but a single bitcoin is still,…

Things Apple's $350 HomePod Smart-Speaker Can't Do: Answer Random Questions, Check Calendar, Work With an Android Phone, and More

In June last year, Apple announced the HomePod, its first smart-speaker which will battle Amazon’s sleeper hit Echo speakers and Google’s Home speakers. Apple being late to enter a product category is nothing new, but the HomePod has a few other strange things about it. Apple said it won’t begin shipping the HomePod until December that year, in a departure of its own tradition. Then the device’s shipment was delayed till “early 2018” — February 9 is the current shipping date. Bloomberg has reported about the difficulties Apple engineers faced over the years to come up with the HomePod. At any rate, Business Insider now has more information about the device, and is reporting the things that Apple’s first smart-speaker won’t be able to do. From the report (condensed): 1. HomePod can’t pair with Android phones. 2. HomePod doesn’t recognize different people’s voices. 3. HomePod can’t check your calendar. 4. HomePod doesn’t work well with other streaming services besides Apple Music. (Spotify, Tindal, and Pandora users won’t be able to use Siri.) 5. HomePod can’t hook up to another device using an auxiliary cord. 6. HomePod can’t make calls on its own. (In order to make a call using HomePod, you have to dial the person’s number on your iPhone, then manually select that the call play through HomePod.) 7. The HomePod version of Siri isn’t prepared to answer random questions like Alexa and Google Assistant.

The Shower Rat Is Very Obviously Not Cleaning Itself

It’s very easy to look at an animal mimicking a human-like behavior and think “Wow! That animal is doing a human thing! It looks so cute and happy” (because humans are so cute and happy, right?) That is almost never the case. If an animal looks weird, it probably is weird—and not in a good way.

NASA has gone a year without a formal leader—with no end in sight

Enlarge / Astronaut Charles Bolden served as NASA’s administrator for more than seven years. (credit: NASA)

More than a year has now passed since four-time astronaut Charles Bolden resigned as NASA administrator on January 20, 2017, after seven years on the job. NASA has been led by an acting administrator, Robert Lightfoot, ever since. It is unprecedented for NASA to go without formal leadership for this long.

Five months ago, the Trump administration finally put forward a nominee for the post of administrator, Oklahoma Congressman and pilot James Bridenstine. Although he was confirmed along a party-line vote twice during Senate confirmation hearings, he has yet to receive a vote before the full Senate. Increasingly, it is obvious that the White House does not have the votes to confirm Bridenstine in a Senate where Republicans hold only a narrow margin.

Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, has led opposition to Bridenstine, saying he is too politically polarizing a figure to lead NASA. Nelson has convinced his fellow Floridian Senator, Republican Marco Rubio, to oppose Bridenstine as well. However, Nelson’s motivations may not be just the sanctity of NASA’s bipartisanship, as Bridenstine may not be pliable enough for the Florida Senator who is looking out for the interests of Kennedy Space Center. Nelson may be more interested in someone like Kennedy’s director, Bob Cabana, as a potential Bridenstine replacement.

Microsoft Issue Patch to Disable Intel's Patch Issued for Variant 2 which has Issues

Update to Disable Mitigation against Spectre, Variant 2. You know, for when your update was not really an update but rather a downdate, which might be referred to as the poopshow….to say it nicely. Anyway, this should roll back the Intel patch that was causing reboots if you have it impacting any important boxes. Applies to: Windows 7 Service Pack 1Windows 8.1Windows 10 and more.

Intel has reported issues with recently released microcode meant to address Spectre variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715 Branch Target Injection) – specifically Intel noted that this microcode can cause “higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior” and then noted that situations like this may result in “data loss or corruption.” Our own experience is that system instability can in some circumstances cause data loss or corruption. On January 22nd Intel recommended that customers stop deploying the current microcode version on impacted processors while they perform additional testing on the updated solution. We understand that Intel is continuing to investigate the potential impact of the current microcode version and encourage customers to review their guidance on an ongoing basis to inform their decisions.

Intel Moving Away from PC says ZD

ZDNet is suggesting that “Intel will soon stop being a PC-centric company.” Well, when you finally tell the world that every CPU you have made over the last decade is a center for cyberattack, maybe stopping being PC-centric is not such a bad idea. Ah oh, I think I hear the “death of the PC” drums beating again, as they do every other year for the last 20. Of course Intel having some competition from AMD again after 10 years might put a new spin on the ball as well.

Intel has been trying to reduce its dependence on the PC business by moving into data-centric businesses such as the Internet of Things, which includes automated driving. These made up 47 percent of revenues in fiscal 2017, so in the next few years, the PC could become a minority.

Quiet Threadripper Overclocked Coolling

We pushed out our review of Enermax’ new LiqTech TR4 280 AIO cooler for all Threadripper CPUs. We put it to the test using a highly overclocked 1950X, and Enermax still continues to impress while being the only company truly in the TR4 AIO market with a properly sized and configured cold plate.

You [H]|Club assignment for today is to see how many time you can interject the name “LiqTech” into a conversation with a normie.

First 'Jackpotting' Attacks Hit US ATMs

Brian Krebs, reporting for Krebs on Security: ATM “jackpotting” — a sophisticated crime in which thieves install malicious software and/or hardware at ATMs that forces the machines to spit out huge volumes of cash on demand — has long been a threat for banks in Europe and Asia, yet these attacks somehow have eluded U.S. ATM operators. But all that changed this week after the U.S. Secret Service quietly began warning financial institutions that jackpotting attacks have now been spotted targeting cash machines here in the United States. To carry out a jackpotting attack, thieves first must gain physical access to the cash machine. From there they can use malware or specialized electronics — often a combination of both — to control the operations of the ATM. On Jan. 21, 2018, KrebsOnSecurity began hearing rumblings about jackpotting attacks, also known as “logical attacks,” hitting U.S. ATM operators. I quickly reached out to ATM giant NCR Corp. to see if they’d heard anything. NCR said at the time it had received unconfirmed reports, but nothing solid yet.

Tell Us Your Atlanta Tips

They made an entire city out of that Donald Glover show. And it’s got lots of tricks to it. If you need to get to a street called Peachtree, make sure it’s definitely the Peachtree Street, and not the 70 other Atlanta streets with “Peachtree” in the name. And when an inch of snow freaks out the city, stay off the road…
