One in 50 of Us is Face Blind — and Many Don't Even Realize

An anonymous reader shares a report: Ever found yourself confronted by someone who seems to knows you, but you have no idea who they are? You could be suffering from prosopagnosia, a condition that new research shows affects more people in the UK than autism, yet largely goes undetected. Also known as face blindness, the condition makes those who have it — including Brad Pitt and the late neuroscientist Oliver Sacks — unable to recognise other people, and sometimes even themselves, by their face alone. It is believed to affect as many as one in 50 Britons. Dr Sarah Bate, an associate professor of psychology at Bournemouth University, is developing face-training programs to help those with face blindness learn management tools. She says many people with the condition go undiagnosed. Its impact can be severe if undetected.

New Windows patch disables Intel’s bad Spectre microcode fix

Microsoft has released a new Windows patch to disable Intel’s hardware-based mitigation for the Spectre attack due to bugs introduced by Intel’s mitigation.

In the wake of the Spectre and Meltdown attacks that use the speculative execution behavior of modern processors to leak sensitive information, Intel released a microcode update that offers operating systems additional controls over the processor’s ability to predict branches. When paired with corresponding operating system changes, the extra controls can prevent the unwanted information disclosure.

Unfortunately, Intel discovered earlier this month that the microcode updates are causing machines to reboot. Initially this was confirmed to be the case for Haswell and Broadwell chips; Intel later confirmed that it also applied to Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Skylake and Kaby Lake parts. Intel’s advice was to stop deploying the microcode. A week ago the company said that it had isolated the root cause of reboots, at least for Haswell and Broadwell processors, and that it would soon begin testing a new version.

How to Launder $500 Million in Cryptocurrency

Following up from Fridays theft of $500 Million in NEM coins, Bloomberg has posted an article about the hack. According to the article, Coincheck has not disclosed how their system was breached, aside from it wasn’t an inside job. No one knows who owns the accounts that the coins were transferred to, but each has been labeled with an automated tracking tag that reads “coincheck_stolen_funds_do_not_accept_trades : owner_of_this_account_is_hacker.” However the hacker can still use a service to trade the NEM coins to a more anoymized currency to launder them.

Coincheck has also released a press statement about compensation for the theft. The article states that they will “refund to NEM’s holders in coins check wallet in Japanese yen.” And adding that they will carry out repayment from their own funds.

The lesson for crypto-enthusiasts is that exchanges are prime targets for hackers and no place to store your coins. One alternative is to keep the assets in software wallets, which come in online, mobile and desktop varieties. Hardware wallets are dedicated devices that offer an additional layer of security. For the extra paranoid, there is always the analog option: printing out the private keys for your coins on paper.

Florida Firm Sells Twitter Followers and Bots That Retweet Celebrities, Executives, and 'Influencers'

Over the weekend, The New York Times published an expose on an obscure American company called Devumi that sells Twitter followers and bots that automatically retweet celebrities, executives, social media “influencers” and anyone else who will pay. From the report: Devumi sells Twitter followers and retweets to celebrities, businesses and anyone who wants to appear more popular or exert influence online. Drawing on an estimated stock of at least 3.5 million automated accounts, each sold many times over, the company has provided customers with more than 200 million Twitter followers, a New York Times investigation found. The accounts that most resemble real people reveal a kind of large-scale social identity theft. At least 55,000 of the accounts use the names, profile pictures, hometowns and other personal details of real Twitter users, including minors, according to a Times data analysis. […] The actor John Leguizamo has Devumi followers. So do Michael Dell, the computer billionaire, and Ray Lewis, the football commentator and former Ravens linebacker. Kathy Ireland, the onetime swimsuit model who today presides over a half-billion-dollar licensing empire, has hundreds of thousands of fake Devumi followers, as does Akbar Gbajabiamila, the host of the show “American Ninja Warrior.” Even a Twitter board member, Martha Lane Fox, has some. Hours after the report was published, New York attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, opened an investigation into Devumi. “Impersonation and deception are illegal under New York law,” Mr. Schneiderman said. “We’re opening an investigation into Devumi and its apparent sale of bots using stolen identities.”

Well It's About Time: Elon Musk Selling $500 Flamethrowers

elon-musk-flamethrowers.jpg

To help fund his Boring Company projects, Elon Musk has begun accepting preorders for the $500 Boring Company flamethrower (plus applicable taxes and fees — mine came out to $559.16 with $47 in taxes and $11.66 UPS ground shipping before I bailed on the order). As cool as the concept is, I’d hardly call them flamethrowers, they’re more flametossers. They barely have any range! Besides, how awesome can a flamethrower be that’s advertised as the “world’s safest?” I don’t want the world’s safest flamethrower! For reference, you can get what I’d consider a real flamethrower like one of these for around $600 – $900. Now those things will actually do some ranged burninating. Still, if you want one of these you can order one, and I will absolutely play with it at your next barbecue. Probably inside waging battle against a 12-pack of paper towels.

Keep going for two short Instagram videos of the flamethrowers, including Elon running at his cameraman with one.

FCC Chairman Slams Trump Team's Proposal To Nationalize 5G

The Federal Communications Commission’s Republican chairman on Monday opposed a plan under consideration by the Trump White House to build a 5G mobile network, nationalizing what has long been the role of private wireless carriers like AT&T and Verizon. From the report: “I oppose any proposal for the federal government to build and operate a nationwide 5G network,” he said. The FCC’s reaction doesn’t bode well for the proposal the Trump administration is considering, first reported by Axios on Sunday night, since it’s one of the main government agencies when it comes to wireless issues.

First at Gunpoint Bitcoin Robbery in UK

How do you steal Bitcoin with a gun? Break into the guy’s house that you know is part of the crypto-wealthy, tie up his wife, take away their baby, then give your mark the option of trading all his crypto over to you or deal with consequences that are likely to make you very amenable. Not many details were given in how the thugs identified the target. Thanks cageymaru.

A mother on the school run told The Mail on Sunday: “I saw four young men in black tracksuits with the hoods pulled up, crossing the road to the property where it took place.”

Research Shows Piracy Can Help Music Sales

A new academic paper published in the Information Economics and Policy journal shows that piracy can help many artists to sell more music. In a paper titled ‘Purchase, pirate, publicize: Private-network music sharing and market album sales’ he examined the effect of BitTorrent-based piracy on both digital and physical music sales.

It makes sense to me, especially with less new music getting put on the radio, it can be difficult to find new artists. We have posted before on how piracy has a positive effect on video games as well, which I chalk up to the lack of demos now days.

“I know that’s a bad thing to say, because I’m part of a music industry that doesn’t like illegal file sharing,” Sheeran said in an interview with CBS. “Illegal file sharing was what made me. It was students in England going to university, sharing my songs with each other.”
