We Don't Even Live There Yet, But Humans Have Already Left Over 400,000 Pounds of Trash on the Moon

It’s inevitable that one day humanity is going to need to live somewhere other than Earth, and our first step towards intergalactic colonization will probably be the moon. The only problem? We’ve only visited it 12 times, and already there’s over 400,000 pounds of garbage up there.

You can read the full press statement here (PDF).
Update: Lisa Su’s preferred remarks during the earnings call (PDF). And she reiterates AMD’s previous thoughts on Meltdown and Spectre exposure.
Security is, and always has been, a fundamental focus for AMD across all our products. We are vigilant about security in both our product design and throughout the product life cycle. As new exploits arise, like we have seen with Spectre and Meltdown, we are dedicated to responding with speed and focus to keep our customers and partners informed and protected.
As a reminder, we believe Meltdown is not applicable to AMD processors. For Spectre Variant 1, we continue actively working with our ecosystem partners on mitigations, including operating system patches that have begun to roll out. We continue to believe that Variant 2 of Spectre is difficult to exploit on AMD processors, however we are deploying CPU microcode patches — in combination with OS updates ― to provide additional mitigation steps.
Longer-term, we have included changes in our future processor cores, starting with our “Zen2” design, to further address potential Spectre-like exploits.
“2017 marked a key inflection point for AMD as we re-shaped our product portfolio, delivered 25 percent annual revenue growth, expanded gross margin and achieved full-year profitability,” said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. “We are even more excited about 2018 as we launch our next wave of high-performance products and continue to position AMD as one of the premier long-term growth companies in the technology industry.”
For Q1 2018, AMD expects revenue to be approximately $1.55 billion, plus or minus $50 million, an increase of 32 percent year-over-year, primarily driven by the strength of the ramp of new Ryzen, GPU and EPYC products.

US Government Investigates Apple Over iPhone Battery Slowdowns
An anonymous reader quotes a report from PhoneDog: The U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating Apple about its updates that slowed performance on iPhones with older batteries. Sources speaking to Bloomberg say that the agencies are looking into whether Apple violated securities laws regarding disclosures about its updates that throttled older iPhones. So far, the DOJ and SEC have requested information from Apple. Because the investigation is still early, it’s unclear if the agencies will actually take an action against Apple. Apple apologized for not being more clear about its actions after the news of its performance-throttling updates came out, but we’ve still seen class action lawsuits and now this investigation come out. The good news is that Apple will be more transparent about iPhone battery health and performance in the future, but for now, it’ll have to deal with the DOJ and SEC.

What Do You Over-Organize?

We start sorting things as kids: Hot Wheels, pencils, the cutest boys in class. We organize our rooms just so, and get mad when our parents mess them up. And we develop new sorting habits as we grow up, some useful (chronological tax documents) and some embarrassing (alphabetized bottles of hot sauce).

Moon to Be Slightly More Moon-y for Some People Tomorrow

At my last job, we used to talk about how the only way to avoid disappointment was by setting clear expectations. In the case of the “Super Blue Blood Moon,” the rest of the internet has set the expectations: that you’ll see it. But for many, that’s not the reality.

Apple under investigation by DOJ, SEC for disclosures of its iPhone slow-down update
Enlarge (credit: Samuel Axon)
Apple’s battery fiasco continues to grow as the US government gets involved. According to a Bloomberg report, the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating if Apple violated securities laws with its disclosures surrounding a software update that intentionally slowed down the performance of older iPhones. The DOJ and SEC have requested more information from Apple on the subject.
No other details have been reported since the investigation is still new. It’s possible that the government is looking into Apple violating the securities laws that require publicly traded companies to disclose accurate financial information, including risk factors associated with investing in the company. The DOJ and SEC may consider the update that included the slow-down practices a risk factor that could affect the company’s stock and one that wasn’t properly disclosed to investors. As of writing this article, Apple’s stock fell 1.02 percent to $166.21 per share.
But this new investigation doesn’t signal definite wrongdoing by Apple—just an investigation by the government to see whether or not wrongdoing occurred. It’s also unclear which securities laws the DOJ and SEC are referencing—and since the probe is private, it’s hard to anticipate when more information about the investigation will be made public.

Video Of An Off-Road Racing Trophy Truck's Insane Suspension In Action
Note: Keep your volume down, camera’s noise-canceling microphone not nearly as impressive as truck’s suspension.
This is a video of an off-road racing trophy truck speeding alongside the road and demonstrating its very impressive suspension system. Man, if my car had suspension like that maybe I wouldn’t be where I am today. “Where are you today?” In a ditch. It’s cool though, I made friends with a raccoon. It ate right out of my hand! Well, technically it took a bite right out of my hand. “You probably have rabies now.” Just like I always wanted when I was a kid.
Keep going for the video.
