Chrome OS 64 beta allows Android apps to run in the background

Smoothly running Android apps on Chrome OS has been a work in progress for years now. Google has done a lot to improve the experience of running mobile apps on its browser-based operating system, and it appears a forthcoming software update could fix one of the remaining problems. A report by Chrome Unboxed details a new feature in Chrome 64 beta called Android Parallel Tasks that lets Android apps run continuously in the background even when you’re actively using another program.

Chrome OS has always allowed users to have multiple programs open at one time, including Chrome OS and Android applications. However, Android apps pause when you click or tap out of their windows. That means the app essentially stops working until you tap back into it to continue using the program. There are some exceptions like Spotify, which will continue to play music even when you’re not actively using the app, but other programs pause all activity until you resume using them.

While this makes sense for smartphone apps, it doesn’t translate well to a desktop. On a traditional PC, one expects to be able to open multiple programs and have them all running continuously, no matter which one is being used at any given moment. Chromebooks, like Google’s expensive Pixelbook, couldn’t do that with Android apps, but it appears Android Parallel Tasks fixes that issue. Each program or app that you have open will run continuously until you manually pause it or close it entirely.

Poor Training of AI may be Cause of Child Exploitation Problem on YouTube

According to current and former contract workers who were responsible for training the YouTube AI, guidelines used to train the AI are often contradictory and confusing and this is causing the issues with child exploitation videos remaining on YouTube. Further, YouTube has promised to hire 10,000 moderators to get rid of inappropriate videos, but they might want to take a look at their guidelines used to train the AI.

These documents and interviews reveal a confusing and sometimes contradictory set of guidelines, according to raters, that asks them to promote “high quality” videos based largely on production values, even when the content is disturbing. This not only allows thousands of potentially exploitative kids videos to remain online, but could also be algorithmically amplifying their reach.

South Korea Latest Country to Enact Cryptocurrency Regulations

South Korea has decided to jump on the cryptocurrency regulation bandwagon and will no longer allow anonymous cryptocurrency accounts. Also, they will have regulators continually monitoring the exchanges from this point on. Further, new legislation may be put into place that would shut down all exchanges of cryptocurrency in South Korea. South Korea is a big player in the crypto market and sweeping changes like this will probably be felt across the global market.

While interest in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have surged this year, there’s a hefty amount of volatility in the crypto market, which is a risk that the South Korean government is trying to cull with regulation. This month, bitcoin’s price hit an all-time high that approached the $20,000 mark after starting the year around $1,000. And along with large price fluctuations, some cryptocurrency exchanges have also been hit with major hacks — South Korean exchange Youbit filed for bankruptcy after losing $35 million to a hack earlier this month and $72 million in a hack that took place in April.

Chrome OS to Allow Android Apps to Run in Parallel

The latest beta of Chrome 64 Beta has a new feature a lot of Chromebook users have been wanting for a long time. In the beta you can now run apps side by side without one of them pausing or causing some kind of weird issue when they aren’t in focus. So keep your fingers crossed that this feature makes it into the 64 Stable release. Check out the video to see how it works.

This works like most users would expect it to, and we can’t wait until this is a universally available feature on Chromebooks with Play Store access. It simply makes the entire experience feel SO MUCH more native. While this is available in Chrome 64 Beta, it is not 100% that we’ll see the feature in 64 Stable, but the liklihood is high and it is a move that will make the overall usability of Chromebooks much, much better.

Chrome Extension with 100,000 Users Caught Pushing Cryptocurrency Miner

Catalin Cimpanu, reporting for BleepingComputer: A Chrome extension with over 105,000 users has been deploying an in-browser cryptocurrency miner to unsuspecting users for the past few weeks. The extension does not ask for user permission before hijacking their CPUs to mine Monero all the time the Chrome browser is open. Named “Archive Poster,” the extension is advertised as a mod for Tumblr that allows users an easier way to “reblog, queue, draft, and like posts right from another blog’s archive.” According to users reviews, around the start of December the extension has incorporated the infamous Coinhive in-browser miner in its source code.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm review: The path to tragedy

Enlarge / Life is also very sad.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm began with the unenviable job of acting as a prologue to a very self-contained story. The first season of the episodic adventure series closed out the story of Chloe Price and Max Caulfield with two possible conclusions. So when Before the Storm promised to focus on the very different friendship between Chloe and Rachel Amber—a character that’s mostly only talked about in the first game—I had my doubts.

Thankfully, the first of Before the Storm’s three episodes nailed the approach. Chloe and Rachel might not get as much time on-screen together as the main season’s duo, but their relationship starts much stronger. An emotionally wounded and uncertain Chloe opens up to Rachel in a way that lets us see how she became the character Max comes to meet. It’s that meat of the story that navigates the prequel through some occasionally rocky B plots.

Whereas 2015’s Life is Strange has a strong conflict at its center—Max and Chloe’s search for a missing Rachel Amber—Before the Storm is more generally about the leading ladies’ search for their place in the world. Chloe is pretty much branded a delinquent from the jump. Rachel doesn’t like that everyone expects her to be perfect. The two outsiders naturally attract each other (romantically, in my playthrough) and barrel along from there.

Piling on expectations

A central mystery does eventually develop in Before the Storm, but it’s still mostly an excuse to push the characters closer together. That’s a good thing. That close relationship is exactly where the game shines brightest—particularly near the end of each individual chapter.

Kodi 18 'Leia' 64-Bit For Windows Is Finally Ready To Replace the 32-bit Version

BrianFagioli shares a report from BetaNews: Earlier this year, we shared with you that a pre-release version of Kodi 18 “Leia” 64-bit for Windows was available. There was a big catch, however — it was not up to par with its 32-bit brother. And so, many people just stuck with the 32-bit version, because, well… why not? It is finally time to make the jump to the 64-bit variant, however, as according to the Kodi team, it is now identical to the 32-bit version from a feature perspective. “The 64-bit Kodi version for Windows is now feature complete and on the same level as 32-bit. From now on the 32-bit installer will include a warning to ask you to install the 64-bit instead. This upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit version is seamless and you just need to install on top of the old version,” says Kodi.
