40% of China's Factories Shuttered in Pollution Crackdown

China has implemented an unprecedented pollution crackdown in recent months as the country shuts down tens of thousands of factories. The effort is part of a national effort to address China’s infamous pollution and has affected wide swaths of China’s manufacturing sector. In total, it is estimated that 40 percent of all China’s factories have been shut down at some point in order to be inspected by environmental bureau officials.

As a result of these inspections over 80,000 factories have been hit with fines and criminal offenses as a result of their emissions. Safety officials have been moving from province to province (30 in total so far) shutting down factories as well as electricity and gas as they inspect the factories for meeting emissions requirements. This has resulted in late and missed orders, increased costs, and could ultimately result in higher prices on US shelves.

CERN Scientists Conclude that the Universe Should Not Exist

Scientists at CERN are bemused as to why the universe exists, according to a new study. From a report, shared by a reader: Recent discoveries suggest that there’s a perfect symmetry between matter and antimatter – meaning it’s not clear why they didn’t annihilate each other upon the birth of the universe. CERN’s latest study sought to find out whether different magnetic properties accounted for matter’s seeming victory after the Big Bang, but found another point of symmetry. Essentially, going by our findings so far, there simply shouldn’t be a universe. Further reading: Universe shouldn’t exist, CERN physicists conclude – Cosmos Magazine.

Sony's Crazy A7R Mark III Is Way More Camera Than You Probably Need, But That's What Makes It So Fun

When it comes to mirrorless cameras, especially pro-grade ones, Sony’s full-frame Alphas are king. Panasonic’s Lumix GH5 and Olympus’ OM-D E-M1 Mark II come close, but both of those have Micro Four Thirds sensors, which for a lot of picky people puts them out of the running. And when Sony released the A9 earlier this…

Waymo starts testing in Michigan to master snow and ice

Enlarge (credit: Waymo)

Waymo announced on Thursday that it is bringing its Chrysler Pacifica minivans to the Detroit area to test how the company’s technology performs in the region’s harsh winters.

“Our ultimate goal is for our fully self-driving cars to operate safely and smoothly in all kinds of environments,” Waymo CEO John Krafcik writes.

Krafcik says that Waymo has been doing cold-weather tests since 2012. But so far Waymo has done most of its testing in sunny places like Mountain View, Calif.; Phoenix, and Austin, Tex. where snow is rare. Waymo believes it has largely mastered driving in sunny climates and is preparing to launch a commercial service in the sun-drenched Phoenix area.

SLS rocket advancing, but its launch date may slip into 2020

NASA

NASA will soon set a new date for the maiden flight of its massive Space Launch System rocket, which will send the Orion spacecraft on a test flight around the Moon. Previously, this flight had been scheduled for 2018, but NASA officials acknowledged earlier this year that the launch date would slip into 2019.

Now, there is the possibility of further delays, although NASA isn’t saying this publicly just yet. On Wednesday, at the Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium in Huntsville, Ala., a key official said a 2019 date is still on the table, because Marshall Space Flight Center expects to deliver the rocket’s core stage to the launch site in Florida by the end of 2018.

ARM Unveils New AI Group

A new machine learning group at ARM will create accelerator cores, blocks for its CPU and GPU cores, and software to tie it all together. Exactly what the group will deliver and when remains under covers. Analysts suggest ARM could be as much as three years behind products from rivals such as Cadence, Ceva, and Synopsys.

ARM declined to share the number of people or budget for the group, run by ARM fellow Jem Davies, best known for a decade working on ARM’s media blocks. Rene Haas, president of ARM’s intellectual property group, defined it simply as “a big team in hardware and software.” “It’s clear we will do [machine learning] in CPUs, GPUs and special purpose cores, but we are not announcing anything yet,” Davies said in a brief one-on-one after a press event at the ARM Tech Con here.
