What You Actually Got From Those Back-of-Magazine Ads

In the days before Google, a tiny, cryptic ad in the back of a magazine had a lot of potential. The seller might not be able to fully describe their product, but if the product wasn’t very good, that may be a plus for them. Here are some bait-and-switch ads from the 1950s and beyond, and what you’d get if you sent in…

South Korea Bans Initial Coin Offerings

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: South Korea’s financial regulator on Friday said it will ban raising money through all forms of virtual currencies, a move that follows similar restrictions in China on initial coin offerings. The Financial Services Commission said all kinds of initial coin offerings (ICO) will be banned as trading of virtual currencies needs to be tightly controlled and monitored. The decision to ban ICOs as a fundraising tool was made as the government sees such issues as increasing the risk of financial scams.

“Raising funds through ICOs seem to be on the rise globally, and our assessment is that ICOs are increasing in South Korea as well,” the regulator said in a statement after a meeting with the finance ministry, the Bank of Korea and the National Tax Service. “Stern penalties” will be issued on financial institutions and any parties involved in issuing of ICOs, the statement added, without elaborating further on the details of those penalties.

Intel 8700K and 8600K Coffee Lake Reviewed at Lab501

A Romanian site, LAB501, has posted its full review of Intel’s new Coffee Lake processors in the form of the Core i7-8700K and Core i5-8600K. Translated link here, but the site is very slow to load. Overclocking took it to an “easy” 5.1GHz, however I would expect some very high temperatures. A good delidding will be needed for sure. Thanks cageymaru.

Coffee Lake is here, the technological progress is real, and Intel has managed a big day launch, as I have not seen for many years. For this reason, next week you will be able to read a second review centered on 8600K, which will complement the information we provide today. Until then, we can not close this release without thanks to those who have made it possible, to those who have restored the competition to the forefront and gave Intel to a serious reason to get on the job. For Coffee Lake, for 4 cores on Core i3, for 6 cores on Core i5, for 5GHz in day-to-day use, let’s all thank AMD for good. Thank you AMD for making this possible !!!

Filched Ford F-150 found from Facebook friend’s photo

Losing your car to thieves sucks. A Greeley, Colorado man had his Ford F-150 truck stolen in 2015 and two years later was still without his main set of wheels. Now, thanks to Facebook, he has his truck back and a suspect is in custody.

Greeley resident Marvin Trevizo filed a police report in 2015 after he went outside to find that his 2003 Ford F-150 wasn’t where he left it. Fast forward to 2017, and it still hadn’t been recovered. A couple weeks ago however, Trevizo was browsing Facebook and a photo caught his attention. It was a very familiar-looking truck that he was seeing because the picture had been “liked” by a sister of one of his Facebook friends. Not only did the truck on Facebook have the same dent as his and the same set of custom wheels, it showed a man by the name of Gustavo Almanza-Pena standing next to it.

Chatting with his Facebook friend, Trevizo discovered that Almanza-Pena occasionally lived at a condo complex in Windsor, Colorado, so he headed over to the complex and saw his stolen truck parked outside. He then went to the Windsor Police Department to inform them of his discovery. Police officers drove to the parking lot, spotted the truck, and noticed a dodgy-looking temporary license plate with an incorrect VIN. Once Trevizo produced the keys to his truck and unlocked it remotely, officers had the truck towed.

Should Scientists Be Posting Their Work Online Before Peer Review?

Earlier this month, when the biotech firm Human Longevity published a controversial paper claiming that it could predict what a person looks like based on only a teeny bit of DNA, it was just a little over a week before a second paper was published discrediting it as flawed and false. The lightening speed with which…

LG is releasing a mosquito-repellent phone, but it probably won’t work

LG has launched a new smartphone, the LG K7i, that the company says will repel mosquitoes using ultrasonic waves. The company claims the device addresses a real concern in the phone’s target market—India—but many scientists say the underlying tech does not, in fact, repel mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are a nuisance in parts of India, and in some cases they carry diseases like dengue fever and the chikungunya virus, which have become common in urban centers. Malaria is also a risk in India. LG is selling consumer electronics devices in India, and it has been marketing a technology called “Mosquito Away,” which claims to repel the mosquitos. The tech has previously appeared in air conditioners and other LG products, and now it’s a key part of the LG K7i’s marketing. LG says its tests of the LG K7i repelled “on average 72 percent of disease-spreading mosquitoes,” according to CNN.

However, the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) and other groups say it won’t work. Texas A&M University entomology professor Dr. Roger Gold spent years running studies that have debunked ultrasonic bug repellant as well. According to the AMCA: “At least 10 studies in the past 15 years have unanimously denounced ultrasonic devices as having no repellency value whatsoever.” The organization goes on to say that nevertheless, the tech has proven to be an “exceedingly effective marketing tool for the repeller manufacturers.”

Spanish Court Orders Google To Delete App Used For Catalan Independence Vote

From a report: Catalonia’s High Court on Friday ordered Google to delete an application that it said Catalan separatists were using to spread information about a disputed independence vote this Sunday. The court said the “On Votar 1-Oct” application on the Google Play smartphone app store opposed an order in September from Spain’s Constitutional Court to suspend the referendum while it determined its legality. The court also ordered Google to block any future applications developed by the gmail address “Onvotar1oct@gmail.com’, according to a written ruling. Nobody at Google in Spain was immediately available to comment.

Boob Goggles Help Women Envision Better Knockers

Not that I have ever seen a big set of hooters in VR before, but this sounds like a very good implementation of VR technology. Chicks, or dudes, I don’t judge, get to see exactly how breast augmentation surgery will look on your after the install.

Gerard Lambe, of the Reflect Clinic in Manchester, said signs show women found the VR-3D device useful as settling nerves before surgery and said the simulations had proved accurate. He said: “The VR visors have been a huge advance, in my eyes. I have been doing plastic surgery for 20 years and augmentation [making them bigger] was a bit in the stone age.
