28-Way NVIDIA GeForce GPU Comparison On Ubuntu: From GeForce 8 To GeForce 1080

After finishing up the tests last week for the GeForce GT 1030 Linux review of this $70 USD passively-cooled graphics card, I ended up getting carried away running more NVIDIA Linux benchmarks and ended up making a much larger comparison — in part for the pre-celebrations with Phoronix turning 13 next week. Here’s a 28-way GeForce graphics card comparison on Ubuntu with GPUs ranging from the GeForce 8600/8800 series through the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

Bitcoin Mining Has Taken all of the AMD RX 580 GPU stock?

So I was perusing the RX 580 section of NewEgg and I noticed that all of the cards are out of stock. Well there is one card for $500, but no sane person would buy that. So where did they all go? Did AMD suddenly stop making RX 580 cards? Or is something more sinister and foreboding going on?

Then I remember this news article Megalith covered that explained how $100 in Bitcoin from the beginning of the mining craze translates to $72.9 million today. My poor RX 480 may never find a Crossfire mate. Really I just was curious about the pricing, but it was alarming to see that nobody can buy a card from major online retailers like NewEgg or Amazon. On EBAY, used RX 480 cards are selling for higher prices than I paid new. RX 580 cards are nearly $400 on EBAY. Heck even R9 290 cards are $220+. Do you think that we will see an AMD VEGA card for sale at launch? Or will it become a unicorn because of the Bitcoin mining craze?

Is Alkaline Water Just a Way of Making Expensive Pee?

Nutrition is a battlefield where everyone seems to have an opinion. Some of those opinions are science-based, and others are veiled quackery with little evidence to back them up. It can be frustrating if you’re simply trying to stay healthy. Do you spend three dollars on the expensive water bottle or just drink it…

Apple Co-founder Thinks Apple Is Now Too Big a Company To Come Up With the Next Big Thing

When it comes to the next great tech breakthroughs, Steve Wozniak isn’t betting on the company he founded. Instead, he believes Tesla is at the forefront of anticipating the world to come. From a report: Interviewed by Bloomberg on what are likely to be the biggest tech breakthroughs in the coming years, and which companies are likely to make them, Woz didn’t list Apple as a contender. He said, “look at the companies like Google and Facebook and Apple and Microsoft that changed the world — and Tesla included. They usually came from young people. They didn’t spring out of big businesses.” Small businesses, he argued, take bigger risks — and their founders create the products they really want, without the dilution that occurs with multiple decision-makers. “I think Tesla is on the best direction right now. They’ve put an awful lot of effort into very risky things. I’m going to bet on Tesla,” he added.

Turn Toothbrush Time Into Story Time

I hate going more than ten seconds with nothing but my own thoughts to entertain me. When I walk three blocks, I listen to a podcast. I read Twitter while I pee. What I hate the most is brushing and flossing. I can’t hold my phone, I can’t talk, I can’t admire myself in the mirror because I’m foaming at the mouth. I…

The battleship, the drone, and the chocolate chip cookies

RPV away, off the stern of the USS Iowa in 1987. (credit: US Navy photo)

Today is Memorial Day in the US, and we wanted to recognize the Ars readers and staff who’ve served by resurfacing another military memory from our resident Navy man, Sean Gallagher. Sean served aboard the USS Iowa, and here he recalls how he contributed to drone warfare with chocolate chip cookies (seriously). This piece originally ran in May 2015.

Two weeks ago, I made a pilgrimage to the Port of Los Angeles to visit the ship that played a central part in setting me on the path that put me where I am today—the battleship USS Iowa. And as I walked toward the Big Stick at its new home in San Pedro, a ship’s boat sitting on the pier alongside her triggered a recollection of one of the most memorable episodes in my tour aboard Iowa: a night in late September of 1987 when I left my somewhat minor mark on the history of drone warfare with a box of chocolate chip cookies.

I was an ensign aboard the USS Iowa, which was taking part in a joint military exercise with the Turkish military called Display Determination ’87, a rehearsal for a reinforcement of Turkish forces by US Army, Navy, and Marine units in the event of a Soviet invasion. From off the Turkish coast in Saros Bay, the Iowa was to provide shore bombardment in advance of a Marine amphibious landing. But the helicopter we had used to put our Marine forward observer in the air the day before was “tits-up,” as they say, and we needed eyes in the sky for the final bombardment.

Mystery of the Flickering Red Lights in the White House Grips the Internet

Internet-fueled conspiracy theories have plagued US politics over the last year and made voters on both sides of the aisle appear to be reactionary maniacs. But conspiracy theories can also be fun. And the entirely benign saga of red lights flashing in the windows of the second-floor residence of the White House is…

UK Tech Visas Quadruple After Applications Soar

James Timcomb, writing for The Telegraph: Technology industry demands for special measures to let companies hire foreign workers after Brexit have been boosted by a surge in demand for technology visas. Tech City UK, the government organisation that processes applications for the dedicated “Tier 1 Exceptional Talent” visa, said successful applications had more than quadrupled in the last 12 months, with 260 endorsed in the last fiscal year. It follows fears in the British tech community that access to skilled computer coders would be hit by restrictions to freedom of movement when the UK leaves the EU. David Cameron introduced the tech visa scheme in 2014 in a bid to make London the technology capital of Europe and rival Silicon Valley as a destination for start-ups, and amid fears of a shortage of skilled coders in the UK. The “Tech Nation” visa scheme allows Tech City UK to endorse applications from non-EU workers, and lets successful applicants stay in the country for five years, after which they can apply to settle. Just a handful of visas were granted in its first few months, due to what were seen as onerous requirements, and the rules were relaxed in 2015. Applications have soared since then, and rose again after the Brexit vote.

Intel Has a Competitor for the AMD ThreadRipper [Rumor]

Intel is not a company to be outdone by a competitor. They have pride in their product lineup even though it did seem a tad stale the last few iterations. If this Intel Core i9-7980XE 18C/36T rumor is true, it seems that they have an AMD ThreadRipper competitor waiting in the wings! A little birdie has leaked a X299 product lineup to VideoCardz. Remember that this is a rumor so take it with a grain of salt as usual. Having true competition in the CPU space sure is fun again!

AMD’s Threadripper will face more powerful competition that we first thought. A 18-core processor called Core i9-7980XE will be Intel’s flagship model of Core-X series.
