Intel's Unveils 7th Gen Intel Core Processor

Intel has unveiled its 7th generation Intel Core family of processors today. The company is launching three Kaby Lake-Y parts on the 14nm+ process technology for high-end tablets, notebooks and 2-in-1 devices. With desktop CPUs coming in January, the focus today is on the new mobile processors that, according to Intel, deliver “richer experiences, incredible performance and responsiveness, and true ultra HD 4K.”

7th Generation Intel Core is the newest family of processors for 2 in 1s and laptops. 7th Gen Intel Core extends the benefits of Intel’s industry leading 14nm process technology, delivering even more performance. It also introduces a new media engine that opens up a new world of premium 4K UHD content – for viewing, streaming, creating and sharing. The result is new PCs that have incredible performance and responsiveness, richer visuals with better integrated graphics, more refined and expanded user experiences, longer battery life, and the ability to take full advantage of the immersive internet.

Pegatron Exploiting Apple iPhone Workers In China

It’s that time of year again where we all act like we care that Apple works people to death for pennies but, as long as we get a new iPhone, we totally ignore that people are working 80 hours of overtime per week making those shiny iDevices. That’s 80 hours of overtime per week, not an 80 hour week.

Media coverage led to pay rises and improved working conditions at Foxconn. Apple responded by moving some manufacturing to Pegatron, which offered Apple lower prices based on lower wages. It’s not as though Apple really needs to screw its Chinese workers, since the company has more than $200 billion in cash. According to China Labor Watch, in 2105, Apple made twice as much profit in China ($13.4 billion) as it paid its 1.6 million Chinese workers ($6.2 billion).

Intel unveils Kaby Lake, its first post-“tick-tock” CPU architecture

Intel’s tick-tock model may be dead, but the PC industry still demands new hardware every year. Many PC models are refreshed once a year or so, and that means that the PC makers need new stuff to put into those computers whether or not the laws of physics want to comply.

Enter “Kaby Lake,” the first of Intel’s post-tick-tock processor architectures. Kaby (rhymes with baby, named for a lake in Canada) first appeared on Intel’s public roadmaps in mid-2015 when the company realized that Cannonlake and its attendant 10nm manufacturing process wouldn’t be ready in time. No major architecture has changed, and Intel is still using a tweaked version of its 14nm manufacturing process, so most changes are relatively minor and built to serve a particular market niche.

Ivy Bridge (2012) 22nm Third-generation Core i3/i5/i7 Tick
Haswell (2013) 22nm Fourth-generation Core i3/i5/i7 Tock
Broadwell (2014-15) 14nm Fifth-generation Core i3/i5/i7, Core M Tick/”Process
Skylake (2015-16) 14nm Sixth-generation Core i3/i5/i7, Core m3/m5/m7 Tock/”Architecture”
Kaby Lake (2016-17) “14nm+” Seventh-generation Core i3/i5/i7, Core m3 “Optimization”
Cannonlake (2017?) 10nm TBA “Process”

As usual, Intel is releasing the Kaby Lake processors in waves. Today, we’re getting dual-core low-voltage processors, the kind you’d find in thin-and-light consumer laptops. The first Kaby systems are slated to ship in September, and you’ll see lots of new laptops at IFA next week. Desktop CPUs and other higher-performance chips, including those with Intel Iris GPUs, will be announced in January around CES.

Intel's New Kaby Lake Processors: What You Need to Know

Kaby Lake, Intel’s latest processor family, wasn’t supposed to exist. Earlier this year Intel announced the end of its well-known tick-tock release schedule, whereby it trots out a new processor every September. The tick is the shrinking and improvements of the current microarchitecture, while the tock is a whole new architecture. Instead last year’s “tock,” Skylake, was going to hang around a while, with no new “tick” in sight.

Intel Announces 7th Gen Kaby Lake: 14nm PLUS, Six Notebook SKUs, Desktop coming in January

When Intel first announced the shift from the dual-stage ‘Tick-Tock’ methodology that had driven their core CPU design teams for over a decade into the three-way ‘Process, Architecture, Optimization’ paradigm, there were questions as to how much of the final stage, the Optimization, would actually change the way CPUs were presented or offer upgrades in performance. At the time, ‘Kaby Lake’ as the name for Intel’s third crack at their 14nm process was well known, but users wondered if it was just another Devil’s Canyon (better overclocking) or a full on CPU launch. Well the answer is the latter, and the launch is staggered between today and January. Roll on Kaby Lake. Is that Kah-bee Lake, or Kay-bee Lake?

GCN 1.0 / Southern Islands On AMDGPU Takes Another Step Forward

Many Phoronix readers appear excited about the forthcoming GCN 1.0 “Southern Islands” support for the AMDGPU DRM driver as an alternative to the Radeon DRM. With the newer AMDGPU DRM support will eventually mean Vulkan and AMDGPU-PRO support for these original Radeon HD 7000 series GPUs. This GCN 1.0 / SI support has taken another step forward with now having “workable” dynamic power management…
