Homeowners Guide To Replacement Windows

interior bay window overlooking forest

There is no doubt that windows complement a room. They make the overall impression of your home and that’s why it’s important to make an informed choice. The following tips will help while choosing replacement windows.

Window Styles and Choices

Now that you have the opportunity to replace your windows, get creative. You have a wide variety of designs at your disposal. Choose what will complement and fit your taste. The window you finally decide on should offer the kind of ventilation and lighting that you want. For example, tinted and small windows will allow a limited amount of lighting and ventilation. On the other hand, for more light and ventilation, large windows are appropriate.

Understanding Your Home’s Style and Window Requirements?

Why are you replacing your windows? Is it because the windows cracked or they seem not to be in alignment? If so, then the foundation of your home needs to be checked before installing new windows.

Choosing Your Replacement Windows

Though your design will largely depend on your taste and the overall architecture of your home, you have no shortage of the choices you have. Some of the styles and types of replacement windows that Orange County’s Replacement Window Company  offer include:

Bay design

A bay window is the most appealing window design and it’s also a favorite. Apart from them creating an added space in a room, they offer amazing views. Picture having cushions laid out next to a bay window and sitting comfortably on them while watching the sun set with a cup of your favorite drink.

Casement Design

You may want a window up high on the wall and it may not be easy to reach, a casement window will certainly be perfect for such a place. It’s similar to how doors open and best for adequate ventilation. Most people prefer installing them in kitchens.

Single Hung & Double Hung Windows

Picture Windows
Sliders
Bow Windows
Patio Doors
Garden Windows

Window Frame

Finally you have the design you prefer and now it’s time to choose a suitable frame. Different frames have varying qualities. For example wood is appealing but is taxing on the upkeep. If looking for frames that last for a maximum of fifteen years, aluminum is a good choice. The frame that has the least upkeep and has a higher lifespan is vinyl.

Window Glass

While choosing the glass for your windows, remember the higher the quality, the higher the energy efficiency. These high-quality glasses have a dual and triple variety. The spaces between these panes are filled with gases such as krypton which are effective in thermal output.

Best Window Replacement Brands

Finally, you have your foundation checked, the right style and design, kind of glass and frame to be used, now look for a brand that will give you quality within your budget. Check out the companies’ reviews online and call them too if you have any queries not answered on their website. Then look for a window replacement company and find out if they offer the services you are looking for. Also find out if they offer any warranties.

Finding the right replacement windows will enhance the aesthetic value of your home as well as increase its monetary value.

Tips for Hiring a Top-Notch House Painter

a man painting a house white

Whether you are building a new home or remodeling your house, the painting job should complement the structural work. Here are some of the best traits painters should have in order to have outstanding results.

House Painting Contractor Schedule

The house painter should arrive on the agreed time and if running late, then, it’s courteous to call and inform the client. The time lost for the lateness will have an effect on the duration the paint job was supposed to end, so the painter should work fast but efficiently to cover this time.

Meticulous Attention to Detail

It’s not easy to cover up for a painting job gone horribly wrong. The painter makes sure they have painted enough layers, to bring out the rich color of the paint. Ensure the paint lines are straight and focus on the details such as door frames and wardrobe side walls. Being meticulous calls for patience and consistency. The painter should be satisfied for a job well done.

Painter Reputation

New Jersey’s house painters have excellent reviews which you can easily get from their previous customers. These reviews can easily be accessed through the company’s website. Ask for references and call them. Get as much information of the painter’s past works, if you can get the photos, the better.

Resourceful

At times, painters can encounter challenges on the job. They can call their supervisor for any help needed or be able to provide a way forward. The growth in the painting industry calls for painters to regularly update themselves with the new equipment and paint, hence be able to lay out the various options but leave the final decision to the client.

Plan Your Painting Project

Though well skilled in the job, a painter should have a listening ear for the client. Furthermore, it’s their premises being painted so they have the final word.

Guidance

Not all painters have the technique and capability to do well on every job. The painter should be sincere enough to inform the client whether they have the technique and equipment to do the job. If not, they can guide the client where to get a professional painter capable of taking on the job.

Trustworthy

Having somebody into your home gives them access to your property and family. Get a painter that can be trusted and has no past criminal records. The references should be able to tell what kind of person you are hiring.

Reliable

Challenges may arise and the painting schedule is disrupted. The painter is required to inform the client of any issues they have encountered, how they have or are going to solve and if there is more paint or equipment needed. If the painting will take longer than the schedule, the painting company should inform the client if the extra time will result in added expenses.

Perform a Final Review with the House Painters

If the paint lines are crooked, there are uneven patches, the painter should accept and make the necessary changes. A painter can check out the various techniques of his colleagues who are better than him and enhance his skills.

Hire a house painting contractor who can deliver on time, is resourceful, a good listener, trustworthy, and has a commendable reputation. You will certainly enjoy their services.

BlackBerry Positioned For The Future Held Back By A Name

BlackBerry Classic Phone

This week was BlackBerry’s General Stockholder Meeting and John Chen, the firm’s CEO, took us through how the company was doing.  From a financial standpoint, while it did take a 16% revenue hit in revenue due to the pandemic, the firm was able to cut costs enough to show incredible growth (38%) in Earnings Per Share and decent growth (12%) in Earnings Before Income Taxes Depreciation and Amortization particularly in a Pandemic Fiscal Year.  It is currently enjoying being well represented in the automotive market (195M cars running QNX), with IVY named a leader in both Automotive and Smart City segments by independent analysts, and their security solutions have penetrated 18 of the G20 countries (I’m guessing China and Russia are the two not using the solution).

The company’s stock has been volatile because, and this is not BlackBerry’s fault, it has become a meme stock like GameStop and bouncing between the mid-teens to the high $20s in share price, which is probably not making the investors happy, particularly the Hedge Funds which tend to lose out when this happens.

But there was an interesting question during the event on whether BlackBerry should return its name to Research In Motion, and I think the firm should consider that move.

Naming

I have a saying that when it comes to naming, “the only thing everyone agrees on is that the person that came up with the final name is an idiot.” But, in this case, Research In Motion was the original name for BlackBerry. Before Chen took over, a prior leader made the colossal mistake of naming the company after its primary product at the time.  This move would be like Apple renaming itself iPod, which would have ended badly once Apple shifted to the iPhone.

A typical rule of thumb is you never name a company after a product, even if it’s the only product, because products have a life cycle, and companies are supposed to be immortal. Now, no longer really in the Smartphone business, but selling solutions for cars, cities, manufacturing plants, governments, and power stations, the name BlackBerry still reminds potential buyers of the failed phone lines. It doesn’t work at all to position the company well in the markets it is now attacking.

Now, I expect the renaming of Research In Motion as part of an even bigger mistake that this prior administration made to chase Apple.  BlackBerry is another fruit, and, were you to create another Apple, this might be a logical way to start.  But Apple wasn’t an ideal name for a Consumer Product company that had nothing to do with fruit. It was created when the company built the hoppiest computers and wanted a cheap name that no one could own.  Even so, Apple Records was not amused, forcing them to promise to never go into music (which would have been a problem had not Apple Records exited the Music Industry).

In addition, many of the markets BlackBerry is attempting to penetrate once were heavy BlackBerry phone users and still recall the pain of having to switch to something less secure when BlackBerry largely exited the market.  This memory creates the impression you can’t trust BlackBerry to sustain a market, making it seem riskier to trust the company.  If the firm exited a product that the firm was named after, how likely will it exit a product and market not tied to its name?

I still get comments when referring to BlackBerry that implies many potential buyers think BlackBerry went under years ago because the phones are gone.  A surprisingly large number of top executives that had to abandon their secure BlackBerry phones for something else are still pissed about that, and the name must remind them that they were abandoned before.

As a result, I think the name is a far more significant impediment to sales than the firm realizes, while Research In Motion doesn’t have the negative stigma of BlackBerry closer to what BlackBerry does today than the name BlackBerry is without the phones.  Another viable option would be to rename the company Cylance, the less known (than BlackBerry) security company BlackBerry acquired.  Cylance could also better encompass what the firm does without the BlackBerry baggage.

Wrapping Up:

BlackBerry is doing well, likely because the demand for advanced AI solutions to malware increases dramatically, as is the need for a secure platform for intelligent implementations.  But one of the significant impediments is the firm’s history of abandoning its earlier primary offering and leaving many people in the lurch as a result.  The BlackBerry name reminds people of their abandonment and causes them to recall the company as it was, not as it is.  To change that problem would require a massive image marketing program, which BlackBerry seems unwilling to fund, or an extended time measured in decades so that people forget what the firm used to do and only associate its current offerings with the brand.  Even so, being named after the fruit hasn’t helped Apple with enterprise accounts and certainly isn’t doing wonders for BlackBerry either.  Even with Apple’s massive marketing budget, their one truly enterprise product, the Apple Server, failed catastrophically in the market.

As a result, for BlackBerry to reach its full potential, the promise of which was showcased in these decent financial results, it may need to go back to being named Research In Motion, its last name, ironically, to get away from its past.  Or use Cylance with the same result.

Antivirus software tycoon John McAfee apparently hanged himself in a Spanish jail cell on Wednesday.

The 75-year-old eccentric tech entrepreneur was arrested in October and was awaiting extradition in the Barcelona jail when he was found dead by hanging, police sources told El Pais.

The Spanish High Court had agreed to extradite McAfee, who had been charged with a number of federal financial crimes in two districts in the United States.

McAfee was hit with a 10-count indictment in the Western District of Tennessee in October for allegedly evading taxes on millions of dollars in income.

Lego aims to sell bricks from recycled bottles

multicolored lego bricks

Lego makes about 3,500 different bricks and shapes but faces the challenge of coming up with a sustainable product that can last years – decades – even decades.

The goal is to find a product good enough that people don’t notice the difference, said Lego’s Tim Brooks.

The next stage will be to add colors to the prototype bricks and test them with children and adult fans.

Lego said it would initially get soft drinks bottles from the US to make its new plastic toy parts. It said plastic recovered from the oceans would not be suitable as it is typically too degraded to be used in the toy parts, as it’s typically too hard to use in the world of soft drinks and other recycled material.

Desiree Perez Helps Lead the Way in Diversifying the Cannabis Industry

Desiree Perez

Roc Nation chief executive officer Desiree Perez is one of the leading voices in diversifying the burgeoning cannabis industry.

Perez is leading this work along with Roc Nation founder Jay-Z, one of the many rappers who are invested in cannabis companies. The moves come as cannabis and related substances are increasingly becoming normalized for recreational use as more states legalize marijuana.

For Perez and Jay-Z, the legitimacy of not only cannabis, but also the legal businesses that support it, is critical. It gives the two Roc Nation leaders a voice in addressing some of the racial inequities about the war on drugs and its toll on Black and BIPOC communities.

Desiree Perez and Jay-Z launched their own cannabis company, Monogram, in early 2021. Perez sits on the board of directors of Monogram’s parent company, The Parent Company, a California-based, vertically integrated cannabis business.

Perez and Social Justice Reform through Cannabis

Perez has led the creation of a social equity initiative at The Parent Company. The business has pledged $10 million, plus 2 percent of all future net income in a social equity fund.

The fund will be used to find future entrepreneurs of color and provide them with capital and mentorship for success in the cannabis industry. The goal is to build generational wealth and create a cannabis industry that is more diverse and equitable.

“We established this fund to help break down the systematic barriers that Black and other minority entrepreneurs face as they seek to secure meaningful participation, growth, and leadership in this multi-billion-dollar industry,” said Perez, who also serves as The Parent Company’s chief social equity officer, in a recent press release.

“Our vision (is) of a legal cannabis industry in which Black and minority entrepreneurs have the opportunity to build peak levels of success and value for their communities,” Perez said.

Racial disparity in the industry is significant. A 2017 survey by Marijuana Business Daily showed that the industry has only 5.7 percent Hispanic or Latino business owners and founders, 4.3 percent African-American and 2.4 percent Asian, compared to 81 percent white.

The new fund hopes to decisively address those disparities and right some past wrongs. Among the funds initiatives are:

  • A focus on BIPOC entrepreneurs who’ve been adversely affected by the nation’s drug wars
  • Investing and partnering with BIPOC-owned brands, cultivators, distributors, and wholesalers, essentially creating a BIPOC-driven cannabis supply chain
  • Contributions to nonprofit organizations that work in advocacy, criminal justice reform, entrepreneurship, and workforce development

Desiree Perez Believes in the Importance of Storytelling

Desiree Perez believes using cannabis to tell stories of injustice is becoming an effective way to address equity. It’s resonant in Monogram’s messaging. Take, for example, their video, Hypocrisy Stories. The black-and-white narrative features several voices talking about their own experiences that BIPOC faces with minor marijuana possession charges. It ends with the statement, “The hypocrisy of America’s drug policy needs to end.”

The disparities in criminal cases involving cannabis are stark. A 2020 report by the American Civil Liberties Union showed Black people are 3.6 times more likely to be arrested for pot possession than white people are. That rate comes even though usage rates are the same for Black and white people.

In 10 states, arrests of Black people are 5 times those of whites.

Despite increasing rates of legalization, arrest rates have actually increased in recent years, with about 100,000 more arrests in 2018 than in 2015.

Monogram is also advocating for cannabis reform throughout the country.

Desiree Perez and Jay-Z are not alone in using their influential voices to address social injustice. Rappers Method Man and Lil Wayne are involved in similar ventures related to cannabis and social justice.

About Desiree Perez

Desiree Perez was named CEO of Roc Nation, the multinational entertainment firm, in 2019. Previously, she served 12 years as the company’s chief operating officer.

In 2021, she was named a Billboard Change Agent in recognition of her work to fight racial justice. Billboard cited Perez’s leadership of the company’s philanthropic arm, which has supported legal teams involved in high-profile cases, including Breonna Taylor and George Floyd; partnered with the NFL to raise awareness; and collaborated with leading social justice organizations, including Feeding America and Gathering for Justice.

All four are mostly using shots made by two Chinese vaccine makers, Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech.

China kicked off its vaccine diplomacy campaign last year by pledging to provide a shot that would be safe and effective at preventing severe cases of COVID-19. However, the vaccines may not be very effective,  particularly on those new variants.

The degree of recovery may depend on which vaccines governments give to their people, experts say.

London-Based Hedge Fund that bet against GameStop closes after suffering losses

gamestop stocks smartphone computer

London-based White Square Capital suffered double-digit percentage losses in January from its investment in U.S. videogame retailer.

The hedge fund has now written to investors to warn that it will shut its main fund and return money back.

White Square, which was founded by Florian Kronawitter, a former trader at Paulson & Co, had managed up to $440 million in assets.

The term meme stock was coined after individual investors targeted companies on social media, which in some cases saw shares dramatically rise. This caused some hedge funds with short positions — where stock is sold first with the intention of it being bought back later in the hope a profit can be made from the price dropping — having to close their positions to prevent crippling losses.

But the fund is said to have recovered from much of the January losses, according to a newspaper report. The decision to shut the fund was said to be unrelated to the meme-stock rally but due to a review of its business model.

The fund is thought to be one of the first hedge funds to close its positions to stem its losses and has recovered from many of the sharp price movements.

China wants banks to stop supporting cryptocurrencies

brian-wangenheim-bitcoin in wires

China’s central bank summoned several major banks and payments companies to call on them to take tougher action over the trading of cryptocurrencies.

Banks were told to not provide products or services such as trading, clearing and settlement for cryptocurrency transactions.

China’s third-largest lender by assets, the Agricultural Bank of China, said it was following the PBOC’s guidance and would conduct due diligence on clients to root out illegal activities involving cryptocurrency mining and transactions.

The price of Bitcoin slumped by more than 10% on Monday but stabilized in Asian trading on Tuesday. That follows an order on Friday to shut down Bitcoin China’s biggest-ever Bitcoin mining operation in the province of Chenguan.

In China, the value of the cryptocurrency has dropped by about 50% since hitting a record high above $63,000 in April.

Factors truck businesses should consider before buying insurance

truck with clouds highway 395

Insurance is one of the many expenses truck businesses experience. The key to being successful in the logistics industry is to keep the expenses at a minimum. Even if buying insurance may seem like an extra cost, it helps businesses save money in the long run because it protects them in case of legal issues or accidents. It’s not advisable for truck companies to skimp on this expense because accidents can happen at any time.

If you’re managing a truck company and have to buy insurance, consider the following factors

Certification

Standard certification is an essential factor to bear in mind when buying any kind of insurance for your business. Industry-standard certifications are essential because they help you separate reliable providers from other companies offering policies. You can find information about the provider’s certification on their website, but you can also contact one of the representatives to ask for further details. Apart from certification, you should also check the ratings to determine if good financials back their policies because you want to ensure that the provider can pay the damage in case of an accident.

Settlement and claims

Filing a claim for an accident and recovering the amount you spend to fix the damaged vehicles or cover other expenses are two separate things. You can easily file a claim with the insurance company; however, the recovery process can take a while and require some effort on your part. Before buying insurance from a company, check how fast they solve claims.

Type of policy

Insurance companies offer numerous kinds of insurance for truck companies that vary according to the requirements of the buyer and the services the insurer is specialized in. It’s easy to find out what policies a company offers because they list them on their website, where one can compare their features and determine which one suits their interests.

Alongside the classic types of insurance, all businesses get, truck companies also need bobtail insurance. You can learn what is bobtail insurance online or through your insurance provider or agent.

Coverage

Read the policy to identify the general and specific coverage it provides and determine if there are possible exclusions from the terms and conditions. Read the paperwork before signing it because the devil is in the detail. You need to know what types of cargo, route options, and other similar aspects the insurance policy covers.

The condition of the fleet

The premium applicable for your insurance policy is determined by your fleet’s condition. Supposing you use expensive and luxurious trucks or vehicles, expect the premium to be high because it’s supposed to cover the expenses for the pricier property.

Customer support

Customer support is an essential factor to check when buying services like insurance. An efficient system can tackle your issues and manage your queries and claims quickly and efficiently. You want to collaborate with an insurance provider that can assist you at every step, from the day you purchase the policy until it expires.

Here are the most important factors you should consider when you buy insurance for a truck company.

Most Catholic bishops are in favor of denying Biden communion

More than 85% of bishops voted in favor of an in-depth conversation about how to preach the Catholic Church’s teaching on Communion.

The council, which includes more than 300 bishops, will consider issuing a statement on “the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the Church.”

The document could bar President Joe Biden from receiving Holy Communion if promulgated by the bishops. The bishops’ council will consider writing a statement about the meaning of Communion in the church’s life.

It will also consider a statement that could bar Vice President Biden from getting Communion from receiving the sacrament of the day. The majority of bishops are open to discussing writing a document that could have a negative effect on President Biden’s access to Communion.

The Catholic Church teaches that Communion is the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Receiving Communion while stained with serious sin, among which the church counts support for abortion, is considered one of the worst offenses against God.

A space tourism startup is close to sending humans to space

space traveler

Space Perspective successfully completed its first unmanned test flight Friday of a gigantic balloon that will soon take humans to orbit. The company launched a prototype of its stratospheric balloon 20 miles over Florida at 5:23am ET, putting it on schedule for the first commercial flight in 2024.

Its Neptune Once spaceship test vehicle took off from the Space Coast Air and Spaceport in Cape Canaveral and hit its planned altitude of 108,409 feet where it hovered for six hours before splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico.

Space Perspective is a new startup founded in 2020 by Jane Poynter and Taber McCallum, who previously co-founded World View – a firm that deploys sensors to the stratosphere attached to balloons to capture space imagery.

With this flight, Space Perspective became the first space launch operator to fly from the Spaceport, and put it on track for its first crewed test flight in 2023.

The first commercial test flight is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2023, with a commercial flight scheduled to begin in 2024.

Space Explorers will be able to explore the edge of space in the next five years.

Space tourism sounds fun. But it could be terrible for the planet.

Space travel has environmental costs. For research, it might be worth it. To send Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, and other wealthy tourists into orbit? That’s debatable. Companies including SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Space Adventures want to make space tourism more common. And people are interested. Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa spent an undisclosed sum of money to SpaceX in 2018 for a private trip around the moon and back. The trip is penciled in for 2023, although the Starship rocket sti

Miami’s mayor entices Chinese bitcoin miners with cheap and clean nuclear energy

bitcoin toppled over on a gold plate

Mayor Francis Suarez says Miami’s doors are open to bitcoin miners in China who are scrambling to find a new home after Beijing made it clear that their days are numbered.

More than half of all miners are currently based in China, but a mass exodus is already underway.

The mayor is looking to promote the city’s essentially unlimited supply of cheap nuclear energy. Suarez is already in talks with Florida Power & Light Company to figure out how to further drive down the price of energy. He is also considering a mix of other incentives, like enterprise zones specifically for crypto mining, with the hope that these breaks will encourage investment and create jobs.

Miami is not alone in its ambitions to capture the attention of bitcoin miners, thanks to their cheap energy mix and crypto-friendly U.S. states and other hot mining destinations like Texas and Wyoming are also fast becoming hot mining hotspots in the U.K. and Wyoming. But even Suarez admits that a lot needs to be done first and that it needs to happen before the city is ready to meet the needs of miners in North America, he said.

IDF hits targets on Hamas sites after 3rd day of fires sparked by incendiary balloons

Flying Into the Battle Clouds

Israel launches airstrikes on Hamas in response to arson attacks from the Gaza Strip. At least eight fires were sparked in southern Israel on Thursday, four on Wednesday, and more than two dozen on Tuesday.

The IDF said the targets included a launchpad near Khan Younis, which could be seen in video footage shared on social media.

There were no immediate reports of Palestinian casualties from the Israeli raids, the military said.

The attacks were far greater and more forceful than those launched earlier this week in retaliation to similar airborne arson attacks, the IDF said. The attacks appeared to be the most significant retaliation by Israel to incendiary balloons in the three years since Palestinians began using the tactic in the Gaza region, the Israeli Fire and Rescue Services said. Inflatable balloons have been launched from the Strip.

The Israeli military also released its own video footage of the strikes.

SpaceX successfully launched an advanced GPS satellite for the U.S. Space Force on Thursday (June 17). This marks the 19th launch of the year here on the Space Coast. The GPS III SV05 satellite mission is the second to launch so far this month for SpaceX, following the launch of a broadband satellite for Sirius XM on June 6.

Three previous advanced GPS III missions also launched on Falcon 9 rockets, including two missions last year. Another of the satellites will be launched in August 2019 on the United Launch Alliance’s final flight of the Delta IV Medium rocket, which will launch on the Delta III Medium rocket in August.

The mission is SpaceX’s fourth GPS satellite delivery by SpaceX for the military. The launch is scheduled to take place at 12:09 p.m. EST (1409 GMT) on June 17 ET (1449 GMT).

Internet outage hits major banks and airlines.

simple switchboard connections

Australian and U.S. banks and airlines suffer brief online outages Thursday.

Several banks blamed an “external provider” for the disruption . Outages began around 2:10PM Sydney time (0510 GMT) and did not appear to be limited to the banking sector. Problems appeared to be more prolonged in Australia, with services only slowly returning an hour after the first reports were made.

Earlier this month major US media and government websites were temporarily down after a glitch with cloud computing services provider Fastly. The White House, New York Times, Reddit and Amazon were some of the more prominent victims of the glitch earlier this month.

After a series of high profile hack-for-ransom attacks corporations are left jittery over cybersecurity risks, although there is no indication the latest problems were caused by malicious actors.

The issue of cybersecurity was at the top of the agenda when US President Joe Biden and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Geneva this week. The issue was discussed in Geneva. The U.K. Government and Washington believe hackers who have extorted hundreds of millions of dollars from Western governments, companies, and organizations operate from Russian soil.
