The End for Sega Video Game Arcades

Akihabara News (Tokyo) — The announcement earlier this month that Sega Sammy Holdings had decided to sell most of its subsidiary Sega Entertainment to Genda Inc. signified the end of an era, and it is likely to significantly reshape the face of the Akihabara district of Tokyo.

Although this issue was not specifically addressed in the companies’ statements, it’s reasonable to assume that Genda Inc., which will hold an 85.1% stake in Sega Entertainment by the end of the year, will rebrand the nearly two hundred amusement facilities it has obtained under the deal from the iconic bright red Sega style that currently exist into video game and entertainment facilities with their own Genda logos.

Sega Sammy explained that its motivation for letting go of its arcades was very much a financial matter, commenting, “As the amusement center operations area in the entertainment contents business is strongly affected by Covid-19, utilization of facilities has declined remarkably, and a significant loss was recorded [in the April to June financial period]. In addition, despite the recent recovery trend, the situation remains uncertain.”

Although gross sales at the Sega Entertainment arcades have actually risen somewhat in recent years, profits had begun to sink into losses even before the impact of the pandemic. In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the segment had recorded a profit of ¥804 million (US$7.8 million), but in the fiscal year that closed this March, it recorded ¥915 million (US$8.9 million) in losses.

Moreover, it may be that the main attention of the Sega Sammy group as a whole has decisively shifted away from video game arcades (not expected to be a high-growth industry) and toward its resorts and casino businesses, which company leaders have repeatedly stated is their direction of the future.

That’s very much not the case with the much smaller Genda, hitherto an arcade game rental firm, which appears to be quite enthusiastic about making its big move into Japan’s video arcade industry.

In their own statement on the deal, Genda explained, “Sega Entertainment operates 199 entertainment facilities (including 193 amusement facilities) nationwide with the mission of creating smiles and positive feeling through its ‘places for fun’… We will revitalize the industry and create an amusement industry where everyone is involved, including manufacturers, operators, and end users, and aim to create ‘even more fun.’

Osaka Reaches for the Skies

Akihabara News (Tokyo) — Osaka Prefecture has launched a new organization with the objective of establishing commercial flying car services by 2023.

Launched in an event held on the 17th, the new group goes by an unwieldy name that might be translated as Osaka Roundtable on a Moving Revolution Society in the Sky, and includes as its inaugural members the Osaka Prefectural Government and 41 private companies and organizations.

Featured as the keynote speaker, Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura declared, “I remember being excited to see a flying car in science fiction movies when I was a child. Let’s realize this project in Osaka united in our public and private sectors.”

The event afterwards went on to feature lectures by businessmen and academics on the current development and remaining challenges facing the emerging commercial air taxi industry. These included the need to secure appropriate takeoff and landing sites and the development of a proper legal and regulatory framework.

Osaka hopes to feature air taxi exhibitions for the 2025 World Expo, which is one of the reasons that this prefecture is taking the lead.

More broadly, the Japanese government has had its eye on the flying taxi market since at least August 2018 when the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) jointly launched the Public-Private Conference for Future Air Mobility.

The Osaka initiative is building upon that platform and aims to fill out some of the necessary details that will lead to implementation.

Roboship Explores Future of Marine Vessels

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding (Tokyo) — Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group, is participating in an inter-business project to explore the potential of the Roboship as the marine vessel of the future.

A proof of concept test using two actual surface vessels was jointly conducted on November 11, 2020. This test, to be held in the sea off Toyosu in Tokyo using a passenger vessel owned by Tokyo Cruise Ship Co., intended to demonstrate the cutting-edge technologies and ideas of the participating companies, with the aim of supporting the development and widespread adoption of a navigational support system for coastal vessels.

The testing is part of the “Roboship Joint Value Creation Project” led by e5 Lab Inc., a firm jointly established in 2019 by four companies representing shipping companies and a trading company to develop EV (electric vehicle) ships and digitization technologies. The project is a collaborative effort between e5 Lab, 22 companies, and a ship classification society, including firms outside the shipbuilding and marine transport field, as a cooperative platform to create value and turn challenges into opportunities by addressing issues facing the ocean shipping industry.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, with assistance from related sections within MHI Group, has provided maritime-related engineering services, support for marine vessel remote control/autonomous navigation, and system integration for the vessel propulsion units. As part of the test, a navigation support system called Superbridge-X, with functions including route planning, course control, vessel speed control, and collision avoidance, has been installed in Urban Launch, a passenger vessel operated by Tokyo Cruise Ship Co., Ltd. to conduct cruises in Tokyo Bay and other areas. In addition, a remotely operated unmanned surface vessel developed by MHI has also been made available, and the two vessels used to demonstrate collision avoidance.

In its Marine Future Stream growth strategy, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has set goals for the decarbonization of the maritime economy through renewable energy and the carbon recycle, and effective utilization of the marine space with digitalization and electrification, aiming to generate new ideas through marine-related innovation, and making them a reality. Meanwhile, e5 Lab is a solution provider working to solve issues in the maritime industry through development of EV ships and digitization, in order to promote safe navigation for vessels, a better work environment for crews, and conservation of the global environment. While sharing concepts for activities in a full-fledged effort to find solutions to the social challenges facing the marine transport and maritime industry, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will pursue cooperation through the joint value creation project.

NEC Emotion Analysis for Video Comms

NEC (Tokyo) — NEC Corporation and Realeyes OÜ have jointly developed a new emotion analysis service that combines NEC’s biometric identification and video analytics technologies with Realeyes’ emotion analysis technology. This is part of a collaboration announced in July 2020, and NEC will launch this service in January 2021. NEC aims to capture top share of the global emotion analysis service market, which is estimated to be worth ¥360 billion (US$3.4 billion).

Due to the impact of Covid-19, video communications have become more common in our daily lives. However, there are many challenges to non-face-to-face communications, such as understanding the intent of other parties and fully grasping their reactions. As a result, user stress is becoming a more important issue.

The new service works in coordination with video communication tools on PCs and smartphones to analyze user emotions from their facial expressions, only with their full consent and due consideration for privacy.

Realeyes’ emotion analysis technology, which has been deployed for more than 180 customers worldwide, analyzes user interest and attention based on video communication. Results become available on an Analysis Dashboard almost instantly, and users can review and share results as needed.

This makes it possible to immediately grasp and detect areas of uncertainty in communication, even if participants are not meeting each other directly. Even in real-time interactions, the technology signals communication problem areas and opportunities to improve. By reviewing the Analysis Dashboard, the organizer can improve the organization and facilitation of the meeting, and participants can reflect on their own experiences.

NEC and Realeyes conducted technical verification of this service in August and September of this year, demonstrating the analysis of emotions for participants in web conferences. The capability to analyze the emotions of meeting participants in web conferences and understand their emotional changes has proven to be useful for organizers to reflect on their own progress.

More effective online communications, especially during a global pandemic, improve society’s ability to do business, socialize and live better lives.

Use Cases

Company Meetings and Training Sessions: The degree of attention and experiences of those who join online meetings can be shared by both organizers and participants to improve engagement and efficient comprehension. After a meeting, organizers can review participant responses for each session and determine strategies for improvement. Meanwhile, participants can reflect on their own responses in order to improve their own efforts to focus, comprehend and tackle business tasks.

Online Education: Communication and learning challenges are shared by both teachers and students. Reporting and trends related to attention and satisfaction can reveal opportunities to reduce confusion and deliver more engaging educational experiences. Teachers can review student responses and improve instructional content. Conversely, students can review their own responses to deepen their own learning and achieve higher scores and standards.

NEC and Realeyes anticipate the service will be used in applications such as online meetings, training, education, customer support and sales activities, events, and other situations where mutual communication is important.

Japanese Language Lessons Go Online

Akihabara News (Tokyo) — The Intercultural Institute of Japan, a short stroll from JR Akihabara Station, has launched an online program for basic Japanese language lessons.

The Covid-19 pandemic had impacted the entire globe, cutting off most international travel opportunities and often isolating people within their own homes. Businesses in a range of industries have been scrambling to adapt to the new realities and the new lifestyles.

Fortunately, however, innovative companies are now stepping forward to meet social needs and, among Japanese language schools, the Intercultural Institute of Japan, already known among international students as one of the most enjoyable and effective places to gain a basic grasp of the language, is now offering flexible programs of online instruction.

The new program is called Chikamichi Online Japanese, which the company explains refers to a chikamichi (shortcut) both to a study abroad experience and to the students’ dreams of walking the road toward mastery of the Japanese language.

Those who are interested in learning more about the program are advised to send an email to incul@incul.com

Toyota-Honda Tie Up on Mobile Power Generation

Honda (Tokyo) — Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda R&D Co. will create a mobile power generation/output system, Moving e, that consists of a fuel cell bus that can carry a large amount of hydrogen, portable external power output devices and portable batteries, and will begin demonstration testing of the system’s ability to deliver electricity anytime and anywhere.

When a power grid is damaged during a disaster such as typhoons and rainstorms, people suffer from an interruption in the supply of power to their homes and evacuation centers. To address this issue, Toyota and Honda will bring technologies together to create a mobile power generation/output system and conduct demonstration testing of delivering electricity to people.

Taking advantage of its mobility, the Moving e can be utilized as a “phase-free” system which can be used in times of a disaster to support disaster response by supplying electricity in an affected area, as well as in normal times for routine uses such as supplying power at an event. Through this demonstration testing, the two companies will confirm the actual needs of people and verify usability of the system.

The Moving e mobile power generation/output system will consist of:

●Toyota’s Charging Station fuel cell bus
●Honda’s Power Exporter 9000 portable external power output device
●Two types of Honda’s portable batteries: LiB-AID E500 and Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP)
●Honda Mobile Power Pack Charge & Supply Concept charger/discharger for MPP

Harry Potter Theme Park Opening in Tokyo

Itochu Corporation (Tokyo) — Warner Bros. Studio Tours, operator of “The Making of Harry Potter” in London; Warner Bros. Japan; Seibu Railway Co., Ltd.; Itochu Corporation; and Fuyo General Lease Co., Ltd. announced today that the parties have executed an agreement with regard to the development of “Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo: The Making of Harry Potter” on a part of the current Toshimaen Amusement Park grounds located in Nerima-ku, Tokyo.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to develop a public park on a plot which includes the current grounds of Toshimaen Amusement Park which is scheduled to close at the end of August this year. The development will be conducted in a phased manner. The Studio Tour Tokyo facilities will be developed in conjunction with the development of this park. The involved parties will continue to work in cooperation with Tokyoʼs park plans in furthering the development of the Studio Tour Tokyo facilities.

Lined with carefully maintained trees and surrounded by lush greenery, the area has a long history of being loved by many. Added to that, the easy access from the center of Tokyo makes the area an attractive location, the ideal setting for the Tour. The partners will create facilities suitable for this to become a popular new destination.

The Studio Tour Tokyo will be the second facility of its kind in the world, after London, and will offer a new type of experiential entertainment in Japan. Building on the success of the Harry Potter experience in London which has claimed unparalleled popularity and recognition, the indoor attraction will take visitors on a fascinating behind the scenes tour of the Wizarding World series.

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the release of the first “Harry Potter” film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has now been passed on to the Fantastic Beasts series, making the franchise an enduring and much loved one by multiple generations, as adults who grew up with Harry Potter now take their own families to the theaters.

The Studio Tour Tokyo will offer special features to enable visitors to deepen their understanding of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts worlds. Visitors can explore the iconic movie sets that were actually designed and built by the creators of the Harry Potter series. Showcasing original costumes and props, the indoor attraction invites visitors to experience scenes from the films firsthand and discover how the world’s favorite book series was brought to life on the screen.

The facility covers an area of about 30,000 square meters, and the exhibition space within the “sound stage” and “backlot” (outdoor filming area) zones will take approximately half a day to walk through.

Tickets allocation for the Studio Tour Tokyo will be controlled in a manner that allows the optimal number of people to be in the facility at any one time to ensure the best possible experience.

The open space just outside the Studio Tour Tokyoʼs entrance will be a landscaped area placing bespoke sculptures of mystical characters from the films, which will be accessible to the local residents and visitors alike.

The parties plan to work in cooperation with each other to proceed with the construction of the Studio Tokyo Tour, which is set to open in the first half of 2023.

Warner Bros. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ann Sarnoff: “We are delighted to be working with Seibu Railway Co. Ltd, Itochu Corporation, and Fuyo Group to bring this world-class attraction to Japan. Warner Bros. has been telling stories for almost 100 years, and Harry Potter is among our most popular and beloved. The Studio Tour Tokyo will continue this tradition while offering fans of all ages a unique way to get closer to the films and truly immerse themselves in the Wizarding World. As an established tourist destination with beautiful green spaces, Toshimaen is the perfect environment for this attraction. It is also important to us that the local community is involved in the development process, and we are looking forward to creating something very special.

Takashi Goto, President and Representative Director of Seibu Holdings Inc., Chairman of Seibu Railway Co., Ltd.: “We are really pleased to reach the agreement with Warner Bros. Japan LLC, Itochu Corporation, and Fuyo Group, introducing Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter, second only to the London, in the site of former Toshimaen Amusement Park.
Due to the grand open in the first half of 2023, we will proceed the construction of Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo, cooperating with related parties. We are also considering various sales promotions including renewal of Toshimaen Station, by the cooperation between Warner Bros. Japan LLC and Seibu group companies such as Seibu Railway, in order to revitalize the areas along Seibu line, by which we try to offer added value to the local community.”

Itochu Corporation, Member of the Board Executive Vice President Tomofumi Yoshida: “Regarding Warner Brothersʼ proposal for making inroads into Japan through a studio tour, Itochu considered Toshimaen to be a suitable location surrounded by forest and close to central Tokyo, and made adjustments in cooperation with Seibu Railway and Warner Brothers. Subsequently, Fuyo General Lease Co., Ltd. joined the team and all related parties were able to start the realization of the studio tour at Toshimaen. Itochu will play a role in the development of buildings and intends to make every effort for the completion of a fantastic studio tour with the related parties.”

Fuyo General Lease Co., Ltd. President & CEO Yasunori Tsujita: “Fuyo General Lease sincerely welcome the Studio Tour to Japan and are very pleased to be a part of this project. We shall contribute to this project by providing Warner Bros. Japan with a long term lease of the Studio Tour facilities. While we have leased many pieces of our real estate to various customers, this is the first time the company will be contributing to this type of business. We strongly believe that our partnership with all parties involved will become an invaluable asset for us.”
