Smart Robots Does All the Work at Nissan’s ‘Intelligent’ Factory

There are hardly any human workers at Nissan’s “intelligent” plant. Reason is that the robots does all the work, from welding and mounting to paint jobs. 

The workers at the factory can focus on more skilled work such as analyzing data collected by the robots, and on maintaining the equipment.

The factory, on the outskirts of Tokyo, is set to be up and running sometime before April, according to Nissan.

Its assembly line is designed so that all three types of models — electric; e-Power, which has both a motor and an engine, and those powered by regular combustion engine — can be built on the same line.

Each vehicle is equipped with the right powertrain as it moves along the line.

The innovations being tested in Tochigi will be gradually rolled out at its other global plants, including French alliance partner Renault’s factories.  The innovation eliminates the need for rare earth materials, cutting costs.

Tesla Moves to Texas: Forgetting Who your Customers Are

Tesla announced they are moving to Texas, and Austin has become a decent competitive alternative to California with a critical mass of technical folks and lower taxes.  However, Texas is also an extremely conservative state, joined at the hip to the petrochemical industry, and not a fan of electric cars.  More importantly, the state has recently passed a series of laws that appear to significantly aggravate the U.S. liberal population that outbuy conservatives with Teslas significantly. Tesla’s existing customer base is primarily liberal, and their movement to boycott Texas is expanding.  

This move comes right when almost every other car company is bringing credible competitive offerings to market, making Musk’s move a potentially substantial early Christmas present to these other companies as liberal Tesla buyers now begin to abandon Tesla because it doesn’t seem to support liberal ideas like not mistreating employees.  (Granted, Musk has gone off the rails in the past on this issue).  

Musk, in many ways, reminds me of Steve Jobs, who was genuinely brilliant, but in issues that had to do with ethics, and people seemed to be often pretty clueless.  

Let’s chat about why this move to Texas is happening at the worst possible time for Tesla

Tesla going to Texas is nuts

Texas is the state that has promised to boycott companies that don’t support the oil industry, and unless Tesla is planning on building a gas-powered car, you’d think it would qualify.  Texas is also working on a bill that would ban Tesla from servicing its cars in the State, making it interesting for the Tesla staff that drives, oh, I don’t know, Teslas.  Maybe this move will stop that proposal from making it to a bill, but Texas is hardly a fan of electric cars, given they are planning to penalize Tesla drivers for driving Teslas.  

Knowing how wedded Texas is to oil (it is the State’s most significant Industry), you’d think Musk would want to pick a state that maybe was a little more electricity favorable. Due to poor cold weather preparedness during their last power outage, they blamed their fledgling renewable energy industry.  And Tesla isn’t part of the protected natural gas Industry in Texas. They are part of the renewable energy industry under attack by Texas.  

I certainly get that Musk is frustrated with California.  Musk wanted to continue to put Tesla employees at risk during the Covid outbreak, and a local health official stepped in and said no.  Texas is far more willing to put workers at risk to preserve corporate profits, and I get that, but that doesn’t play well either for the typical liberal Tesla buyer.  

The move, which puts money in front of everything else, would play well to a conservative audience of which Texas is a significant part but, again, conservatives don’t buy Tesla cars. Liberals do.  There are already efforts to boycott Tesla resulting from past Musk decisions; this move could be the biggest one yet.  

Competitive risk

Up until now, Tesla hasn’t had much competition. Only a handful of carmakers have brought out electric cars, which generally underperformed Tesla’s because most were learning platforms for the carmakers.  But we are just short of most European and U.S. carmakers making a significant run at the segment with high-performance offerings coming from Audi and a breadth of compelling offerings coming from GM and Ford.  The Mustang Mach e has sold out, and GM sold out all of next year’s production of Cadillac Lyriq cars, and the fit and finish of the new Audi high-performance electric put any Tesla to shame.  

If those cars are selling out sight unseen, imagine what will happen when they hit the market? It’s an odd time to massively piss off your installed base, which is likely considering these alternatives much like they did the earlier Porsche Taycan

Wrapping up:

I’ve seen a lot of foolish moves, but typically, when you are about to receive a massive wave of compelling competitive offerings in the market, you want to embrace and love your customer base, not kick them in the butt and spit in their faces. Yet that is what Musk did with his announcement this week. While he has gotten away with doing crazy things in the past, this maneuver places him in a state that hates his product and his customer base. Maybe this is the final straw, and the camel isn’t at all happy.

The charges stem from an alleged scheme to bilk a fund for retired players out of close to $4 million.

Former guard Terrence Williams was the “linchpin” in the alleged scam, according to the indictment.

The indictment could carry a maximum of 20 years in prison.

The other players involved in the scam are mostly mid-2000s sixth-men and benchwarmers. Tony Allen, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, and Abraham Lincoln High School legend Sebastian Telfair were among the most notable hit with a charge of aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to committed fraud.

A former Chinese detective who worked in the Xinjiang region told CNN in an interview published Tuesday about some of the torture tactics he and other detectives used on individuals detained in the region.

The man was only identified by CNN as Jiang over fears the Chinese government would retaliate against his family still living in China.

He was deployed to several areas of Xinjiang about three or four times while he was a detective as part of China’s “Strike Hard” campaign that targeted ethnic minorities, according to CNN.

In April, Human Rights Watch released a 53-page report on China, detailing incarceration, torture, disappearances, and cultural erasure of ethnic Uyghurs in Xinjiang, as Insider previously reported.

One afternoon, he noticed that Bentley seemed to be in a haze. When the owner offered french fries, the dog turned his head and refused.

He took the dog to a veterinarian, who said that Bentley most probably picked up a discarded chocolate edible cannabis from a nearby middle school.

Although this incident is not new, experts say that the narcotic effect in dogs can be serious. It is also possible that these edibles contain chemicals other then THC which is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis.

Qualcomm and Why it May Be Time for Cities to Get a CTO

This week, Qualcomm has their big Smart Cities event in San Diego.  Qualcomm is one of the vendors driving the concept of Smart Cities into the market.  The promise of this effort to modernize and automate cities is the ability to do more with less.  Using security cameras to make up for police staffing shortages, sensors to ensure that water isn’t wasted, identifying fires early enough to stop them, reducing traffic and global warming due to inefficient streetlights, and eliminating most forms of waste.  

The difficulty, as Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon pointed out, is that while mayors may have operational skills, they typically are not technology experts. Cities often make massive errors regarding the technology they purchase by relying too much on the vendor who pitched the idea.  Cristiano argued that while Qualcomm is often pinch-hitting as a virtual CTO for the cities it is working with, having a dedicated person in this role could better assure independence and better assure things like continuity and interoperability between the technologies that are deployed.  

Given we are moving into an age of autonomous machines (cars, robots, and drones), Quantum AIs that can handle complex problems that current computers aren’t capable of handling, and even personal flying vehicles, the need for Smart Cities has never been greater.  But a lack of competence at the top in the form of a qualified CTO could lead to massive technological disasters that not only don’t help but could make things worse.  

The case for a Smart City CTO

The CTO position is relatively new in corporate governance.  It was created as a CEO resource so that the related company could have a technology vision consistent with the CEO’s operational vision.  The CEO figures out what strategy the company should follow, and the CTO then assesses how technology could best assist in the successful execution of that strategy.   

Care should be taken to assure the CTO is competent; having either worked for or been a CTO in the past in private industry would be a massive advantage because the CTO job in cities is relatively rare.  Once hired, the CTO would look at the short- and long-term goals for the city and then draft a proposal for the kind of technology needed for the city to meet those goals successfully.  

Qualcomm would be one of the safer vendor partners for an effort like this, given they work in the area but don’t provide complete solutions to it, instead of supplying technology to partners who, in turn, provide that complete solution.  They would be in an excellent position to discuss what other cities are doing, best practices, and even identify candidates for the CTO position.  

Two areas they’ll need to develop quickly are implementing an IoT sensor network best and preparing for quantum tools.  The first is a critical aspect of any Smart City, but if you don’t approach this problem correctly, you’ll overspend for a sensor network that may be obsolete when you complete it.  Quantum tools stand out as superior for managing complex problems like water management, stop light sequencing, and the most effective way to deploy your police force.  

Quantum AIs are expected to revolutionize logistics, allow cities to operate with far fewer people offsetting today’s staff shortages, and be instrumental in assuring the best response possible to a natural or artificial disaster.  

One exciting implementation is for trash pickup, where the trucks are only sent to homes that need their trash picked up and aren’t just making the rounds regardless of the need.  If this were coupled with an effort to reduce or eliminate waste and increase recycling, this would not only lower cost; it would reduce the cities’ waste footprint and be better for the planet.  

Wrapping up:

We are moving to a period where cities will be deploying technology at an increasing pace to serve their citizens better and make up for endemic staff shortages.   A qualified CTO could substantially reduce the waste, missteps, and failed efforts that often surround Smart City programs.  While companies one step removed from complete solutions like Qualcomm can step in and pinch-hit, they won’t know the unique needs of the city as well as a dedicated and qualified CTO.   

Given these systems cost millions and can be very damaging to the image of the city and its governing body, if they fail, the cost of CTO to assure that doesn’t happen seems trivial.  I expect cities without CTOs will have multiple expensive mistakes, much like companies, before establishing that same role.  Learn from those companies, and if you are planning on moving to a Smart City concept, get a qualified CTO to determine the lowest-cost, most effective path.
