Nvidia hopes to have a leg up over the competition by moving its version of the metaverse to the cloud. However, are other companies interested in doing the same? Microsoft, which is building its own metaverse, certainly seems interested in this route, creating its own cloud system called Azure. As a more efficient and cost-effective option, it seems likely that Meta will eventually place its metaverse on the cloud, as well.

There are many companies that can now offer cloud solutions to help anyone wanting to take this route. For some, this might be the most efficient and secure way to launch your own metaverse.

This move by Nvidia to take its omniverse over to the cloud is a significant one. It shows that they’re serious about competing with the likes of Meta when it comes to building this new digital environment. Whether other companies follow suit is yet to be seen but, as a more secure, accessible, and cost-effective solution, it certainly wouldn’t surprise anyone.

I’m at Dell Technology World this week. Michael Dell spent the first day talking about strategy, engaging with some of Dell’s more powerful customers like GMC and USAA, and closed with the amazing work Dell is doing to help Ukraine.

Vice-Chairman and Co-COO Jeff Clarke focused on the product launches and near-term Dell advances. Clarke opened with the amazing speed of advancements and trends redefining the technology industry and the world. He then showcased the Dell Workshop where there was a huge mystery box on one side and a robotic dog. Interesting side story:  At Dell World around five years ago, a guest speaker said that robotics would be the next big thing, but Dell did nothing in robotics subsequently. Or so we thought. Seeing a robotic dog in the Dell workshop might indicate that Dell didn’t ignore that prediction after all, but was simply unwilling to talk about it until now.  

Let’s go over the big thoughts from Clarke’s talk.

PCs

Even during the PC downturn of a few years back, Dell argued that PCs weren’t going away, and would not only resurge but become even more critical to work in the future. Based on Dell’s financials, it seems that the market agrees. During the pandemic, PC sales went through the roof. It is also interesting to note that during these massive supply chain problems, Dell’s Logistics Services division has stepped up to enable Dell’s teams to work around the supply deficits to protect Dell manufacturing from these problems.

One of the coolest things at Dell World this year is Concept Luna. It’s a laptop designed to show just how far you can go to create a truly sustainable laptop product. They featured it on stage, and I got a chance to see it in person while at the show. Not only can it be dismantled very quickly, but it can be upgraded rather than replaced. It uses several technologies like plastics based on plants that degrade safely in the environment.  

Another example was a new Alienware offering that gives a gamer a competitive advantage (they showcased Forza 5 on the stage), and the Alienware physical designs continue to impress.  

Easily accessible and fast infrastructure

Clarke also highlighted Dell’s enterprise storage portfolio designed for multi-cloud support targeting the hyper-scaler market at the high end. Key advancements are advanced cyber security, massive scalability (according to Dell, it’s 30x better than competitors), automated end-to-end management and 40 to 1 fast compression, and non-disruptive data-in-place upgrades, along with a long list of other features.

Other interesting capabilities were significant upgrades to existing products with no extra charges to existing customers and heavy VMware integration where needed. Typically, storage, by intent, isn’t very exciting because, when it gets exciting it generally is a bad thing, but Clarke found a way to make storage exciting while not being a bad thing. The level of implied flexibility that he noted was almost unbelievable: highly automated, extremely scalable and configurable, upgradeable, and very secure. What’s not to love? The audience certainly seemed excited, (most of the folks here this week are IT practitioners), suggesting Clarke’s announcements hit them where they lived and in a good way.

One of the interesting things that Dell shared that the audience seemed to really appreciate was that even with all of the advancements and product improvements, user incidents have dropped significantly. Loads have shifted from 80% of the time being spent on administration across Dell’s infrastructure offerings to 25% administration, allowing IT developers to do more of what they want to do: develop.  

One of the things Dell implied was that the improvements that Dell has implemented in infrastructure has massively improved Dell’s ability to respond to its own internal clients by speeding up their ability to execute while lowering operation costs significantly. This makes Dell far more competitive over time. I often think that companies that make products in this class need to talk about how they are using them to show how they not only use their own products, but how this use has been validated by Dell’s public financial performance numbers, which have been exceedingly strong for the segment.  

Wrapping up:

Clarke closed by building on the message that, thanks to Dell Technologies, Dell developers are doing more with their time to advance the company’s interests, as opposed to just keeping it running, than ever before. He mentioned that these advancements don’t just benefit Dell, but change and advance industries. Boeing came on stage (virtually) to talk about how it is massively changing how it develops aircraft using Dell’s latest technologies. Boeing can do far more in simulation to identify problems and come up with advancements before it ever builds the aircraft, which reduces development time and results in better and potentially safer aircraft. As a result, Boeing can spend more time assuring the result, and Dell is working with it to improve Boeing’s performance, trust, and capabilities. 

As I write this, today is Dell Technologies’ 38^th birthday. Jeff Clarke has been with the company for 35 of those years and I’m wondering just how much more amazing this company will become over the decades to come.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger predicts chip shortage will last until at least 2024. He says the industry will see challenges in areas like foundry capacity and tool availability.

Intel’s Client Computing Group (which handles consumer processors, among other things) is down 13 percent this quarter. Intel attributed that to a “ramp-down’ of the Apple CPU and modem business” and “OEM inventory burn” as well as “lower consumer and education demands.”

Intel is one of the companies investing heavily in new production lines, by the way, building new fabs in Ohio, Arizona, and Germany, though the current timeline suggests none of those new Fabs will go online until the chip shortage is over. In fact, Intel’s own chips are doing fairly well in the first quarter of this year.

A sharp drop in graphic chip prices could presage an unexpectedly quick ending to a global chip crunch that has crippled manufacturing from smartphones to cars, and the issue will be a central one for companies reporting results this week. The trigger is a drop in prices of GPUs, or graphics processing units, which are the brains of gaming machines and are spreading to other uses. Analysts at Baird recently downgraded GPU maker Nvidia to neutral after prices dropped.

Philanthropy and health care go hand in hand. When you work in healthcare you are constantly worried about the well-being of others. Philanthropy is the same. A Philanthropist and a Health Care Professional will both put your well-being before their own. Hours and hours are dedicated to everyone else, with little thought to yourself.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

Maintaining a good work/life balance is extremely important as an entrepreneur. If you devote too much of your time to your job you will burn out. Life is meant to be enjoyed, so you have to make sure to take some time for yourself and your family.

What Three Tools (Apps, Books, Podcasts, Etc.) Would You Recommend To Anyone Trying To Start Her Own Business?

Podcasts. There are some great podcasts that can help to motivate you and get you in the right mindset for the day. I also recommend having a good calendar application to keep track of all of your meetings. When you first start out, it feels like there are so many meetings, and a good calendar app can help you keep track of it. Don’t forget to spend time reading self-help books. I know they’re not an instant favorite if you’re not used to reading them, but they will also help to keep you motivated and in the right mindset.

AMD and Mercedes may be one of the most powerful and interesting technology racing partnerships currently in existence. AMD had a prior partnership with Ferrari, but it seemed to be more of a marketing relationship than an operational one. This time, the AMD relationship highlights one of the market advantages in terms of server performance, making it more powerful than the earlier effort. It showcases how these things both should and should not, be done.  

Let’s talk about AMD, F1 racing, and Ferrari this week.

AMD and Ferrari. The early years

The first AMD/Ferrari relationship was fun, but since it involved AMD laptops that were used by the pit crew, it was more of a marketing relationship because pit-crew laptops are more about rugged designs than they are about processor performance. Still, one of my favorite laptops came out of that deal, a co-branded red Ferrari laptop from Acer. It had decent power for the time, not the greatest battery life, and it made a Ferrari engine sound when booting which I so enjoyed when I was in a conference room meeting (the other attendees not so much). 

It was good for sales who could bring clients to the races, and an accessional analyst and these were awesome trips. Some of the most fun at the time was that Intel had tied its Itanium brand, which was doing poorly in the market, to a team that was also doing very poorly. Ferrari was constantly in the winning circle while the Intel team seemed to rarely finish a race. Clients, reporters, and analysts got a big kick out of seeing the AMD car win while the Intel car broke down in the middle of the track.  

But this was more marketing drama and sales entertainment than any real endorsement of AMD’s technology in a meaningful way by Ferrari. 

What changed?

One thing that has changed is that AMD is truly competitive now. It’s no longer merely the lower-priced, lower-performing option to Intel. While it’s often still priced under Intel’s offerings, AMD’s products perform in-line and often materially better than its Intel counterparts.  This means that a team like Mercedes Petronas is getting a competitive advantage from using AMD, this time on their servers, to gain a material racing advantage.

Using AMD’s now market-leading EPYC processors, Mercedes F1 claims a 20% gain in performance for computational fluid dynamics which define much of how its race cars will perform on the track. F1 car advantages, outside of financial advantages which can be dramatic, are often in the single-digit percentage range so a 20% competitive advantage in any critical aspect of racing operations is potentially huge for the team.  

Granted, there isn’t an immediate impact of these advantages on cars because technology is being applied to car design which can take months to years to be realized. But, should this partnership improve, as expected, Mercedes’ improved performance on the track with one of the new, better-analyzed designs will be a huge gold star for AMD and an incredibly important set of wins for both entities. It will return Mercedes to the winner’s circle and highlight that AMD EPYC solutions are more than competitive. They’re potentially game-changing.  

Wrapping up:

AMD’s first partnership with Ferrari did uplift AMD’s brand, but it was kind of a disconnect given Ferrari is a premium brand and AMD, at the time, was a value brand. But in the years since that partnership, AMD has improved its competitive capabilities, particularly in the server space. Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 recognized an opportunity to gain competitive advantage using technology from AMD. As a result, we are likely to see the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team begin to perform better and AMD rightly taking some of the credit for that performance which should help AMD market that advantage far more successfully going forward.  

In closing, it is also interesting to note that Qualcomm now has a Ferrari partnership. Not with the racing cars but for in-car entertainment and for some of Ferrari’s F1 in-car systems.  The two efforts aren’t competing, and there is a chance that some future teams could be sponsored by both companies.  

F1 racing is likely going to get a ton more technologically interesting going forward.
