While generative AI systems cannot be considered inventors under US patent laws, the US Patent and Trademark Office has updated its guidelines on how they can be used in the process of creating innovations. The agency’s director, John Squires, said in a notice obtained by Reuters that the USPTO deems genAI to be “analogous” to other tools that inventors might use in their process, including lab equipment, software and research databases.
“AI systems, including generative AI and other computational models, are instruments used by human inventors,” Squires wrote. “They may provide services and generate ideas, but they remain tools used by the human inventor who conceived the claimed invention.”
The notice [PDF], which is set to be published in the Federal Register on November 28, notes that there’s no separate process for evaluating whether an AI-assisted invention qualifies for a patent. “When multiple natural persons are involved in creating an invention with AI assistance, the traditional joint inventorship principles apply,” Squires added.
The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has ruled that “AI cannot be named as an inventor on a patent application (or issued patent) and that only natural persons can be inventors.” There’s no change to that stance under the latest USPTO guidelines. But the updated rules do offer more clarity as to whether things like new medications that are developed with the help of genAI systems can be patented.

quonset writes: Australia last updated their weather site a decade ago. In October, during one of the hottest days of the year, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) revealed its new web site and was immediately castigated for doing so. Complaints ranged from a confusing layout to not being able to find information. Farmers were particularly incensed when they found out they could no longer input GPS coordinates to find forecasts for a specific location. When it was revealed the cost of this update was A$96.5 million ($62.3 million), 20 times the original cost estimate, the temperature got even hotter.
With more than 2.6 billion views a year, Bom tried to explain that the site’s refresh — prompted by a major cybersecurity breach in 2015 — was aimed at improving stability, security and accessibility. It did little to satisfy the public. Some frustrated users turned to humour: “As much as I love a good game of hide and seek, can you tell us where you’re hiding synoptic charts or drop some clues?”
Malcolm Taylor, an agronomist in Victoria, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that the redesign was a complete disaster. “I’m the person who needs it and it’s not giving me the information I need,” the plant and soil scientist said. As psychologist and neuroscientist Joel Pearson put it, “First you violate expectations by making something worse, then you compound the injury by revealing the violation was both expensive and avoidable. It’s the government IT project equivalent of ordering a renovation, discovering the contractor has made your house less functional, and then learning they charged you for a mansion.”

Two top NFC teams will face off in a Black Friday showdown airing on Prime Video. The Philadelphia Eagles will host the Chicago Bears this Friday afternoon. The Eagles faced some setbacks this past week, dealing with a surprising loss to the Dallas Cowboys who came back from a 21 point deficit to win last Sunday and a potential season-ending injury for rookie safety Drew Mukuma, who fractured his ankle in that game. The Eagles are still ranked No. 2 overall in the NFC, and the Bears are right behind them at No. 3, so the results of this matchup will be significant to the playoff race.
The Bears vs. Eagles game will stream live nationally on Amazon Prime Video Friday at 3 p.m. ET. Keep reading to find out what you need to know about Friday’s game, and the rest of the Week 13 schedule.

Twenty years after surgeons in France performed the world’s first face transplant, the experimental field that procedure launched is now confronting a troubling record of patient deaths, buried negative data and a healthcare system that leaves recipients financially devastated and medically vulnerable.
About 50 face transplants have been performed globally since Isabelle Dinoire received her partial face graft at University Hospital CHU Amiens-Picardie in November 2005. A 2024 JAMA Surgery study reported five-year graft survival of 85% and 10-year survival of 74%, concluding that the procedure is “an effective reconstructive option for patients with severe facial defects.” The study did not track psychological wellbeing, financial outcomes, employment status or quality of life. Roughly 20% of face transplant patients have died from rejection, kidney failure, or heart failure.
The anti-rejection medications that keep transplanted faces alive can destroy kidneys and weaken immune systems to the point where routine infections become life-threatening. In the United States, the Department of Defense has funded most operations, treating them as a frontier for wounded veterans, because private insurers refuse to cover the costs. Patients who survive the surgery often find themselves unable to afford medications, transportation to follow-up appointments or basic caregiving. The field’s long-term grants cover surgical innovation but not the lifelong needs of the people who receive these transplants.
Following up on the discussion from earlier this month among GCC developers over switching to C++20 by default for the GCC compiler as the default C++ standard when not otherwise set, that change has indeed happened. Merged now is the change defaulting to C++20 (well, the GNU++20 dialect) rather than C++17/GNU++17 when not otherwise specified when compiling C++ code…
Letting people teleport into your home via Horizon Hyperscape feels like magic, though the scans are lower quality than the old cloud-streamed solo system.
If you missed it, last week Meta started rolling out an overhaul of its Horizon Hyperscape technology, letting you share new captures as unlisted Horizon Worlds and invite people to visit them as Meta Avatars.
These Hyperscape worlds are also rendered on-device on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, in contrast to the cloud-streamed approach previously used for Hyperscape. Up to 8 people can be in a single instance, and the system also includes support for mobile users via the Meta Horizon app.
After receiving the update on his Quest 3, UploadVR’s Kyle Riesenbeck rescanned the downstairs living, dining, and kitchen area of his home. A few hours later, it was ready, and so he invited me over to visit.
Appearing as a Meta Avatar, Kyle gave me a guided tour of this huge section of his home, pointing out the details the capture kept, as well as the ones it doesn’t quite resolve.
Compared to the previous cloud-rendered solo Hyperscape system, there’s a clear drop in quality. For starters, the rendering resolution is lower, with visible pixelation and aliasing for anything relatively far away. As well as this, the Gaussian splat density appears to be lower, blurring some of the finer details captured by the previous implementation of Hyperscape. And despite these regressions, the performance was not solid, with the frame rate dropping when a large enough section of the scan was in my field of view.
Still, these complaints aside, I still had a feeling of being in Kyle’s home, and could still see relatively minute details like the place names on the badges and pins he and his wife had pinned to a board after their travels. Further, it’s amazing that this experience is even possible at all on an affordable mobile chipset from 2023, and we’re due an XR2 Gen 3 next year that should make the experience a lot sharper and smoother.
If you own a Quest 3 or Quest 3S, or have the Meta Horizon app on your phone, and want to visit Kyle’s home too, here’s the link: Kyle’s Home on Meta Horizon Worlds. Let us know what you think of it!
After visiting Kyle’s home, I also scanned the living room and kitchen area of the apartment I live in, and found the resemblance to be remarkable. In fact, visiting it in VR while in my office induced such a strong feeling of presence that I tried to walk through my virtual kitchen, and thus bumped straight into my office wall. As someone who has been using positionally-tracked VR for well over a decade, I thought the days of mistaking the virtual for real like this were far behind me. But I was wrong. And it’s a testament to just how realistic Hyperscape scans can feel, especially for places you’re familiar with in reality, even in this lower quality on-device version.
Meta says it’s still “rolling out” the Hyperscape sharing and social update, and keep in mind that any scans you make before your headset gets it won’t be able to be shared or visited. Once you do get the update though, be sure to give it a try, as the ability to scan, share, and co-inhabit realistic reconstructions of real-world spaces with headsets that go on sale for as little as $200 is a truly remarkable technological achievement.

The UK government will levy a pay-per-mile tax on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles starting April 2028, UK’s finance minister Rachel Reeves announced, a measure designed to offset some of the fuel duty revenue that will disappear as drivers shift away from petrol and diesel cars. Electric vehicles will be charged 3 pence per mile and plug-in hybrids 1.5 pence per mile, payable annually alongside car tax. An average driver covering 8,000 miles a year would pay around $320, roughly half what a petrol or diesel driver pays in fuel duty.
The Office for Budget Responsibility expects the tax to generate $1.45 billion in its first year and $2.51 billion by 2030-31, offsetting about a quarter of the revenue losses projected from the EV transition by 2050. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders warned the new charge would “suppress demand” and make sales targets harder to achieve. New Zealand and Iceland have already introduced road pricing for EVs; demand dropped in the former but held steady in the latter.

Smash Eat Grow, a free-to-play VR multiplayer playground where you eat opponents to win, enters early access today on Quest.
Originally announced in September, Smash Eat Grow is a family-friendly title by XR Games (BEATABLE) and Obstinate where you play as hungry alien creatures called Smashers causing havoc across a fully destructible Earth. Eating objects lets you grow larger, and you’ll eventually grow big enough to consume your rivals to become the biggest player on the map.

Completing matches earns BUX, which can be used to unlock new cosmetics and enter tournaments. As for its early access roadmap, both developers previously advised there’s an ongoing roadmap to further expand Smash Eat Grow that includes additional maps, game modes, Smashers, powers, and customizations.
Elaborating further in a new statement, Storm Griffith, Obstinate’s CEO and founder, advised a holiday update is in the works. This upcoming update promises new Smasher abilities, further cosmetic customizations, more biomes, and private friend lobbies. An exact release date is currently unconfirmed, though we know it’s launching in December.
Smash Eat Grow is out now in early access on the wider Meta Quest platform.
If you have a Pixel 10 phone that you use for turn-by-turn directions in lieu of a dedicated GPS device, Google has an update that might be right up your alley. A Google Maps power-saving mode is now available for Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The company announced this feature earlier this month as part of its November 2025 Pixel Drop.
Power-saving mode is only available in portrait orientation and it works on your lock screen. If you tap the power button while using the driving navigation tool, the app will switch to a simpler monochrome look that retains the map layer, as 9to5Google notes. It looks a bit like the dark mode map in the Uber app.
You’ll see only see key details your journey, such as your next turn and expected travel time. Other elements, such as your current speed, are stripped out. You can still swipe down to see your notifications.
If you press the power button or tap the screen, Google Maps will revert to the standard view. The app also turns off power-saving mode when you get to your destination.
Google says that the power-saving mode can extend your Pixel 10’s battery life by up to four hours, so this could come in handy for long drives when you don’t have an easy way to charge your phone while you have it mounted on your dashboard. The more streamlined look could perhaps help to mitigate distracted driving too.
Google will probably bring the feature to other devices down the line, but it’s disappointing that the company is limiting it to the Pixel 10 lineup for now. Perhaps it will end up offering this stripped-down UI on the Android Auto version of Google Maps someday. too
It seems that Google is enabling power-saving mode by default via an update on its end. If you’d rather not be able to use the feature, you can switch it off by going to the settings in the app, then Navigation > Driving options and tapping the toggle for power-saving mode.
