Give back to open source on Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is always a reminder to me to consider how to give back to open source projects, communities, and organizations. In 2012, GivingTuesday was created to encourage people to simply do good. “Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.”

Musk faces fines if Twitter’s gutted child safety team becomes overwhelmed

Musk faces fines if Twitter’s gutted child safety team becomes overwhelmed

A few weeks ago, Twitter CEO Elon Musk asked his remaining staff for a show of loyalty by prompting them to click a “yes” link in an email. By clicking yes, the employees were telling Musk that they agreed to work longer hours—if they could keep their jobs. It was Musk’s way of seeing who on his existing team was truly ready to fall in line behind his “hardcore” efforts to build Twitter 2.0. Musk quickly learned how unattractive his offer was when an overwhelming number of employees did not click yes, and among those rejecting Musk’s severe terms was apparently almost half of Twitter’s global team dedicated to preventing child sexual exploitation on the platform.

Three people familiar with Twitter’s current staffing told Bloomberg that when 2022 started, Twitter had 20 team members responsible for reviewing and escalating reports of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). Today, after layoffs and resignations, there are fewer than 10 specialists forming what Bloomberg described as “an overwhelmed skeleton crew.” It seems that despite Musk continually tweeting that blocking CSAM is Twitter’s top priority and even going so far as inviting users to tweet CSAM directly at him, Musk may already be losing his battle to keep the material off Twitter.

“Musk didn’t create an environment where the team wanted to stay,” sources told Bloomberg.

FTX-backed DEX Serum Calls Itself 'Defunct,' Promotes Community Fork

Serum, a decentralized crypto exchange backed by FTX, notified its 215,000 Twitter followers the project is “defunct” after the crypto exchange giant’s sudden collapse — while pointing users towards a community-led fork of the project. From a report: “The Serum program on mainnet became defunct” following FTX’s implosion, Serum tweeted. “As upgrade authority is held by FTX, security is in jeopardy, leading to protocols like Jupiter and Radium moving away,” it added, referring to two DeFi projects on the Solana blockchain. Earlier this month, the now-bankrupt FTX exchange was hacked for more than $400 million, which is said to have compromised the security of Serum’s code. This is because the “update authority” for its code was held solely in the hands of insiders at the FTX exchange, Serum explained. The team also commented on its native Serum (SRM) token, stating its future was “uncertain” and that developers have proposed to scrap its use due to exposure to FTX and its sister trading firm Alameda Research.

Lina: Tales of the M1 GPU

Asahi Lina gives a detailed
update
on progress toward a graphics driver for Apple M1 hardware.

There is still a long road ahead! The UAPI that we are using right
now is still a prototype, and there are a lot of new features that
need to be added or redesigned in order to support a full Vulkan
driver in the future. Since Linux mandates that the UAPI needs to
remain stable and backwards compatible across versions (unlike
macOS), that means that the kernel driver will not be heading
upstream for many months, until we have a more complete
understanding of the GPU rendering parameters and have implemented
all the new design features needed by Vulkan.

Musk asks if Apple “hates free speech” because it cut Twitter ad spending

An iPhone screen prompt asks a user to confirm if they want to remove the Twitter app from the device.

Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk yesterday asked if Apple “hates free speech”—because the iPhone maker isn’t spending as much on Twitter advertising as it used to. “Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America?” Musk wrote. “What’s going on here @tim_cook?”

Musk didn’t explain how Apple’s Twitter ad spending is related to its stance on free speech. But he subsequently wrote a series of tweets criticizing Apple’s policies and claimed that Apple threatened to pull Twitter off the iOS App Store.

“Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why,” Musk wrote a bit later. Musk did not provide further details on Apple’s demands or explain how Apple conveyed the message to Twitter.

Nintendo's Second Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer Drops Today, Watch Here
Nintendo released the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie back at the beginning of October and fans were underwhelmed. Chris Pratt’s rendition of the 41-year running video game icon just sounded like a vaguely New Yorkish Chris Pratt—definitely not a familiar sound when compared to someone who grew up with the sounds of Charles Martinet.

Bringing horrible space monsters to life with performance capture tech

Directed by Sean Dacanay. Produced by Justin Wolfson. Edited by Jeremy Smolnik, with Billy Ward. Click here for transcript. (video link)

We’ve watched the gameplay. We’ve heard the terrifying noises. We’ve seen the scary sights. Now, in the final part of our peek behind the scenes of Glen Schofield’s upcoming horror sci-fi adventure The Callisto Protocol, we’re examining how the characters move—and how the more motion capture you can do, the better your characters will look on-screen.

As Glen notes in the video, Callisto Protocol makes heavy use of a technology called “motion capture”—actors dressed in special reflective suits act out the motions you want your characters to make, and computer-controlled cameras capture hundreds of frames per second as the actors do their thing. When done well, “mo-cap,” as it’s called, can drastically reduce the time it takes to animate a game’s characters. Rather than having skilled animators meticulously hand-animate every frame of a character’s movements, the raw performance data and movements from the actors are mapped over digital models. While hand-animating can lead to beautiful results, it’s impossible to beat the performance one gets from motion capture—since it’s an actor actually pantomiming, the resulting movements come with all the grace and subtle nuances with which living beings imbue their motions, nuances that animators have to create manually (and often at considerable time and expense).

UK Waters Down Internet Rules Plan After Free Speech Outcry

The British government has abandoned a plan to force tech firms to remove internet content that is harmful but legal, after the proposal drew strong criticism from lawmakers and civil liberties groups. From a report: The U.K. on Tuesday defended its decision to water down the Online Safety Bill, an ambitious but controversial attempt to crack down on online racism, sexual abuse, bullying, fraud and other harmful material. Similar efforts are underway in the European Union and the United States, but the U.K.’s was one of the most sweeping. In its original form, the bill gave regulators wide-ranging powers to sanction digital and social media companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.

Critics had expressed concern that a requirement for the biggest platforms to remove “legal but harmful” content could lead to censorship and undermine free speech. The Conservative government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who took office last month, has now dropped that part of the bill, saying it could “over-criminalize” online content. The government hopes the change will be enough to get the bill through Parliament, where it has languished for 18 months, by mid-2023. Digital Secretary Michelle Donelan said the change removed the risk that “tech firms or future governments could use the laws as a license to censor legitimate views.”
