Autism affects the microbiome, not the other way around

An altered microbiome has been associated with—and thereby either implicitly or explicitly implicated as a partial cause of—a wide range of human maladies. These include immune disorders like celiac disease, asthma, and diabetes; obesity; cancers; psychiatric disorders like depression and Alzheimer’s disease; and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). It’s been tied to so many things that Jonathan Eisen felt compelled to start the “Overselling the Microbiome Awards.” He had to compile the list for years, even though he’s an evolutionary biologist who truly acknowledges and understands the vital role our microbiome plays in our health.
The notion that an altered microbiome can be a causative factor in ASD comes from studies with mice, in which transferring gut flora from humans with ASD into mice generated social deficits and behavioral abnormalities in the animals. But evidence in humans had issues, so a group of Australian scientists who shared Eisen’s wariness, led by Jacob Gratten, decided to perform a rigorous test of the idea.
A failure to replicate
The Australian team knew that ASD is often associated with GI symptoms and realized that it is tempting to look for and even assume an intestinal component to the disorder. But they note that the human studies linking an altered microbiome to ASD are pretty weak: they are small, they are biased and fail to consider confounding variables, and they are poorly designed and analyzed. Moreover, the researchers write, “a meta-analysis of human microbiota-associated animal studies has raised concerns that the sheer extent of positive findings is implausible.”

NASA Seeks Ideas For a Nuclear Reactor On the Moon
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Phys.org: NASA and the nation’s top federal nuclear research lab on Friday put out a request for proposals for a fission surface power system. NASA is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory to establish a sun-independent power source for missions to the moon by the end of the decade. If successful in supporting a sustained human presence on the moon, the next objective would be Mars. NASA says fission surface power could provide sustained, abundant power no matter the environmental conditions on the moon or Mars. The reactor would be built on Earth and then sent to the moon.
Submitted plans for the fission surface power system should include a uranium-fueled reactor core, a system to convert the nuclear power into usable energy, a thermal management system to keep the reactor cool, and a distribution system providing no less than 40 kilowatts of continuous electric power for 10 years in the lunar environment. Some other requirements include that it be capable of turning itself off and on without human help, that it be able to operate from the deck of a lunar lander, and that it can be removed from the lander and run on a mobile system and be transported to a different lunar site for operation. Additionally, when launched from Earth to the moon, it should fit inside a 12-foot (4-meter) diameter cylinder that’s 18 feet (6 meters) long. It should not weigh more than 13,200 pounds (6,000 kilograms). The proposal requests are for an initial system design and must be submitted by Feb. 19.

Locked out of “God mode,” runners are hacking their treadmills

JD Howard just wanted to watch cloud security tutorials. Howard, a construction industry worker on sabbatical, spent $4,000 on a NordicTrack X32i treadmill, lured in by its 32-inch HD screen and the opportunity to exercise body and mind. His plan was to spend his time away from work exercising while watching technical videos from learning platforms such as Pluralsight and Udemy. But his treadmill had other ideas.
Despite having a huge display strapped to it, NordicTrack’s hardware pushes people to subscribe to exercise software operated by iFit, its parent company, and doesn’t let you watch videos from other apps or external sources. iFit’s content includes exercise classes and running routes, which automatically change the incline of the treadmill depending on the terrain on the screen. But Howard, and many other NordicTrack owners, weren’t drawn to the hardware by iFit’s videos. They were drawn in by how easy the fitness machines were to hack.

Friday FOSS fest: Franz, RamBox, Pidgin and more
Most modern chat systems are entirely proprietary: proprietary clients, talking proprietary protocols to proprietary servers. There’s no need for this: there are free open standards for one-to-one and one-to-many comms for precisely this sort of system, and some venerable clients are still a lot more capable than you might remember.

DuckDuckGo wants to stop apps tracking you on Android

At the end of April, Apple’s introduction of App Tracking Transparency tools shook the advertising industry to its core. iPhone and iPad owners could now stop apps from tracking their behavior and using their data for personalized advertising. Since the new privacy controls launched, almost $10 billion has been wiped from the revenues of Snap, Meta Platform’s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
Now, a similar tool is coming to Google’s Android operating system—although not from Google itself. Privacy-focused tech company DuckDuckGo, which started life as a private search engine, is adding the ability to block hidden trackers to its Android app. The feature, dubbed “App Tracking Protection for Android,” is rolling out in beta from today and aims to mimic Apple’s iOS controls. “The idea is we block this data collection from happening from the apps the trackers don’t own,” says Peter Dolanjski, a director of product at DuckDuckGo. “You should see far fewer creepy ads following you around online.”

Visualizations Show the Extensive Cloud of Debris Russia's Anti-Satellite Test Created
Satellite trackers have been working overtime to figure out just how much dangerous debris Russia created when it destroyed one of its own satellites early Monday — and the picture they’ve painted looks bleak. Multiple visual simulations of Russia’s anti-satellite, or ASAT, test show a widespread cloud of debris that will likely menace other objects in orbit for years. The Verge reports: It’s going to take weeks or even months to fully understand just how bad the situation is, but early visualizations of the ASAT test created by satellite trackers show an extensive trail of space debris left in the wake of the breakup. The fragments appear like a dotted snake in orbit, stretching out and moving in roughly the same direction that Kosmos 1408 used to move around Earth. And there’s one thing the visualizers agree on: this snake of debris isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. “There will be some potential collision risk to most satellites in [low Earth orbit] from the fragmentation of Cosmos 1408 over the next few years to decades,” LeoLabs, a private space tracking company in the US, wrote in a blog post.
Two visualizations created by the European Union’s Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) network and space software company AGI reveal what likely happened in the first moment of impact when Russia’s missile intercepted Kosmos 1408. They both show how the debris cloud grew instantly and spread throughout space. AGI’s simulation also shows just how close the cloud comes to intersecting with the International Space Station, validating NASA’s concerns and the agency’s decision to have the astronauts shelter in place.
Another visualization created by Hugh Lewis, a professor of engineering at the University of Southampton specializing in space debris, shows just how widely the debris from Kosmos 1408 has spread out in space. Lewis explains that when Russia’s missile hit the satellite, each of the fragments that were created got a little kick, sending them to higher and lower altitudes. Each piece is moving at a different speed depending on the height of its orbit. Lewis says that the cloud will continue to morph over time. The debris fragments in the lower orbits will fall to Earth and out of orbit more quickly, while the ones in higher orbits will stay in space much longer.

How AI Is Being Used by The Financial Sector

The various applications of artificial intelligence have found use in nearly all parts of the business world, and the financial sector is no different.
Here are some of the ways in which banks, financial advisors, registered investment advisors, and other players in the financial sector have been making use of artificial intelligence.
1 – Risk management
Artificial intelligence plays a big role in deterring credit scores. There are various approaches on how to determine someone’s credit score, and the vast majority of them rely on running user data by an algorithm that will assess the information provided and boil that person’s overall risk factor down to a number — their credit score.
This, in turn, is used to help financial institutions decide everything from which loans to approve and even what kind of interest rates they should offer. This type of financial data analysis was performed before the use of AI became widespread, but modern solutions make the process easier, faster, and more accurate, all at a scale never seen before.
2 – Invoice processing
AI automated invoice processing solutions have quickly become a must-have for many industries in the financial sector. This type of software can help companies ensure invoice accuracy, automatically approve invoices, identify any sudden changes on regular invoices, and more. These solutions can also handle the bulk of the data entry process that is often involved with processing incoming invoices.
3 – Customer management
While most scripted chatbots are barely worth considering “artificial intelligence”, some financial institutions have taken to using chatbots that can look up answers online and even use machine learning to figure out the best responses for common questions. These are particularly useful for big banks, as any question a bot can take care of is a question a human employee won’t have to take care of.
4 – Fraud detection
Machine learning algorithms can sift through financial documents in order to spot patterns and incongruences, and there are already algorithms that have been trained specifically to identify potential cases of financial fraud. These are used not only by law enforcement agencies but also by banks and investment funds looking to make sure they’re making safe investments.
The use of fraud detection software may also be required for banks that wish to comply with local and international laws. Especially when it comes to laws related to money laundering and tax evasion.
5 – Rule compliance
The massive amount of rules that impact the financial sector combined with constant regulation changes can make it hard for agents in this market to make sure they’re always in compliance. To help with this problem, AI applications have been designed to keep an eye on new reports and regulation changes and to use that knowledge to make sure operations within a bank or firm are complying with the newest regulations.
AI designed to help with rule compliance isn’t perfect, but they’re good enough to be a commercial product today. And of course, like every other implementation in this list, this type of AI is only expected to get better over time.

Types Of Dumpster Rentals In Us
Dumpster rentals are available in many areas, but you need to know what the rules are in your area before you can rent one. For example, some municipalities (counties) in the United States require you to get a permit to rent a dumpster, and also to pay a per-ton fee for the amount of trash you throw away.
The same applies to commercial entities: in some states, you must get a permit from the Department of Environmental Protection before you can rent a dumpster. In general, commercial dumpster service providers in the United States are tightly regulated and must comply with the rules and regulations set out by the Department of Environmental Protection.
Types Of Dumpster Rentals
Commercial Dumpster
Commercial Dumpster rentals in US is always a cost effective way to clean up after construction projects, large yard waste removal, household cleaning and other large loads.
Commercial Dumpster rentals are very convenient way to remove waste and convenient way to send your waste. If you are planning an upcoming construction project, large yard waste removal or want to clean house, then renting a large dumpster will save you money and help you to reduce your carbon footprint. Renting a large container is a great way to recycle.
In the USA, the commercial dumpster rentals are known as roll-offs. Roll-off containers, also known as dumpsters, are a popular choice as they are considered a more convenient option to other dumpster rentals. With a roll off dumpster, the trash is simply rolled into the dumpster making it easier to add the garbage.
The containers are usually picked up by a garbage truck that rolls the container out and then rolls it back in when the container is full. Roll off containers are usually a bit more expensive than other dumpster rentals, but they are well worth it because they are cheaper in the long run.
Front Load Dumpsters
Front load dumpsters are becoming more popular in the garbage disposal industry. The main reason for this is due to their greater collection capacity. The standard dumpster size is 48 cubic yards, whereas the standard front load dumpster size is 90 cubic yards.
The increased size provides improved efficiency and the need for the dumpster to be picked up less frequently. If you have a project that requires a front load dumpster, we can help you navigate the process to find the right size to meet your needs.
Rear Load Dumpster
A rear load dumpster is a large dumpster that is normally used for big scale cleanups and construction site waste disposal. This type of dumpster has a smaller opening at the top of the container and a ramp that can be used to dump its contents in.
It is usually placed near the working site and its contents can be easily dumped using a fork lift or sometimes a strong forklift driver can lift the container by hand and empty out the contents. This type of dumpster is very convenient and easy to empty as well. It is often used for waste recycling and can be picked up easily.
Benefits Of Dumpster Rentals
Dumpster rentals in the United States are great for people who are in the process of house construction or renovation. These are containers that are carried on trucks and are brought to the site of the construction or renovation and help in disposing of the waste material.
Dumpster rentals in the United States are also available for businesses. The services for businesses are beneficial for companies with large production facilities and for companies that are constructing new facilities or making additions to the current ones.

Doubts Grow Over Wakayama IR Financing
Akihabara News (Tokyo) — The Wakayama Prefectural Assembly has put its foot down, demanding that the Clairvest Neem Ventures-led consortium reveal how it would fund the construction of its proposed US$4.3 billion Integrated Resort (IR) including a casino before allowing the approval process to continue.
Wakayama Prefecture had previously announced that it would conduct a total of fourteen public hearings from November 25 to December 5, but this plan is now on ice until Clairvest can put some evidence on the table of its financial capability.
Last week, the Clairvest Group revealed in its latest financial disclosure in Canada that the entire book value (the value of their total assets minus the value of their total liabilities) of the firm had reached about US$711 million. Clearly, Clairvest itself can only front a small fraction of the development funds with its own money.
Caesars Entertainment, an undoubted giant, is marked to become the Wakayama casino operator, but it has already stated that it will be paying nothing for the IR’s construction.
Other mooted members of the Wakayama IR consortium, such as William Weidner’s AMSE Resorts Japan and esports entrepreneur Mario Ho, likely have less money to chip in than Clairvest.
Unless there are additional deep-pocketed consortium members, the project would need to rely mainly on bank financing, and there’s plenty of reason to think that most lenders won’t be jumping at the prospect.
Still, Clairvest did tell the prefectural assembly that it is “negotiating with megabanks.” It has also been reported that Project Manager Takeshi Kaji is working hard to bring about three other large Japanese companies into the consortium.
Brendan Bussmann, partner at Global Market Advisors, told Akihabara News last month that “Clairvest has a strong track record with the developments they have invested in by making sure they have a solid foundation of financial standing to complete the project. I would be surprised if it was anything less as it pushes forward with its consortium in Wakayama.”
Even if the consortium can somehow scrape together the US$4.3 billion, that would still leave it vulnerable to unexpected construction delays and costs, such as damage from earthquakes or typhoons, or perhaps a future wave of the pandemic.
No one wants to see a half-constructed eyesore in the middle of Marina City with no money left to do anything about it—much like what Saipan is now dealing with in relation to its Imperial Pacific International fiasco.

DogPhone Lets Pets Ring Their Owners
An anonymous reader quotes a report from the Guardian: [R]esearchers have created a hi-tech option for canines left home alone: a ball that allows them to call their owners on the old dog and bone. The device — nicknamed the DogPhone — is a soft ball that, when moved, sends a signal to a laptop that launches a video call, and the sound of a ringing telephone. The owner can choose whether to take the call, and when to hang up, while they can also place a call to their pet — although the dog has to move the ball to pick up.
The research, which is published in the Proceedings of the Association for Computing Machinery on Computer-Human interaction and is being presented at the 2021 ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces Conference in Lodz, Poland, reveals how [Dr Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, of the University of Glasgow, and first author of the research] and researchers from Aalto University in Finland settled on a soft ball to create the device. The DogPhone underwent a number of iterations to ensure it had the right level of sensitivity towards movement — these were tested over 16 days by Hirskyj-Douglas and her nine-year-old black labrador, Zack.
A diary detailing the calls between owner and pet suggests the latter did not always seem to know what he was doing — despite having been shown five times how the system worked. “Dog rang me but was not interested in our call instead was checking for things in his bed,” Hirskyj-Douglas noted during the testing of one iteration. Another entry reveals the potential pitfalls of the DogPhone. “Dog walking around wagging and then laying down. I was in a meeting so had to hang up quickly,” one record reveals. The team say that many of the calls made by Zack — who was left alone for about eight hours during testing days — appear to have been accidents although they caution that may simply be the human perspective. “For example, when the dog triggered the system with their butt, this could have been deliberate and the dog’s unique way of triggering an interaction,” they write.
