Google Maps now shows traffic lights at intersections

It looks like Google Maps is getting a new road feature: traffic lights. Google has been experimenting with marking intersections with traffic lights for a few months now, but today, as first spotted by Android Police, the feature is getting a wide rollout.

Google Maps traffic light support is just a small, static marker in the middle of an intersection indicating that there is a traffic light there. You have to zoom in really close to see the traffic lights, but if we zoom in far enough, we’re seeing them on Android, iOS, and the Web. As always the map features are going to depend on Google’s data set, and right now we’re only seeing those in the US. They show up when browsing the map or navigating.

For now, it does not seem like Google has a use for the traffic lights other than displaying them on a map. It would be great if navigation could shout out “turn left at the next light” for verbal directions, but that’s not happening yet. The state-of-the-art for traffic light navigation can be found in some Audis that, through a subscription service, can pull in live traffic light countdown data and can tell you how fast to go to make the next light.

Netflix's New Free-To-Watch Gambit Comes With A Very Dumb Catch

Netflix has always stood out from many of its competitors by eschewing an ad-supported model since its inception, no matter how hard its investors begged the company to consider otherwise. They’re still very much no going that route, but a “free” version of the service exists now—sorta.

Sony ponders potential PS to PC ports

Horizon: Zero Dawn probably won't be the last game Sony ports from a PlayStation platform to PC.

Enlarge / Horizon: Zero Dawn probably won’t be the last game Sony ports from a PlayStation platform to PC.

Horizon: Zero Dawn probably won’t be the last former PlayStation exclusive to make the jump to PC. In its 2020 corporate report published late last week, Sony says that it “will explore expanding our 1st party titles to the PC platform, in order to promote further growth in our profitability.”

The “explore” wording there is a little bit couched, suggesting that Sony still hasn’t completely made up its mind on the specifics of further PC game publishing. And the report doesn’t go into detail on which games, if any, Sony considers ripe for porting.

And even if Sony does continue publishing on PC, we shouldn’t necessarily expect major PlayStation titles to hit Steam on the same day as the coming PS5. In Horizon‘s case, Sony waited a full 1,256 days between the game’s February, 2017 launch on PS4 and its PC launch earlier this month.

Amazon Wins FAA Approval For Prime Air Drone Delivery Fleet

Amazon received federal approval to operate its fleet of Prime Air delivery drones, a milestone that allows it to expand unmanned package delivery, the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday. From a report: The approval will give Amazon broad privileges to “safely and efficiently deliver packages to customers,” the FAA said. The FAA certification comes under Part 135 of FAA regulations, which gives Amazon the ability to carry property on small drones “beyond the visual line of sight” of the operator. Amazon said it will use the FAA’s certification to begin testing customer deliveries. The company said it went through rigorous training and submitted detailed evidence that its drone delivery operations are safe, including demonstrating the technology for FAA inspectors. “This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and indicates the FAA’s confidence in Amazon’s operating and safety procedures for an autonomous drone delivery service that will one day deliver packages to our customers around the world” David Carbon, vice president of Prime Air, said in a statement. “We will continue to develop and refine our technology to fully integrate delivery drones into the airspace, and work closely with the FAA and other regulators around the world to realize our vision of 30 minute delivery.”

Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' Makes a Global Bet on the Film Industry

In Christopher Nolan’s new thriller, “Tenet,” the fate of humanity pivots on characters moving back and forth through time. It is an epic, brain-bending exploration of ideas the filmmaker has spent decades examining. But now, as “Tenet” opens after multiple delays in cinemas around the world, it comes loaded with symbolism that its writer and director could never have foreseen. From a report: As the first big-budget theatrical release since Covid-19 struck, “Tenet” represents one of the biggest gambles in Hollywood history — from the studio wagering it can release the movie amid the pandemic, to long-dormant theater chains banking on it spurring a recovery for their business, to potential ticket buyers balancing safety concerns with their urge to get back to the big screen. Mr. Nolan, though known as a champion of the theatrical experience, is somewhat uneasy with all the significance assigned to his sci-fi spy picture. “This is the most radical shift in my career, my lifetime, between the making of a film and the world it goes out into, and I’m still grappling with that,” he says.

Starting with an Aug. 26 opening in parts of Europe and elsewhere, the rollout of “Tenet” reaches the U.S. Sept. 3. It is the fourth domestic release date for the movie — which was delayed repeatedly as studio and theater executives dealt with shifting lockdown measures — yet it is still unclear when it will open in regions where indoor theaters remain closed. That includes two cities that are normally first to get new movies, New York City and Los Angeles. When coronavirus lockdowns descended in March, Mr. Nolan says, his team’s first challenge was to use remote methods to put the final touches on “Tenet” and turn it in on time to AT&T’s Warner Bros. studio. Meanwhile, every big movie on deck for the season, starting with the James Bond installment “No Time To Die,” retreated on the calendar to fall or next year. By contrast, Warner Bros. pushed back the July 17 release of “Tenet” by only two weeks, and later pushed it again. The studio never seriously considered an online premiere for “Tenet,” a Warner Bros. executive says, even as others experimented with online releases, as Disney has done this summer with “Hamilton” and “Mulan.” The movie enjoyed a strong $53 million debut overseas. “We are off to a fantastic start internationally and couldn’t be more pleased,” said Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman. “Christopher Nolan has once again delivered an event-worthy motion picture that demands to be seen on the big screen, and we are thrilled that audiences across the globe are getting the opportunity to see ‘Tenet.'”

What's Coming to Netflix the Week of August 30, 2020

Would you leave your family for three years to go on a mission to Mars? Normally that would be an easy no, but I haven’t been alone since March 11, so the prospect sounds… slightly attractive. A 3-year-old girl lifted super high into the air by a kite

3-year-old-kite-air.jpg

This is an insane video of a 3-year-old girl being lifted into the air after getting tangled in some kite strings at a kite festival in Taiwan:

Footage shows a girl, 3, in Taiwan being lifted high into the air after becoming entangled in the strings of a kite. The unidentified girl was taking part in a kite festival on Sunday in the seaside town of Nanliao when she was hoisted several metres into the air by the giant, long-tailed orange kite. News reports said the girl was frightened but suffered no physical injuries in the incident.

The footage is so crazy it looks fake. Like it’s behind-the-scenes footage of a live-action Up adaptation or something. The only way it could look more cartoony is if when people tried to hold her down they each got picked up as well, until some really fat person in the crowd finally managed to grab a hold and anchor it down. Now I kind of wish that happened.

Keep going for the full video. Nobody gets hurt, but it’s still a little disturbing seeing a little girl fly through the air like that.
