LibreOffice 6.0 Released: Features Superior Microsoft Office Interoperability, OpenPGP Support

prisoninmate writes: LibreOffice 6.0 comes two and a half years after the LibreOffice 5.x series, and it’s the biggest release of the open-source and cross-platform office suite so far. It introduces a revamped design with new table styles, improved Notebookbars, new gradients, new Elementary icons, menu and toolbar improvements, and updated motif/splash screen. LibreOffice 6.0 offers superior interoperability with Microsoft Office documents and compatibility with the EPUB3 format by allowing users to export ODT files to EPUB3. It also lets you import your AbiWord, Microsoft Publisher, PageMaker, and QuarkXPress documents and templates thanks to the implementation of a set of new open-source libraries contributed by the Document Liberation project. Many great improvements were made to the OOXML and ODF filters, as well as in the EMF+, Adobe Freehand, Microsoft Visio, Adobe Pagemaker, FictionBook, Apple Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, as well as Quattro Pro import functionality, and to the XHTML export. LibreOffice Online received numerous improvements as well in this major release of LibreOffice.

Intel OpenGL/Vulkan Performance Edging Slightly Higher With Mesa 18.0

Yesterday I posted some initial benchmarks of Mesa 18.0 on RADV/RadeonSI drivers for AMD GPUs now that feature development is over for this next quarterly installment of Mesa 3D. On the Radeon side there were mostly performance improvements to note with the RADV Vulkan driver, but what about on the Intel side? Today are benchmarks of the Intel i965 OpenGL and ANV Vulkan drivers compared to earlier Mesa releases for seeing how the Intel (U)HD Graphics performance has changed on the Linux desktop.

Google’s Flights App Now Uses AI Machine Learning To Predict Flight Delays

Google’s Flights App Now Uses AI Machine Learning To Predict Flight Delays
We’ve all been there; we get to the airport well in advance, check our bags, [hopefully] sail through the security screening process, and arrive our gate only to find that the flight has been delayed at the last minute. Sometimes it’s an annoyance, but other times a cascading level of delays can cause some major headaches for your travel plans.

Apple: We Would Never Degrade the iPhone Experience To Get Users To Buy New Phones

Apple today responded to reports that the Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission are probing its decision to throttle older iPhones, confirming that the U.S government has asked questions. From a report: Apple said it would never intentionally “degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades.” Apple acknowledged in December that it was secretly slowing the speeds of iPhones in an effort to help preserve aging batteries. In response to consumer backlash, the company dropped the price of battery replacements for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus from $79 to $29.

Cisco VPN Bug Rates 10 Out of 10

If you are a system admin and use Cisco’s ASA OS for network security devices, well, there is an upcoming security issue with your security and you likely need to secure it this week, because the exploit goes public this weekend. This exploit will be attached to the Cisco WEBVPN feature and if exploited can give the attacker full control of the system. If you have any ASA or Firepower products, you need to get your ducks in line now and the bug applies to FTD 6.22. An thankfully there is a quick check you can run to determine if you have the issue with your system. Thanks to Monkey34 for the heads up!

This vulnerability affects devices that are running a vulnerable release of Cisco ASA Software where the webvpn feature is enabled. In addition to webvpn being globally configured there must be one enabled interface via the enable in the configuration. To determine whether webvpn is enabled for at least one interface, administrators can use the show running-config webvpn command at the CLI and verify that the command returns at least one enable line.

Hey! You POS!

I have to admit, I have grown fond of the voice assistant on my Pixel 2 XL phone over the last several months. It has become somewhat of a game around my house with the wife and kids to see what I can actually get the phone to do while it is still in my pocket….because hey, no phones at the dinner table. Anyway, the “OK Google,” hotwords to activate it somewhat emasculating however. Not really sure why, just makes me feel like a wuss. So, then Android added, “Hey Google,” which I have to admit is a whole not better. But if what 9 to 5 Google is reporting is true, the Google Assistant phone game is about to a lot more fun while out in public. Hey! You POS! We can dream can’t we.

Last month, Assistant on phones added support for the “Hey Google” command found on smart speakers to complement the existing “Ok Google” hotword. Now, the Google app is prepping support for custom hotwords. (In the strings below, “%1$s refers to a placeholder for either upcoming text or a user-defined phrase.)
