SilverStone SX700-LPT 700W SFX-L Power Supply Review

SilverStone has a new take on small form factor power supplies it is calling “SFX-L.” This new form factor extends the standard SFX size by 30mm allowing SilverStone to install a quieter 120mm fan than the usual higher speed and noisier 80mm and 92mm fans. How does all this work out?

Epic Games Forums Hacked, Again

An anonymous reader writes: Epic Games, maker of popular games such as Unreal and Infinity Blade, announced today that its forums have been hacked. Now, if you don’t reuse password that isn’t a huge deal. But if you have used the same password on any service, perhaps even a variation of that password, you will want to ensure that you have changed password of all your accounts. In the meanwhile, here’s Epic Games: “We believe a recent Unreal Engine and Unreal Tournament forum compromise revealed email addresses and other data entered into the forums, but no passwords in any form, neither salted, hashed, nor plaintext. While the data contained in the vBulletin account databases for these forums were leaked, the passwords for user accounts are stored elsewhere. These forums remain online and no passwords need to be reset”, says Epic Games.ZDNet is reporting that thousands of passwords have been stolen.

Why Drums Only Sound as Good as the Room They’re In

I’ve spent a fair bit of time in the company of drummers, and every last one has been a little bit weird. That level of independent limb coordination must do something to your neural circuitry. Some of them hide their strangeness… unless they get to talking about “room tone.” Then they start describing sounds as boomy or dry or slappy and the secret is out.

Google begins posting Nexus images for the Android 7.0 Nougat update

Enlarge / If you’re impatient and your Nexus phone or tablet isn’t already downloading Nougat, these files can help you out. (credit: Ron Amadeo)

Google released the final version of Android 7.0 Nougat yesterday after months of public beta testing, and people with supported Nexus phones and tablets should all be able to download it soon. But Google favors a staggered rollout for its updates so it can find and squash early bugs, and it may be several days before your phone or tablet actually offers to download and install the update for you.

Impatient early adopters have a couple of options. You can download full system images that require you to wipe your device when you install them, or OTA update files that can patch the operating system in place without data loss (the official OTA option is relatively new, and this is the first time Google has offered these downloads for a major update directly).

Both methods require the use of the command line adb and fastboot tools and a little bit of knowhow, and you can follow the directions on those pages if you would like to give it a try. As of this writing, only the Pixel C, Wi-Fi Nexus 9, and Nexus Player files have been posted, but we’ll link all the images below as they post for your convenience. These are coming directly from Google’s servers, the same as they would if you were using the pages above.

Scientists Just Found Signs of Supernovae on the Sea Floor

Is it possible to find trace evidence of supernovae from millions of years ago in the sediment lining the ocean floor? One astrophysicist has spent the better part of a decade trying to find the proverbial smoking gun to prove that it is. And now, it seems, he has succeeded.

A Superstitious Fisherman Kept This $100 Million Pearl Under His Bed

According to city government officials in Puerto Princesa City, Philippines, a local fisher just dropped off this monster of a pearl to a local tourism office. If legit, it would far surpass the current Guinness record holder, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, at a comparatively measly 14 pounds, which also came from the Philippines.

Internaut Day Might Not Be the Web Anniversary You're Looking For

David Meyer, reporting for Fortune: The web arguably went public before August 23, 1991. Social media users are enthusiastically celebrating “Internaut Day” on Tuesday. They’re thanking Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, for first providing public access to it on this day in 1991, precisely a quarter of a century back. The only problem is that the supposed importance of Internaut Day doesn’t seem to be supported by much evidence. Berners-Lee submitted his seminal proposal for a new information management system to CERN on March 12, 1989, a date which Berners-Lee celebrates as the birthday of the web. The building blocks were specified and written up by October 1990, and the first webpage went live in December that year. So when somebody celebrates the “Internaut Day” today, it really doesn’t seem like the right occasion. The report adds: According to Wikipedia, that’s when “new users could [first] access” the web — and that’s what a gazillion news stories on Tuesday are supposedly celebrating. But it doesn’t square with what the Web Foundation and CERN say.

Get Under the Hood of Parker, NVIDIA's Newest SOC for Autonomous Vehicles

NVIDIA today took the cloak off Parker, our newest mobile processor that will power the next generation of autonomous vehicles. Speaking at the Hot Chips conference in Cupertino, California, we revealed the architecture and underlying technology of this highly advanced processor, which is ideally suited for automotive applications like self-driving cars and digital cockpits.

You may recall we mentioned Parker at CES earlier this year, when we introduced the NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 platform (shown above). That platform uses two Parker processors and two Pascal architecture-based GPUs to power deep learning applications. More than 80 carmakers, tier 1 suppliers and university research centers around the world are now using our DRIVE PX 2 system to develop autonomous vehicles. This includes Volvo, which plans to road test DRIVE PX 2 systems in XC90 SUVs next year.
