Flexibility

Laptops come in distinct size classes that can better fit how your needs may change during the day. Over a decade ago, there were automotive paint shops that did a decent business custom painting desktop and laptop PCs. But by using adhesives, OEMS made it harder to take laptops apart so they could be custom painted. Companies like Toast came in to fill the gap with laptop wraps. But a modular design makes it far easier to custom paint laptop cases so you could have the image you like on your laptop, be it your company’s logo, your favorite sports team, performing artist, superhero, or fantasy character (I used to do dragons). And you can have the case repainted as the finish ages to keep the product looking new long after wear and tear would make the case look old. And, finally, it would enable third-party case designs that use unique materials like automotive carbon fiber, titanium, or even precious metals as your taste and finances allow. And, with the obvious exception of precious metals, those mods will make it less likely your laptop will be easily stolen because it would be unique and less interesting to the market at large.

Rise bars are the most common ones, and as the name suggests, the bar rises from the center to the tips. 

You will have two choices in sweep designs. One is upsweep, and the other one is backsweep. Upsweep bars swing up from the center to the bar ends. The upsweep design offers better wrist rotation and control. Backsweep bars swing back and bring the end of the bars back to you but offer lesser room for wrist rotation.

Choosing the right handlebar is more tricky than you might have thought. It’s best to figure out your terrain, and riding style and then decide which handlebar to go for. Lastly, make sure your handlebars can be mounted with multiple items, such as a bike computer, a bike light, and a bell.

4. Sturdy Mountain Bike Helmet

Safety is a must when you are off to the wilderness. You can choose between half-shell and full-face helmet protection. When choosing the right helmets, look out for the following things-

• Protection

Make sure the helmet covers the back and sides of your head. The more coverage, the better. Also, check if they have a rotational impact protection system. The most trustworthy systems are 100% Smartshock, MIPS, Kali’s LDL, POC’s Spin, Leatt’s 360 Turbine, and 6D’s ODS

• Snug fit

Helmets should have large ports on the outer side to allow air to flow inwards. Some even have air channels that allow air to flow directly over your head. Surprisingly the amount of ventilation is not related to the number of openings or ports. Instead, it depends on the design.  

5. Protective Eyewear

If you are using a half-shell helmet, you will need something to protect your eyes. Hilly terrains will have dust and debris that can harm your eyes. If you are using eyewear that is designed like sunglasses, then make sure it has non-slip grips and UV protection changeable lenses. 

6. Hip-pack

Hip packs are great for carrying the absolutely necessary things you will need for your travels. They are small but have enough room to store important things such as your mini bike pump, utility items, tools, etc. 

The packs should have adjustable straps so you can fit them accordingly; you need to have a snug fit but provide enough room for breathability. 

7. Multitool

Modern multitools for mountain bikes are small in size, lightweight, and portable but offer a range of tools for emergency repairs. Some multi-tools are very small. Yes, the smaller, the better, but if it’s too small, it can be difficult to operate. 

Grab one that is medium in size and has tools of length you can use comfortably. Also, check if it has a chain tool. You may not need a chain tool often, but when you do, you will be thankful because chain repairs out in the wilderness can be difficult without the right tools.

The old saying that every cloud has a silver lining is being showcased in the war in Ukraine. Last week at BlackBerry’s annual security conference, one of the leaders of Ukraine’s cyber defense, Victor Zhora, pointed out in great detail what being on the receiving end of state-sponsored cyber-attacks in a war setting is like. It is unlike anything we are currently prepared for in the rest of the world. 

The work that BlackBerry and thousands of other coordinated cyber security analysts (BlackBerry has around 1,000 of its own folks working on this) are doing provides the company with unmatched experience and makes it the best security solution for companies and countries that want to be prepared if one of the hostile states (including China and North Korea) put them in their crosshairs. 

Let’s talk about the benefits that security researchers, and particularly BlackBerry, get from helping Ukraine because it goes beyond just doing the right thing. It makes BlackBerry the world power for battlefield-tested cyber defense.

Let’s talk this week about why BlackBerry’s solutions are advancing thanks to its work in Ukraine.

Cylance AI

BlackBerry’s focused security efforts come from its Cylance acquisition. Cylance is one of the first of a growing number of security solution providers that use AI to get ahead of cyber threats. A combination of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL), the solution looks for behavior that indicates someone or something has been compromised and moves at machine speeds to isolate and mitigate the threat.  

In DL mode, AI trains itself. Massive data sets are required for the training which is why DL solutions often don’t meet expectations. But a war with one or more countries (I expect North Korea, China and Iran either are or will assist Russia in its Malware efforts) provides Cylance AI with an unprecedented amount of data on how state-level attacks are created, delivered, and executed. This massive amount of information is undoubtedly turning Cylance’s AI into one that is uniquely capable of handling state-level attacks which are generally way outside the scope of most cybersecurity solutions. 

This benefit has a long tail since this training data can be passed on generationally and will continue to help Cylance advance its AI long after the war in Ukraine is over. If you want a defense against any attack, no matter how well funded, this war-trained solution should significantly outperform anything that didn’t get that same level of training.  

Collaboration and Law Enforcement

One of the biggest problems with state-level attacks is that, short of war, bringing the attacking party to justice is nearly impossible. But this war has connected defending states and the entire cyber defense industry, unlike any other event I’ve ever seen. Being in the middle of it, BlackBerry should have a deeper understanding of just what a company can do to go after an attacker that has harmed their companies. While this capability against Russian attackers will initially be limited by the war, once peace is negotiated, they will be in an ideal position to assure that those in Russia still behaving badly can be brought to justice, and the mechanisms that have been created as a result of this conflict can effectively be used to strike back at attackers from other hostile states. 

This should make bad players think twice about attacking BlackBerry accounts in the first place because no one wants the downside of being punished for this behavior. Simply finding out that the firm is defended by BlackBerry should, once this capability is demonstrated, cause them to choose a different target.  

BlackBerry AtHoc

One of the most underappreciated solutions that BlackBerry has is its AtHoc offering. AtHoc is targeted at providing command and control capability across an organization or country during a disaster. I’m a big believer in this because, during a disaster, most of the avoidable deaths and injuries are to people who run into areas of high risk rather than out of them.

This requires a working communication system, and once that reliable communication system was established, the BlackBerry messaging network became the critical go-to during the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. 

I expect this conflict will again showcase that the world needs a more reliable communications network that can remain viable during a major catastrophe or war. The increasing use of satellite connectivity options being highlighted by Apple and Starlink could provide, once widely available and coupled with AtHoc, a level of safety and coordination during a disaster or a war that may save your or my life in the future. 

Wrapping Up:

BlackBerry has put a ton of resources into helping Ukraine since early in the conflict. As an unintended award, BlackBerry is receiving an unprecedented amount of learning that enables it to advance its capabilities at a level rarely seen outside of a war. These advancements will not only make BlackBerry’s anti-Malware offerings far more effective, it will create an effective warning to attackers that the risks of attacking a BlackBerry account will be unacceptably high. In addition, BlackBerry’s AtHoc product, when coupled with the coming wave of satellite-connected phones, could assure that you and I are far safer in the future if our governments step up the risks of war and climate change which will likely define our future lives.  

In the end, the lesson here is that there is often a huge benefit to doing the right thing. I hope other firms learn from BlackBerry and step in to help countries in trouble to both punish aggressors and make us all, eventually, safer over time.

Earlier this month I met with my old friend Phil McKinney who I met at HP and is now running CableLabs. CableLabs has just finished a competition on what companies would do with the massive coming increases in bandwidth. This reminded me a bit of the early days of the PC market where people were struggling with both the performance they had and what to do with the performance they were going to get in the future. There were a considerable number of folks arguing that there was no way we’d be able to use performance that would have been inadequate in today’s Smartphones, let alone today’s PCs. 

This goes a long way to saying that before a level of performance is available, it is extremely hard to determine how that performance will be used, but when that performance is available, people find a way to use it. You can check out the winners here, but they tend to fall into two major categories: solutions that need a consistently high bandwidth link because of what they are doing real-time (autonomous technology), and things that need both very high resolution and very low latency (healthcare and related technology). 

Let’s explore our high bandwidth future this week. 

Healthcare

The big problem with healthcare is staffing. It’s a nasty problem with a variety of increasingly complex elements that range from the changing laws surrounding healthcare (abortion restrictions are an example) which must be managed both consistently and in the least disruptive way for patents, to the lack of key experts where they are needed and an overall shortage of employees.

Solutions to these problems range from remote training that enables providers to better address staffing shortages, to enhanced telemedicine that allows a remote expert to be anyplace in the world they need to be digital, to AI-based interfaces into practices that can help individual healthcare facilities navigate the nasty changes in laws and patients’ rights while providing legal help and advice when the patient’s health has been compromised by that legal quagmire. (This last was not highlighted by the competition winners but would be enhanced by higher bandwidth capabilities). 

Farming

Farming is generally considered to be relatively low-tech, but much of the autonomous technology is finding its way into the market both because so much of what farmers do is repetitive and lends itself to robotics. But some of the newest weed and pest mitigation technologies that avoid pesticides and herbicides to better protect the environment require a massive amount of AI capability for selective targeting and a far more ubiquitous connection to remote resources to mitigate downtime and assure the related hardware will work in the narrow windows when it must operate. 

But farms are not set up to install data centers which makes them low-hanging fruit for some form of cloud service but with unusually high data requirements so that localized issues, like the potential intrusion of an invasive plant or insect, can be identified and addressed before the crops are catastrophically damaged. 

Farms are quickly moving from some of the least technologically advanced verticals to some of the most as water shortages, climate change and staffing issues are working to catastrophically damage their operations and, in some areas, even their viability. 

As a result, in the future, we may wake up to find that farms, far from being the least technologically advanced, may lead to applied technologies like remote viewing and artificial intelligence that are enhanced by the next wave of increased bandwidth and reduced latency.

Yevgeny Prigozhin has been touring Russian prisons in an increasingly desperate bid to recruit more soldiers to send into Ukraine.

The Wagner supremo is now accused of using “pressure” to recruit raped and abused prisoners from Russia’s penal colonies to join the mercenary group’s frontline fighting units where they are being slaughtered with little training and poor equipment.

Russian prison observers said that ‘The Shamed’ are being recruited by Wagner—Putin’s private army—as cannon-fodder who rarely survive long in “Prigozhin’s meat grinder.” In an audio message, a convict in the IK-7 prison colony in Novgorod says his recruited friends were “thrown into the battle” after just one week of training.

Both prison administrators and other convicts use the label to sexually abuse or urinate on weaker prisoners, who are made to tackle the worst jobs like cleaning the toilets and are treated as though they are contagious outcasts.

“Prisoners in the Wagner mercenary army have no chance to survive, ‘The Shamed’ are dying as if they are pushed through a meat grinder,” says Olga Romanova, the founder of the Russia Behind Bars group of independent prison observers.

According to Russia Behind the Bars, Prigohin has recruited over 6,000 prisoners to fight in Ukraine promising them amnesty and a monthly salary from $1,500 to $3,000 a month.
