We often talk about the competition between AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, and NVIDIA, but a new threat has emerged that potentially puts some of these companies at risk. That is the threat represented by major cloud providers to develop and use their custom-designed processors instead of buying them from specialty firms.  

It seemed that the most vigorous defender of the model was not Intel or NVIDIA but AMD because of its specialized customer processor development unit that has been effective at capturing two of the three major gaming platforms.  

Sure enough, that was confirmed this week when Meta, formally known as Facebook, partnered with AMD to develop its new processor.  While much of the coverage is on how AMD has captured a quarter of the data center market, the more important news is that this is a massive pushback against the build-it-yourself trend, which puts the very nature of the market at risk.  

Seeing the bigger threat

One of the downsides of tight competition is that competing vendors can over-focus on their competitors, causing them to miss broader trends that are far more dangerous.  I first saw this in play when working in IBM’s Telephony division. We were focused hard on a competitor’s line, Northern Telecom, blinding us to the fact that folks weren’t replacing their PBXs. Without a replacement cycle, the market was about to collapse catastrophically. Even when some of us saw and flagged the risk, operational management remained focused on the more obvious battle, refusing to acknowledge that a significant threat was about to end our market.  

The pandemic has sped up the shift to the cloud, putting on-premise hardware at risk of becoming obsolete.  But cloud providers would need to ramp up their services to pick up the load. However, the major cloud providers decided they wanted something designed for them rather than processor companies. Intel, the dominant player in the space, was struggling with internal changes. By policy, Intel, at the time, didn’t believe it had to develop a custom chip architecture. That’s changing under Pat Gelsinger, but the effort started late, given that Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are doing their chip development.  

But AMD had already spun up its custom processor business and was ready to step in. AMD isn’t moving competitively against Intel since Intel wasn’t in the hunt; however, it provides a solid counterpoint to doing it alone. AMD brings to the table decades of competitive testing, compliance understanding, and a long-term heavy focus on security.  These strengths are what any cloud processor should have, and AMD already has them in its portfolio.  

Another advantage of working with a firm like AMD is that it understands fabrication and has existing priority relationships with several fab companies.  Altogether, these benefits should make working with AMD the better, faster, cheaper choice than working alone.  And this Facebook deal helps drive peers to do similar custom work, potentially eliminating the processor market’s long-term threat.  

So, in this instance, AMD, rather than being a threat to Intel or NVIDIA, is helping change the market to safer and potentially more lucrative in the long term for all three vendors.  These large-scale customers increasingly want custom parts, and the best place to have the work done is by experienced companies.  AMD and Facebook just reminded everyone of this dynamic, potentially making the market more lucrative for all.

Castle Creek Biosciences, Inc., founded by Jeff Aronin, recently announced a research collaboration with Mayo Clinic to advance discovery and pre-clinical development of investigational gene therapy candidates for the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), which are rare genetic connective tissue disorders that currently have no treatments approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The research will be led by principal investigator David R. Deyle, M.D., a board-certified medical geneticist with the department of medical genetics at Mayo Clinic and a leader in the field of connective tissue disorders. 

Osteogenesis imperfecta is colloquially called brittle bone disease because it can lead to soft, fragile bones which are prone to breaking. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impacts the body’s ability to generate connective tissue. People with osteogenesis have a disruption in the production of collagen that prevents the formation of connective tissue. Collagen is the primary component of connective tissues, including bones and skin. 

EDS is also a genetic disease that affects connective tissue. People with EDS have especially elastic skin and hyperflexible joints. They can also experience chronic pain and problems with their blood vessels. Like osteogenesis imperfecta, EDS is caused by genetic mutations affecting collagen synthesis. 

Osteogenesis imperfecta affects about one in 6,600 people, while EDS affects one in 20,000. Neither disease has any currently FDA-approved treatments. Castle Creek is pursuing potential gene therapy candidates for these conditions.

Gene therapy is an emerging medical treatment that aims to modify genes to ameliorate or cure a condition. They are often targeted at genetic disorders by introducing a healthy gene variant into a patients’ body to correct the dysfunction. Gene therapies are promising for their ability to address the root cause of a disease. 

The research collaboration with Mayo Clinic brings David R. Deyle, M.D., board-certified geneticist, as principal investigator. Dr. Deyle brings expertise in the field of genetics as well as connective tissue disorders. The research will focus on the discovery and pre-clinical phases of research. 

The research collaboration will help identify gene therapy candidates for osteogenesis imperfecta and EDS. Once candidates have been identified, Castle Creek anticipates moving the selected therapies into clinical development at its in-house, commercial-scale current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) manufacturing facility located in Exton, Pa.

The New York-based accelerator Fuelarts held its first Demo Day to introduce its latest cohort and discuss the Art+Tech market investment potential.

Two startups, Artherium, an NFT inventory app, and Sarturn, a GameFi platform for Gen Z art investors, were awarded surprise kickstart grants from Fuelarts, amounting to $50,000 each. Another company from the first cohort, digital marketplace V-Art, raised $150K earlier this year. Four startups were handpicked for Fuelarts’ first virtual batch.

The accelerator’s mission is to bridge the gap between art and technology by supporting early-stage startups. Fuelarts was launched by former COO of Christie’s Americas, ex-Senior VP of artnet.com, and adjunct faculty member of Sotheby’s Institute of Art Roxanna Zarnegar, and serial Art+Tech entrepreneur, Sotheby’s Institute graduate, and art economist Denis Belkevich. The accelerator raised $500K from philanthropic funders in September. 

According to Fuelarts founder and CEO Denis Belkevich, during the pandemic top auction houses and dealers turned their attention to the burgeoning tech sector. “One prime example happened recently when Sotheby’s invested $20 million in Mojito to create a metaverse destination for NFTs,” he added. “With art market players getting involved too, we’re seeing a lot of excitement around Art+Tech from institutional investors and the VC world.” 

Katya Kohen, the managing partner at Amadeo Global VC fund and Fuelarts investment partner, believes the Art+Tech market has the potential to bring a substantial return on those investments. “Historically, traditional art would only generate 3-5 percent IIR (internal rate of return). But for Art+Tech startups like the ones Fuelarts presented today, we’re looking at a return above 25 percent,” said Kohen. 

By late next year, the Fuelarts accelerator intends to become a company-builder VC, which would help startups adapt their business models to shifting market demands. “I think starting about seven years ago, and until now, Art+Tech took the lens and zoomed out away from building marketplaces, looking instead into all the other different facets,” said Roxanna Zarnegar, Fuelarts’ co-founder and board member. She believes subsidiary businesses, such as smart contracts, offer the biggest opportunities for Art+Tech investors and entrepreneurs alike. 

As a part of its mission, in January next year, Fuelarts will be issuing a report focusing on challenges and opportunities in the Art+Tech market. The document will include an analysis of already existing startups, current funding opportunities, forecasts for the coming year, and interviews with industry leaders. Dates for the next batch of Fuelarts applications will be announced later this year.

Cellphones belonging to at least six Palestinian rights activists were hacked using the contentious Israeli cyber-surveillance firm NSO Group’s Pegasus software, according to independent investigations published Monday.

The report did not specify who was behind the alleged hacking, but NSO’s export license prohibits the firm from allowing foreign customers to hack Israeli phones.

Allegations came amid international criticism of Israel after the Defense Ministry and the military outlawed six rights groups, accusing them of acting as front for the Liberation of Palestine terror group, which the organizations have denied.

NSO has “implicitly acknowledged that this methodology” correctly identifies that a phone has been breached with its software, the report said.

In response to the allegations, an NSO spokesperson said that “contractual and national security considerations” prevented them from revealing the identity of their clients.

Three of the hacked phones belonged to members of three of these groups. The other three activists declined to be identified by name. The allegations came from groups that were declared terrorist organizations by Israel last month.

A couple of years ago, the United States Government Accountability Office released a report revealing that hackers can break into US weapon systems with minimal time required. “In one case, it took a two-person test team just one hour to gain initial access to a weapon system and one day to gain full control of the system they were testing,” the report wrote.

Unfortunately, this alarming revelation failed to get the response it deserved. Government institutions and private organizations have not exerted the extra effort and investment to improve their cybersecurity posture. Some continue to be cavalier with the way they defend against cyber attacks.

Recent high-profile incidents such as the SolarWinds, Colonial Pipeline, CNA Insurance, and the Florida Water Supply attacks prove that vulnerabilities can exist in all kinds of organizations and cybercriminals are hell-bent on taking advantage of these. In some cases, the attacks take a long time but in others, successful penetration of cyber defenses can happen in less than an hour.

Successful cyberattacks in under an hour

A newly identified cybercrime group called SnapMC was reported in early October to pose an alarming threat to organizations worldwide. This group is said to be capable of rapid extortion attacks without using any ransomware. The full attack cycle can be completed in thirty minutes or less.

The attack takes advantage of vulnerabilities in unpatched VPNs and web server apps. As Threat Post describes it, victims fall prey to a “quick-hit extortion in less time than it takes to order a pizza.” The breach allows the attacker to steal sensitive data and demand a ransom in exchange for not publicizing the critical information. Blatantly straightforward extortion, this low-tech attack works because many organizations still do not pay that much attention to strengthening their cybersecurity.

It is important to highlight the duration of the consummation of the attack because it shows that even organizations with “decent” cybersecurity posture, including security validation, can still end up falling for these rapid extortion attacks. The best way to deal with these risks is to make sure that the right security controls are in place and that they are tested continuously. Continuous security validation is vital to a reliable security posture as it ensures that vulnerabilities are spotted and addressed before they are exploited.

As mentioned, the SnapMC group exploits vulnerabilities in webserver and VPN applications, which are quite commonplace nowadays. Organizations that validate their security controls only periodically or every once in a while will inevitably have periods of vulnerability. These periods could be a day, a week, or even months since security testing is not continuous, so organizations are unaware if they are already having cracks in their defenses.

The human factor in security weakness

Security weaknesses are often considered the biggest factor in persistent cybersecurity weaknesses. Experienced cybersecurity expert Mus Huseyin says that the biggest threat to cybersecurity lies within the company: people. This point is virtually impossible to contradict. Almost all cases of successful cyber attacks can be traced to carelessness, the error of omission, naivete, and other weaknesses of the people responsible for the cybersecurity posture of an organization.

A recent study about passwords by Safety.com suggests that passwords could be hacked in under an hour. This is because most computer or web-enabled device owners do not take password setting and account protection seriously.

According to the study, 67.3 percent use passwords that are eight characters long or fewer. People in the 25 to 55 age bracket, or those who use digital devices and the internet most often, are the ones who tend to use the shortest passwords. Short passwords are unsurprisingly easier to predict, especially when they are not random and composed of combinations of alphanumeric characters with different cases and symbols.

Additionally, many still refuse to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) in securing their accounts. At some point, around 90 percent of Gmail users still failed to take advantage of MFA, which has compelled Google to make it compulsory. Twitter users are also known to be unbothered by multi-factor authentication. 

When it comes to enterprises, the tendency to use weak passwords, ignore MFA and wittingly or unwittingly commit human-centered security weaknesses mistakes. That’s why many companies now have cybersecurity orientation or training programs. Employees are being considered as vital players in the effectiveness of an organization’s security posture, so they are equipped with the right knowledge and skills, so at the very least they do not become part of the problem.

The importance and challenges of continuous security testing

No matter how small the window of opportunity for an attack is, relentless cybercriminals will stop at nothing to make the most out of it and land a successful assault. The good thing is that cybersecurity professionals and organizations are now working together to concertedly broaden threat visibility and share the most up-to-date information to as many users as possible to help in promptly and effectively detecting, mitigating, remediating, and preventing cyber attacks.

The globally accessible cyber threat tactics and techniques knowledge base MITRE ATT&CK, in particular, is helping organizations in dealing with the ever-evolving and worsening cyber threats at present. Many incorporate the MITRE ATT&CK framework in their cybersecurity management systems as well as the security posture management platforms provided by third parties.

Fortnite has stopped accepting registrations for new players and was no longer available for download as of Monday.

Its servers will be shut down November 15, meaning players will no longer be able to log into the game.

The blockbuster multiplayer battle title, developed by Epic Games, was launched in China in July 2018 in partnership with Tencent. The game had more than 350 million registered players as of May 2020, according to Epic Games.

Tencent declined to comment when asked for more details about the Chinese version of the title and the reason for shutting it down.

In August, China barred online gamers under the age of 18 from playing on weekdays and limited their play to just three hours most weekends, state-run news agency Xinhua reported. In September, authorities had called in Tencent, NetEase and other companies to discuss restrictions around the streaming and playing of video games among minors.
