South Dakota bans TikTok from government-owned devices
Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, has signed an executive order prohibiting government employees, agencies and contractors from downloading and using TikTok on state-owned devices. In her office’s announcement, Noem said she issued the order due to growing security concerns that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been using the social media app to gather information from American users and leveraging it to manipulate them. The order is already in effect and also prohibits government personnel from visiting the TikTok website on browsers.
“South Dakota will have no part in the intelligence gathering operations of nations who hate us,” Noem said. “The Chinese Communist Party uses information that it gathers on TikTok to manipulate the American people, and they gather data off the devices that access the platform.”
US officials have been raising security concerns about TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, over the past few years over the belief that the Chinese government is using it to gather data. In 2020, then-President Trump attempted to block TikTok and WeChat in the US. While that didn’t quite go anywhere, nearly the entire US military had banned the app on government-issued devices, calling TikTok a “cybersecurity threat.” A couple of Republican Senators also introduced a bill in the same year that would ban all government employees from using TikTok on work-issued smartphones.
More recently, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr asked Apple and Google to remove the app from their stores after a BuzzFeed News report came out that China-based ByteDance employees repeatedly accessed US users’ private information. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew assured Republican Senators in a letter after the report came out that the company is working with Oracle to protect the data of its users in the US “with robust, independent oversight.” He also said that TikTok is working towards fully pivoting to Oracle cloud servers in the US to be able to delete US users’ data from its own systems.
But Chew’s assurances weren’t enough to assuage officials’ fears: FBI Director Chris Wray warned US lawmakers earlier this month that the Chinese government could use TikTok to launch “influence operations” through its recommendation algorithm or to “technically compromise” millions of devices. A TikTok spokesperson told Reuters that the “FBI’s input is being considered as part of [the company’s] ongoing negotiations with the US government.” They added that TikTok is confident that it is “on a path to fully satisfy all reasonable US national security concerns” after working with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States over the past few months.

Jiang Zemin, Leader Who Guided China Into Global Market, Dies at 96
Jiang Zemin, the Shanghai Communist kingpin who was handpicked to lead China after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and presided over a decade of meteoric economic growth, died on Wednesday. He was 96. From a report: A Communist Party announcement issued by Chinese state media said he died in Shanghai of leukemia and multiple organ failure. His death and the memorial ceremonies to follow come at a delicate moment in China, where the ruling party is confronting a wave of widespread protests against its pandemic controls, a nationwide surge of political opposition unseen since the Tiananmen movement of Mr. Jiang’s time.
Mr. Jiang was president of China for a decade from 1993. In the eyes of many foreign politicians, Mr. Jiang was the garrulous, disarming exception to the mold of stiff, unsmiling Chinese leaders. He was the Communist who would quote Lincoln, proclaim his love for Hollywood films and burst into songs like “Love Me Tender.” Less enthralled Chinese called him a “flowerpot,” likening him to a frivolous ornament, and mocking his quirky vanities. In his later years young fans celebrated him, tongue-in-cheek, with the nickname “toad.” But Mr. Jiang’s unexpected rise and quirks led others to underestimate him, and over 13 years as Communist Party general secretary he matured into a wily politician who vanquished a succession of rivals. Mr. Jiang’s stewardship of the capitalist transformation that had begun under Deng Xiaoping was one of his signal accomplishments. He also amassed political influence that endured long past his formal retirement, giving him a big say behind the scenes in picking the current president, Xi Jinping.

768 teams of young people have entered Astro Pi Mission Space Lab 2022/23
This year, 768 teams made up of 3086 young people from 23 countries sent us their ideas for experiments to run on board the International Space Station (ISS) for Astro Pi Mission Space Lab.

Mission Space Lab is part of the European Astro Pi Challenge, an ESA Education programme run in collaboration with us at the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Mission Space Lab teams can choose between ‘Life on Earth’ and ‘Life in space’ for their experiment idea. As in previous years, ‘Life on Earth’ was the most popular experiment theme: three quarters of the teams chose to submit an idea with this theme, for experiments using one of the Astro Pi’s High Quality Cameras. Half of these experiments involved using the near-infrared sensitive camera to investigate topics such as deforestation. Across both themes, over 40% of teams expressed an interest in using machine learning in their experiment.
Mission Space Lab teams are now getting ready to write and test their code
A panel of 25 judges from the Raspberry Pi Foundation and ESA Education assessed the submitted ideas. We are restricted in how many teams we can accommodate, as time to run experiments on board the ISS is limited, especially for ‘Life on Earth’ experiments which need time in a nadir window. The standard of the submitted ideas was higher than ever, making this the toughest judging yet. We are delighted to announce that 486 teams will move on to Phase 2 of Mission Space Lab: writing the code for their experiments.
If your experiment idea was unsuccessful this time, we understand that this will be disappointing news for your team. We encourage them to submit a new experiment idea in next year’s Mission Space Lab. We will let you know when Mission Space Lab 23/24 will be launching.
All the teams whose experiment ideas we’ve selected will receive a special Astro Pi hardware kit, customised to their idea, to help them write and test the Python programs to execute their experiments. Once the teams of young people have received their kits, they can familiarise themselves with the Astro Pi hardware and then create and test (and re-test!) their programs.
Young people’s Mission Space Lab code will run in space next year
The deadline for Mission Space Lab teams to submit the code for their experiments to us is Thursday 24 February 2023. Once their program code has been through our rigorous checks and tests, it will be ready to run on the Astro Pis on board the ISS during April/May 2023.

Congratulations to the successful teams, and thank you to everyone who sent us their ideas for Mission Space Lab this year. And a special thank you to all the teachers, educators, club volunteers, and other wonderful people who are acting as mentors for Mission Space Lab teams. You are helping your young people do something remarkable that they will remember for the rest of their lives, and the Astro Pi Challenge would not happen without you.
Welcome back, Ed and Izzy!
Every year since 2015, thanks to our annual Astro Pi Challenge, teams of young people have written computer programs to run scientific experiments on two Astro Pi computers on the ISS.

This is the second year that experiments will run on the Mark II Astro Pi computers, named after Nikola Tesla and Marie Curie, but lots of people have been wondering what would happen to their predecessors. After running over 50,000 young people’s computer programs, the Mark I Astro Pi computers, Ed and Izzy, have safely returned to Earth for a well-earned rest.
Young people can take part in Astro Pi Mission Zero
Astro Pi Mission Zero is a one-hour beginners’ programming activity. In Mission Zero, young people, in teams or as individuals, write a program to display an image or series of images of their own design on one of the Astro Pi computers, to remind the astronauts on the ISS of home.

In their Mission Zero programs, young people get to use a reading from the Astro Pi’s colour and luminosity sensor to set the colour of their image background. Young people up to age 19 from eligible countries can take part in Mission Zero 2022/23 until 17 March. Visit the Astro Pi website for more details.

OnePlus promises four years of major OS updates for some 2023 phones
OnePlus is joining the ranks of Android vendors committing to longer-term support. The Oppo brand is promising four years of major OxygenOS updates for “selected” phones launching in 2023 and later. They’ll also receive five years of security patches. The company hasn’t named devices, but it won’t be surprising if the company prioritizes higher-end phones like the unofficially expected OnePlus 11 series.
The phone maker also teased some features coming to OxygenOS 13.1 when it ships in the first half of 2023. The new software will include a revised always-on display with Spotify support, AI-guided memory management that boosts performance, Dolby Atmos-based spatial audio (built in tandem with Google and Dolby), a second-gen private data space and a new “Aquamorphic” design language.
The policy puts OnePlus roughly on par with Samsung, which touted four years of Android upgrades and five years of security fixes for flagship phones. Google started delivering five years of security updates starting with the Pixel 6 family, but is only guaranteeing new versions for three years. Apple typically provides five years of major revisions for iPhones and occasionally releases critical security fixes for older models.
The pledge may be worth considering if you’re determined to have the latest software features throughout the practical lifespan of your phone. It’s still common for other Android brands to offer fewer updates, and Motorola even drew criticism for initially planning just one update for the Edge line in 2020. As with Samsung’s approach, though, you can’t expect this longevity across the range — you may have to settle for less if you can only afford a budget model.

Two Minerals Never Before Been Seen On Earth Found Inside 17-Ton Meteorite
Two minerals that have never been seen before on Earth have been discovered inside a massive meteorite in Somalia. They could hold important clues to how asteroids form. Live Science reports: The two brand new minerals were found inside a single 2.5 ounce (70 gram) slice taken from the 16.5 ton (15 metric tons) El Ali meteorite, which was found in 2020. Scientists named the minerals elaliite after the meteor and elkinstantonite after Lindy Elkins-Tanton(opens in new tab), the managing director of the Arizona State University Interplanetary Initiative and principal investigator of NASA’s upcoming Psyche mission, which will send a probe to investigate the mineral-rich Psyche asteroid for evidence of how our solar system’s planets formed.
The researchers classified El Ali as an Iron IAB complex meteorite, a type made of meteoric iron flecked with tiny chunks of silicates. While investigating the meteorite slice, details of the new minerals caught the scientists’ attention. By comparing the minerals with versions of them that had been previously synthesized in a lab, they were able to rapidly identify them as newly recorded in nature. The researchers plan to investigate the meteorites further in order to understand the conditions under which their parent asteroid formed. The team is also looking into material science applications of the minerals. However, future scientific insights from the El Ali meteorite could be in peril. The meteorite has now been moved to China in search of a potential buyer, which could limit researchers’ access to the space rock for investigation. “Whenever you find a new mineral, it means that the actual geological conditions, the chemistry of the rock, was different than what’s been found before,” Chris Herd, a professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta, said in a statement. “That’s what makes this exciting: In this particular meteorite you have two officially described minerals that are new to science.”

How to assess the tracking software while buying a GPS tracker
Whether it be for business or for personal use, it is important that we ensure the smooth user experience and functionalities of the tracking software or app when purchasing a GPS tracker. Difficult-to-use tracking software can be cumbersome to manage, and it makes tracking harder even though you have your tracker installed properly. In this article, we are going to look at some of the defining features of tracking software that you can use as a benchmark for filtering your buying options and easily finding out the precise location data of whatever or whomever you are tracking.
An introduction of GPS tracking software
There are several GPS trackers in the market today. Some are better than others at tracking, and some offer more features too. While checking out the software or app for such trackers, here are some important factors to look for.
It must be intuitive to use. GPS tracking software needs to be user-friendly and must offer an intuitive experience for a smooth and seamless flow. In an emergency, the last thing you want to do is scrape through various menus and click random buttons to get to the exact feature you need. The major features must be easy to access and easy to find.
Another important function that you need to look for while trying out GPS tracking software that comes with a tracker is its connectivity. Even though it also depends on the tracker device, the server, the architecture of the app/software, its response time, live updating of the data, etc., all apps up to make the flawless tracking experience. If any of this fails, the tracking becomes inaccurate, and you won’t be able to locate the tracker in real-time.
Accessibility of the tracking software is yet another major factor that you need to consider while buying a GPS tracker. It means whether you must download it from the Google Play store/Apple store or if you must download it from another website and go through the hassle of installing it indirectly on your phone. The same goes for laptops and computers too. The best-case scenario is a web portal that you can access using a login id and password that ensures protection and accessibility no matter where you are. If you have a stable internet connection, you can easily log on to the tracking app and find out the location of your tracker.
Feature to look for in your GPS tracking app
Once you are sure about the accessibility and usability of your tracking app/software, it’s then time to check out the features. Your tracking software must have certain features other than basic location tracking for it to be truly functional.
Dashboards that allow you to access insights about travel history and other relevant info are very useful while using a GPS tracker. For instance, dashboards that give you information about the amount of time your tracker was moving and how long it was stationary allow you to calculate how much time it was moving. This is very useful when tracking vehicles. Similarly, a real-time speed chart can help you ensure the person carrying your tracker is safe. This is useful to ensure your kids are safe when you send them to school on the school bus. You can easily know if the school bus is speeding over the limit or not.
Another useful feature is real-time alters. Push notifications for mobile apps and email alerts are crucial in getting quick updates when there is anything wrong so you can take immediate action. If the tracker with your child or an asset suddenly leaves the home premises in the middle of the day without any probable cause, you can quickly reach out to emergency service or check up on them to make sure they are safe. Delay in such alerts means you lose valuable time finding them, which can complicate the situation.
There are numerous benefits of using GPS tracking software. However, it is important to check the features and the pricing of the software before you buy one. GPS tracking software is available in a wide range. Some of them might have advanced features, while others might have simple features. Ultimately, it all comes down to what you need and the features that you want. Therefore, you need to choose the tracking software that will suit your needs. If you are looking for the best GPS tracker, you need to ensure these features and properties in the GPS tracking software or application we discussed above.

Chinese Astronauts Board Space Station In Historic Mission
Three Chinese astronauts arrived on Wednesday at China’s space station for the first in-orbit crew rotation in Chinese space history, launching operation of the second inhabited outpost in low-Earth orbit after the NASA-led International Space Station. Reuters reports: The spacecraft Shenzhou-15, or “Divine Vessel”, and its three passengers lifted off atop a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre at 11:08 p.m. (1508 GMT) on Tuesday in sub-freezing temperatures in the Gobi Desert in northwest China, according to state television. Shenzhou-15 was the last of 11 missions, including three previous crewed missions, needed to assemble the “Celestial Palace”, as the multi-module station is known in Chinese. The first mission was launched in April 2021.
The spacecraft docked with the station more than six hours after the launch, and the three Shenzhou-15 astronauts were greeted with warm hugs from the previous Shenzhou crew from whom they were taking over. The Shenzhou-14 crew, who arrived in early June, will return to Earth after a one-week handover that will establish the station’s ability to temporarily sustain six astronauts, another record for China’s space program. The Shenzhou-15 mission offered the nation a rare moment to celebrate, at a time of widespread unhappiness over China’s zero-COVID policies, while its economy cools amid uncertainties at home and abroad.

Military Sim Developer Tired of Its Game Being Used To Fake War Footage
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Motherboard: Bohemia Interactive, the Czech Republic based developer of the military simulator game Arma 3, has published a blog and a video it hopes will help it with a unique problem. Footage from the video game known for its realism has gone viral several times since the game’s release in 2013 as people have tried to pass off clips of the military simulation as footage of real war. This happens a lot, so often that there are multiple debunking stories on Reuters and the Associated Press specifically about debunking viral clips of war footage. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, the problem has gotten much worse. The invasion is the largest ground war in Europe in a generation and people around the world gobble up every scrap of information they can. Pranksters and fraudsters have taken to uploading clips from Arma 3 to capitalize on that need for information.
Arma 3 is a hyper realistic military simulation and sandbox. It’s meant to be a realistic modeling of real world conflict. It’s even teamed up with the International Committee of the Red Cross to release DLC that details the after effects of armed conflict. A sister studio, Bohemia Interactive Simulations, broke from the company in 2013 and makes simulations for the Pentagon using similar technology. The game is also a sandbox with a vibrant modding scene (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds began its life as an Arma 3 mod) that allows players to customize the game however they want. That devotion to realism and open platform has made Arma 3 the perfect platform to use to create fake war footage. “While it’s flattering that Arma 3 simulates modern war conflicts in such a realistic way, we are certainly not pleased that it can be mistaken for real-life combat footage and used as war propaganda,” Pavel Krizka, PR Manager of Bohemia Interactive, said in a November 28 press release. “It has happened in the past (Arma 3 videos allegedly depicted conflicts in Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine, and even between India and Pakistan), but nowadays this content has gained traction in regard to the current conflict in Ukraine.”
The life cycle is almost always the same. An Arma 3 nerd uploads something to YouTube and other people pull the video, edit it to make it look more realistic, then pass it off as actual footage of the conflict. The footage goes viral then the fact-checkers come in and tell everyone it’s a video game. Bohemia Interactive issues a statement and then everyone waits for the next fake to come along. “We’ve been trying to fight against such content by flagging these videos to platform providers (FB, YT, TW, IG etc.), but it’s very ineffective,” Krizka said in the press release. “With every video taken down, ten more are uploaded each day. We found the best way to tackle this is to actively cooperate with leading media outlets and fact-checkers (such as AFP, Reuters, and others), who have better reach and the capacity to fight the spreading of fake news footage effectively.” Some of the tells of fake footage include a low resolution, a shaky camera, and/or a night setting. “They’re often without sound, don’t feature people in motion, and sometimes still include the HUD elements from the video game,” adds Motherboard. “There’s typically unnatural particle effects, unrealistic vehicles, uniforms, and equipment.”
“We have seen many Arma players pointing out mistakenly identified footage, which helps viewers understand what they’re seeing,” said Bohemia Interactive. “Thank you for helping!”

Apple's iPhone Pro Shipments May Fall 20 Million Units Short of Estimates
Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max model shipments could miss market expectations by up to 20 million units in the holiday quarter due to labor unrest at a major Chinese factory, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said. Reuters reports: Kuo is the latest to flag a hit to the world’s most valuable company from protests over pay and strict COVID-19 curbs at the world’s biggest iPhone factory, the Foxconn-operated plant in the central city of Zhengzhou. He trimmed his estimate for quarterly iPhone shipments by about 20% to between 70 million and 75 million units, compared with the market consensus of 80 million to 85 million units.
Kuo, in a blog post on Tuesday, also predicted that the supply shortfall could erase demand for the more popular Pro models, instead of deferring sales, as consumers also grapple with a weakening economy. In contrast, other Apple analysts expect sales to pick up once production constraints ease and more Pro models become available. Some analysts signaled the possibility of the challenges extending into 2023.

Twitter’s former head of safety says platform is less safe under Elon Musk
In his first public interview since abruptly quitting Twitter, Yoel Roth, the company’s former head of trust and safety, said he believes the platform is less safe under Elon Musk. Speaking at an event hosted by the Knight Foundation, Roth responded “I don’t,” when asked if he still believed Twitter was safer since Musk’s takeover.
Roth’s comments are especially notable because he was one of the only top executives publicly discussing what was happening on Twitter in the chaotic days following Musk’s takeover. Roth, a longtime member of Twitter’s policy team, detailed the coordinated trolling campaign that caused a surge in racist slurs on the platform. Musk often highlighted his tweets and pointed to his explanations about what Twitter was doing to stop the racist attacks.
But Roth said that although he was initially optimistic, a breakdown in “procedural legitimacy” ultimately caused him to leave. He noted that Musk had stated he wanted to form a “moderation council” before making major policy decisions at Twitter, but Musk quickly showed he would rather make decisions on his own.
.@karaswisher: You tweeted that Twitter was actually safer under Elon. Do you still feel that way?
Former Twitter trust & safety head Yoel Roth (@yoyoel): I don’t

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) November 29, 2022
“He would say things that were consistent with establishing a moderation council, that were consistent with not making capricious, unilateral decisions, and I was optimistic on the basis of that,” Roth said. “My optimism ultimately faded.”
Roth also pointed to the botched rollout of Twitter Blue and paid verification, saying that his team had warned Musk ahead of time but he opted to ignore their concerns. “It went exactly off the rails in the way that we anticipated, and there weren’t the safeguards that needed to be in place to address it upfront,” Roth said, referring to the surge in scams and impersonations that followed the initial rollout of Twitter Blue.
Roth’s comments come as Musk is gearing up to relaunch Twitter Blue verification later this week. In his latest comments, Musk has said there will be different colors of badges for businesses and individuals, and that there will be a manual authentication process of some kind.
While Roth said he doesn’t believe Twitter will have a “spectacular moment of failure” as some former employees haves peculated following mass layoffs and resignations at the company, he said users should pay close attention to whether key safety features, like blocking and muting, continue to function normally, as well as privacy-protecting features like protected tweets. “If protected tweets stop working, run, because it’s a symptom that something is deeply wrong,” he said.
He also said that while Twitter may be able to improve its machine learning systems, the lack of veteran policy and safety employees at the company would hurt the platform.
“Are there enough people who understand the emergent malicious campaigns that happen on the service and understand it well enough to guide product strategy and policy direction,” he said. “I don’t think that there are enough people left at the company who can do that work.”
