Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that it has blocked President Trump’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely in the aftermath of the recent mob riot by alleged Trump supporters at the U.S Capitol. The ban may last until the end of his Presidential term or until a “peaceful transition of power is complete.” Many have voiced concerns about Trump’s misuse of various social media platforms that incites violence and discord. Twitter has also frozen his account for 12 hours on Wednesday and may permanently suspend it if he continues to violate Twitter guidelines.

CBS News:  Zuckerberg said, Mr. Trump used the platform to “incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.”

According to CBS News, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that President Trump will no longer be able to use his official Facebook and Instagram accounts after the social media giant indefinitely banned him following the violent protests at the U.S. Capitol, at least through the end of his presidential term.

“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” Zuckerberg said.

Twitter on Wednesday froze the president’s account for 12 hours and required him to take down tweets that repeated false claims about the election. The company said if Mr. Trump continues to violate Twitter rules he could be permanently suspended.

2020 And Bob Swan’s Impressive Year At Intel

When Bob Swan, Intel’s CEO, took over the company from Brian Krzanich, it looked like he had inherited a train wreck.  But he appeared to hit the ground running since he had been CFO and knew where all the bodies were buried.   He had to rebuild the company that had been ravaged by ill-advised layoffs, a lack of focus on Intel’s core business, and what had been a lengthy process of alienating Intel’s largest customers.  Frankly, had I been him, I’d have said no thanks and run for the hills.  But Bob rolled up his sleeves and drove into the problems making impressive changes and progress over the last 12 months. Let’s use this closeout week to go over some of what he accomplished.

Refocusing Intel

Intel’s Strategy was in the dumpster when Bob took over, allowing him to reform the firm around a different concept.  That concept was the XPU, a massive shift from Intel’s historic but languishing CPU strategy.  More similar to how Qualcomm approaches the Smartphone and Tablet markets, the XPU is more of a complete solution than just a collection of parts.  This solution consisted of a multi-architectural solution containing large and small core CPUs, their new Xe GPU, Altera FPGA, Habana AI accelerators, and other internal and acquired technologies.  Intel stepped sharply out of their CPU comfort zone into something that looks more like Qualcomm’s successful Snapdragon strategy.   

While Intel’s initial camera focused approach to autonomous driving seemed to be a knee jerk reaction to NVIDIA’s success in the same space, under Swan, Intel fleshed out the solution into something far more compelling.  By moving from parts to platforms, under Bob, Intel created a viable alternative with unique advantages in the emerging Self Driving car segment.  Intel reported they are currently ranked #1 in the emerging advanced driver assistance market in 2020.  

While there is some speculation that Intel may exit manufacturing, something I think is less likely given the fulfillment problems tied to the Pandemic.  These problems forced many companies to rethink outsourcing manufacturing, particularly outside their country of origin.  Under Bob, Intel has made several improvements.   These improvements include better tools and improved foundries, and disaggregated design principles that more efficiently lead to workloads that are optimized for cost and assure promised milestones are met.   

These changes have helped Intel grow revenue by $20B since 2015 while improving the firm’s diversity at the same time.  

Overcoming Adversity To Drive Growth

The changes Bob has made weren’t easy.  For instance, under his leadership, Intel divested their 5G Smartphone modem and NAND businesses.  But he didn’t just divest. He also acquired Habana, Moovit, and Bearfoot Network to complete his vision for Intel’s future.  Intel remained the largest semiconductor manufacturer globally in 2020, primarily due to nearly doubling its manufacturing capacity over the last three years. Intel’s advancements enhanced this improvement in Superfin, the largest single intranode improvement in Intel’s history (Tiger Lake).  

Intel also streamlined product roadmaps under Bob’s leadership and reached a better than 90% on-time delivery rate to customers despite the Pandemic shutdowns.  This improvement is critical in a market currently plagued by product shortages and supply chain problems resulting from the global Pandemic.    

These changes helped Intel grow significantly in new markets.  For instance, when Intel was mostly in inference, AI grew to $3,8B in 2019, and the firm moved into training more aggressively in 2020.   On top of all of this, Bob also drove rigor into Intel’s operations with improved transparency and accountability and weekly checkpoints to assure milestones and overcome one of Intel’s historical problems of missing critical expectations.  

Wrapping Up:

Coming in after someone else made a mess is problematic for a new CEO.  Fortunately, as CFO, Bob Swan would have had an excellent idea where he needed to focus and stepped up to the challenge.  As a result, Intel leaves 2020, despite the Pandemic, in better shape than the firm entered the year and better positioned for the future.  If Bob and his team can keep up the pace, Intel should have a healthy 2021 as well.  Intel is a critical national asset, and assuring its future isn’t just beneficial to Intel customers, employees, and investors. It is critical to the future of the country.  Fortunately, it is in good hands.  In a year defined by bad news, I thought that pointing out some good news at the end of the year was appropriate.

A pyramid scam is generally short-lived and will quickly collapse as the company owners are no longer able to make good on their obligations to their distributors and buyers. 

QNET: Banned in many countries?  

While the quick answer is a resounding “No”, this is yet another rumor that often surfaces about QNET. There are no bans in place against QNET in several countries most often mentioned, specifically Saudi Arabia, India, and Rwanda. While there were some legal challenges to the business model of multi-level marketing, the issues were not specifically targeted towards QNET. Legislation has been put in place in Rwanda that bans companies whose operations were not centralized at the time — an edict that did indeed include QNET. QNET’s leadership team was able to talk through the various concerns with Rwanda’s Ministry of Finance team, ultimately resulting in a thriving hub of operations in the area today. 

In Saudi Arabia, there is a general ban on MLM businesses and direct sales in general. It’s not unusual to see QNET’s name associated with this broad ban by the government, as QNET was the largest multi-level marketing organization in the country at the time of the ban. 

QNET’s current status in India is also questioned, although the company does business in the country through sub-franchisee Vihaan. After a multi-year investigation into a fraudulent claim against the company, there were still no findings from India’s highest court or the Economic Offences Wing of the government. There are new Ministry of Consumer Affairs guidelines that should help reduce any confusion around the various selling strategies that are promoted by QNET. 

Finding Legitimate Complaints Against QNET Online

The One Thing Worse Than Holiday Shopping? Monitoring Holiday Shopping

Everyone loves the holiday season, even the most cynical among us who feel it’s been distorted by a nefarious commercial plot concocted by greeting card companies. That being said, holidays are a nightmare for people responsible for business monitoring. As more holidays turn into mega shopping events, we see that shopping events turn into holidays – whether it’s Black Friday, Cyber Monday or China’s Singles’ Day.

Either way, holidays are notoriously hard for the professionals who are in charge of business monitoring. Whether you’re an e-Commerce site, a payments company or a restaurant (keep that example for later), making sure your business is running smoothly is based on understanding your ‘normal’. How much do you sell on a Sunday? How many transactions do you handle in the early morning in France? You rely on this ‘normal’ to understand if and when something is going wrong, regardless of the method you are using to detect it. 

The problem with holidays is that, on one hand, they are not normal – your business metrics behave differently during the holidays. Now let’s assume you have an alerting system. It monitors your ‘regular’ business behavior. Then comes a holiday. And all your alerts go crazy. One option would be to just turn off your alerting system so you don’t get bombarded with false negatives. Does that sound like a good idea? 

What you really want is to be able to compare the ‘not normal’ of this year’s holiday vs. the ‘not normal’ of last year. Because yes, you’re selling a lot more on Black Friday. But are you selling a lot more compared to last year? 

A common misconception is that business on the holidays is “the same, only more so”. That is not always true. Sure, retailers sell a lot more on Black Friday than a regular Friday. But it’s not only a difference in overall volume, it’s also a difference in behavioral patterns. Take our aforementioned restaurant. Assume it’s located in Istanbul. Each year during Ramadan, its Muslim patrons won’t coming in during the day, but at sundown orders come flooding in. This causes an increase in food consumption, only at very different hours than the normal. So it’s not just about volume, it’s also about changing patterns.

Last but not least, holidays are hard to monitor since they do not necessarily occur at a regular cadence.  You can’t just set alerts to suppress warnings every 365 days. Some are easy to predict because they occur on a specific date. However, consider holidays which are based on lunar calendars or holidays that are defined as happening on the fourth Thursday of November, like the American holiday of Thanksgiving. In the week or so leading up to that holiday, turkey sales accelerate exponentially until they’re sold out. But how do we prepare for these kinds of predicted patterns using what we already know.  

This is where we see more machine learning algorithms evolving to answer the challenge. While anomaly detection algorithms are becoming easier to use and access (running them at scale is a different story), some of the advancement in this field is based on the ability to learn an event’s behavioral patterns and then apply that learning to the next occurrence of the event. In order for an anomaly detection algorithm to properly handle such a unique event, we need to first train it to know how it should behave. Based on that training, the algorithm should be able to apply that learning as the new baseline which should be applied only when the next occurrence of the event happens. So, if I use the data from last Thanksgiving as my training set, the next Thanksgiving I will be able to use that as my baseline and only alert on the delta between the holiday occurrences and not the delta between the holiday and the day to day. So there is hope.

What We Need To Know About the New Coronavirus Strain

U.K scientists have recently discovered a new SARS-CoV-2 variant known as B.1.1.7. They say this appears to be more contagious as it tends to be transmitted quickly compared to the other existing strains. Although there are currently no strong indications that B.1.1.7 causes more serious diseases, the probability should still be taken into consideration. The development of this new variant has raised concerns on the efficacy of the vaccines; most experts say that it will still work on the new variant although experiments are still ongoing.

According to CNN, while scientists hunt for more information about the new Coronavirus variant called VUI-202012/01, its impact is already being felt.

As with other new variants or strains of Covid-19, this one carries a genetic fingerprint that makes it easy to track, and it happens to be one that is now common. That alone does not necessarily mean the mutation has made it spread more easily, nor does it not necessarily mean this variation is more dangerous.

Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, said that the variant was responsible for 60% of new infections in London, which have nearly doubled in the last week alone.

The new variant of Covid-19 originated in southeast England, according to the World Health Organization.

Concerns on the vaccines’ efficacy due to the development of this new strain has been raised, but Whitty said Saturday that current vaccines should still work against the new variant.

The New York Times reports that the variant came to the attention of researchers in December, when it began to turn up more frequently in samples from parts of southern England. It turned out to have been collected from patients as early as September.

Researchers in the U.K. have found that the virus is spreading quickly in parts of southern England, displacing a crowded field of other variants that have been circulating for months.

When asked where this variant came from, medical experts said that sometimes the virus infects people with weak immune systems. In their bodies, the virus can thrive for months. Case studies on these immunocompromised people have shown that the virus can accumulate a large number of mutations as it replicates in their bodies for a long period of time.

Google is again facing new lawsuits allegedly for monopolizing digital ad sales. Around 38 attorneys general and 4 private publishers filed complaints against the tech giant for allegedly violating the Sherman Act by crushing its competitors and manipulating search results in favor of their products and services. Google, meanwhile, responded to the lawsuit by saying that the complaints were “meritless” and that they will “strongly defend ourselves from his baseless claims in court.”

Several private publishers filed two antitrust lawsuits against Google this week as the company comes under increasing scrutiny over its advertising and search practices, Fox Business reports.

Sweepstakes Today is one of four companies that filed two private lawsuits, which Reuters published online, against Google, alleging that the tech giant has violated the Sherman Act by displaying monopolistic behavior through its digital ad sales.

The complaint also accuses Google of making it nearly impossible for publishers to do business with smaller advertisers that compete with Google.

At the same time, dozens of state attorneys general and the Justice Department also filed two separate antitrust complaints, led by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, respectively, against the tech giant on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.

St Louis is Raising Funds for DACA Applicants

Recently, a federal judge ruled against the Trump administration’s efforts to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. With this news, many people in the St. Louis area and throughout Missouri are crowdsourcing funds for new DACA applicants, nicknamed “Dreamers.”

Led by groups like the St. Louis Inter-Faith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA), fundraisers aim to cover the $495 application fee required for certain undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States. These efforts aim to eliminate significant barriers for low-income, younger applicants.

About DACA

DACA is an immigration reform initiative from the Obama era aimed at restructuring deportation and immigration enforcement efforts away from law-abiding undocumented immigrants. The policy outlines mechanisms for immigrants who came to the United States at a young age to obtain renewable two-year work permits. For undocumented immigrants who came to the United States with their parents and grew up in America, this gives them some leeway in their residency status.

In September 2017, the Trump administration ordered an end to DACA as part of its immigration reform platform. Democratic and Republican resistance to this policy, along with numerous legal battles, stalled the end of the DACA program.

With a U.S. District judge ruling in favor of DACA, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will reopen the application process once again. Despite other ongoing lawsuits against the program, recent court victories signal that DACA may live on into the Biden administration.

DACA Application Information

To see the specific requirements and forms to request consideration of deferred action, visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website for up-to-date information. Applicants will need to provide proof of identity, education or military involvement, and residency status. More Than 40 Organizations Hit by Supposed Russian Cyber Hacking Campaign

Over 40 organizations have been compromised by the suspected Russian cyber breach campaign. This was revealed by Microsoft in a blog post last Wednesday. Officials say that the hacking campaign has been going on since March, however, the illegal activities have only been discovered last week when multiple federal agencies got hit. 80% of those affected by the breach were from the U.S while the rest were from Canada,  Mexico, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Microsoft announced that they are working with cybersecurity company, FirmEye as an investigative partner. Although both were victims of the malware, they have already isolated and removed a vulnerability in the system. Currently, investigations are still ongoing to assess the extent of the damage.

CNN shared Microsoft  said that 80% of the victims are in the US while the rest are in seven other countries: Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Microsoft’s analysis represents the clearest and most specific assessment yet of the scope of the damage caused by the hacking campaign, which was secretly conducted through a third-party software program sold by SolarWinds, an IT management firm.

Earlier Thursday, Reuters reported that Microsoft had been compromised as well. Microsoft said it has “isolated and removed” a vulnerability in its systems tied to third-party software that had facilitated a suspected Russian hacking campaign.

NBC News: The breadth of the campaign has been an open question because it had the opportunity to infect a staggeringly wide array of victims.

According to NBC News, in March, the hackers were able to send poisoned software updates to all SolarWinds customers who used versions of its popular Orion platform, giving them a foothold into victims’ systems.

While many victims were government agencies, companies that contract with governments or think tanks and information and technology companies were also frequently hit, Microsoft found.

Microsoft’s statement is the first to provide a detailed estimate of how widespread the hack is. While the company doesn’t have total visibility into the hacking campaign, it has significant insight thanks to governments and corporations’ use of Windows and its antivirus software, Defender.

Qualcomm And Turning Earbuds Into A Super Power

Back when 3D TV came to market, I predicted it would fail because people didn’t like to wear glasses and the glasses you needed for the TVs had no other use.  The best glasses were electronic and used technology that could have been adopted to create automatic sunglasses that reliably and instantly reacted to ambient light.   I argued, had that been done, and a critical number of people bought the glasses, we’d have the foundation for 3D TV success.  But, it didn’t happen, and it wasn’t a success.

Earbuds, particularly during the pandemic, have less utility for music and phone calls, but they still could enhance hearing.  If they did enhance hearing, these earbuds could evolve to become something people wear like they wear watches because they make listening easier on top of working better with phone calls and listening to music.  

That is what Qualcomm is promoting with their new QCC305x Bluetooth solution for audio. Let’s explore the future of earbuds this week.  

The Emergence Of Cybernetics

One of the technology advancements we’ve been anticipating for some time is cybernetics, or the merger of humans and technology to provide people with enhanced capabilities.  The two areas that have been at the forefront of this move are audio technology and optical technology.  With optical technology, we’ve had head-mounted night vision goggles used by the military in use for decades. For audio technology, we’ve had both hearing aids and enhanced shooting headphones that block loud noises but enhance quiet sounds in the market for about the same time.  

But neither of these efforts advanced beyond military and shooting enthusiasts and certainly never made it mainstream.   We are next year, going to see Smart Glasses emerge. Still, they will likely repeat the past mistakes and focus on providing digital information and won’t yet improve eyesight, suggesting they won’t be mainstream on the next cycle either.  However, earbuds will transition into more of a prosthetic/cybernetic model with the release of the Qualcomm QCC305x Bluetooth solution.

Gaining Super Hearing

I mentioned the active noise cancellation earmuffs used by shooters, but I didn’t mention I’ve been using a set designed for the military and law enforcement since I was a Sheriff.  What made these handy is that they effectively blocked a shot’s noise, which can be defined while amplifying the ambient sounds around you directionally.  The result was I could hear better than others when competing in combat or police simulations while preserving my hearing when needing to take a shot.   

Earbuds based on the Qualcomm solution should be able to reduce the need for hearing aids.  Products based on the Qualcomm solution should improve ear protection from loud noises and amplify targeted environment sounds to hear better the things you want to hear.   If you go to a club or concert, you’ll be able to hear what you want to hear better while blocking the noise that makes it hard to hear now.  

These earbuds will also be able to do things like more accurately measure your temperature and listen for noises like coughs.  With the right training set, the earbuds might even be able to tell you if you have COVID-19, the Flu, or a cold reasonably accurately from the sound and temperature readings, reducing the need for other forms of testing.   And the biometrics aren’t necessarily limited to sound and temperature and could also include the amount of oxygen in your blood further increasing the accuracy of disease notice and identification and alerting things like carbon dioxide or monoxide poisoning.  

Wrapping Up:

We are racing toward cybernetics and the ability to enhance humans with technology.   Blazing this trail is Qualcomm’s new QCC305x solution, which will be in headsets shortly.  With these headsets, you’ll be able to see and better identify specific kinds of illnesses, and you’ll also be able to hear better anyplace you go.   

This advancement, I think, is the beginning of the age of cybernetics.  Smart Glasses and exoskeletons will eventually follow smart Earbuds to give us the kinds of capabilities some might equate with superpowers.   

However, I wouldn’t buy a spandex suit and a cape yet; we still have years to go before we finish building this bridge towards surgically implanted cybernetics.

Attack on SolarWinds’ Software Vulnerabilities Linked to Recent Hacking Incident in the U.S

The Pentagon, Department of Homeland Security, the Commerce Department, the Department of the Treasury, the U.S. Postal Service and the National Institutes of Health were among the federal agencies confirmed to have been affected by the latest cybersecurity breach, as disclosed by the government agencies and media reports. Experts are pointing their fingers on the Russian government for allegedly masterminding the attack on SolarWinds’ Orion software’s security vulnerabilities. The IT company has around 300 customers, comprising of the federal government and hundred of large U.S companies, that mostly use Orion software to monitor their computer networks. Russia has denied the allegations.

According to NPR.Org, the hack hinged on a vulnerability on a software monitoring product from SolarWinds, a company based in Austin, Texas. The company works widely with the federal government and hundreds of large U.S. companies. Many use SolarWinds’ Orion software to monitor their computer networks.

The incident is the latest in what has become a long list of suspected Russian electronic incursions into other nations – particularly the U.S. – under President Vladimir Putin. Multiple countries say Russia was previously found to have used hackers, bots and other means in attempts to influence elections in the U.S. and elsewhere.

To carry out the attack, hackers exploited the supply chain that SolarWinds uses to distribute software updates. The company said it has proof that when it sent updates to customers between March and June, the updates to the Orion products also included malware that gave hackers access.

The Hill: The Washington Post reported Sunday that a Russian military intelligence hacking group known as “Cozy Bear” was responsible.

The Hill shared a report disclosed by Reuters that SolarWinds  had been hacked by a nation state, and that the Treasury Department and a Commerce Department agency had been among those successfully breached. On Monday, reports emerged that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had also been successfully breached. 

According to Washington Post,  a Russian military intelligence hacking group known as “Cozy Bear” was responsible. The same group was previously accused of hacking into the State Department during the Obama administration, and of targeting COVID-19 vaccine research earlier this year. 

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday described the incident as a “consistent effort by the Russians to try to get into American servers, not only those of government agencies but of businesses” during an interview with Breitbart News Radio on SiriusXM Patriot.
