Violinist Performs An Evolution Of The Star Trek Series Theme From 1966 – 2020

evolution-of-star-trek-theme.jpg

This is a video of violinist Becky Sánchez performing a medley of the Star Trek series theme from 1966 to 2020 (The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Picard) to show how it’s changed. I, for one, did not realize the theme had changed that much. Does that make me stupid? “For that and a ton of other reasons.” Honey!

Gluing Sandpaper To The Side Of A Table Saw Blade To See If It Can Cut And Sand Simultaneously

sanding-table-saw-blade.jpg

This is a video of woodworker John Heisz of I Build It gluing sandpaper to the side of a table saw blade to see if it will cut and sand simultaneously. Like stepping on a scale after a month of working out and eating right and not chugging beers, he’s pleasantly surprised with the results. “How’s your weight loss journey going for you, anyways?” I’m down ten pounds. “From?” From the time I stood on the scale with two five-pound dumbbells.

Wild Cockatoos Attempt To Solve 3D Puzzle For Seed Reward

This is a video of a couple wild sulfur-crested cockatoos that reside in urban Sydney, Australia attempting to solve a 3-D printed puzzle that requires them to remove two dowels to release the birdseed they can see inside. Both solve the puzzle in no time at all, leading at least one blogger to suggest this was less a puzzle solving experiment and more just feeding birds like that crazy old lady in Mary Poppins.

Keep going for the whole video while I eat some sunflower seeds, shells and all because who cares anymore.

New Bill & Ted Movie Gets Its First Trailer

new-bill-and-ted-trailer.jpg

This is the first official trailer for Bill & Ted Face The Music, coming out this summer. From what I could gather, the plot involves Bill and Ted attempting to travel to the future to steal the song that unites the world and saves reality as we know it from their future selves, since they’re having trouble writing it in the present and figure it will already exist in the future. That is some sound logic. But will they take Napoleon to another water park?! If they’re hoping for a fresh Rotten Tomato rating from me they will.

Keep going for the trailer.

Good Lord: Video Of Semi Truck Navigating Streets With A 235-Foot, 152-Ton 'Super Load'

semi-hauling-235-foot-super-load.jpg

This is a video of a semi hauling a 235-foot, 152-ton toll gantry to the Florida Turnpike in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and having to navigate several turns that I did not think would be possible in the process. To the truck’s credit though, the gantry can pivot on both the front and rear axles, because otherwise this probably would not have been possible. As far as dream jobs go, driving that truck is at the very bottom of my list. And as far as jobs I’d actually be good at go, it’s even lower than that. I’d probably take out everything in my way, and Florida would never have power again.

Keep going for the fascinating video.

Inflatable Shark Pool Float Cooler And Drink Holder

shark-beverage-bar-pool-float-1.jpg

This is the $23 Shark Beverage Bar pool float manufactured by BigMouth Inc and available on Amazon. It looks like a shark and has seven beverages holders plus a cooler for ice and unopened cold ones under its dorsal fin. What a great idea! You know, this might actually be the first summer I don’t have to chase tequila shots with pool water. I mean if I bought this, which I’m not going to.

Keep going for one more shot with its fin back on where it belongs.

Saxaphone Player Playing Into The Open End Of A Giant Gas Pipeline

playing-saxophone-into-gas-pipeline.jpg

This is a video of a saxophonist playing his instrument into the open end of a giant gas pipeline that produces an echo that sounds like he’s playing with another musician. Or, who knows, maybe there’s another saxophone player trapped at the other end of that pipeline trying to signal for help. Stranger things have happened.

Video Of Just How Well Dandelion Seedheads Repel Water

This is a short video demonstrating just how well dandelion seedheads repel water. How well? VERY well. Possibly even the best. Like, if somebody asks how you’re doing these days and you answered honestly, the opposite of that.

Good Lord: Watching The World's Heaviest Aircraft Take Off

worlds-largest-plane.jpg

This is a video shot by Ross’ Aviation World of the world’s heaviest aircraft, the one-of-a-kind Antonov An-225 Mriya (with maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes — 710 short tons; 630 long tons), taking off from the Toronto Pearson International Airport on its way back to China after delivering COVID-19 related medical supplies. As you can see, it has about as many landing gear wheels as a centipede does legs. That thing is HUGE. I can’t believe it even flies. Although to be fair I can’t believe any planes actually fly without magic. Air flowing over the top of a wing faster than the bottom to reduce air pressure from above and create lift? Pfft, then how come the cardboard wings I made from Amazon boxes didn’t prevent my legs from breaking when I jumped off my parents’ garage? RIDDLE ME THAT. Ooh and *handing Sharpie* sign my casts.

Keep going for the whole video, but takeoff starts around 5:40.

Hoax Here I Come!: Finally, A Decent Bigfoot Hoodie

bigfoot-hoodie.jpg

This is the Brown Bigfoot (what other color would he be?) hoodie available from AlohaZing. It costs $50 and isn’t actually hairy, it’s an optical illusion thanks to the hoodie’s photorealistic print. Is it enough to convince people I’m Bigfoot while I’m zig-zagging in and out of the tree line behind my neighborhood? Depends whether or not people believe Bigfoot wears jean shorts and boat shoes.

Thanks to my buddy Dave L, who agrees it’s really the nipples that sell the illusion.

Oh Wow: This Beautifully Designed Origami Inspired Folding Chess Board And Piece Storage

This is a short video demonstration of the origami inspired folding chess board and piece storage unit created by mechanical engineer Brian Ignaut (who helped design unfolding solar arrays for SpaceX) of Degrees Of Freedom. Per Brian himself while I try to remember how the horsey pieces are allowed to move:

In the design, four wood panels are connected by six stainless steel links, four of which are used in pairs while the last two are used alone. The link pairs keep the joined panels parallel during all movement, while the single links permit rotation between boards which is used when pivoting the board into its playing orientation

Man, some people are so clever. My brain just does not work that way. Or, if we’re being completely honest, at all most of the time. FUN FACT: I spent almost all day Sunday troubleshooting my broken laptop because I forgot I’d turned the screen’s backlight all the way down.

Guy Builds Robotic Golf Club That's All Irons In One, Can Adjust Itself During Swing To Reach Desired Yardage

This is a video of a robotic golf club developed by Youtuber Stuff Made Here (previously: his never-miss basketball backboard) that with the twist of a dial can change the club head’s angle to operate as any iron. Not only that, instead of picking a club yourself you can adjust the dial to select how far you want the ball to go, and it will alter the club head’s angle in real time as you swing to get the ball closest to that target distance. Obviously, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to find out Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) had one of these in his bag in Caddyshack. That said, the last time I played putt-putt they refused to give me another ball after I accidentally hit my green one off the astroturf and into a water hazard. “You swung that putter like a 220 yard drive.” I misread the course, okay? My caddy’s sick.

Golden Gate Bridge Now Hums Eerily (And Loudly) Thanks To Installation Of New Guardrails

golden-gate-bridge.jpg

San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge now eerily hums in high winds thanks to the installation of new guardrails designed to lower the bridge’s wind resistance. Smooth move, engineers! Some more details while I email a big ‘I told you so!’ to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District for not choosing my fake engineering firm for the job:

Locals started noticing an eery howling a few months back, with one saying they wondered what the noise was in April. The sound projects throughout San Francisco and even across the bay during extreme winds–for better or worse. Engineers touted this as an expected “feature” of the new guardrail system, though those who live close by aren’t necessarily in love with the bridge’s new throaty pipes.

Right now, the rail replacement is 75 percent complete, meaning it could get even louder soon.

Woops! Apparently the sound can become so loud on the bridge during high winds that it becomes unbearable and hurts your ears. That, uh, that sounds like pretty serious design flaw. Are they going to do anything about it? Only time will tell. Personally, I suggest they install a boombox every ten feet playing even louder music, but that’s just me and *duct-taping cell phone to cheek for hands-free operation* I’m a problem solver.

Keep going for a shot of the old guardrails (top) vs the new (bottom), and three videos of the sound from different areas, including one from actually on the bridge.

Yeah I'm Good On That: Guy Exploring 10%+ Grade Mountain Runoff Culvert

This is a video of intrepid explorer and Youtuber post 10 descending a steep 10%+ grade mountain runoff culvert, which leads to a waterfall at the end. It takes him about 17 scary minutes to reach the waterfall, at which point he immediately turns around and heads back up instead of yelling “Geronimo!” and cannonballing down the fall like I’d been hoping. He does walk around and show the waterfall from the outside though around 31:00. Me? I would have just ridden the whole thing in an inflatable pool float like the world’s deadliest log flume. “You would have died.” Pfft, you can’t kill what’s already dead. “For the last time, you’re not an undead warlock.” It says so on my driver’s license! “This is a D&D character sheet.” Well it’s the closest I’ve got.

Keep going for the video, but remember he approaches the very bottom around 16:00, and shows the bottom from the outside around 31:00.

Everybody Needs A Hobby: This Crazy-High Production Value Marble Race Video

This is a video from Youtube channel Jelle’s Marble Runs of marbles standing in for the real Formula E (single seat electric car) racing teams in a multi-lap marble race inspired by the track layout in Jakarta, Indonesia. The track and video work are impressive in their own right, but it’s the commentary that really makes the video something special. I mean these guys are total professionals. If you only heard the audio you’d never guess they were commenting on a marble race. “I thought it was a dog show.” *tousling hair* Bless your heart.

Newly Developed Machine Learning App Turns Rough Sketches Into Photorealistic Faces

This is a video demonstration of the DeepFaceDrawing app developed by researchers from Hong Kong and China that can turn rough sketches into surprisingly realistic faces. Obviously, I need to see the Alabama leprechaun run through the system because I want the gold. Just think, as soon as they upgrade the DeepFaceDrawing app to the DeepWholeBodyDrawing app, you’ll never be more than a quick doodle away from something to pleasure yourself to.

Project Proximity: A Dress That Extends Plastic Arms If Someone Is Too Close

This is a video demonstration of experimental fashion designer Anouk Wipprecht’s latest creation, the Project Proximity Dress. It uses proximity and thermal sensors in the collar to detect nearby humans, and extends a plastic arm from each hip if they get too close. If this sounds familiar you may recall Anouk’s previously posted Spider Dress from 2014, which tries to stab you if you get too close. Speaking of, in bed at night my girlfriend uses a cold foot to let me know if I get too close, which, I kid you not, has actually led to frostbite on several occasions. “They’re not that cold.” Honey I have butt grafted on my shins now.
