Clever: Guy maps VR to his actual apartment

vr-mapped-to-apartment copy.jpg

This is a video of a guy who mapped his Oculus VR world to his actual apartment. It’s a super clever idea, although one wonders why he stuck with the same size TV. I get the sofas and other parts of the room, but when you’re in a virtual space your first move should be making your TV the size of the viewable Universe.

A disaster movie trailer for the year 2020

2020-movie-trailer.jpgYouTuber Grim Sausage cut together the year 2020 as a disaster movie trailer and it’s one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen. If this was the trailer for World War Z you’d say the most realistic part was the zombies, because there’s no way Earth could ever get that messed up.

Compilation of model rocket launch failures

compilation-model-rocket-fail.jpg

Joe Barnard is the guy behind BPS.space, a rocketry channel that explores the advancement of real space rockets by building similar components for model rockets. Obviously an endeavor like that is bound to have a lot of failures, and he compiled together a bunch of those in this video. Although is it really a failure when the footage you get is infinitely more entertaining than if things had gone right? It’s basically the entire premise behind NASCAR and the only I have any friends at all. When they laugh at me it means they like me, right?

This guy turned himself into an animated stencil

Turned myself into an animated stencil

Stop motion animator Kevin Parry turned himself into an animated stencil using nothing but some water and a wall. It’s a clever idea, and much more effective than when I attempted the same thing with spray paint. I called it quits after I ended up blind and swallowing mouthfuls of paint and the resulting animation was just an un-moving black wall. Looking back, I probably shouldn’t have even bothered sending it to Disney as part of my demo reel.

Ferrari made a short film featuring their SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid

le-grand-rendez-vous-ferrari-short-film copy.jpg

The Monaco Grand Prix was cancelled due to COVID-19 back in May, so Ferrari took the opportunity to film this short, Le Grand Rendez-Vous. It features their driver Charles Leclerc racing around the roads in Ferrari’s plug-in hybrid electric, the SF90 Stradale, and the whole thing was shot with 17 people in Monaco using six iPhone 11 Pros, nine Go Pros and one Sony Venice Camera.

Calling this thing a short film is being generous, as Ferrari is clearly better at building cars than they are at telling stories. The car is admittedly nice, but the story makes absolutely no sense. My home sex tape had more of a story, and that just featured me rocking back and forth on my bed weeping. The reviews on PornHub have not been kind.

Video demonstration of the self-righting shape Gömböc

gomboc-shape.jpg

This is a video demonstrating the unique properties of a gömböc: a shape that only has two equilibrium points (one stable and one unstable) instead of the usual minimum four. What this means is that it will always right itself no matter how you set it down. I’m too dumb to understand what a stable or unstable equilibrium point is, so I’ll let The Action Lab explain:

Hi everyone, some are confused about why there is only one unstable equilibrium on the Gomboc since you can set it along anywhere on the upper edge and it will tip over. An unstable equilibrium is not simply an edge where it will tip over, but it has a specific definition. The equilibrium points are where the derivative of the potential energy of the shape is zero. To see if it is an unstable or stable equilibrium, then you check to see if the second derivative is positive or negative. If the second derivative of the potential energy is negative then it is an unstable equilibrium. If the second derivative is positive it means that the equilibrium stable. Non-mathematically this means that the unstable equilibrium is the point that it theoretically could be balanced because the weight is equal all around the point, but it would fall over at the slightest wind or movement.

So basically magic. A gömböc is a magical shape. There’s a penis joke to be made here, but this is a sophisticated site full of monocles and top hats. We’re too busy sipping wine and tasting cheese to make any of those kinds of jokes.

'Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones' recut as a buddy cop trailer

star-wars-episode-2-buddy-cop.jpg

YouTuber Imperator Cuts re-cut Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones into a trailer in the style of The Nice Guys. They actually manage to make some of the humor work and miraculously give Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen some chemistry. That line about hating sand? It works here! From this trailer you would have no idea that the actual Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones is so bad scientists are wondering if it’s the real cause of Covid-19.

Beautiful bastard Rickrolls the actual Rick Astley

rickroll-rick-astley copy.jpg

In what can only be described as peak internet, Reddit user theMalleableDuck managed to Rickroll the actual Rick Astley. You can read the original thread here, though the screenshot captures the essence of it.

Upon further inspection, there’s no evidence Rick Astley actually clicked the link, so if we want to be as pedantic as possible about this, what we have here is a Rick Astley-approved attempt at Rickrolling Rick Astley. Although honestly, to even attempt it is worth applause. Somebody buy this guy some memes. They’ve earned it.

Guy builds recreation of the D Bridge from 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'

star-trek-d-bridge-recreation copy.jpg

Model maker Geoff Collard spent 500 hours over several months recreating the D Bridge from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The attention to detail is mind boggling, and it even features a functional active view screen.

Finally completed model of the Star Trek TNG D Bridge with active view screen. My hope was to make a scale model that people would think it was the real set until I panned out. Apologies to people who did think that and were disappointed it was only a model, but your disappointment would mean that I had accomplished my goal.

This is an impressive use of shelter-at-home quarantine time. I’ve mostly just been mastur– I mean, um, not masturbating. I’ve been doing a lot of that.

Little kid loves being handed things

little-kid-loves-being-handed-things copy.jpg

For your weekly fix of cuteness, here’s a video of a kid who loves being handed things. And by things I mean plates of food. Really, really good looking plates of food. I mean, c’mon, the meal prep happening in this house rivals most restaurants. A more accurate title would’ve been Normal Person Likes Food.

No Paint let's you paint without painting

no-paint.jpgNo Paint is a site that algorithmically generates “paint strokes” and then you click “No” or “Paint” depending on if you want to keep the “strokes” or not. I’m putting “strokes” in quotes because it’s hard to classify what’s actually happening as painting or paint strokes or what. Basically weird stuff appears on your canvas and you decide if you like it or not. I don’t know. It’s a terrible way to paint. It’s also great.

Disorienting mashup of Olympic athletes moving their bodies

concatenation-2-olympic-games.jpg

Filmmaker Donato Sansone has put together an equally impressive followup to his original Concatenation short. Concatenation 2: Olympic Game is a mashup of Olympic athletes’ doing the things Olympic athletes do: jumping, spinning, flipping, and basically everything that’s not standing still. The most impressive part is how coherent everything is despite the insane editing. It’s basically the exact opposite of my personal vlogs, which have zero editing and are still 100% impossible to follow. Look, I’m just trying to review microwave pizzas, okay? Leave me alone.

Boston Dynamics' Spot is now for sale for $74,500.00

boston-dynamics-spot-for-sale.jpg

After years of teasing the apocalypse, robot death dealer Boston Dynamics finally has their Spot for sale for $74,500.00 which you can buy from their official site.

Spot Explorer is designed for developers eager to explore how flexible mobile robots can be adapted for tasks ranging from industrial inspection to entertainment. Spot comes ready to operate, right out of the box. With its flexible API and payload interfaces, Spot can be customized for a variety of applications.

I can’t tell if $74,500.00 is a lot or little for this. I’m also not sure what you would even use it for. Carrying your backpack around campus while you’re at school? Helping you move the dead body? I mean, yeah, okay, I guess I can think of a few uses. Looks like somebody is about to max out some credit cards.

Spying on komodo dragons with a robotic pig

komodo-dragon-robot-pig.jpg

This video of komodo dragons attacking a robot spy pig was taken from episode 3 of Spy in the Wild 2 on PBS. It’s honestly a little underwhelming, especially the entire premise of the spy pig. Most spies don’t waddle up to you and try to entice you into eating them. It’s more of a bait camera than a spy camera, but at least it still managed to get some shots from inside a komodo dragon’s mouth, so that’s kind of neat. Although they could’ve swapped out the footage from a gynecology exam and I bet nobody would be able to tell the difference.

Reinterpreting good movies as old book covers

parasite-book-cover.jpg

Designer Matt Stevens has been working on an ongoing project of converting his favorite movies into the style of old book covers. He currently has about 60 pieces finished and has started a Kickstarter to turn his goal of 100 into an actual hardcover book. And once he’s finished publishing his book of movie book covers, it’ll only be a matter of time before somebody makes a movie about his book of movie book covers and he’ll be forced to make a book cover of that movie.

Keep going for a bunch more samples of his work.

Protective face masks with your own face on them

maskalike-hide-the-pain-harold-1.jpg

San Francisco designer Danielle Baskin has started a company Maskalike that custom prints faces (or any image) onto protective face masks. It’s a pretty brilliant idea. And by brilliant I mean weirdly creepy, as evidenced by their Hide The Pain Harold Face Mask which Danielle can be seen wearing in the image above. And sure, wearing a protective mask with your own face on it is fun and all, but it’s obvious the real move here is to print one with Ryan Reynolds’ face so that you can trick people into liking you. But instead of a protective face mask it’s a full mask. And instead of a mask it’s his actual skin.

Keep going for one more shot of Hide The Pain Harold, along with Danielle demoing one with her own face on it.

Spies Can Now Eavesdrop Using Ordinary Light bulbs

lamphone-lamp-eavesdrop-spy-technique.jpg

Because the world isn’t scary enough as it is, researchers from Israeli’s Ben-Gurion University have developed a way to eavesdrop on conversations by analyzing the vibrations off a light bulb. They call the technique “lamphone” and say anyone with a laptop, a telescope, and a $400 electro-optical sensor can do it.

This is the kind of thing that would normally worry me, but I mostly just pity the spy that has to listen to the sounds of my lonely sobbing, occasionally broken up by the slurping of SpaghettiOs. Look, Mr. Spy, you don’t even have to use my light bulb. Just join me at the dinner table and save yourself the trouble.

No, Geekologie isn't going anywhere

monkeys-at-typewriter.jpg

There’s obviously no way to fill the void left by Mr. Geekologie Writer, so in looking for a replacement we’ve decided to go for quantity over quality. That’s right, instead of even attempting to find an equally talented writer we’re holding a group of monkeys at gunpoint hoping they’ll be able to cobble up some magic. Will the site continue? Yes. Will our interns be covered in monkey poo? Also yes. But these are the sacrifices we’re willing to make for your entertainment.

Please bear with us. We know we aren’t as good as the old writer. Our mothers already tell us that every day.

Geekologie Writer, Blasting Off

gw-out.jpg

I hate goodbyes, so I won’t make this any longer than it needs to be. It is with no small amount of sorrow that I leave my post as Geekologie Writer. After thirteen years and 24,900+ articles, it’s time to move on. If we held hands and went back and read every article together, I’m confident we could agree on at least forty that were okay. Because I don’t know what I’d do with myself without an outlet to write dumb shit on the internet, I’ll be writing over at www.borninspace.com. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter while I work the kinks out of the website like a sensual masseuse, which should be rocking and rolling within the week. I can also be reached via email at hitelikesthis@gmail.com with business inquires or if you just want to Venmo me all your money. Like Celine Deon’s heart, Geekologie will go on. Jack will probably still die because Rose didn’t save him any space on her raft, but that’s life (and death). Thanks for reading throughout the years, and *raising glass* I hope to see you all in space shortly.
