Universal Audio's SC-1 condenser microphone comes with new modeling software

Mic modeling has come a long way in just a few years, and modern software plugins, to these ears, get quite close to the real deal. Universal Audio has been at the forefront of this technology for a while and now the company’s released a new condenser microphone that integrates with its equally new Hemisphere mic modeling plugin.

The SC-1 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone, operating as part of the company’s Standard Series that also includes the pre-existing SD-1 and SP-1. The SC-1 launches alongside the Hemisphere plugin that gives users digital access to a full range of classic mics from big-time companies like Neumann, Telefunken, AKG, Sony and others. The plugin uses a similar technology to the company’s Sphere line of modeling microphones, but with a drastic reduction in cost, as the SC-1 costs $500 and Sphere microphones range from $800 to $1,400.

The Hemisphere plugin lets you instantly audition different microphones to suit the take, tweak proximity, adjust filters and more. All of these adjustments can be done before recording or afterward, just like with the Sphere line. One benefit the SC-1 boasts over the Sphere line is that it requires just a single XLR input, while Sphere microphones require two to properly capture that stereo field.

The Hemisphere modeling plugin also extends to those other Standard Series mics, like the SP-1 pencil microphone and the SD-1 dynamic microphone. As for the SC-1 itself, it’s a standard no-frills large-diaphragm condenser with an extended dynamic range and a frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. There’s also an emphasis on low self-noise output, which makes it easier to transform via the numerous modeling options.

Universal Audio’s SC-1 is available for preorder right now and ships later in the fall. The microphone includes the Hemisphere modeling plugin, so your wallet won’t have to double dip. Additionally, the plugin is a free upgrade for existing SD-1 and SP-1 owners.

How to Spot Financial Infidelity (and What to Do About It)

I’ll admit it: I’ve gone through a partner’s phone to catch them being unfaithful. But while I scoured their texts for proof of infidelity, I didn’t think to also head on over to their banking apps for a different kind of cheating: financial infidelity. Now, I can’t endorse the sort of privacy violations that I’m…

Amazon Allows Managers To Terminate Employees in Office-Attendance Noncompliance

New submitter flashpoint31415 writes: Amazon is now giving managers leeway to effectively fire employees who fail to meet the company’s three-times-a-week, return-to-office mandate.

The guidelines tell managers to first hold a private conversation with employees who don’t comply with the three-times-a-week requirement. Then, managers have to document the discussion in a follow-up email. If the employee continues to refuse to come in, the manager should hold another meeting, and if needed, take disciplinary action that includes a termination of employment.

Giving managers the ability to fire employees for non-compliance is the strongest measure Amazon has taken over its return-to-office policy.

Netflix Didn't Change Black Mirror, Its Creators Did

Charlie Brooker created Black Mirror for Channel 4 in the U.K. before it was snapped up by Netflix for streaming. The first two seasons (plus one special) were extremely dark, and Brooker admitted during a chat at SXSW Sydney that the general lightening of tone once the show was produced by Netflix was a “criticism”…

Zotac's Zbox Pico PI430AJ Uses Frore's AirJet Solid-State Active Cooling

Zotac has introduced the industry’s first compact PC featuring Frore’s AirJet solid-state cooling system. Zotac’s ultra-compact Zbox Pico PI430AJ is powered by Intel’s Core i3 processor is designed primarily for everyday home and office computing, as well as applications like digital signage.

As far as specifications are concerned, Zotac’s Zbox Pico PI430AJ is a fairly sophisticated machine featuring Intel’s eight-core Core i3-N300 CPU, 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and an M.2 SSD. For connectivity the PC offers a Wi-Fi 6 + Bluetooth 5.2 adapter, a single GbE port, a USB Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Type-A connectors, and two display outputs (DisplayPort and HDMI).

The Zbox Pico PI430AJ has two major selling points: it is as small as modern smartphones, and it is passively cooled using Frore’s AirJet solid-state cooling module, or chip. AirJet’s module dissipates heat from electronic components by propelling ultrasonic waves of air across fin-like structures on each chip. This mechanism effectively directs a cool flow of air across the chip’s surface area, moving heat away from the silicon components while not collecting dust. Compared to conventional fan cooling methods, AirJet stands out by offering equivalent heat dissipation with enhanced power efficiency and quieter operation. Specifically, each chip can remove 5W of heat, with the capacity to scale up; for instance, two chips can expel 10W.

Zotac’s Zbox Pico PI430AJ seems to use two AirJet modules, so they can dissipate up to 10W of power, which should be more or less enough for Intel’s Core i3-N300.

Zotac claims that its Zbox Pico PI430AJ Mini PC is now available for purchase in both Windows and barebones versions in select regions (primarily APAC and EMEA, from the looks of things), but is disclosing its recommended pricing.

While Frore’s AirJet solid-state active cooling makes a lot of sense for Zbox Pico PI430AJ as it enables it to run faster for longer periods, it should be noted that for Zotac this mini PC is a way to try out the technology in a mass-produced product. That said, if AirJet meets Zotac’s expectations for performance, reliability, manufacturability, and costs, expect the company to use it for other PCs as well.

Indian Authorities Raid Fake Tech Support Rings After Tipoff From Amazon and Microsoft

Acting on information from Microsoft and Amazon, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has raided alleged fake tech support operators and other tech-related crims across the country. From a report: The Bureau shared news of a Thursday operation that saw it conduct 76 searches in relation to five cases. The Bureau stated its effort “was conducted in collaboration with national and international agencies, alongside private sector giants,” and described two of its targets as international tech support fraud scams that “impersonated a global IT major and a multinational corporation with an online technology-driven trading platform.”

The alleged scammers operated call centers in five regions of India and “systematically preyed on foreign nationals, masquerading as technical support representatives” for at least five years. The scammers sent users pop-up messages that appeared to come from multinational companies and advised of PC problems — with a toll-free number at which assistance could be had. Victims who called the fakers had their PCs taken over, and were charged hundreds of dollars for a fix.

Swytch DIY e-bike conversion kits: A very, very long-term review

Swytch battery on the handlebar of a gray/pink hybrid bike

Recommending the Swytch e-bike conversion kit feels like recommending a DIY desktop computer upgrade. You’re not evaluating or describing any one experience so much as telling somebody that it might save them money, that it could be a fun project, and that the end result can be a point of pride. Though it would be easier, you can’t replicate the upgrade experience by simply buying another bike. It all depends on what you want out of an e-bike—or a weekend project.

I’ve now converted two bikes with Swytch kits, I’ve walked my in-laws through upgrading their own cruiser-style bikes with them, and I’ve made tweaks and fixes to all of the bikes over two years. What I’ve learned is that there’s no single “Swytch kit experience” because every bike is a collection of components, and each component has dimensions and angles and quirks that play off the kit in different ways.

Some people will drop the front wheel off their bike, replace it with Swytch’s wheel, strap down a few cables with zip-ties, mount a battery, and feel the boost on their first ride a couple hours later. Some people will learn a lot more about rims, tires, and beads than they knew before or discover that their seemingly normal-looking front fork is quirky and find that the dropouts require some filing.
