Amazon's new Fire TV soundbar is 17 percent off in early Black Friday deal

It’s been less than two months since Amazon launched the Fire TV soundbar at its annual fall event, but the device is already on sale as part of the website’s early Black Friday offerings. You can get the brand new entry to the Fire TV line for $100, which is a full $20 less than its original list price. The device can enhance your TV audio with its dual speakers and give you access to a 3D virtual surround sound experience with its DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Audio support.

It can connect to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth, but it doesn’t support Alexa voice commands. And if you want to adjust its volume, you’d have to use its remote. That said, if you have a Fire TV streaming device and a Fire TV-powered smart TV, you can use one remote for all of them — simply plug the soundbar’s HDMI cable to your TV.

Amazon’s soundbar is just one of the Fire TV devices currently on sale at the website. You can get its streaming sticks for up to half off their usual prices, including the Fire TV Stick Lite that’s on sale for $18 and the standard Fire TV Stick that’s listed for $20. If you don’t mind spending a bit more for higher-quality streaming, you can get the Fire TV Stick 4K for $30 instead or the even beefier Fire TV Stick Max for $45. Finally, the TV Cube will cost you over 20 percent less than usual and will set you back $110.

The Experience AI Challenge: Make your own AI project

We are pleased to announce a new AI-themed challenge for young people: the Experience AI Challenge invites and supports young people aged up to 18 to design and make their own AI applications. This is their chance to have a taste of getting creative with the powerful technology of machine learning. And equally exciting: every young creator will get feedback and encouragement from us at the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

As you may have heard, we recently launched a series of classroom lessons called Experience AI in partnership with Google DeepMind. The lesson materials make it easy for teachers of all subjects to teach their learners aged up to 18 about artificial intelligence and machine learning. Now the Experience AI Challenge gives young people the opportunity to develop their skills further and build their own AI applications.

Key information

  • Starts on 08 January 2024
  • Free to take part in
  • Designed for beginners, based on the tools Scratch and Machine Learning for Kids
  • Open for official submissions made by UK-based young people aged up to 18 and their mentors
  • Young people and their mentors around the world are welcome to access the Challenge resources and make AI projects
  • Tailored resources for young people and mentors to support you to take part
  • Register your interest and we’ll send you a reminder email on the launch day

The Experience AI Challenge

For the Experience AI Challenge, you and the young people you work with will learn how to make a machine learning (ML) classifier that organises data types such as audio, text, or images into different groupings that you specify.

A girl points excitedly at a project on the Raspberry Pi Foundation's projects site.

The Challenge resources show young people the basic principles of using the tools and training ML models. Then they will use these new skills to create their own projects, and it’s a chance for their imaginations to run free. Here are some examples of projects your young tech creators could make:

  • An instrument classifier to identify the type of musical instrument being played in pieces of music
  • An animal sound identifier to determine which animal is making a particular sound
  • A voice command recogniser to detect voice commands like ‘stop’, ‘go’, ‘left’, and ‘right’
  • A photo classifier to identify what kind of food is shown in a photograph

All creators will receive expert feedback on their projects.

To make the Experience AI Challenge as familiar and accessible as possible for young people who may be new to coding, we designed it for beginners. We chose the free, easy-to-use, online tool Machine Learning for Kids for young people to train their machine learning models, and Scratch as the programming environment for creators to code their projects. If you haven’t used these tools before, don’t worry. The Challenge resources will provide all the support you need to get up to speed.

Training an ML model and creating a project with it teaches many skills beyond coding, including computational thinking, ethical programming, data literacy, and developing a broader understanding of the influence of AI on society.

The three Challenge stages

Our resources for creators and mentors walk you through the three stages of the Experience AI Challenge.

Stage 1: Explore and discover

The first stage of the Challenge is designed to ignite young people’s curiosity. Through our resources, mentors let participants explore the world of AI and ML and discover how these technologies are revolutionising industries like healthcare and entertainment.

Stage 2: Get hands-on

In the second stage, young people choose a data type and embark on a guided example project. They create a training dataset, train an ML model, and develop a Scratch application as the user interface for their model.

Stage 3: Design and create

In the final stage, mentors support young people to apply what they’ve learned to create their own ML project that addresses a problem they’re passionate about. They submit their projects to us online and receive feedback from our expert panel.

Things to do today

  1. Visit our new Experience AI Challenge homepage to find out more details
  2. Register your interest so you receive a reminder email on launch day, 8 January
  3. Get your young people excited and thinking about what kind of AI project they might like to create

We can’t wait to see how you and your young creators choose to engage with the Experience AI Challenge!

Scarlett Johannson takes legal action against AI app that cloned her likeness

Oscar-nominated actor Scarlett Johansson has taken legal action against an AI app developer for using her likeness in an ad without permission, Variety has reported. The 22-second ad promoted an AI image editor called Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar, and reportedly used an AI-generated version of Johansson’s voice and image.

The ad showed a real clip of Johansson in a Black Widow behind-the-scenes clip, saying “What’s up guys? It’s Scarlett and I want you to come with me…”. It then transitions to AI-generated photos and a cloned version of her voice promoting the AI app. Under the ad is fine print that states: “Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person.” Multiple Lisa AI apps created by Convert Software remain on the App Store and Google Play, according to Variety, but the ad no longer appears on X.

Johansson is “handling the situation in a legal capacity,” said her lawyer Kevin Yorn. “We do not take these things lightly. Per our usual course of action in these circumstances, we will deal with it with all legal remedies that we will have,” he added.

Johansson has one of the best known faces (and voices) in Hollywood and is the spokesperson for high-end companies including Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton. Given that, it’s hard to believe that someone would even attempt to rip off her likeness, if the claim is accurate (and it’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for the quality of ads on X).

The idea of using AI to rip off celebrity likenesses is a relatively new phenomenon, so the legal ramifications are still being worked out. In one notable incident, actor Tom Hanks warned his fans on social media that videos using AI versions of his likeness were being used to fraudulently hawk products.

Though it’s still a legal grey area, some states have related laws around privacy rights, with California for one allowing civil lawsuits for the unauthorized use in advertising or promotion of someone’s “name, voice, signature, photograph or likeness.”

Disney is taking full ownership of Hulu, setting it up to dominate streaming

Disney is buying the rest of Hulu from Comcast, the company has announced. It will acquire the 33 percent of Hulu Comcast still controls and expects to pay NBC Universal approximately $8.61 billion for the deal, though the final amount will be determined after an appraisal that will be wrapping up sometime next year. As The New York Times notes, the companies had agreed back in 2019 that Comcast could force Disney to buy its stake by next year and Disney could require Comcast to sell. The cable TV and media company chose to speed up negotiations with Disney instead of waiting until 2024.

“The acquisition of Comcast’s stake in Hulu at fair market value will further Disney’s streaming objectives,” Disney said in its announcement. Earlier this year, the company revealed that it will launch a “one-app experience” that combines Disney+ and Hulu content by the end of 2023. While it didn’t outright say at the time that it had plans to buy out Comcast, that was a pretty big clue that a full Hulu takeover was in the cards. Hulu’s standalone app won’t be going away anytime soon, but its offerings will also be available on Disney+ when the new experience launches.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said when he announced the combined streaming app that it’s “a logical progression” of the company’s direct-to-consumer offerings “that will provide greater opportunities for advertisers, while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content…” As for Comcast, it already has its own streaming service — Peacock — and has been making its shows like The Voice available to its members.

Air Pollution Raises Risk of Type 2 Diabetes, Says Landmark Indian Study

Inhaling polluted air increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, the first study of its kind in India has found. Research conducted in Delhi and the southern city of Chennai found that inhaling air with high amounts of PM2.5 particles led to high blood sugar levels and increased type 2 diabetes incidence. From a report: When inhaled, PM2.5 particles — which are 30 times thinner than a strand of hair — can enter the bloodstream and cause several respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The study [PDF] is part of ongoing research into chronic diseases in India that began in 2010. It is the first to focus on the link between exposure to ambient PM2.5 and type 2 diabetes in India, one of the worst countries in the world for air pollution. The average annual PM2.5 levels in Delhi was 82-100ug/m3 and in Chennai was 30-40ug/m3, according to the study, many times the WHO limits of 5ug/m3. Indiaâ(TM)s national air quality standards are 40ug/m3.

There is also a high burden of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease in India; 11.4% of the population — 101 million people — are living with diabetes, and about 136 million are pre-diabetic, according to a paper published in the Lancet in June. The average diabetes prevalence in the European Union was 6.2% in 2019, and 8.6% in the UK in 2016. The Lancet study found India’s diabetes prevalence to be higher than previous estimations and showed a higher number of diabetics in urban than rural India.

Mass Lawsuit Against Apple Over iPhone Batteries Can Go Ahead, London Tribunal Rules

Apple on Wednesday lost a bid to block a mass London lawsuit worth up to $2 billion which accuses the tech giant of hiding defective batteries in millions of iPhones. From a report: The lawsuit was brought by British consumer champion Justin Gutmann on behalf of around 24 million iPhone users in the United Kingdom. Gutmann is seeking damages from Apple on their behalf of up to 1.6 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) plus interest, with the claim’s midpoint range being 853 million pounds. His lawyers argued Apple concealed issues with batteries in certain phone models by “throttling” them with software updates and installed a power management tool which limited performance.

Apple, however, said the lawsuit was “baseless” and strongly denied batteries in iPhones were defective, apart from in a small number of iPhone 6s models for which it offered free battery replacements. The company sought to get the case thrown out of court, but the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) said Gutmann’s case can proceed in a written ruling on Wednesday.
