Qualcomm-Iridium Deal To Bring Satellite Connectivity To Phones Collapses

A partnership between Qualcomm and Iridium to bring satellite connectivity to Android phones has fallen apart, almost a year after the deal was announced. From a report: In January, the two companies debuted the Snapdragon Satellite platform, a way to bring satellite-based SMS and emergency messaging to high-end smartphones. But on Thursday, Iridium said Qualcomm will cancel the partnership, effective Dec. 3. “The companies successfully developed and demonstrated the technology; however, notwithstanding this technical success, smartphone manufacturers have not included the technology in their devices,” Iridium said in the announcement. “Due to this, on November 3, 2023, Qualcomm notified Iridium that it has elected to terminate the agreements.”

Qualcomm didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But the statement from Iridium suggests the Snapdragon Satellite platform suffered from technical issues, or perhaps failed to attract interest from smartphone vendors. Back in January, the companies also indicated that the Snapdragon Satellite platform would require supported phones to be manufactured with modems that could communicate with the Iridum network’s L-Band radio frequencies.

Verizon may soon offer a $10 bundle of Netflix and Max ad-supported plans

You’ve heard of Netflix and chill, but how about Netflix and Max? Verizon may soon offer a discounted bundle of the streaming services’ ad-supported tiers for $10 per month. That’s $7 less than it would cost you to subscribe to them separately. Given that the Max plan costs $10 per month, you’d effectively be getting Netflix access for free.

The bundle may be announced in the coming weeks. According to The Wall Street Journal, Netflix and Max owner Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) will share revenue with Verizon. It seems that Verizon will offer the bundle to its myPlan customers. Netflix is already available through some Verizon bundles, but this would be the first time the ad-supported tier would be on offer through one of them.

It’s no secret that most major streaming services are getting more expensive, especially on the ad-free plans. It’s also easy for folks to cancel a subscription and switch to another platform for a while. Discounted bundles could help streaming services convince customers to stick around for longer. That’s key for a number of reasons. For one thing, the more users they have on ad-supported tiers, the easier it will be for them to get advertisers on board.

Netflix has said that its ad supported-plan, which debuted a year ago, is off to a slower start than expected. It has 15 million monthly active users on that tier, which is accounting for an increasingly large percentage of new signups. WBD hasn’t disclosed how many people subscribe to Max’s ad-supported tier, but CEO David Zaslav said this week its streaming service is “losing billions of dollars.”

Use a Ziploc Bag to Separate the Fat From Your Turkey Drippings

While a basic roux and some decent stock will get you a good enough gravy, it’s the drippings that really make it chef’s-kiss worthy. Drippings are exactly what they sound like—as your protein is cooking, the fat and juices that cook off are intensely flavored. Unlike stock, they have a complexity and depth that…

How SIM Swappers Straight-Up Rob T-Mobile Stores

An anonymous reader shares a report: A young man sits in a car, pointing a cellphone camera out of the window, seemingly trying to remain undetected. As he breathes heavily in anticipation, he peers at a T-Mobile store across the road from where he is parked.

Suddenly, there is some commotion inside. An accomplice grabs something off a table where a T-Mobile employee is sitting. The accomplice, dressed in a mask and black baseball cap, then bursts out of the store and clumsily sprints towards the car. The man in the vehicle starts laughing, then giggling uncontrollably like a child. The pair got what they came for: a T-Mobile employee’s tablet, the sort workers use everyday when dealing with customer support issues or setting up a new phone.

To the people in the car, what this tablet is capable of is much more valuable than iPad hardware itself. The tablet lets them essentially become T-Mobile. It can grant them the ability to take over target phone numbers, and redirect any text messages or calls for the victim to the hacker’s own device, as part of a hack called a SIM swap. From there, they can easily break into email, cryptocurrency, and social media accounts.

Starlink bug frustrates users: “They don’t have tech support? Just a FAQ? WTF?”

Starlink’s lack of traditional customer support options is making life difficult today for new users affected by a bug that reset their accounts. A bunch of customers received an email from no-reply@starlink.com last night that said, “Your Starlink Account Has Been Reset. All pending orders and deposits have been refunded. You are welcome to visit Starlink.com to place a new order at any time using the same email address.”

One Ars reader who got the account-reset email contacted us about the problem, and many others are complaining in Reddit threads. Starlink’s account-recovery page that allows users to request password resets with an email address or phone number hasn’t been working for them.

“When I try to reset my password via the email option, I get the error ‘User not found,'” we were told by Adam, a Starlink customer in Alabama who preferred that we not publish his last name. When Adam tried to reset his password by entering his phone number, he received a text message with a password-reset link. But that didn’t work, either. “After I type in a new password, I get the error message ‘User disabled,'” Adam told us.

Netflix releases first teaser for live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender

The Netflix live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender will hit Netflix on February 22, 2024.

Fresh off its critically acclaimed live-action adaptation of the hugely popular anime series One Piece, Netflix has released the first official teaser for yet another live-action adaptation: Avatar: The Last Airbender, based on the animated Nickelodeon TV series of the same name. As we’ve noted before, Netflix has a mixed track record for these anime adaptations, but if the teaser is any indication, The Last Airbender could join One Piece as another smashing success for the streaming platform.

(Some spoilers for the anime series below, but no major reveals.)

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original anime series was set in an Asian-inspired world where certain chosen individuals have the ability to telekinetically manipulate one of four elements (earth, air, water, and fire)—a practice known as “bending.” Each generation, there is one Avatar who can bend all four elements and is thus responsible for maintaining harmony among the four elemental nations, as well as being a link between the physical and spirit worlds.

Tumblr is Downscaling After Failing To 'Turn Around' the Site

Tumblr is downscaling its ambitions after failing to reach goals for a new audience, aiming to move some staff members to other divisions of parent company Automattic. From a report: A leaked memo, which circulated on Tumblr and was confirmed in a Verge comment by Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg, says that “the majority” of Tumblr’s non-support, safety, and moderation staff will “switch to other divisions.” In follow-up posts on Tumblr, Mullenweg stated that Automattic is planning “a more focused approach in 2024,” including an emphasis on the “core functionality” of the site.

[…] It describes implementing a backup plan to “reflect and decide where else we should concentrate our energy together” without laying off staff from Automattic — which also operates the WordPress.com and WordPress VIP hosting services. “This plan is happening now.” That involves transferring the majority of 139 people on a team identified as covering product development, marketing, and other tasks outside support, moderation, and security.

Microsoft pulls OneDrive update that would quiz you before letting you quit

Microsoft briefly tested a drop-down survey that you would need to fill out before you could quit the OneDrive app.

Modern versions of Windows have become more annoying as time has gone on, pushing additional Microsoft products and services on users who are just trying to turn on their computers and get something done. Often, as we’ve covered, these notifications and reminders ignore or actively push back against user intent—prompting you to sign up for Microsoft 365 if you already said no, or trying to make you use Edge or Bing after you’ve already installed Chrome.

Microsoft took another step down this path this week when it began testing a new addition to the Windows OneDrive app that would force users to explain themselves when quitting the app. Initially spotted by NeoWin, the survey took the form of a drop-down menu, not unlike the ones you sometimes see when you try to unsubscribe from marketing or fundraising mailing lists.

Until you chose an answer from the drop-down, the “quit” button would be grayed out, preventing you from actually closing OneDrive.
