Huis Ten Bosch Wants Decision on Casino Project

Akihabara News (Tokyo) — President Kotaro Takamura of the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo city, Nagasaki Prefecture, has requested that the central government come to a quick decision on whether or not to grant a license to the major casino resort project that could be built next door.

“Our business strategy would be completely different depending on whether or not it will be built,” he observed. He added that “Japan’s tourism industry is at a major turning point.”

Takamura has just been brought in to rejuvenate Huis Ten Bosch, a theme park based on traditional Dutch culture, after the coronavirus downturn. He expressed the view that the park needs to expand its attractions in order to retain its status as a major tourist draw in western Japan.

Takamura previously worked at Tokyo Disney Resort, where he had a key role in expanding DisneySea attractions.

Last September, Huis Ten Bosch was acquired by PAG, one of Asia’s largest investment companies, after a long period owned by the travel company H.I.S. The purchase price was around ¥100 billion (US$675 million).

Nagasaki Prefecture and the Casinos Austria consortium submitted their proposal to build a ¥438 billion (US$3 billion) casino resort in April 2022, but eighteen months later the central government has yet to decide on whether or not to license it. Tokyo is reportedly concerned that the project may lack the financing to deliver the Integrated Resort on the scale which has been promised.

The SEC is suing Elon Musk for refusing to testify in Twitter investigation

Elon Musk is once again in the crosshairs of the Securities and Exchange Commision (SEC). The regulator, which has been investigating Musk’s Twitter takeover, is now suing the owner of X after he failed to appear for previously-scheduled testimony, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The SEC’s investigation dates back to 2022, when it opened a probe into Musk’s delayed disclosure of his stake in Twitter, which was at the time a publicly-traded company. Musk was 10 days late in filing paperwork, required under US securities law, disclosing his investment in Twitter. The delay may have earned him as much as $156 million, and also made him the target of a class-action lawsuit from former Twitter shareholders.

Musk had been scheduled to testify in the SEC investigation into the matter last month, The Wall Street Journal reports. But Musk failed to appear at a scheduled meeting in San Francisco, and later gave a “blanket refusal to appear for testimony” when the SEC tried to reschedule. The regulator is now asking a San Francisco federal court to force Musk to comply with its subpoena.

It’s hardly the first time Musk has found himself on the wrong side of the SEC, which he has repeatedly ridiculed over the years. The Tesla CEO was charged with securities fraud over a now-infamous 2018 tweet claiming he had “funding secured” to take the electric car maker private. Musk eventually settled with the SEC, paying a $20 million fine and giving up his position as chairman of Tesla’s board. Musk is, however, still fighting a provision of that SEC settlement requiring a so-called “Twitter-sitter” to sign-off on some of Musk’s Tesla-related tweets.

X didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Microsoft Won't Say If Its Products Were Exploited By Spyware Zero-Days

Microsoft has released patches to fix zero-day vulnerabilities in two popular open source libraries that affect several Microsoft products, including Skype, Teams and its Edge browser. But Microsoft won’t say if those zero-days were exploited to target its products, or if the company knows either way. From a report: The two vulnerabilities — known as zero-days because developers had no advance notice to fix the bugs — were discovered last month, and both bugs have been actively exploited to target individuals with spyware, according to researchers at Google and Citizen Lab. The bugs were discovered in two common open source libraries, webp and libvpx, which are widely integrated into browsers, apps and phones to process images and videos. The ubiquity of these libraries coupled with a warning from security researchers that the bugs were abused to plant spyware prompted a rush by tech companies, phone makers and app developers to update the vulnerable libraries in their products.

In a brief statement Monday, Microsoft said it had rolled out fixes addressing the two vulnerabilities in the webp and libvpx libraries which it had integrated into its products, and acknowledged that exploits exist for both vulnerabilities. When reached for comment, a Microsoft spokesperson declined to say if its products had been exploited in the wild, or if the company has the ability to know. Security researchers at Citizen Lab said in early September that they had discovered evidence that NSO Group customers, using the company’s Pegasus spyware, had exploited a vulnerability found in the software of an up-to-date and fully patched iPhone.

Apple considered ditching Google for DuckDuckGo in Safari’s private mode

In iOS 17, Apple recently made it easier to use alternatives to Google search in private browsing mode—but the company considered going even further by making DuckDuckGo, which is marketed as a more private alternative, the default choice in that context.

As reported by Bloomberg’s Leah Nylen, the information came to light when Amit Mehta, the US District Judge who is handling the US antitrust trial over Google search, unsealed transcripts of testimonies by DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg and Apple SVP of machine learning and AI strategy John Giannandrea. Giannandrea worked as Google’s head of search before his current role at Apple.

Weinberg claimed in his testimony that his company had 20 or so meetings with Apple about the possibility and that he believed the change would happen based on prior DuckDuckGo integrations make their way into Safari. He even said this was the one proposed integration that didn’t make it “all the way through the finish line.”

Ferrocene released as open source

Ferrous Systems has announced
that its Ferrocene Rust compiler will be released under the Apache-2.0 and
MIT licenses.

Ferrocene is the main Rust compiler – rustc – but quality managed
and qualified for use in automotive and industrial environments
(currently by ISO 26262 and IEC 61508) by Ferrous Systems. It
operates as a downstream to the Rust project, further increasing
its testing and quality on specific platforms.

The license is free, but this is not being run as an open-source project;
specifically, contributions from the “general public” are not accepted.

Lockheed CEO Pitches Pentagon on Subscription Software

A parallel acquisition system — buying needed apps by monthly or yearly subscription to meet changing mission requirements — could improve deterrence by complicating an enemy’s war planning, Lockheed Martin’s top executive suggested Wednesday. From a report: Jim Taiclet, Lockheed’s CEO, said the idea behind this approach is similar to allowing a customer to buy a 5G phone in Seoul and have it operate with new applications as needed in Washington. Although “digital insertion” in this manner “hasn’t caught on yet” inside the Pentagon, across the tech industry or the broad industrial base, Taiclet said it has the potential “to move that deterrence goal post every three to six months.”

Traditionally, the Defense Department and defense industry think in big contracts for platforms that take years to design, build and manufacture and service. Taiclet, however, sees large defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin as a bridge from the subscription-based tech sector to the big-contract Pentagon acquisition process. “We have to get our expertise together.” He added this approach “is starting to get some traction” among large investors in the tech sector.

Vacuum suction-mounted wireless TV zip lines off faulty walls to safety

Wall-mounting a big-screen TV can be stressful. You typically need to bore holes in your wall, making precise measurements and location selection critical. And when it comes to stability, you either have to bet on your own skills or have a handier person enter your home (and, possibly, pay them). The upcoming Displace TV seeks to address these concerns with a nail-less, hole-less mounting system that allows the 55-inch screen to zip line down to foam-padded safety if mount security is jeopardized.

Displace, a startup founded in 2022, announced the Displace TV at the CES 2023 trade show in January. The TV is 4K OLED and wireless, meaning it has no power cord or ports. Similar to LG’s OLED M TVs, it gets its content from what Displace calls a “base control unit” computer placed near the television.

This week, Displace demoed new “safety features” for the TV made in response to concerns about the device’s proprietary “active-loop vacuum technology.” The vacuum tech is supposed to securely adhere the TV to painted, ceramic, or glass walls without holes, nails, or other tools. But it relies on TV battery power.
