EU might impose further regulation on WhatsApp

WhatsApp may face greater regulation in the European Union thanks to an increase in users on its open channels. The platform announced Friday that these feeds for news sources, public figures and more averaged approximately 46.8 million users in the EU during the last half of 2024. This increase in users means WhatsApp’s open channels, akin to a social network, now qualify as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

The DSA uses the labels very large online platform or search engine when the entity has more than 45 million monthly users in the EU. These designations allow the European Commission greater regulatory power around transparent advertising, content moderation, an annual independent audit, data sharing with the EU and more. Relevant online platforms must also mitigate and assess the risk of damaging and illegal content.

WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, is already designated as a VLOP (and not happily), alongside ByteDance, Amazon, Google and more. The European Commission will now need to determine whether to give WhatsApp the designation.

The Out-of-Touch Adults’ Guide to Kid Culture: Cave Diving Memes

This week, I explain why generations A and Z are eating rotten meat, making fun of cave explorers, showing off their emergency contacts, and becoming very emotionally invested in an angler fish. Everyone is having a very normal week.

What do all the cave diving memes mean?

If your various social media feeds are full of videos of upside down shoes and boots in different locations, you’re witnessing “cave diving” memes. While “cave diving” actually refers to underwater cave exploration, the memes are not about that: Younger people are making jokes about the way cave explorers will wedge themselves into tiny crevices until all anyone can see are the bottoms of their boots. Here’s a real life example:

And here are some of comedic takes.

How a cave diver checks their oil:

A cave diver going through a door:

A cave diver notices a crack in the wall:

A cave diver at the Sydney Opera House:

I’m sure you get the idea.

The meme spread because it’s easy to do, and it’s funny, but it’s partly based on a photo taken of the boots of John Edward Jones, who wriggled into a tiny crack in Nutty Putty Cave in 2009 and could not wriggle back out. Despite the efforts of hundreds of rescuers, Jones was so firmly wedged in the tiny fissure, nothing could be done to free him. He died 28 hours later while his would-be rescuers looked on helplessly. Way less funny than the memes.

What is “high meat?”

For the past several years, young people online have been sharing stories and recipes for “high meat,” or “fermented meat,” which is raw meat that is left to rot, then eaten. “Why?” you might be asking. Because it supposedly gets you high.

Do not follow the recipe below:

To be fair, making your own high meat, also known as “fermented meat,” is not a widespread trend, but it’s interesting because it’s on the far fringes of two larger movements. High meat’s proponents are generally people who follow a “carnivore” or “paleo” all-meat diet—like this guy. The “it gets you high” part puts fermented meat on the fringes of the psychonaut community, where people are always searching for novel substances to alter their minds. It also reminds me of the many hoax “things that get you high” that crop up every few years among young people, like Jenkem or smoking banana peels.

Fermented meat seems like a way of making an already extreme diet even more hardcore. Burly carnivore dudes eating rotten meat remind me of those hippies for whom veganism isn’t enough, so they become raw food vegans or fruitarians. I almost hate to break it to the hardest-of-the-hardcore cavemen out there, but a ton of people eat raw, fermented meat all the time: pepperoni and salami are made of fermented, raw meat, and so are a bunch of other common foods. They’re made by professionals using time-tested methods so they (usually) don’t give you food poisoning, and they don’t get you high, but still: raw fermented meat, right in my sandwich.

What does “get it twisted” mean?

“Get it twisted” is a, well, twist on the older phrase, “don’t get it twisted.” When someone says “don’t get it twisted,” it’s a promise that what is to follow will be the unvarnished truth. When someone says “get it twisted,” they’re going to tell you lies. It started in the online gambling community, where a couple of well-known streamers overused the phrase “don’t get it twisted” leading to remixes where a speech like this:

became this:

“Jerkmate Ranked: The Game” released for real

Last month I covered the internet making funny memes about “Jerkmate Ranked,” an imaginary competitive video game based on the pornographic media platform. This week, in a case of life imitating memes, Jerkmate actually released a game. “Jerkmate Ranked: The Game” doesn’t create a leaderboard based on the amount of time one spends on the site though. It’s a “clicker” game where the users click the screen to make a robot enjoy itself. The more clicks, the higher you climb on the leaderboard. I try not to judge, but maybe there’s something else people could be doing?

What is the “my emergency contact” trend?

Not all young people are eating rotten meat and clicking for no reason. There are normal people out there too, like the people making “my emergency contact” videos. This wholesome, funny meme template involves showing your partner doing something silly with the text “my emergency contact” laid over it, as if to say, “Can you believe this person is who the hospital will call if I’m in an accident?” That’s really all there is to it, but the result is a funny, touching reminder that we’re all a bunch of goofballs.

Here are a couple examples:

Viral videos of the week: the heroic angler fish and Wiwiwi kitten

This week, two animal videos are going viral for very different reasons.

First up, the sad tale of the heroic angler fish. Last week, scientists off the coast of Spain filmed a black seadevil fish, aka humpbacked angler, for the first time ever. They usually stay hundreds of meters below sea level, but this one, for reasons unknown, swam right up to the surface. Then it died, leading people to imagine an angler that only wanted to see the sun:

I mean, people got emotional over the fish:

Or pretended they were going to save it:

I’m gonna leave things on upbeat note though: This week’s second viral video isn’t emotionally wrenching at all. It’s just a kitten being so cute that people all over the world are watching the little guy eat its little food and say “wi-wi-wi” and “oooh!” Adorable.

A milestone for reproducible openSUSE

The Reproducible-openSUSE project has announced
that it has created a usable version of openSUSE with 100% reproducible
packages.

[Bernhard] Wiedemann took on this 4-month-long project to create a
fork of openSUSE that has 100% bit-reproducible packages. So far
ring0 (aka bootstrap) and ring1 with 3,300 software packages have
all successfully been patched and tested.

This build is not yet recommended for production use, though.

By the end of today, NASA’s workforce will be about 10 percent smaller

Spread across NASA’s headquarters and 10 field centers, which dot the United States from sea to sea, the space agency has had a workforce of nearly 18,000 civil servants.

However, by the end of today, that number will have shrunk by about 10 percent since the beginning of the second Trump administration four weeks ago. And the world’s preeminent space agency may still face significant additional cuts.

According to sources, about 750 employees at NASA accepted the “fork in the road” offer to take deferred resignation from the space agency later this year. This sounds like a lot of people, but generally about 1,000 people leave the agency every year, so effectively, many of these people might just be getting paid to leave jobs they were already planning to exit from.

Acer To Raise US Laptop Prices 10% After Tariffs

Acer will raise laptop prices in the United States by 10% next month due to Trump administration tariffs on Chinese imports, CEO Jason Chen said. “We will have to adjust the end user price to reflect the tariff,” Chen said. “We think 10 percent probably will be the default price increase because of the import tax.”

The Taiwan-based company, the fifth-largest computer seller in the U.S. market behind HP, Dell, Lenovo and Apple, could add hundreds of dollars to its high-end laptops that cost up to $3,700. Chen said Acer is exploring manufacturing options outside China, including possible U.S. production. The company has already moved desktop computer assembly out of China following earlier 25% tariffs during Trump’s first term. The 10% tariff imposed this month affects nearly 80% of U.S. laptop imports from China.

[$] FUSE folio conversion confusion

Kernel developers have been working to convert various internal interfaces to
use

folios
; while this process has been progressing, there is still the
occasional regression introduced by the change. In December 2024, it was
discovered that installing a

Flatpak
application could trigger a filesystem bug in
the kernel that would cause the software to read incorrect data from the disk.
The problem was quickly fixed — only for an another problem caused by the folio
rewrite to pop up in the same kernel subsystem. This was discovered by an Arch
Linux user, who noticed that selecting files in a Flatpak application was
causing kernel crashes. Now both bugs are fixed, but there may be more bugs to find.

3D Printable Cat Wearing Cone Of Shame Desk Lamp

This is a 3D printable desk lamp that looks like a cat wearing a cone of shame. Its creator hellgy describes it as, “A lamp to look like your cat when your cat is looking like a lamp.” Plus when it’s on the eyes glow like you took a picture of a cat in the dark with the flash on. That’s cool. You can get the 3D printable files for free HERE, and the recommended lamp hardware HERE for $13. Or you can provide your own lighting solution. I’m going to use lasers instead and accidentally set the tapestry hanging over my bed on fire!

Man Completes 120-Star Speedrun Of Super Mario 64 While Blindfolded

This is a video from Great Big Story highlighting the life of world record setting speedrunner Bubzia, who speedruns video games while blindfolded. His biggest achievement to date? Completing a 120-star speedrun of Super Mario 64 in a single 11 hour and 22 minute sitting. Good lord. For reference, the non-blindfolded record is 1 hour and 35 minutes. Clearly, that blindfold is not a performance enhancing mod. Bubzia has recently quit his job to become a full-time (professional?) speedrunner, and I wish him the best. My roommate? I wish him the absolute worst. Just kidding, I don’t wish bad on anyone. Except him. I hope he falls in a manhole on his way home from work and the Ninja Turtles mistake him for a Foot Soldier.

One of our favorite budget robot vacuums is 44 percent off right now

The eufy RoboVac 11S Max is one of our favorite budget robot vacuums, and it’s now 44 percent off at Amazon, making it only $140. This affordable robot vacuum from a few years back can still trade blows against newer models even without Wi-Fi connectivity.

The 11S Max has three power modes — Standard, BoostIQ and Max, and the company claims a noise level of around 55 dB. Even so, its suction power is nothing to scoff at. And should it accidentally try to swallow a charging cable, the beeping alerts are loud enough to hear from the opposite end of an apartment.

As with the latest robot vacuums, the 11S Max has sensors that prevent collisions and falling down the stairs. Our tests show that it occasionally bumped into objects but also avoided the tester’s cat play tunnel when other budget vacuums didn’t.

The 11S Max doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but we didn’t find that to be a major issue in our testing. The remote control has buttons for scheduling auto cleaning, selecting cleaning modes, manually returning the robot to the charging base and more.

Can public trust in science survive a second battering?

Public trust in science has been in the spotlight in recent years: After the US presidential election in November, one Wall Street Journal headline declared that “Science Lost America’s Trust.” Another publication called 2024 “the year of distrust in science.”

Some of that may be due to legitimate concerns: Public health officials have been criticized for their lack of transparency during critical moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic. And experts have noted the influence of political factors. For instance, the first Trump administration repeatedly undermined scientists—a trend repeating in his second term so far.

But what does the research say about where public trust in science, doctors, and health care institutions actually stands? In recent years, researchers have been increasingly looking into quantifying these sentiments. And indeed, multiple surveys and studies have reported the COVID-19 pandemic correlated with a decline in trust in the years following the initial outbreak. This decrease, though, seems to be waning as new research shows a clearer picture of trust across time. One 2024 study suggests Trump’s attacks on science during his first term did not have the significant impact many experts feared—and may have even boosted confidence among certain segments of the population.

Five Renter-Friendly Hardware Swaps to Upgrade Your Home

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

When it comes to upgrading your home’s aesthetic, you don’t need to spend a lot of time or money to have an impact. In addition to inexpensive improvements that increase your home’s comfort and efficiency, there are a number of small swaps that can have a big impact without busting your budget.

All of these swaps are renter-friendly—they are unlikely to cause damage in the installation process and are easy to return to their original state. Simply save what you remove and replace when you leave.

Get new switch plate and outlet covers

Remove the cheap plastic light switch and outlet covers around your home and replace them with plates made of brushed metal or wood, or look for uniquely shaped or painted covers from marketplaces like Etsy. Hardware stores also sell paintable covers so you can either blend them into your walls or add an accent color.

Wall plates are among the easiest and least expensive swaps you can make while adding a decorative element to your space: A set of six duplex outlet covers in brass costs just $20 on Amazon, and all you need to do is unscrew the plates from the wall using a screwdriver.

Replace vent covers

Standard-issue vent covers installed in your floors, walls, and ceilings can also be swapped for more decorative versions with minimal effort and at a relatively low cost. You can replace both registers, which have louvers and dampers to control air flow, as well as decorative grills. You’ll definitely see a difference when you get rid of plastic vent covers in favor of those made of metal or wood, but you can also find more ornate designs or grill patterns in the same material as your existing covers for less than $20 apiece.

Be sure to select a material that makes sense for your space—rust-free aluminum is a good choice for bathrooms, for example—and take care to measure properly before purchasing new covers. Floor grills can often be dropped into place, while those in walls and ceilings will require mounting hardware.

Consider new hardware

Cabinet handles and drawer pulls are another easy swap that can significantly change the look of your space. If you buy hardware that’s the same size as what you’re removing, the upgrade is as easy as unscrewing the old and installing the new. Otherwise, you may need to fill existing holes with putty and drill new ones—so if you’re renting, consider how easy it’ll be to return your cabinets and drawers to their original state when you move out.

You’ll certainly find expensive hardware options, but you can get decent-looking handles and pulls from Amazon or your hardware store for less than $1 per piece.

Swap out builder-grade mirrors

Builder-grade home features—usually seen as basic and cheap—don’t necessarily need to be changed out, but upgrading a few here and there for the sake of your design aesthetic can go a long way. Builder-grade mirrors are often frameless pieces of beveled glass fastened to the wall and are easy to remove and replace with a more decorative alternative. Look for a gently used mirror that’s more to your liking on Facebook Marketplace, or consider adding a low-cost DIY decorative edge to your existing mirror.

Go for new light fixtures

Another builder-grade feature that you can swap with relative ease for the sake of your home’s aesthetic: light fixtures (especially the dreaded boob light). This project does require some basic electrical knowledge and a few materials, but it is totally possible to DIY—just don’t forget to turn off the breaker before touching any fixture.

Former Staffers Say India’s Biggest IT Firm Was Gaming the US Visa System

India’s Tata Consultancy Services allegedly manipulated U.S. visa programs by falsifying management credentials for foreign workers, according to lawsuits and federal data obtained by Bloomberg News. TCS, India’s largest IT services firm, received upwards of 6,500 L-1A visas for managers from October 2019 through September 2023, more than the next seven largest recipients combined. In contrast, TCS categorized fewer than 600 of its 31,000 U.S.-based employees as executives and managers in a 2022 federal report.

Former TCS manager Anil Kini alleged in a lawsuit that in January 2017, a senior manager ordered him to alter organizational charts to hide discrepancies for employees without management responsibilities. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found “credible documentary evidence” that TCS “frequently falsifies documents in support of L-1 visa applications,” according to a 2019 letter. L-1A visas for managers, unlike H-1B visas, have no pay requirements or caps.

TCS has denied wrongdoing, saying it “strongly refutes these inaccurate allegations by certain ex-employees, which have previously been dismissed by multiple courts.”

Price as tested $2,299 (pre-order at Amazon, get notified at Asus)

I really like Asus’ ROG Flow Z13 for what it is: a convertible tablet with way more gaming power than you would think. Looking at this thing, you might expect to see it propped up at an airport bar, in front of somebody talking into wireless headphones about Tim in Product. But there’s a lot of frame-rendering and multicore processing power inside this glass-fronted slab with a keyboard cover. It’s an impressive showcase for AMD’s leap forward in integrated power.

The Z13 can rip through Hitman and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on their highest settings at its native 2560×1600 resolution. Turn the resolution down to a reasonable-for-this-size 1920×1080 and you can play Cyberpunk 2077 at its Ultra settings at 45–55 frames per second, depending on your power and upscaling preferences. On a device that is essentially a beefy Microsoft Surface, this is no small thing. The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 “Strix Halo” inside the Z13, with the latest Ryzen 8060S GPU built into it, is not just capable—it’s a step up from most of the gaming laptops out there.

As a Windows convertible, it has some interesting tech and notable upgrades from the 2022 product that was also called the ROG Flow Z13. Its webcam works with Windows Hello and logs you in 95 percent of the time. The keyboard has decent travel, the trackpad has a pleasant smoothness, and you can prop the thing up anywhere along the solid kickstand’s 170-degree range. It’s a Copilot+ PC if that matters to you, and when you’re not pushing ray-traced gaming frames, its battery life is no slouch.
