What happens to a car when the company behind its software goes under?

Imagine turning the key or pressing the start button of your car—and nothing happens. Not because the battery is dead or the engine is broken but because a server no longer answers. For a growing number of cars, that scenario isn’t hypothetical.

As vehicles become platforms for software and subscriptions, their longevity is increasingly tied to the survival of the companies behind their code. When those companies fail, the consequences ripple far beyond a bad app update and into the basic question of whether a car still functions as a car.

Over the years, automotive software has expanded from performing rudimentary engine management and onboard diagnostics to powering today’s interconnected, software-defined vehicles. Smartphone apps can now handle tasks like unlocking doors, flashing headlights, and preconditioning cabins—and some models won’t unlock at all unless a phone running the manufacturer’s app is within range.

Netflix is adapting the board game Ticket to Ride

Netflix has been in the game adaptation business for a while now, but until recently most of its attention had been on adapting video games. That’s still very much happening, but the streaming giant is also now buying up rights for board game IP too, with the latest being Asmodee’s Ticket to Ride.

Netflix will look to greenlight a number of projects spanning TV, film and “additional formats,” it wrote in a press release. The first of these will be a feature film written by Ben Mekler and Chris Amick. Ticket to Ride creator Alan R. Moon will serve as an executive producer on the project, which will be the game’s first on-screen adaptation. Exactly what it will look like is not yet clear, but the internet already has plenty of theories.

Ticket to Ride is a train-themed turn-based strategy and route-building game first released over 20 years ago. Since then it has gone on to ship more than 20 million copies and has been translated into over 30 languages. It’s also been given the video game adaptation treatment before.

This is actually the second of Asmodee’s IP that Netflix has acquired the rights to, after announcing last year that Catan will also be making its way to screens in various forms. And it isn’t just interested in scripted TV and movie opportunities. In early 2025, the company also signed a deal with Hasbro to adapt Monopoly into a TV game show.

Blind Listening Test Finds Audiophiles Unable To Distinguish Copper Cable From a Banana or Wet Mud

An anonymous reader shares a report: A moderator on diyAudio set up an experiment to determine whether listeners could differentiate between audio run through pro audio copper wire, a banana, and wet mud. Spoiler alert: the results indicated that users were unable to accurately distinguish between these different ‘interfaces.’

Pano, the moderator who built the experiment, invited other members on the forum to listen to various sound clips with four different versions: one taken from the original CD file, with the three others recorded through 180cm of pro audio copper wire, via 20cm of wet mud, through 120cm of old microphone cable soldered to US pennies, and via a 13cm banana, and 120cm of the same setup as earlier.

Initial test results showed that it’s extremely difficult for listeners to correctly pick out which audio track used which wiring setup. “The amazing thing is how much alike these files sound. The mud should sound perfectly awful, but it doesn’t,” Pano said. “All of the re-recordings should be obvious, but they aren’t.”

This High-Capacity Anker Power Bank Gives You 200W Portable Charging for Just $80

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

The Anker Prime 20,000mAh 200W Power Bank is built for the moments when your phone is at 3%, your laptop is at 8%, and there is no outlet in sight. Right now, it is selling for $79.99 on Woot, down from its listed $139.99. That is a $60 drop, or about 43% off. The same model is also $79.99 refurbished on Amazon, so this price puts a new unit on par with what you would normally pay for a refurb. Also, it comes with a two-year manufacturer’s limited warranty. Shipping is free for Amazon Prime members, while others pay $6, and this deal runs for 11 more days or until it sells out.

This is a high-output power bank meant for more than topping off a phone. It has two USB-C ports and one USB-A port, with a combined 200W total output. Each USB-C port can deliver up to 100W on its own, which is enough to charge two devices at full speed—Anker says it can boost an iPhone 16 Pro to 30% in 15 minutes. In practice, its 20,000mAh capacity translates to roughly three to four full smartphone charges or a significant recharge for a light laptop. Its digital display shows remaining battery percentage along with real-time input and output, so you can see exactly how much power is flowing in or out. When the battery itself runs low, it supports 100W input over USB-C and can recharge in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, provided you use a compatible high-wattage charger.

As for its portability, at 4.9 by 2.1 by 1.9 inches, it is compact for the power it offers, but it is still heavier than basic 10,000mAh banks. This makes more sense in a backpack than in a pocket. That said, it does not support app control, which may matter if you want deeper monitoring. For frequent travelers, remote workers, or anyone charging multiple devices at once, the performance matches the current price. For casual use, it may have more capacity and output than you actually need.

RAM shortage hits Valve’s four-year-old Steam Deck, now available “intermittently”

Earlier this month, Valve announced it was delaying the release of its new Steam Machine desktop and Steam Frame VR headset due to memory and storage shortages that have been cascading across the PC industry since late 2025. But those shortages are also coming for products that have already launched.

Valve had added a note to its Steam Deck page noting that the device would be “out-of-stock intermittently in some regions due to memory and storage shortages.” None of Valve’s three listed Steam Deck configurations are currently available to buy, nor are any of the certified refurbished Steam Deck configurations that Valve sometimes offers.

Valve hasn’t announced any price increases for the Deck, at least not yet—the 512GB OLED model is still listed at $549 and the 1TB version at $649. But the basic 256GB LCD model has been formally discontinued now that it has sold out, increasing the Deck’s de facto starting price from $399 to $549. Valve announced in December that it was ending production on the LCD version of the Deck and that it wouldn’t be restocked once it sold out.

WordPress adds an AI assistant

Web designers of the world: The Automattic-owned WordPress.com is further embracing AI on its platform. On Tuesday, it expanded its one-off AI site builder into a persistent AI assistant for editing and media creation.

In the site editor, the AI assistant can help with site-wide structure and design choices. For example, you can ask the chatbot to “give me more font options that feel clean and professional or “change my site colors to be brighter and bolder.” It also includes image generation and writing assistance, such as “rewrite this to sound more confident.” (Who needs learning when you have automation!)

The assistant can also now be integrated into your site’s media library. It can generate new images or make prompted edits to your existing ones. Examples include “update this image to be black and white” or “replace this stack of pancakes with waffles.” (Just don’t fake that if your business sells breakfast food, okay?) WordPress says the assistant understands your website’s look and brand and can tailor the media accordingly.

WordPress also added the AI assistant to the platform’s team chat, Block Notes. You can summon the chatbot from within your team chat threads.

The tool is available for WordPress.com’s Business or Commerce plans. (Or, if you made your site using the AI builder, it’s enabled by default, no matter which plan you use.) The feature works best with the platform’s block themes; it’s much more limited with classic ones. You’ll find the toggle to activate the AI assistant in your site settings under the “AI tools” section.

Apple’s Next macOS Update Could Extend the Lifespan of Your MacBook’s Battery

With iOS 18, Apple introduced a feature that allowed you to set a charge limit on your iPhone. The goal was to extend the lifespan of the battery, by limiting how often you fully charge it up. Batteries age with each full charging cycle, so by preventing your battery from charging to 100% every time you keep it plugged in, you can slow down that aging process, which means your device will last longer in between charges.

Now, that same feature is coming to your Mac. Apple is currently testing the feature as part of macOS 26.4, which means you’ll soon be able to ask macOS to stop charging your laptop once the battery level hits a specific charge level. This feature is great for anyone that keeps their MacBook plugged in all the time while working: It’ll allow you to ask your MacBook to stop charging when the battery is at 80%, or at any charge level up to 100%.

Battery optimization is nothing new for macOS

Optimized Battery Charging on a MacBook.

Credit: Pranay Parab

To be clear, your MacBook ships with a battery optimization feature already, which is enabled by default. This feature automatically slows down your MacBook’s charging speed once the charge level reaches 80%. Based on your past usage habits, macOS waits to continue charging your MacBook until it thinks you’ll need to use the laptop again. So, if you plug in your MacBook at night, and you typically take it off the charger at 8 a.m., it might keep your MacBook at 80% until 7 a.m., then charge the extra 20% over the following hour.

You can check if it’s enabled by clicking the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen, and going to System Settings > Battery. Click the i button next to Battery Health and you’ll see that Optimized Battery Charging is enabled.

But this is all automated, based on how you use your MacBook. What makes this new charging feature different is that you set the charge limit manually. That way, if you work with your MacBook plugged in all day, it doesn’t need to charge to 100% whenever it thinks it should. Instead, you can keep it at any charge limit between 80% and 100%.

How to enable charge limit on your MacBook

This new feature is available with macOS 26.4, which is currently available in the Developer Beta channel for Mac updates. I strongly recommend against installing this on your primary MacBook, as issues with the beta could mean losing data or bricking your laptop. Unless Apple decides to pull the feature, it should ship to everyone with the general release of macOS 26.4.

If you have a spare MacBook where you’ve installed macOS 26.4 beta, you can go to System Settings > Battery, where you’ll see the “Charge Limit” feature listed under Battery Health. Here, you can manually limit the maximum charging level between 80% and 100%.

Third-party battery management apps are better

While Apple’s methods to reduce battery aging are good enough for most people, you can do a lot more with third-party battery management apps. Those apps will allow you to do more than just set a charge limit. For instance, you can start charging the Mac when the battery hits 50% and stop charging when it’s at 80%, or stop charging if the battery is too hot.

Steam Under Fire As Game Devs Report Rising Hate Speech And Weak Moderation
As a platform for selling games, Steam has garnered some deserved praise for its lax approach to moderation, allowing developers to break into the market and players to speak as harshly as they like on awful PC ports or game-breaking updates. That laissez-faire methodology also seems to have some negative consequences,  as it is reportedly

Micron’s PCIe 6.0 SSD Hits Mass Production at 28 GB/s

Micron has begun mass production of the 9650 series, the industry’s first PCIe 6.0 SSD, capable of sequential read speeds up to 28 GB/s and random read performance of 5.5 million IOPS — roughly double the throughput of the fastest PCIe 5.0 drives available today.

The drive targets AI and data center workloads and ships in E1.S and E3.S form factors across two variants: the Pro, available in capacities up to 30.72 TB, and the endurance-oriented Max, topping out at 25.6 TB. Both variants share the same peak sequential and random speeds but diverge on mixed workloads and endurance ratings — the Max 25.6 TB carries a random endurance rating of 140,160 TBW compared to 56,064 TBW on the Pro 30.72 TB.

Power draw holds at 25 watts, unchanged from high-end PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSDs, though the 9650 is Micron’s first drive to support liquid cooling alongside air. Consumer platforms are not expected to adopt PCIe 6.0 until 2030.

Warner Bros. rejects Paramount again but asks for “best and final offer”

Warner Bros. Discovery is giving Paramount one more week to make its best and final offer, leaving the door open for a deal that could upend its merger agreement with Netflix.

Officially, Warner Bros. is still committed to Netflix. The company today scheduled a special meeting date of March 20 and recommended that shareholders vote for the Netflix merger. But Warner Bros. is simultaneously opening negotiations with Paramount despite calling all of its previous offers deficient.

“Netflix has provided WBD a limited waiver under the terms of WBD’s merger agreement with Netflix, permitting WBD to engage in discussions with Paramount Skydance for a seven-day period ending on February 23, 2026 to seek clarity for WBD stockholders and provide PSKY the ability to make its best and final offer,” Warner Bros. said today.

10 Shows Like ‘Ponies’ You Should Watch Next

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Impeccable period vibes are a highlight of Ponies, the Peacock spy show starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson. They play a couple of housewives living in Moscow with their CIA agent husbands, at least until their spouses are killed under mysterious circumstances. In order to get to the bottom of things, the two convince the Moscow station chief that they could be useful as agents themselves. He figures, hey—who’d ever suspect a couple of secretaries? You can stream Ponies on Peacock, and then stream these stories of other unexpected spies.

The Americans (2013 – 2018)

Set during the Cold War 1980s, and created by former CIA officer Joe Weisberg, Americans follows Soviet KGB intelligence agents Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys), living lives as an American couple in the DC metro area—and raising their American-born children. The critically acclaimed (and popular) show makes much of its period setting and a central conflict that places two spies in the heart of suburban America, even as they’re tasked with undermining the Reagan-era government under which their children will grow up. Stream The Americans on Disney+ and Hulu.

Kleo (2022 – )

With this German import, we have a Cold War-era spy thriller punctuated by moments of very dark comedy. Jella Haase stars as Kleo Straub, a ruthless East German Stasi assassin who was framed for treason a couple of years before the series kicks off in 1989, and who’s now free to pursue brutal revenge. Sven Petzold (Dimitrij Schaad), meanwhile, is the hapless police officer who’s linked Kleo to a murder he’d been investigating, and pursues her before discovering that he’s in way, way over his head. Stream Kleo on Netflix.

Black Doves (2024 – )

This genre-bender has been something of a hit for Netflix—enough to have earned a second-season renewal. Keira Knightley stars as Helen Webb, wife of the Secretary of State for Defence of the U.K., and a secret spy in the employ of the mercenary spy organization of the title. She learns from her handler (Sarah Lancashire) that her lover has been killed, thus potentially blowing her cover, but luckily she has a hitman bestie (Ben Whislaw) to help her out. It’s all deliberately pulpy, with a tongue-in-cheek self-awareness that lightens the tone. Stream Black Doves on Netflix.

Homeland (2011 – 2020)

The series begins with CIA case officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) coming to suspect that that decorated Marine Corps scout sniper Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), recently rescued from an al-Qaeda compound, has been turned and is planning a terrorist attack on the United States. As she’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, her superiors don’t give Mathison’s suspicions much credence, kicking off a cat-and-mouse/is-he-or-isn’t he? game between the two. Both leads won Emmys for their performances, and the series took the Outstanding Drama prize in its first year. Stream Homeland on Hulu and Netflix.

The Sympathizer (2024)

A stellar miniseries with a reminder that boys can be spies, too. Based (kinda) on a true story, the show stars Hoa Xuande as the Captain (we know him only by that title), a member of the South Vietnamese army during the run-up to the Fall of Saigon in 1975. Except that he has a pretty big secret: He’s a spy for the communist north, and, when he’s evacuated to the United States, it’s as a double agent. His new life in sunny Southern California gets very complicated as he struggles with his old loyalties and his new life. With touches of dark comedy, great performances and some absolutely brilliant direction from showrunner Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, No Other Choice), this is an impressively unconventional period spy story. Stream The Sympathizer on HBO Max.

The Recruit (2022 – 2025)

A bit of fun in the “unlikely spy” genre, this one stars Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks, a nobody-in-particular young lawyer at the CIA who comes across an extortion threat from a former CIA asset in some otherwise boring paperwork. The discovery triggers a series of fast-paced, globetrotting adventures for which Hendricks is generally unprepared—always knowing more than he should, but not nearly enough to keep him out of trouble. It’s an adventure show more than a thriller, mostly, and a fair bit of fun for it. Stream The Recruit on Netflix.

Killing Eve (2018 – 2022)

Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer star as the two halves that form one of television’s great cat-and-mouse narratives, with Oh as Eve Polastri, a bored MI5 analyst who becomes obsessed with hunting down the brutal and notorious assassin known only as Villanelle. It starts as a professional compulsion before it becomes personal: Eve and Villanelle begin toying with each other, and it soon becomes clear that the fascination goes both ways—like Ponies, it’s the rare spy drama with two women out in front. Stream Killing Eve on Prime Video, Paramount+, Britbox, Tubi, and Netflix.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024 – )

One-upping the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie movie on which it’s based, Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as a couple of spies tasked to pose as a married couple while coordinating (and sometimes competing against one another) on missions. Smartly, each episode takes on a standalone mission in a different location, while complicating the relationship between the two and gradually upping the stakes until the season finale, which sees them pitted against each other. The show has been renewed for season two, but it’s been delayed, and it’s unclear if Glover and Erskine will be returning, or if we’ll be getting a new Mr. & Mrs. Stream Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Prime Video.

The Day of the Jackal (2024 – )

Cinematic in scope, this new adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth novel is buoyed by brilliant casting: Eddie Redmayne plays the Jackal, a steely international assassin pursued by MI6 operative Bianca Pullman, played by Lashana Lynch (putting her experience as the new 007 in No Time to Die to good use). I’m not sure there’s anything here we haven’t seen in countless other spy thrillers (including, of course, the 1973 and 1997 film adaptations), but the performances and production values are top-notch, with each episode playing out like a tense mini-movie. Stream The Day of the Jackal on Peacock.

Down Cemetery Road (2025 – )

Splitting the difference between spy and detective genres, this show (from the works of Mick Herron, writer of the more specifically spy-centric Slow Horses novels), this one starts out as a murder mystery and builds to a rather massive government conspiracy. Emma Thompson stars as hard-living, hard-drinking private investigator Zoë Boehm, hired by Ruth Wilson’s Sarah Trafford, a married art restorer whom nobody takes seriously (including and especially her husband)—even when she becomes invested in the fate of a young girl whose family is killed in a gas explosion (allegedly) down the street. The girl, whose parents were killed, disappears into the system and no one really seems to care until Sarah hires Zoë and her husband to look into it. Turns out both women are in way over their heads, as the missing girl points to a much broader conspiracy. Thompson and Wilson are a brilliantly mismatched pair, and their performances are more than worth the price of admission. Stream Down Cemetery Road on Apple TV+.

Specialized boosts Levo 4’s motor power in eMTB arms race – does DJI have the ‘big S’ worried?

Specialized’s free over-the-air update boosts peak power and torque figures on the 3.1 Motor, fitted to the Turbo Levo 4.

The S-Works Levo 4 gets a 130W power boost to 850W, while torque remains at 111Nm. The non S-Works bikes – which have less power and torque as standard – are upped to 810W and 105Nm from 666W and 101Nm.

In a landscape of power and torque top trumps – with Bosch’s 100Nm and 750W and DJI‘s 120Nm and 1,000W – it looks as though Specialized’s update is a bid to keep its motors as competitive as possible.

Four additional features have been added during the 30-minute over-the-air update.

First is a rider-matched power setting for MicroTune. This new setting is claimed to match motor assistance precisely to rider input – you put in 100W of power to the bike and the motor gives you 100W of support.

Specialized Turbo 3.1 motor power update
Downloading. Specialized Bikes

Specialized says it’s designed to give the rider the “ultimate control” and boosts efficiency.

The transition between the support cut-off at the assistance speed limit has been remapped, and is claimed to be smoother as a result. Support now tapers down towards the speed limiter, helping the bike feel more natural on the trails.

Overrun has also been remapped, with “sharper” behaviour. When you stop pedalling, the overrun is said to be more responsive, with the aim of making it easier for the rider to get up steps, roots, rocks and obstacles.

Walk mode has been given three speed settings; you can now set the bike to move at your pace.

Specialized is keen to extoll the virtues of its over-the-air (OTA) updates, made accessible via the Specialized smartphone app.

Specialized Turbo 3.1 motor power update on a smartphone being done by a man on a sofa
According to Specialized, the process should be easy. Specialized Bikes

Marco Sonderegger, the brand’s leader of turbo technology, says: “With over-the-air updates, every Turbo bike becomes a living evolving machine that gets better over time… With a simple software update done from the convenience of their home, riders’ bikes get more powerful, more refined, and more personalised.”

The brand also states “this milestone marks the start of a new era… keeping bikes running the most advanced software Specialized has ever created.”

But free OTA updates are nothing new; Bosch’s recent 100Nm and 750W update was delivered to its Gen 5 Performance Line CX motors via the Flow smartphone app

DJI’s latest 120Nm and 1,000W boost also came via app, giving the Avinox motor the highest figures of any mainstream manufacturer.

There’s more to it than headline figures, however.

How the power is delivered, and the bike’s assistance or support ratio or percentage are just as important.

Bosch Performance Line CX Race motor in the Yeti LTe T4 e-mountain bike
The Performance Line CX Gen 5 has 100Nm of torque and 750W of power.

The Bosch Gen 5 motor is hardly lacking in the power or torque departments, but its 1:4 or 400 per cent support ratio can make it feel lacklustre compared to the Avinox’s 1:8 or 800 per cent figure.

100W of rider power gives you up to 400W of Bosch motor power, totalling 500W. In the Avinox camp, 100W of your power will generate up to 800W of motor power, totalling 900W.

As I found in a recent head-to-head test between the Bosch and Avinox, the support ratio makes DJI’s motor shine everywhere.

Specialized doesn’t disclose its support ratios in the same way Bosch and DJI do, making direct comparisons hard.

The Bosch motor isn’t lacking in power, but its support ratio means it feels gutless compared to the DJI Avinox. Roo Fowler / Orbea

Instead, the brand quotes its support and power as a percentage, rather than treating it as a rider amplifier number.

We don’t know how much rider input is required to access the 850W or 810W of peak power on the Turbo 3.1 motor.

Whether or not Specialized’s latest updates will edge it closer to the feel of a DJI motor remains to be seen.

Specialized turns the S-Works Tarmac SL8 into a rolling canvas with three limited-edition designs

Specialized has released the S-Works Tarmac SL8 Artist Series, featuring artwork from Pieter ‘Parra’ Janssen, Yoon Hyup and Lucas Beaufort on its flagship road frame.

The brand says it has chosen to work with the artists, who are cyclists themselves, to draw on their experiences on and off the bike.

Specialized claims each design expresses a different relationship to movement, colour, rhythm and the feeling of riding the bike.

The S-Works Tarmac SL8 Artist Series frames are priced at £4,999, and once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

We’ve seen other brands work with artists to turn their bikes into rolling canvases, with Canyon’s MyCanyon Aeroad available with artwork from Felipe Pantone and Elena Salmistraro.

Netflix is streaming its first MMA fight on May 16

Netflix is streaming its very first live MMA fight on May 16. The combatants are one-time phenom Ronda Rousey and one-time actor Gina Carano. Both women have retired from the sport. Rousey left in 2016 and Carano left all the way back in 2009. In any event, they are both back for one night only.

The featherweight bout will take place inside a hexagon cage and will stream globally. It’s likely Netflix had to choose two retired fighters because current stars are under contracts with various promotional entities. This fight is co-hosted by Most Valuable Productions, a promotional company started by Jake Paul.

Netflix has already been streaming boxing matches, so MMA seems like a natural next step. The platform has also aired live talk shows, golf events and awards ceremonies.

If you’re unfamiliar with the aforementioned fighters, Rousey is a UFC champion and Olympic medalist who has a fantastic 12-2 record in MMA. Carano is a pioneer in the sport, starting her career all the way back in 2006.

She also played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian before getting into hot water after social media posts that mocked mask wearing during the pandemic, alleged voter fraud during the 2020 election and denigrated transgender people. However, it really came to a head when she doubled down on her comments, likening the social media blowback conservatives receive to what Jewish people experienced during the holocaust. That’s when she was fired from the hit Star Wars show.

Carano has since teamed up with Elon Musk to sue Disney over the firing. In related news, there’s a fresh trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu movie and it’s pretty darned fun.
