The rise of Moltbook suggests viral AI prompts may be the next big security threat

On November 2, 1988, graduate student Robert Morris released a self-replicating program into the early Internet. Within 24 hours, the Morris worm had infected roughly 10 percent of all connected computers, crashing systems at Harvard, Stanford, NASA, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The worm exploited security flaws in Unix systems that administrators knew existed but had not bothered to patch.

Morris did not intend to cause damage. He wanted to measure the size of the Internet. But a coding error caused the worm to replicate far faster than expected, and by the time he tried to send instructions for removing it, the network was too clogged to deliver the message.

History may soon repeat itself with a novel new platform: networks of AI agents carrying out instructions from prompts and sharing them with other AI agents, which could spread the instructions further.

These challenger headphones rival Shokz in every category – and they’re now £130 cheaper

I’ve spent three years testing the best headphones for cycling and running – and while the Shokz OpenFit 2+ won the overall award, Huawei’s FreeArcs ran them very close. Now that Huawei’s buds are reduced to a mere £49 – £120 less than the Shokz RRP – they’re the ones I’d buy.

The design of the FreeArcs is almost identical to the OpenFit 2+, with both sets of buds featuring supple nickel-titanium ear hooks coated in soft silicone to ensure they stay put and remain comfortable when you’re on the bike.

The Huawei buds have an IP57 waterproof rating, which is superior to the IP55 of the OpenFits, although battery life is seven hours compared to the 10 offered by Shokz.

Widescreen presentation and clarity

Having tested most of the leading headphones and buds designed for running and cycling, I’m now rotating between the Shokz and Huawei designs while training for my next half-marathon.

I tested the FreeArcs on a variety of outdoor runs, treadmill sessions and while commuting to work, and the sound quality was balanced, engaging and detailed, standing up well to wind noise.

I found the “widescreen presentation and clarity“ and separation of instruments to be right up there with the best headphones for cycling. The OpenFits offer a slightly more powerful bass response, but with the price difference now up to £130 if you buy direct from Huawei, I’d be more likely to opt for the FreeArcs.

Most importantly, like the highly similar OpenFits, Huawei’s buds are an open-ear design, ensuring your ear canals are not obstructed and you can maintain awareness of traffic and other ambient noise while you’re cycling.

Garmin Connect is breaking smartwatch connections – here’s how to fix it

If you’ve been struggling to connect your Garmin smartwatch to the Garmin Connect app, you’re not alone.

The latest software update to Garmin Connect has disconnected many users’ smartwatches from the app and left them unable to sync their activities and data.

Users began reporting the issue last week following the release of the 5.21 updates. The problems seem to affect iOS users only, while Android users can use Connect as normal.

Garmin said it is aware of the issue with Garmin Connect for some iOS users, and that the issue was resolved with the later 5.21.1 update. But the GPS giant provided three steps to follow if your device is still disconnected from its health and fitness app.

How to reconnect your Garmin device with your phone

Garmin advised that you should first remove your device from your iPhone or iPad’s Bluetooth settings. In your Bluetooth settings, you must locate your Garmin device and then select ‘Forget This Device’, before toggling Bluetooth on and off and then powering off your iOS device and Garmin.

You should then put your Garmin device into pairing mode via its settings before adding the device to the Garmin Connect App.

Garmin said that if you are still unable to pair your devices you should:

  • Uninstall all Garmin apps on your phone, such as Garmin Connect, Garmin Messenger and Garmin Connect IQ
  • Restart the Phone
  • Restart the Garmin device
  • Confirm your iPhone software is up to date
  • Reinstall only the Garmin Connect App
  • Attempt the pairing process again

Problems are persisting for some users

Despite Garmin’s advice on how to re-pair your watch and iOS device, some users said in the Garmin forum that they were unable to establish a connection again.

Garmin followed up with a further update on 2 February to address the issue for those who were unable to re-pair their devices.

Users continued to express their frustration on the Garmin forum. One said their device has repeatedly disconnected since the issue started. “At this stage I’m considering switching to a different brand,” they wrote.

Another user described the issue as “Extremely frustrating when other users have been able to fix following the suggested steps”.

Have you had an issue trying to re-pair your Garmin device? Is the issue persisting? Let us know in the comments.

The Switch is Now Nintendo’s Best-Selling Console of All Time

The original Switch is officially Nintendo’s best-selling console of all time after surpassing the DS handheld in lifetime sales. From a report: In its latest earnings release, Nintendo reports that the Nintendo Switch has, as of December 31, 2025, sold 155.37 million units since its launch in 2017, compared to 154.02 million units for the 2004 Nintendo DS.

In November, Nintendo reported that the Switch and DS were neck and neck. We expected the holiday sales period would see the Switch surpass the DS, even with Nintendo announcing that primary development would focus on the Switch 2. Nintendo previously said that it would continue to sell the original Switch “while taking consumer demand and the business environment into consideration.”

Nintendo has to keep selling the Switch if it wants to dethrone Sony’s PlayStation 2 as the best-selling video game console of all time. The PlayStation 2, discontinued in January 2013, sold more than 160 million units over its 13-year lifespan.

X’s Paris HQ raided by French prosecutors

Paris prosecutors announced that a search was underway at offices belong to Elon Musk’s X platform as part of an ongoing investigation first launched in January 2025. The raid is being conducted by Paris and national cybercrime units, with support from Interpol, according to post from Paris prosecutors on X. Officials from X have yet to comment on the matter.

At the same time, Paris prosecutors issued summonses to Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino for “voluntary interviews” on April 20, 2026 in Paris. The prosecutors also announced they would no longer use X and would only communicate on LinkedIn and Instagram going forward.

The searches are part of an investigation that has been ongoing for nearly a year over the functioning of X’s algorithms that are “likely to have distorted the operation of an automated data processing system,” investigators said at the time. Those changes reportedly gave greater prominence to certain political content (especially from Musk) without user knowledge — something that could be a crime under French laws.

An investigation was officially launched in July, with Paris prosecutors adding an additional charge: “Fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system by an organized group.” More recently, it also includes “complicity in the possession of images of minors representing a pedo-pornographic character,” due to images created by Grok between December 25, 2025 and January 1, 2026.

In July, X said in a statement that the probe “egregiously undermines X’s fundamental right to due process and threatens our users’ rights to privacy and free speech. [French officials have] accused X of manipulating its algorithm for ‘foreign interference’ purposes, an allegation which is completely false.”

Out this week is the sixth iteration of this remade NTFS driver…

The Switch just surpassed the DS as Nintendo’s best-selling console ever

The original Switch just became Nintendo’s best-selling console ever with 155.37 million units as of December 31, 2025, overtaking the DS which sold 154.02 million units from 2004-2011. It was part of a holiday surge that saw the company move 7.01 million Switch 2s (and 17.37 million through Q3 of its fiscal year), making it the “fastest-selling dedicated video platform released by Nintendo to date,” the company said in its earnings report.

Despite being supplanted by the Switch 2, the Switch keeps selling decently (1.36 million units in Q3 fiscal 2026), due to its relatively cheap price. Nintendo reported last year that it was just trailing the DS in sales and would likely surpass it after Christmas. The Switch is now just 5.27 million units behind Sony’s PS2, the best-selling console of all time — so Nintendo would have to keep selling it for at least a couple more years to get the record.

The Switch 2, meanwhile, has been a sales machine. With high holiday sales that exceeded expectations, Nintendo should easily reach its 19 million sales goal for fiscal 2026 ending March 31 this year. The company has already (easily) busted through its original sales forecast of 15 million consoles set earlier in 2025.

Game sales were also strong, with Mario Kart World hitting 14 million units and Donkey Kong Bananza selling 4.25 million since the Switch 2’s launch. With all that, the company saw 803.32 billion yen in sales for Q3 ($5.2 billion), up 86 percent over last year but a bit less than expected, and 159.93 billion yen in profit ($1.03 billion), 20 percent higher than the same period last year.

Whether the company can continue that may depend on the strength of its upcoming game lineup. Two of those key titles are Mario Tennis Fever expected on February 12 and Pokemon Pokopia arriving in March.

Unable to tame hydrogen leaks, NASA delays launch of Artemis II until March

The launch of NASA’s Artemis II mission, the first flight of astronauts to the Moon in more than 53 years, will have to wait another month after a fueling test Monday uncovered hydrogen leaks in the connection between the rocket and its launch platform at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

“Engineers pushed through several challenges during the two-day test and met many of the planned objectives,” NASA said in a statement following the conclusion of the mock countdown, or Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR), early Tuesday morning. “To allow teams to review data and conduct a second Wet Dress Rehearsal, NASA now will target March as the earliest possible launch opportunity for the flight test.”

The practice countdown was designed to identify problems and provide NASA an opportunity to fix them before launch. Most importantly, the test revealed NASA still has not fully resolved recurring hydrogen leaks that delayed the launch of the unpiloted Artemis I test flight by several months in 2022. Artemis I finally launched successfully after engineers revised their hydrogen loading procedures to overcome the leak.

Hidden Car Door Handles Are Officially Being Banned In China

sinij writes: Automakers have increasingly implemented door handles that retract into the bodywork for aerodynamic reasons, but they are now off limits in China.
My issue is with electronic-only door latch mechanism. It should be possible to open the door from both inside and outside the car in case of complete power loss.

SpaceX Acquires xAI in $1.25 Trillion All-Stock Deal

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has acquired his AI startup xAI in an all-stock deal that values the combined entity at $1.25 trillion, ahead of what would be the largest initial public offering in history. SpaceX pegged its own valuation at $1 trillion — a markup from the $800 billion it commanded in a December secondary stock sale — and priced xAI at $250 billion based on a recent $20 billion funding round that valued the two-year-old AI company at $230 billion.

SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen told investors on a call Monday that shares in the combined company would be priced at $527 and that xAI shares would convert into SpaceX stock at a roughly seven-to-one exchange rate. The company is still targeting a June IPO expected to raise as much as $50 billion, surpassing Saudi Aramco’s $29 billion listing in 2019.

Musk said the least expensive way to do AI computation within two to three years will be in space. “Global electricity demand for AI simply cannot be met with terrestrial solutions, even in the near term, without imposing hardship on communities and the environment,” he wrote. SpaceX filed last Friday for permission to launch up to a million satellites into Earth’s orbit. xAI merged with Musk’s social media platform X last March in a $113 billion deal, and Tesla announced a $2 billion investment in xAI last week.

Leica Camera’s Owners Weigh $1.2 Billion Sale of Controlling Stake

The owners of Leica Camera AG — Austrian billionaire Andreas Kaufmann and private equity giant Blackstone — are considering a sale of a controlling stake in the German camera maker in a deal that could value the company at about $1.2 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

HSG, formerly known as Sequoia Capital China, and Altor Equity Partners are among a handful of bidders. The Kaufmann family could re-invest following a transaction. Leica traces its roots roughly 150 years to Ernst Leitz’s microscope company and was publicly traded on the Frankfurt stock exchange until the Kaufmann family took it private in 2012.

Crunchyroll increases prices for all anime streaming plans

Anime fans won’t be getting any respite from the streaming service price hikes that now feel inevitable on every platform every couple of years. Crunchyroll announced today that it will be increasing the monthly costs for all its plans by $2. That means the Fan tier will now run you $10 a month, the Mega Fan Tier is $14 a month and the Ultimate Fan Tier is $18 a month.

The platform introduced its Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan options in 2020, with both at long last giving viewers an option to watch shows offline. The silver lining in today’s price changes is that the Fan members are getting the same offline viewing option, although it’s limited to one device. Crunchyroll is further enticing the people who might now be more interested in the Fan level by offering a discount on the annual plan for that tier; you can get a year’s access for a limited time for $67.

Klingon Elsa Performs ‘Let It Go’ In Her Native Language

Captain’s log, Stardate 43957.2: Klingon Elsa performed ‘Let It Go’ in her native language in the Ten Forward lounge tonight. I think I’m in love. End log. Data, bring me some tea! Earl Grey, iced. This is a video of Princess Jackie from Seattle-based party character provider The Painted Palace dressed as a Klingon Elsa performing a full length cover of ‘Let It Go’ in Klingon at Emerald City Comic Con. The performance was so moving it won the talent show. And I think we can all hear why — it blows the original out of the water. If the original was a cereal box kazoo, this was a Stradivarius. FULL DISCLOSURE: I did have to watch the video on mute, but I could tell by the way her mouth was moving and the scowling that this sounded like angels.

Moltbook, the AI social network, exposed human credentials due to vibe-coded security flaw

Moltbook bills itself as a social network for AI agents. That’s a wacky enough concept in the first place, but the site apparently exposed the credentials for thousands of its human users. The flaw was discovered by cybersecurity firm Wiz, and its team assisted Moltbook with addressing the vulnerability.

The issue appears to be the result of the entire Reddit-style forum being vibe-coded; Moltbook’s human founder posted a few days ago on X that he “didn’t write one line of code” for the platform and instead directed an AI assistant to create the whole setup.

According to the blog post from Wiz analyzing the issue, Moltbook had a vulnerability that allowed for “1.5 million API authentication tokens, 35,000 email addresses and private messages between agents” to be fully read and accessed. Wiz also found that the vulnerability could let unauthenticated human users edit live Moltbook posts. In other words, there is no way to verify whether a Moltbook post was authored by an AI agent or a human user posing as one. “The revolutionary AI social network was largely humans operating fleets of bots,” the company’s analysis concluded.

So ends another cautionary tale reminding us that just because AI can do a task doesn’t mean it’ll do it correctly.

Looking back at Catacomb 3D, the game that led to Wolfenstein 3D

If you know anything about the history of id Software, you know how 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D helped establish the company’s leadership in the burgeoning first-person shooter genre, leading directly to subsequent hits like Doom and Quake. But only the serious id Software nerds remember Catacomb 3D, id’s first-person adventure game that directly preceded and inspired work on Wolfenstein 3D.

Now, nearly 35 years after Catacomb 3D‘s initial release, id co-founder John Romero brought the company’s founding members together for an informative retrospective video on the creation of the oft-forgotten game. But the pioneering game—which included mouse support, color-coded keys, and shooting walls to find secrets—almost ended up being a gimmicky dead end for the company.

id Software’s founders look back at an oft-forgotten piece of gaming history

Texture maps and “undo” animation

Catacomb 3D was a follow-up to id’s earlier Catacomb, which was a simplified clone of the popular arcade hit Gauntlet. As such, the 3D game still has some of that “quarter eater” mentality that was not very fashionable in PC gaming at the time, as John Carmack remembered.
