The International Publishers Association spent the past year promoting the slogan “Democracy depends on reading,” but Atlantic senior editor Adam Kirsch argues that this utilitarian pitch fundamentally misunderstands why people become readers in the first place.
The most recent Survey of Public Participation in the Arts found that less than half of Americans read a single book in 2022, and only 38% read a novel or short story. A University of Florida and University College London study found daily reading for pleasure fell 3% annually from 2003 to 2023. Among 13-year-olds, just 14% read for fun almost every day in 2023, down from 27% a decade earlier.
Kirsch says to stop treating reading as civic medicine. “It would be better to describe reading not as a public duty but as a private pleasure, sometimes even a vice,” he writes. When literature was considered transgressive, moralists couldn’t stop people from buying dangerous books. Now that books are deemed virtuous, nobody picks them up. He points to Don Quixote and Madame Bovary — novels whose protagonists are ruined by their reading habits. Great writers, he notes, never idealized literature the way educators do. The pitch to young readers should emphasize staying up late reading under the covers by flashlight, hoping nobody finds out.

Winter weather can be miserable, but there is one huge perk: snowball fights. Any time a deep carpet of snow gets dumped on us, you can count on a bunch of kids (or young-at-heart adults) engaging in epic snowball fights, sometimes involving surprisingly well-engineered snow forts and sophisticated tactics.
This is the 21st century, however—if you’re still fighting your snowball fights with nothing but your bare hands and a sense of determination, you’re missing out. We can’t all be Buddy the Elf, shotgunning perfectly made snowballs like some sort of winter weather Terminator—but we can invest in some of the most fun snowball tech money can buy. If you’re looking to dominate your neighborhood’s winter wars (or put some snowball-tossing whippersnappers in their place), here’s what to buy.
Your first step is to up your snowball-making game. A cosmetically pleasing, perfectly spherical snowball is your first step toward snowball fight dominance. This set of simple snowball forms will make it easy to stockpile perfect snowballs in just a few minutes. If you don’t have a few minutes because you’re already under attack, you might turn to this 5-in-1 snowball maker that will let you quickly amass some serious firepower.
If you want to get a little more whimsical, you can also pick up snowball-making sets that include other shapes, like ducks or hearts, if that’s your jam.
Once you have your snowballs assembled, you’ll need something to augment your throwing power. This Snow Trac Ball (or these) can launch snowballs a lot further than you can with just your arm—up to 150 feet away. They also come with built-in snowball makers, so when you run out of your initial supply, you can quickly make and deploy fresh snowballs without missing a beat.
Throwing snowballs either bare-knuckled or using an implement is all well and good, but what if your opponents are serious about their snowball fighting? If you need more firepower, this Snowball Blaster is just what you need—load a snowball into the front, pull back the firing mechanism, take aim, and destroy your enemies. Want to keep things a little more primitive? This snowball slingshot keeps it simple—load a snowball, take aim, and launch for victory (this kit even comes with dye to color-code your snowballs in case you’re trying to keep score). Or go medieval on your enemies with this very cool Snow Crossbow, which even comes with a target so you can practice decimating your enemies.
No one wants a snowball to the face, so having a snowball shield on hand can keep you dry and unscathed while you rain snowballs on your opponents. Of course, this doesn’t have to be a snowball-specific shield—just about any plastic shield will help protect you from the snowballs being thrown your way.
Itching to have a snowball fight, but you live in a warm-weather area that hasn’t seen snow in decades? Or there just hasn’t been enough snowfall? Or it’s summer? Get yourself an indoor snowball fight kit and go to town. While you won’t get the visceral joy of smashing snow into someone’s head from a distance, you can replicate just about everything else that’s fun about snowball fights without the cold, damp, or, you know, snow. Throw in some couch-cushion forts and you have a guaranteed good time.
A patch is on the way to the Linux kernel and looks like it could be ready for the 6.20~7.0 kernel for addressing out-of-memory “OOM” killer inaccuracy behavior when dealing with large core count systems…
It’s time for more speedrunning (and other shenanigans) with the Games Done Quick (GDQ) crew. The first event of the year, Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), kicks off on Sunday, January 4, with Super Mario Sunshine. Donations for this year’s shindig will benefit the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
AGDQ 2026 has a whole week of 24/7 speedruns on tap. You’ll see slots for some of 2025’s biggest games: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades II are part of the festivities. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater gets both a standard run and a “versus” showdown. There’s also plenty of classic Nintendo fare, including (among others) Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart World, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Super Mario 64.

If you like weird, there’s plenty of that to chew on, too. The GDQ team is fond of dusting off forgotten, uh, “gems” for some entertaining playthroughs. Who can forget 1996’s Bill Nye: The Science Guy – Stop the Rock! or 1994’s Adventures of Yogi Bear? And although it’s a 2022 game, children of the ’80s can revisit the gross-out trading cards of their youth, in Garbage Pail Kids: Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum.
AGDQ 2026 runs from January 4 to 10. The livestream begins on Sunday at 11:30AM ET on the official GDQ Twitch channel. You can browse the full schedule for more details.

A quick bit of news for anyone shopping for a new trainer in 2026…
First: Zwift and Wahoo are already holding a “Big New Year Sale” ending on January 5. If you’re looking for a great deal on the Zwift Ride with KICKR CORE 2, or the KICKR V6, this is a great time to do it!
But just yesterday, Zwift launched an additional 10% discount available on the KICKR CORE 2 trainer to EU and UK customers. Just use the discount code “EXTRA10” at checkout!

Price includes 1 free month of Zwift ($20 value) for new subscribers only.
Clearly, Zwift is looking to move some inventory in the UK and EU markets. This is the lowest price I’ve ever seen on the CORE 2 for UK and EU customers.
The original Wahoo KICKR CORE’s longevity and reliability proved nothing short of startling, especially considering its price point. First released in 2018, the KICKR CORE is the “little brother” to Wahoo’s flagship KICKR trainer, and its hardware has remained unchanged since release.
It did, however, receive significant firmware updates to enable auto-calibration and Zwift virtual shifting, allowing it to become the de facto trainer paired with the Zwift Ride smart frame.
But competition in this price range is strong. September’s release of the KICKR CORE 2 brought premium features to Wahoo’s mid-budget workhorse, updating it to the standards set by the latest smart trainers.
New or upgraded features on the KICKR CORE 2 include:

A detailed investigation into these strange creatures is finally giving scientists and fishermen valuable clues about when and where they strike.
Tesla published its final production and delivery numbers this morning, and they make for brutal reading. Sales were down almost 16 percent during the final three months of last year, meaning the company sold 77,343 fewer electric vehicles than it did during the same period in 2024.
For the entire year, the decline looks slightly better with a drop of 8.6 percent year on year. That means Tesla sold 1,636,129 cars in 2025, 153,097 fewer than it managed in 2024. Which in turn is more than it managed to shift in 2023.
Contributing factors to the poor sales are legion. The brand still relies on the Models 3 and Y to an overwhelming extent, and other than a mild cosmetic refresh, neither feels fresh or modern compared with competitors from Europe and Asia.

Yann LeCun, Meta’s outgoing chief AI scientist and one of the pioneers credited with laying the groundwork for modern AI, has acknowledged that the company’s Llama 4 language model had its benchmark results manipulated before its April 2025 release. In an interview with the Financial Times, LeCun said the “results were fudged a little bit” and that the team “used different models for different benchmarks to give better results.”
Llama 4 was widely criticized as a flop at launch, and the company faced accusations of gaming benchmarks to make the model appear more capable than it was. LeCun said CEO Mark Zuckerberg was “really upset and basically lost confidence in everyone who was involved” in the release.
Zuckerberg subsequently “sidelined the entire GenAI organisation,” according to LeCun. “A lot of people have left, a lot of people who haven’t yet left will leave.” LeCun himself is departing Meta after more than a decade to start a new AI research venture called Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs. He described the new hires brought in for Meta’s superintelligence efforts as “completely LLM-pilled” — a technology LeCun has repeatedly called “a dead end when it comes to superintelligence.”

Greg Kroah-Hartman has written an
overview of how the kernel’s security team works.
The members of the security team contain a handful of core kernel
developers that have experience dealing with security bugs, and
represent different major subsystems of the kernel. They do this
work as individuals, and specifically can NOT tell their employer,
or anyone else, anything that is discussed on the security alias
before it is resolved. This arrangement has allowed the kernel
security team to remain independent and continue to operate across
the different governments that the members operate in, and it looks
to become the normal way project security teams work with the
advent of the European Union’s new CRA law coming into effect.
A new patch series that was posted this week allow for users to more easily replace the default kernel boot logo. While many of us are long accustomed to seeing the picture of Tux as the kernel boot logo, for those preferring to better customize your console boot experience these patches allow it to be easily manipulated via the kernel configuration “Kconfig” options…
