Graphite is an effort to unify
illustration, raster editing, desktop publishing, and animation in one
browser-based application. The project has been in development since
2020 and announced its first alpha release in 2022. According to creator Keavon Chambers, the project’s mission is to become
“the 2D counterpart to Blender
“, by bringing a node-based,
non-destructive workflow to 2D graphics. The project, currently still in
alpha, is a long way from complete; but it is worth testing for anyone
involved with open-source-graphics production. Current
builds, from September 2025, include vector-illustration tools, a
node-based compositor, and early brush tooling, with broader pixel-based-
and photo-editing work still in progress.

Retreating From EVs Could Be Hazardous For Western Carmakers
Western carmakers retreating from electric vehicles amid softening government mandates could find themselves in a precarious position as Chinese rivals continue gaining ground in the EV market they’re choosing to de-prioritize. The EU on December 16th dropped its earlier plan to ban petrol car sales outright from 2035, instead requiring carmakers to cut emissions from new vehicles by 90% from 2021 levels. The day before, Ford announced a $19.5 billion asset writedown as it rethinks its EV strategy and ends sales of the all-electric F-150 pickup.
In the U.S., the Trump administration has rolled back incentives and other measures that supported EVs. But Chinese brands controlled 10.7% of the all-electric car market in western Europe in the first ten months of 2025, up a percentage point from a year earlier, despite EU tariffs on Chinese EVs imposed in October 2024. Sales of Chinese hybrids, which aren’t subject to those tariffs, have surged. EVs will eventually become the cheaper option as production expands and costs fall, meaning Western carmakers that slow down now risk giving competitors an unassailable lead.

ASUS Responds To Rumors It Will Make DRAM To Alleviate The Memory Crisis

Sorry folks, but ASUS is not likely to save us from the current DRAM crisis that is expected to not only persist through all of next year, but potentially far beyond. Rumor has it that ASUS is toying with the idea of making its own DRAM chip production line to serve the consumer market, which if true, could help alleviate the shortage. However,
LG will show off a humanoid robot for household chores at CES 2026
LG will present a home robot named CLOiD at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. With humanoid robotics sure to feature heavily at this year’s tech conference, LG has teased its home assistant before a full unveiling in January.
The company says CLOiD’s two articulated arms with five individually actuated fingers are designed to help with a variety of household tasks. However, LG has not yet given a specific example of a task CLOiD can handle. We’re also not sure what it looks like, because aside from a couple of very close-up images of CLOiD’s hands, LG is keeping what the robot looks like under wraps until the show.
LG said CLOiD is part of the company’s vision that “Zero Labor Home, Makes Quality Time.” It said its robot is a step toward a company goal of “freeing customers from the time-consuming demands of housework.”
CLOiD’s chipset is housed in its head, which also sports a display, speaker, camera and a bevy of sensors meant to enable expressive communication. LG says its new robot is powered by its “Affectionate Intelligence” technology and is designed to interact in a neutral, user-friendly way. It’s also designed to refine its responses through repeated interactions with a user.
CES often plays host to proof-of-concept products that offer a window into the future but may not make it to market. It remains to be seen if CLOiD is simply a booth-side attention-getter or something with real potential. Visitors can see CLOiD handle some real-life scenarios at LG’s booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

AI’s Hunger For Memory Chips Could Shrink Smartphone and PC Sales in 2026, IDC Says
The global smartphone and PC markets face potential contractions of up to 5.2% and 8.9% respectively in 2026, according to downside risk scenarios from IDC that trace the problem to memory chip manufacturers shifting production capacity away from consumer electronics toward AI data centers. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron Technology have pivoted their limited cleanroom space toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, restricting supply of the conventional DRAM and NAND used in phones and laptops.
IDC expects 2026 DRAM supply growth to hit 16% year-on-year, below historical norms. The smartphone industry’s decade-long trend of bringing flagship features to affordable devices is reversing. Memory represents 15-20% of the bill of materials for mid-range phones, and thin-margin vendors like Xiaomi, Realme and Transsion will bear the brunt. Apple and Samsung have long-term supply agreements securing components up to 24 months ahead. PC vendors including Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer and ASUS have warned clients of 15-20% price increases heading into the second half of 2026.

Apple will allow third-party app stores and payment processing in Brazil
Brazilian regulators have reached a settlement with Apple after a yearslong investigation into the company’s App Store fee practices as well as its policies against third-party app stores. As first reported by Brazilian tech site tecnoblog, the nation’s Administrative Council of Economic Defense (CADE) said it has accepted Apple’s proposed agreement that will address claims of anticompetitive practices.
The agreement will allow for third-party payment processing methods for in-app purchases and reins in Apple’s anti-steering efforts by allowing links to external websites for transactions. The settlement requires that these payment options be shown next to Apple’s own. Apple must also allow third-party app stores to be installed on its devices, though the company is allowed to display warnings to users if they are written in a neutral and objective way.
A new fee structure has also been agreed to, with Apple applying no fee if users are directed to outside payment methods in a text-only way. The use of a clickable link or button for an external payment option will incur a 15 percent fee. Purchases made within Apple’s App Store will still be subject to a 10 percent or 20 percent commission. Developers using Apple’s payment system would also be subject to a 5 percent transaction fee.
Additionally a 5 percent “Core Technology Fee” would be levied against all app downloads from third-party app stores. This new structure bears similarities to policy and fee changes made after the EU passed its Digital Markets Act, with Apple allowing third-party app stores and external purchases subject to varying fees.
Apple will have 105 days to comply under the new agreement and could face fines of up to $27 million for failure to implement the changes. The iPhone maker has been facing mounting pressure from regulators worldwide over its anti-steering practices and was recently handed a $587 million fine by the EU for violating its Digital Markets Act. Apple is appealing the fine. In the US, Apple has been embroiled in a court battle with Fortnite maker Epic Games over commissions on purchases that take place on third-party payment platforms.

In the ’90s, Wing Commander: Privateer made me realize what kind of games I love
Ever since 1993, I think I’ve unconsciously judged almost every game by how well it can capture how Wing Commander: Privateer made me feel.
Steam and PlayStation (the two platforms I use the most) have been doing a year-in-review summary akin to the wildly popular Spotify Wrapped for the past few years. Based on these, I can report that my most-played games in 2025 were, from most hours down:
- No Man’s Sky
- Civilization VII
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows
- The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered
- The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
- The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind
- World of Warcraft
- Meridian 59
- Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon
- Unreal Tournament
With the exceptions of Civilization VII and Unreal Tournament, every one of those games is some kind of open-world experience that’s all about immersing you in a far-flung land (or galaxy).

Notable Zwift Events for the Weekend of December 27-28
There are lots of popular, long, or otherwise unique events happening this weekend as Rapha’s Festive 500 gets underway and riders are indoor in earnest. So many events, in fact, that I had to choose 10 instead of my regular 5! See them all below…
Rapha Festive 500

Unique Event
Zwift has organized a set of RoboPacer-led rides throughout the Festive 500. Rides alternate between “long” 50km rides on Triple Flat Loops at the top of each hour and “short” 25km rides on Watopia’s Waistband at the half hour.

Crazy TT
Cycling Time Trials – the national governing body for time trials in England, Scotland, and Wales – is holding a slightly crazy special event this weekend, in two different timeslots.
Your experience will vary significantly depending on the category you join, so choose carefully:
- Category A is a drafting-enabled ride with powerups enabled
- Category B has drafting disabled and no powerups
Both categories allow riders to choose any bike, including a TT bike. (So I’d recommend choosing a TT bike!) Late starts are allowed for up to 30 minutes.
All riders will be on the France Classic Fondo route for 100 miles.

FAAST CREW FESTIVE 500

There are always a few teams crazy enough to plan full 500km events during the Festive 500, but this weekend I only see one. It’s an open-paced ride on Tempus Fugit with the FAAST crew, and the sparse event notes says, “Bring your big boy pants!”
Stay for the full ride, or just see how long you can go. This will be a challenge no matter how you slice it!

How We Make Our Picks
We choose each weekend’s Notable Events based on a variety of factors including:
- Is the event unique/innovative in some way?
- Are celebrities (pro riders, etc) attending/leading?
- Are signup counts already high, meaning the event is extra-popular?
- Does the ride include desirable unlocks or prizes?
- Does the event appeal to ladies on Zwift? (We like to support this under-represented group!)
- Is it for a good cause?
- Is it just plain crazy (extra long races, world record attempts, etc)?
- Is it a long-running, popular weekly event with a dedicated leader who deserves a shout out?
In the end, we want to call attention to events that are extra-special and therefore extra-appealing to Zwifters. If you think your event qualifies, comment below with a link/details and we may just include it in an upcoming post!

China Launches $21 Billion Venture Capital Funds To Invest in ‘Hard Technology’
An anonymous reader shares a report: China on Friday launched three venture capital funds to invest in “hard technology” areas, state broadcaster CCTV reported. The capital contribution plans for the funds have been finalised, each with more than 50 billion yuan ($7.14 billion), according to the report. The funds will primarily invest in early-stage startups and the targets should be valued at less than 500 million yuan, an official said on Friday, adding that no single investment would amount to more than 50 million yuan.

Ars Technica’s Top 20 video games of 2025
When we put together our top 20 games of last year, we specifically called out Civilization 7, Avowed, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Grand Theft Auto 6 as big franchise games we were already looking forward to for 2025. While one of those games has been delayed into 2026, the three others made this year’s list of Ars’ favorite games as expected. They join a handful of other highly anticipated sequels, ranging from big-budget blockbusters to long-gestating indies, on the “expected” side of this year’s list.
But the games that really stood out for me in 2025 were the ones that seemed to come out of nowhere. Those range from hard-to-categorize roguelike puzzle games to a gonzo, punishing mountainous walking simulation, the best Geometry Wars clone in years, and a touching look at the difficulties of adolescence through the surprisingly effective lens of mini-games.
As we look toward 2026, there are plenty of other big-budget projects that the industry is busy preparing for (the delayed Grand Theft Auto VI chief among them). If next year is anything like this year, though, we can look forward to plenty more games that no one saw coming suddenly vaulting into view as new classics.
