Apple Claims ‘Most Significant Upgrade to Memory Safety’ in OS History
“There has never been a successful, widespread malware attack against iPhone,” notes Apple’s security blog, pointing out that “The only system-level iOS attacks we observe in the wild come from mercenary spyware… historically associated with state actors and [using] exploit chains that cost millions of dollars…”
But they’re doing something about it — this week announcing a new always-on memory-safety protection in the iPhone 17 lineup and iPhone Air (including the kernel and over 70 userland processes)…
Known mercenary spyware chains used against iOS share a common denominator with those targeting Windows and Android: they exploit memory safety vulnerabilities, which are interchangeable, powerful, and exist throughout the industry… For Apple, improving memory safety is a broad effort that includes developing with safe languages and deploying mitigations at scale…
Our analysis found that, when employed as a real-time defensive measure, the original Arm Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) release exhibited weaknesses that were unacceptable to us, and we worked with Arm to address these shortcomings in the new Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE) specification, released in 2022. More importantly, our analysis showed that while EMTE had great potential as specified, a rigorous implementation with deep hardware and operating system support could be a breakthrough that produces an extraordinary new security mechanism…. Ultimately, we determined that to deliver truly best-in-class memory safety, we would carry out a massive engineering effort spanning all of Apple — including updates to Apple silicon, our operating systems, and our software frameworks. This effort, together with our highly successful secure memory allocator work, would transform MTE from a helpful debugging tool into a groundbreaking new security feature.
Today we’re introducing the culmination of this effort: Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE), our comprehensive memory safety defense for Apple platforms. Memory Integrity Enforcement is built on the robust foundation provided by our secure memory allocators, coupled with Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE) in synchronous mode, and supported by extensive Tag Confidentiality Enforcement policies. MIE is built right into Apple hardware and software in all models of iPhone 17 and iPhone Air and offers unparalleled, always-on memory safety protection for our key attack surfaces including the kernel, while maintaining the power and performance that users expect. In addition, we’re making EMTE available to all Apple developers in Xcode as part of the new Enhanced Security feature that we released earlier this year during WWDC…
Based on our evaluations pitting Memory Integrity Enforcement against exceptionally sophisticated mercenary spyware attacks from the last three years, we believe MIE will make exploit chains significantly more expensive and difficult to develop and maintain, disrupt many of the most effective exploitation techniques from the last 25 years, and completely redefine the landscape of memory safety for Apple products. Because of how dramatically it reduces an attacker’s ability to exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities on our devices, we believe Memory Integrity Enforcement represents the most significant upgrade to memory safety in the history of consumer operating systems.

This horse-themed browser puzzle game is an absolute delight and I can’t stop playing it
Another day, another adorable game that I’ve become completely obsessed with. I came across Roly-Pony this weekend during a particularly soul-sucking bout of doomscrolling, and it’s turned out to be the perfect little temporary respite from the horrors. (Shoutout to Alice Ruppert of The Mane Quest for always keeping us informed about the latest in horse games).
Roly-Pony is a Suika-style game, meaning it involves dropping and stacking round objects in order to create matching pairs that combine to become different, bigger objects. That’ll also clear up space on the board in the process, which is important because, similar to Tetris, you can’t allow the objects to pile too high. In this case, you start with horse treats and keep building on them until you’ve unlocked a bunch of different horses. It’s very simple and very cute, with peaceful music going in the background and a lot of little details that people who love horses will really appreciate.
The game is free and playable on both the web and mobile, with a leaderboard so you can see how you rank. I naively thought I would just quickly check this game out (because, horses) and move on after a few minutes, but have instead spent hours this weekend trying to crack the top 10. I’ve now got it bookmarked on both my laptop and my phone, so at this point there’s no end in sight. Roly-Pony is free, but there’s an option to send a few dollars the developers’ way on itch.io if you want to support their work.

Japan Sets Record: Nearly 100,000 People Aged Over 100
The oldest person living in Japan is 114 years old, reports the BBC. But “The number of people in Japan aged 100 or older has risen to a record high of nearly 100,000, its government has announced.”
Setting a new record for the 55th year in a row, the number of centenarians in Japan was 99,763 as of September, the health ministry said on Friday. Of that total, women accounted for an overwhelming 88%… Health minister Takamaro Fukoka congratulated the 87,784 female and 11,979 male centenarians on their longevity and expressed his “gratitude for their many years of contributions to the development of society”….
The higher life expectancy is mainly attributed to fewer deaths from heart disease and common forms of cancer, in particular breast and prostate cancer. Japan has low rates of obesity, a major contributing factor to both diseases, thanks to diets low in red meat and high in fish and vegetables. The obesity rate is particularly low for women, which could go some way to explaining why Japanese women have a much higher life expectancy than their male counterparts… But it’s not just diet. Japanese people tend to stay active into later life, walking and using public transport more than elderly people in the US and Europe…
However, several studies have cast doubt on the validity of global centenarian numbers, suggesting data errors, unreliable public records and missing birth certificates may account for elevated figures. A government audit of family registries in Japan in 2010 uncovered more than 230,000 people listed as being aged 100 or older who were unaccounted for, some having in fact died decades previously. The miscounting was attributed to patchy record-keeping and suspicions that some families may have tried to hide the deaths of elderly relatives in order to claim their pensions.

Meta Connect 2025: What We Expect, And What We Don’t
Meta Connect 2025 starts on Wednesday. Here’s what we expect to see announced, and what we don’t.
The company’s annual conference, where it typically announces new hardware and major software and content updates, takes place on September 17 and September 18 this year.
Meta’s description of the main keynote simply states that Mark Zuckerberg will “share the latest on AI glasses and lay out Meta’s vision for artificial intelligence and the metaverse”. And last month, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth teased “big wearables announcements”, as well as AI and “metaverse software”.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
Beyond this vagueness, Meta has kept tight-lipped about what to expect. But a series of reports from reliable sources, and our understanding of Meta’s strategy, mean we can make some reasonable predictions as to what to expect.
Keep in mind that we may be wrong, however, and the only way to really find out what Meta will announce is to watch the Connect keynote.
Smart Glasses
Monocular HUD Glasses
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, The Verge, The Information, and The Financial Times have all reported that Meta intends to release smart glasses with a small monocular heads-up display (HUD) this year, codenamed Hypernova, controlled by finger gestures from its long-in-development sEMG neural wristband, reportedly set to be included in the box.
To be clear, this will not be AR. The reports suggest that the small HUD will be used to show the time, weather, and notifications, to frame and preview photos, for turn-by-turn navigation, to show captions and translations of real-world speech, and to optionally display Meta AI responses as text instead of audio.

According to The Information, the addition of the HUD brings Hypernova to around 70 grams, compared to the 50 grams of Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
In July, renders of Hypernova and its wristband were discovered in early firmware on a public Meta server, and an engraving visible in one of the renders seemingly revealed the product’s name: Meta Celeste.
While Mark Gurman said back in April that Meta was planning to sell the product for over $1000, last month he reported that the company has decided to sell it from $800.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
We expect Meta’s HUD glasses to be the primary focus of Connect 2025, and it’s likely the company will open preorders for them there.
Oakley Meta Sphaera Glasses
Meta and EssilorLuxottica recently launched the Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, and they’re essentially just a slightly higher-end version of Ray-Ban Meta, with higher resolution video recording and longer battery life.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, though, this won’t be the only Oakley Meta collab this year. Gurman reports that the two companies are also working on glasses based on Oakley’s Sphaera design, with the camera in the center.
A centered camera would be more ideal for first-person footage, and the product will reportedly be marketed towards “cyclists and other athletes”.
Next-Gen Ray-Ban Meta Glasses?
Meta’s HUD glasses will be a much higher priced product than the mainstream Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and not a replacement for them.
But could we see an upgrade for Ray-Ban Meta too? Reports disagree.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
Back in May, The Information reported that the codenames of the next generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses are Aperol and Bellini, and that they were planned for 2026. Upgrades would include the ability to recognize faces and run continuous AI sessions for “hours”, the outlet said.
However, in July a group on Chinese social media calling itself XR Research Institute posted apparent renders of the next-gen Ray-Ban Meta glasses, showing distinct designs for optical glasses and sunglasses. And the group claimed that the new models should launch this year.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
Given how recently Meta and EssilorLuxottica launched the Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, with only minor upgrades over Ray-Ban Meta at a $100 higher price, it seems unlikely that Meta will imminently drop a true next generation. But given just how popular the glasses are, it’s within the realm of possibility that Meta and EssilorLuxottica have accelerated their plans.
A Glasses SDK (Of Some Kind)
Regardless of which glasses Meta does or doesn’t launch at Connect 2025, it seems clear that some kind of SDK for developers is inbound.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
On the schedule, 3 of the developer sessions set to take place on day 2 include “new developer toolkit from Meta to be announced September 18” in their titles.
All three sessions are hosted by Meta employees whose LinkedIn profiles include phrases like “I help companies bring their apps to AI-powered smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta”, and work on “software integrations with external parties for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses”.
Further, last month CNBC reported that Meta has reached out to third-party developers to build “experimental apps” for the HUD glasses.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
What’s entirely unclear is exactly what form a Meta smart glasses SDK might take.
Given the extremely limited compute of the glasses themselves, one possibility is that the SDK will be server-side, letting developers build integrations for Meta AI, rather than the glasses themselves, akin to Alexa Skills.
Headsets & Horizon OS
No New Quest Headset
For the first time since Connect 2021, where Facebook renamed itself to Meta and presented its vision of the metaverse, we do not expect the company to launch a new Quest headset.
Meta and LG once planned to ship a Quest Pro spiritual successor this year, but that was at least delayed to 2027 last year, and canceled earlier this year as LG officially ceased its XR product commercialization efforts (the company is still continuing background R&D).
UploadVRDavid Heaney
Our sources suggest that Meta’s next headset will be an ultralight open-periphery device with a tethered compute puck, running Horizon OS, which the company hopes to ship in 2026.
The Asus ROG Headset?
While we’re highly confident in saying that Meta itself won’t be launching a new headset this year, that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see a new headset running Quest’s system software and store.
Last year, when branding the Quest operating system as Horizon OS, Meta announced that select third-party hardware companies would be able to use it in their headsets too, starting with Asus and Lenovo.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
The Asus headset was described as a “performance gaming headset” under the company’s Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand, while Lenovo is apparently working on a line of headsets for “productivity, learning, and entertainment”.
Back in January, VR enthusiast Luna received a tip with apparent details of the Asus ROG headset. According to that tip, the headset is codenamed Tarius, will have face and eye tracking, and will use either QD-LCD panels with local dimming or micro-OLED displays.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
We haven’t seen any leak or report that indicates we’ll see the Asus ROG Horizon OS headset launch this year. And it may be launched at an Asus event, rather than a Meta event. But it’s well within the realm of possibility that we see something related to it at Meta Connect 2025.
Horizon OS Screen Sharing
Since last year – and some would argue in response to Apple Vision Pro – Meta overhauled how Horizon OS handles 2D windows, such as the web browser and traditional Android apps. But Meta doesn’t yet have a system-wide capability for sharing these windows with others.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
The latest PTC (Public Test Channel) build of the operating system adds the ability to persistently pin windows in the overhauled VR home space. And Luna’s datamining of Horizon OS suggests that it will soon let you ‘Share’ these windows with others visiting your home.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
The ability to share 2D windows with other people is a fundamental feature of Apple’s visionOS for Vision Pro, called SharePlay, and we expect Meta to at least tease, if not launch, some kind of equivalent at Connect 2025.
A New Blockbuster VR Game?
Something I’ve seen a lot of people wonder about Connect 2025 is whether or not we’ll see Meta announce a new first-party blockbuster VR game.
To us, it seems unlikely. In recent years Meta has moved to announcing its blockbuster titles during the summer, originally at its own Meta Quest Gaming Showcase events and most recently at wider gaming events like gamescom for Batman: Arkham Shadow last year and Summer Game Fest for Deadpool VR this year.
UploadVRHenry Stockdale
Deadpool VR is set to launch on November 18, exclusively for Quest 3 and Quest 3S, and we expect this to be Meta’s only blockbuster VR game releasing this year. It’s also possible that Meta will bundle Deadpool VR with new purchases of Quest 3S and/or Quest 3, as it did with Batman: Arkham Shadow.
That’s not to say Meta isn’t working on a new blockbuster VR title. The voice actor for Commissioner Gordon in Arkham Shadow confirmed last month that a sequel was about to enter development.
UploadVRHenry Stockdale
It’s possible that Meta will announce the Arkham Shadow sequel at Connect 2025. But given the long development cycles of games like this, the company may want to wait for a future Connect for that.
Valve Steam Frame?
Another thing that could happen during Meta Connect is the announcement of Valve’s new headset.
To be clear, we don’t mean at Meta Connect itself, but we do mean during. Back in 2019, Valve set the embargo for first impressions of Index, and opened preorders, during F8 2019, the Facebook conference where Mark Zuckerberg opened preorders for Rift S and Oculus Quest.
While Valve’s relationship with Meta has clearly improved in the six years since, we definitely wouldn’t rule out Valve trying to steal Meta’s thunder again.
UploadVRIan Hamilton
Over the past four years Valve has repeatedly confirmed that it’s working on a new headset, strongly hinting that it will have a focus on wireless streaming from your PC. In this time, many references to a Valve headset called “Deckard” have been found in the code of SteamVR, and “Roy” controller models were discovered late last year.
Last week Valve applied for a trademark on the term ‘Steam Frame’, and both SteamVR datamining and leakers suggest this could be the product name for Deckard.
UploadVRDavid Heaney
Another possibility is that Valve will launch the SteamVR Link Dongle that has been discovered in SteamVR code, which could improve the reliability of wireless PC VR for all standalone headsets.

The Stop Killing Games movement is nearing an official meeting with EU lawmakers
The Stop Killing Games campaign is continuing to gain momentum after hitting more than a million signatures in July. After a July 31st deadline, the movement secured around 1.45 million signatures, which the organizers are currently in the process of verifying. The initiative aims to enact legislation that preserves access to video games, even when developers decide to end support, as seen with Ubisoft when it delisted The Crew and revoked access to players who already purchased the game. There were some early concerns about the potential for falsely-submitted signatures, but the latest update from organizers said that early reports show around 97 percent of the signatures are valid.
According to the European Commission’s website, EU authorities have three months to verify the signatures once they are submitted. After that, the organizers said they will personally deliver the petition to the European Commission. With initial estimates clearing the threshold of one million verified signatures, the following steps involve getting meetings with both the European Commission and the European Parliament.
From the date of the initiative’s submission, the European Union will get six months to decide what to do regarding the Stop Killing Games movement. There is the possibility of the governing bodies not taking any action at all, but the organizers said they are “preparing to ensure our initiative cannot be ignored.” To prepare for the meetings, the organizers said they will be reaching out to members of Parliament and the Commission, while also trying to counter any misinformation or industry lobbying. For now, the campaign will post more frequent updates on its Discord community and social media channels.

African Island Demanding Government Action Punished with Year-Long Internet Outage
“When residents of Equatorial Guinea’s Annobón island wrote to the government in Malabo in July last year complaining about the dynamite explosions by a Moroccan construction company, they didn’t expect the swift end to their internet access…” reports the Associated Press.
“Residents and activists said the company’s dynamite explosions in open quarries and construction activities have been polluting their farmlands and water supply…”
Dozens of the signatories and residents were imprisoned for nearly a year, while internet access to the small island has been cut off since then, according to several residents and rights groups. Local residents interviewed by The Associated Press left the island in the past months, citing fear for their lives and the difficulty of life without internet. Banking services have shut down, hospital services for emergencies have been brought to a halt and residents say they rack up phone bills they can’t afford because cellphone calls are the only way to communicate…
The company’s work on the island continues. Residents hoped to pressure authorities to improve the situation with their complaint in July last year. Instead, [the country’s president] then deployed a repressive tactic now common in Africa to cut off access to internet to clamp down on protests and criticisms.

The Witcher Season 4 will hit Netflix in October with its new Geralt
It’s been quite the wait, but the fourth season of The Witcher is almost here. In a teaser shared this weekend, Netflix finally revealed the release date: October 30. The video also provided an extended look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia — a casting change that fans naturally have a lot of feelings about after Henry Cavill won their hearts with his take on the character in the first three seasons. The minute-and-a-half-long clip doesn’t give away too much about season four, but we now have a proper sense of what our new Geralt looks and sounds like.
This season will also see Laurence Fishburne join as Regis, Sharlto Copley as Leo Bonhart and James Purefoy as Skellen. It’s the second to last season of the Netflix adaptation, and the streaming company has said that the two final seasons will cover the last three books in the series: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake. But, fans still have more Witcher content to look forward to yet outside of the show. The Witcher 4 (the game) is on the way, though we don’t yet have a release date.

Some much-needed upgrades are coming to Powerbeats Pro 2 with iOS 26
Fortunately for Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 owners, the FOMO from Apple’s announcement of its AirPods Pro 3 last week was short-lived. After introducing the latest Beats ear hook style headphones in February, Apple is introducing new features and updating the heart rate tracking functionality of the Powerbeats Pro 2 with the upcoming release of iOS 26.
With the latest iOS upgrade, Powerbeats Pro 2 integrates better with Apple’s Fitness app, giving users more accurate data and the choice of up to 50 different workout types. For Apple’s Fitness+ users, the Beats earbuds will also show the heart rate, calories burned and “Burn Bar” metrics in real time. Outside the Fitness app, iOS 26 will bring smaller improvements like being able to use a single earbud for heart rate monitoring, better accuracy when counting steps even when your iPhone isn’t on you and a new algorithm that churns out faster heart rate readings. To make your life easier, the updated Powerbeats Pro 2 will send you a notification to get a better fit for more accurate heart rate monitoring and can sense if you nod or shake your head in response to Siri asking you to answer an incoming call or hear a text.
All of these iOS 26 upgrades for the Powerbeats Pro 2 will mostly put it in line with the AirPods Pro 3 features when the update releases on September 15. However, in our review of the Beats earbuds, we found that they offered mediocre ANC performance. It’s worth noting that Android users for the Powerbeats Pro 2 won’t get many of the Apple-branded features that come with iOS 26.

America’s FTC Opens New Probe into Amazon and Google Advertising Practices
America’s Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether Amazon and Google misled advertisers placing ads on their websites, reports Bloomberg, and specifically whether the two companies “properly disclosed the terms and pricing for ads.”
The FTC is seeking details about Amazon’s auctions and whether it disclosed “reserve pricing” for some search ads — price floors that advertisers must meet before they can buy an ad, the people said. Separately, the FTC is examining practices by Google, including its internal pricing process and whether it increased the cost of ads in ways that weren’t disclosed to advertisers, the people said…
According to one of the people, the FTC’s latest investigation emerged from its earlier antitrust case. In that complaint, the agency alleges that Amazon litters its marketplace with irrelevant results for search queries, making it harder for shoppers to find what they are looking for and more expensive for sellers to use the platform. The practice effectively forces sellers to buy ads to make their product appear in response to consumer searches.

Can Lab-Grown Coral Restore Reefs Damaged By Climate Change?
Many coral reefs “have now turned ghostly white,” reports CBS News — and “a major culprit is climate change.”
SFGate adds that more than 50% of the world’s coral reefs have been lost, mostly over the past 10 years, according to coral reef scientist Rebecca Albright at the California Academy of Sciences. “If changes aren’t made soon, 90% to 99% of the coral reefs that are remaining could be deteriorated by 2050, Albright said…”
But CBS News notes that Albright’s lab is the first in America to successfully spawn coral to regenerate the reefs:
The lab is mastering the art and science of creating baby corals, and the scientists have brought their expertise into the wild. The location: the second-largest reef in the world, known as the Mesoamerican Reef, stretching some 700 miles along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras… Armed with test tubes, the scientists quickly dove into the water and collected the tiny packets of gametes. Back on land, the eggs were fertilized, incubated, and then brought back into the wild. “Then we planted over 3,000 baby corals back to the reef,” explained Albright. The baby corals are now two months old. The Roatan staff will dive in a few months to see how many survived.
Scientists are worried because bleaching events “are becoming more common,” notes SFGate, “happening more frequently and affecting more parts of the world… The most current event was confirmed on April 15, 2024, and is still ongoing, impacting approximately 84% of the world’s coral reefs as of August 31.
“It has been documented in at least 83 countries and territories.”

Google faces its first AI Overviews lawsuit from a major US publisher
Even though Google’s AI Overviews were introduced with a comically rocky start, it’s about to face a far more serious challenge. Penske Media, the publisher for Rolling Stone, Variety, Billboard and others, filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming the tech giant illegally powers its AI Overviews feature with content from its sites. Penske claimed in the lawsuit that the AI feature is also “siphoning and discouraging user traffic to PMC’s and other publishers’ websites,” adding that “the revenue generated by those visits will decline.”
The lawsuit, filed in Washington, DC’s federal district court, claims that about 20 percent of Google searches that link to one of Penske’s sites now have AI Overviews. The media company argued that this percentage will continue to increase and that its affiliate revenue through 2024 dropped by more than a third from its peak. Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said that the tech giant will “defend against these meritless claims” and that “AI Overviews send traffic to a greater diversity of sites.”
Earlier this year, Google faced a similar lawsuit from Chegg, an educational tech company that’s known for textbook rentals. Like Penske Media, this lawsuit alleged that Google’s AI Overviews hurt website traffic and revenue for Chegg. However, the Penske lawsuit is the first time that Google has faced legal action from a major US publisher about its AI search capabilities.
Beyond Google’s legal troubles, other AI companies have also been facing their own court cases. In 2023, the New York Times sued OpenAI, claiming the AI company used published news articles to train its chatbots without offering compensation. More recently, Anthropic agreed to pay a $1.5 billion settlement in a class action lawsuit targeting its Claude chatbot’s use of copyrighted works.

Microsoft Escapes EU Competition Probe by Unbundling Teams for Seven Years, Opening API
TechCrunch reports:
Thanks to a pledge to unbundle its corporate messaging app Teams from its productivity suites, Microsoft has managed to slip unscathed through a major antitrust investigation by the European Commission that could have resulted in massive fines for the tech giant.
The Commission on Friday okayed Microsoft’s concessions to address the EU’s competition concerns over the company including Teams along with the rest of its Office productivity suite for free, concluding a multi-year investigation that was sparked by complaints from rival office messaging app Slack in 2020. Microsoft has promised that for the next seven years, it will provide Microsoft 365 and Office 365 without Teams at a lower price and will let customers choose whether they want to pay more to add the collaboration app to the suites…
Microsoft is voluntarily offering some versions of both its productivity suites without Teams at a 50% lower price compared to versions that bundle the app, worldwide. And Microsoft dodged punitive measures and a big fine, as the Commission’s penalties for breaching competition rules can reach up to 10% of annual global revenue — which, considering the tech giant last year recorded $245 billion in revenue, would have been truckloads of money.
The article adds one more interesting detail. “The Commission has also managed to get Microsoft to agree to open up its APIs to enable interoperability for key features between its suite and third-party messaging and collaboration tools, as well as let them export their data out of teams for the next five years…” The Commission’s official announcement says this will “open up the market for other providers of communication and collaboration tools in Europe.”
And Microsoft will also allow customers with long-term licenses the option of switching to a suite switch without Teams…

Most Earth-Like Planet Yet May Have Been Found Just 40 Light Years Away
One of the worlds in the TRAPPIST-1 system, a mere 40 light-years away, just might be clad in a life-supporting atmosphere,” reports ScienceAlert.
“In exciting new JWST observations, the Earth-sized exoplanet TRAPPIST-1e shows hints of a gaseous envelope similar to our own, one that could facilitate liquid water on the surface.”
Although the detection is ambiguous and needs extensive follow-up to find out what the deal is, it’s the closest astronomers have come yet in their quest to find a second Earth… [T]he first step is finding exoplanets that are the right distance from their host star, occupying a zone where water neither freezes under extreme cold nor evaporates under extreme heat. Announced in 2016, the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 system was immediately exciting for this reason. The red dwarf star hosts seven exoplanets that have a rocky composition (as opposed to gas or ice giants), several of which are bang in the star’s habitable, liquid water zone…
Red dwarf stars are also much more active than Sun-like stars, rampant with flare activity that, scientists have speculated, may have stripped any planetary atmospheres in the vicinity. Closer inspections of TRAPPIST-1d, one of the other worlds in the star’s habitable zone, have turned up no trace of an atmosphere. But TRAPPIST-1e is a little more comfortably located, at a slightly greater distance from the star… [T]he spectrum is consistent with an atmosphere rich in molecular nitrogen, with trace amounts of carbon dioxide and methane.
This is pretty tantalizing. Earth’s atmosphere is roughly 78 percent molecular nitrogen. If the results can be validated, TRAPPIST-1e might just be the most Earth-like exoplanet discovered to date. That is not a small if, though. Luckily, more JWST observations are in the pipeline, and the researchers should be able to validate or rule out an atmosphere very soon.
After analyzing four transits of TRAPPIST-1e across TRAPPIST-1, “We are seeing two possible explanations,” says astrophysicist Ryan MacDonald of the University of St Andrews in the UK. “The most exciting possibility is that TRAPPIST-1e could have a so-called secondary atmosphere containing heavy gases like nitrogen. “But our initial observations cannot yet rule out a bare rock with no atmosphere…”
Astrophysicist Ana Glidden of MIT led the second team interpreting the results, and says “We are really still in the early stages of learning what kind of amazing science we can do with Webb. It’s incredible to measure the details of starlight around Earth-sized planets 40 light-years away and learn what it might be like there, if life could be possible there.”
“We’re in a new age of exploration that’s very exciting to be a part of.”
