AI Set To Consume Electricity Equivalent To 22% of US Homes By 2028, New Analysis Says

New analysis by MIT Technology Review reveals AI’s rapidly growing energy demands, with data centers expected to triple their share of US electricity consumption from 4.4% to 12% by 2028. According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory projections, AI alone could soon consume electricity equivalent to 22% of all US households annually, driven primarily by inference operations that represent 80-90% of AI’s computing power.

The carbon intensity of electricity used by data centers is 48% higher than the US average, researchers found, as facilities increasingly turn to dirtier energy sources like natural gas to meet immediate needs.

Tech giants are racing to secure unprecedented energy resources: OpenAI and President Trump announced a $500 billion Stargate initiative, Apple plans to spend $500 billion on manufacturing and data centers, and Google expects to invest $75 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025 alone. Despite their massive energy ambitions, leading AI companies remain largely silent about their per-query energy consumption, leaving researchers struggling to assemble what one expert called “a total black box.”

In-App Purchases Are Changing for Spotify Users on iOS

If you use Spotify to listen to audiobooks on your iPhone, you now have fewer hurdles to clear to purchase and download titles to your device. Apple has approved an update that allows Spotify users to view pricing and buy individual audiobooks as well as add “top-up” listening hours right from the iOS app.

How in-app purchases are changing on iOS

This change is the outcome of a recent court ruling that requires Apple to allow app developers to provide links to external sites outside of the App Store to make purchases. Previously, users had to seek out where to sign up for subscriptions—in an external browser, for example—or potentially pay a premium price to cover the App Store’s 15 to 30 percent cut.

In response, Spotify quickly updated its iOS app with links to its various subscription options under the Premium tab, which previously had simply acknowledged that such subscriptions existed and that users could find sign-ups through their web browser.

How to purchase audiobooks on Spotify

With the update, users will now see a Buy button under individual titles in the iOS app and will no longer need to make purchases on Spotify’s web player before returning to mobile to listen.

Spotify includes 15 hours of use-it-or-lose-it audiobook listening time with Premium plans and the separate Audiobooks Access subscription—you can now add “top-up” listening hours within the app as well. To manage your listening time on mobile, go to Profile > Settings and privacy > Account > Plan name > Manage audiobook time. Top-ups cost $13 for 10 hours.

Finally, if Spotify isn’t your go-to, check out our top picks for audiobook services.

Xbox Game Pass Retro Classics has over 50 old-school games for people over 50

Game Pass members can now play over 50 old-school games for free. Microsoft‘s Retro Classics is a library of old-school Activision and Blizzard games from the ’80s and ’90s, like Pitfall! and MechWarrior 2. You can play on Xbox consoles, PCs and supported cloud gaming devices.

Like Nintendo’s Switch Online classics, the Game Pass version includes save states. That should come in handy for some of the excruciatingly difficult ones. Although there’s no online multiplayer, you can play against friends locally in titles that support it.

Still from the classic graphical adventure game Police Quest.
Police Quest
Sierra / Microsoft

Retro Classics includes Atari-era games like the pioneering platformer Pitfall! and its sequel Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, the bomb-catching game Kaboom! and the shoot-’em-up River Raid. Fans of early adventure games also have plenty to chew on. There’s the groundbreaking text adventure Zork, as well as the Sierra classics Space Quest II and Police Quest. Just remember to connect a keyboard (or play on PC) for the latter three, or you won’t get far.

Microsoft says it will expand the collection over time, planning to eventually pass 100 games. GameSpot published a complete list of the 58 titles available at launch.

Retro Classics is available today for all Game Pass tiers. You can find the collection here or by searching for and installing it on your Xbox console or in the Xbox on PC app.

Why Does the US Always Run a Trade Deficit?

The U.S. trade deficit persists due to fundamental macroeconomic imbalances rather than just export shortfalls, according to Federal Reserve Bank of New York economist Thomas Klitgaard. His analysis shows the deficit reflects a persistent gap between domestic saving and investment spending, with the U.S. borrowing from foreign sources to fund domestic investment when savings fall short.

This macroeconomic reality means targeting specific trade categories won’t resolve the overall imbalance — even when the petroleum deficit disappeared by 2019 due to increased domestic production, the total trade deficit grew to $441 billion, consistent with a widening saving gap.

Bureau of Economic Analysis data reveals household saving has remained below pre-pandemic levels as consumers spend down accumulated savings from 2020-21, while business saving has remained relatively stable. Reducing the deficit would require significant macroeconomic adjustments, including higher domestic saving or reduced investment spending, which studies indicate would likely cause economic pain as demonstrated during the 2008 recession.

Incredible shrinking clownfish beats the heat

Pixar’s Finding Nemo immortalized the colorful clownfish, with its distinctive orange body and white stripes, in the popular imagination. Clownfish, like many other species, are feeling the stress of rising temperatures and other environmental stressors. Fortunately, they have a superpower to cope: They can shrink their body size during dangerous heat waves to substantially boost their odds of survival, according to a new paper published in the journal Science Advances.

“This is not just about getting skinnier under stressful conditions; these fish are actually getting shorter,” said co-author Melissa Versteeg, a graduate student at Newcastle University. “We don’t know yet exactly how they do it, but we do know that a few other animals can do this too.”

Many vertebrates have shown growth decline in response to environmental stressors, especially higher temperatures. Marine iguanas, for example, reabsorb some of their bone material to shrink when their watery habitat gets warmer, while young salmon have been known to shrink at winter’s onset. This can also happen when there is less food available. And social factors can also influence growth. When female meerkats, for example, are dominant, they have growth spurts, while a disruption in their social status can cause stunted growth in male cichlids

XP Farming on Zwift: the Definitive Guide to Earning More XP and Leveling Up Faster

XP (experience) points are what get you to higher levels in Zwift, and higher levels mean access to more virtual equipment and roads. Our calculations show that a rider can typically expect to earn 500-700XP per hour.

But are there ways Zwifters can earn XP faster? Of course! Here’s a definitive list of strategies for boosting your XP earnings.

Ride Short Climb Portals

Climb Portals can be “gamed” to earn XP at a higher-than-normal rate because each climb is broken up into 10 equidistant sections with a powerup arch at the end of each section. That means you can receive 10 powerups during the course of completing each Portal climb.

Doing repeats of a short Portal climb like Oude Kwaremont lets you more than double your typical rate of XP earning. In fact, this method is so effective that I wrote an entire post dedicated to it! Be sure to check out that post, as it contains helpful tips to maximize your XP earning.

Ride New Routes

The first time you complete an official Zwift route, you’ll earn the badge for that route, which includes an XP bonus equal to the regular XP you earned while riding the route. That means you effectively double your XP earning rate when riding new routes, assuming you actually finish the route.

Related: All About Cycling Route Achievement Badges in Zwift

Assuming you’re riding around 35kph, that’s a bonus of 700XP per hour if you’re just riding new routes. As of May 2025, if you tally up the XP bonuses from riding every route on Zwift, you get 102,217XP. That’s a whole lotta XP – enough to move you from level 30 to 45!

Note: a small number of event-only routes tdo not include an achievement badge/XP bonus. If you’re unsure, look up the route on our master list and see if it includes an achievement badge with bonus XP.

Ride a TT Bike

If you’re on a time trial frame, you won’t receive speed-boosting powerups when you ride through arches. Instead, you’ll receive the 10XP bonus. Every time!

Combine the TT bike with a short route that includes one or more lap banners and you’ll accumulate XP faster than you would riding a typical route on a road bike in the draft. Here are some suggested routes, sorted in order from frequent banners to least:

Ride Flat Routes

XP is based purely on distance (20XP per kilometer/32XP per mile), so you’ll accumulate it faster if you keep your speed as high as possible. All other things being equal (effort level, drafting status, etc), your average speed will always be faster on flat routes than hilly ones, which means you’ll earn more XP per minute on flat routes.

Join Double XP Events and Challenges

Sometimes, Zwift holds events where riders earn double XP. That is, each kilometer you ride earns you 40XP, and if you’re using imperial measurements you’ll get 64XP for each mile.

Tour of Watopia is a popular annual event that includes double XP. Zwift has also been holding “XP Express” events awarding double XP.

Find double XP events here: zwift.com/events/tag/doublexp

There are also various in-game Challenges that Zwift holds which include XP bonuses. This includes their recent “Route of the Week” rollout, as well as short-term mini challenges like “Hell of a Route Chaser Challenge“. Working these Challenges into your workout plans can quickly add 500-1000XP to your workout.

Participate In Group Rides

As I already mentioned, the faster you go, the faster you’ll earn XP. Participate in group rides to enjoy the increased speeds of the group draft, and watch that XP add up!

Hack Your Workout

When you do a structured workout in Zwift, XP is calculated differently than the standard 20XP/km distance-based method. I’ve already written about this thoroughly here, where I share some hacks to maximize XP earnings via workouts, including changing interval length, doing workouts up the Alpe then free-riding down, and using workouts for your easy rides since you’ll likely earn more XP than free-riding.

Related:
How Zwift Calculates XP for Cycling Workouts
Level Up Faster On Zwift: GPLama’s XP Farming Alpe Workout

An additional bonus related to doing workouts up the Alpe: the spinner at the top awards XP if it lands on a prize you’ve already received. You’ll get 1000XP if it lands on the Lightweight Meilenstein wheels and you already have them, or 250XP if it lands on anything else that you already have.

Enjoy the Downhills

Any cyclist worth their chamois knows you don’t end a ride at the top of the hill – you earned that descent, so enjoy it! Your route may end at the top of a hill, but go ahead and take that descent: you’ll earn XP for the distance with little or no extra work.

Earn Achievement Badges

There are lots of achievement badges in game. Many are visible under Menu>Badges, but there’s a whole list of hidden achievements as well. Every one of those achievements includes an XP bonus, so grab those badges!

Maintain Your Week Streak

Zwift rewards you with bonus XP when you ride at least once per week:

  • Week 1: you’ll earn 300XP just for starting your streak.
  • Week 2: extended your streak to 2 weeks? You’ll earn 400XP.
  • Week 3+: every time you extend your streak past week 2, you’ll earn a 500XP bonus.

Related: All About Week Streaks on Zwift

So this one’s easy: just make sure you ride at least 2km (1.25 miles) each week. This can take place on Zwift, or outside if you have your Wahoo or Garmin account connected to Zwift.

Extend your streak long enough and you can have a Scotty in your pocket!

Get On the (Rubber)Bandwagon

“Banded” rides in Zwift keep all riders together, regardless of effort level. As long as you keep pedaling, you’ll stay with the pack!

If you’re a rider who tends to rides at lower power (say, 1.5 W/kg or less), joining banded rides should significantly increase your average speed, which in turn will increase your XP earning rate.

See upcoming banded rides at ZwiftHacks >

Combining Strategies

For the ultimate in high-XP riding, combine two or more of the strategies above. (Simple example: choose a group ride on a route you haven’t completed.)

The achievement badges for multiple Volcano Circuit laps earn a big XP boost – you get bonuses for 5, 10, and 25 laps. The 25 lap bonus is 1000XP! Why not do a ride that gets all three, along with the 100km badge. Then keep going and get the 100 mile badge while you’re at it! Do it on a TT bike and you’ll be racking up XP points each time you ride through the lap banner.

30 of the Best Movies on Tubi

While other streaming services thrive on carefully selected and endlessly curated (meaning: limited) selections of movies, Tubi’s a bit different: It feels like the Wild West, with everything from originals; to popular hits; to critically acclaimed favorites; to the lowest-brow, lowest-budget movies you’ll find this side of an old Blockbuster. In that spirit, here’s a sampling of some of the best stuff currently streaming on Tubi, and it’s a wide variety—the streamer will not be pinned down. If you’re unfamiliar, Tubi is a free, ad-based service, but generally I find the ads to be less obnoxious and less frequent than on other, similar streamers.

Interstellar (2014)

Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending, but oddly plausible, sci-fi epic takes Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain on a hunt through space and time to find a new home for humans in a near-future during which we’ve made Earth unlivable. You can stream Interstellar here.

Color Out of Space (2019)

Nicolas Cage is at his Nic Cage-iest in this H. P. Lovecraft adaptation about a family’s descent into madness. A beautiful, horrifying, utterly unique sensory experience. You can stream Color Out of Space here.

Friday (1995)

An unquestioned classic of stoner comedy, Friday sees Ice Cube and Chris Tucker accidentally smoking weed that they were meant to sell. And who among us hasn’t? The two slackers set out to borrow or make the money back during a misadventure-packed Friday. You can stream Friday here.

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)

Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan (alongside Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis) led Everything to Oscar glory a couple of years back, with Yeoh starring as Evelyn Quan Wang, a middle-aged immigrant running a laundromat with her husband. An IRS audit leads to a trip through a wildly outlandish, and ultimately emotional, journey through a multiverse of possibilities. You can stream Everything Everywhere here.

Dune (1984)

You’ve probably seen the recent Denis Villeneuve adaptation, but you might be less familiar with this messy and fascinating take from director David Lynch. Kyle MacLachlan leads an all-star cast in a movie that doesn’t quite an achieve greatness, but nevertheless offers up a bevy of wild ideas, distinctive visuals, and Lynchian madness. You can stream Dune here.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Tubi offers up a better assortment of classics than many of the other streamers, most of which have shifted to a newer-is-better focus. Hot stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as a couple of jazz-age musicians who run afoul of a mob boss, deciding to escape by posing as members of an all-female band (one that, memorably, includes Marilyn Monroe). Director Billy Wilder pitches the farce just right, at the intersection between smart and silly. You can stream Some Like It Hot here.

Evil Bong (2006)

No socially redeeming value here, just a goofy comedy horror movie about a bong that transports smokers to another planet, one where they’re to be murdered by exotic dancers. Tommy Chong co-stars in this movie from Full Moon Features, purveyors of fine low-rent horror movies. You can stream Evil Bong here.

Ghost World (2001)

Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) face high school graduation, and a crush on Steve Buscemi, in Terry Zwigoff’s indie dark comedy. You can stream Ghost World here.

Donnie Darko (2001)

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this memorable emo mind-bender about a troubled teenager who dodges disaster thanks to a bit of sleepwalking. An instant cult classic, it’s the movie all the cool kids were talking about back in the day. You can stream Donnie Darko (director’s cut) here, or the theatrical version here.

Hollywood Shuffle (1987)

Robert Townsend directs himself as Bobby Taylor, a satire about the perils of navigating the Hollywood system for an actor simultaneously too black and not black enough for the tastes of studio bosses. Through elaborate fantasy sequences and parodies of popular movies, Townsend creates a sharp and often extremely funny sendup that’s (sadly) still relevant. You can stream Hollywood Shuffle here.

Barbarian (2022)

One of the more divisive horror movies of the past few years (I love it), Barbarian stars Georgina Campbell as a woman who rents an Airbnb only to have a man (Bill Skarsgård) show up claiming that he also has rented the house. He seems nice enough, so she lets him in—enough of a premise for a horror movie right there, but Barbarian has twists that you’ll never see coming. You can stream Barbarian here.

Showgirls (1995)

As with most of Paul Verhoeven’s other films, it’s possible to view his notoriously trashy film as either dark satire or unintended camp. It’s tremendous fun either way and, though it quickly gained a reputation as garbage, it’s far more watchable than many other better-reviewed films. You can stream Showgirls here.

Rec (2007)

This Spanish import is top-tier found footage, involving a group of firefighters on an emergency call who wind up trapped inside a building at the center of a creeping zombie infection. That limited, specific geography is key to the movie’s brisk, efficient, and nerve-jangling effectiveness. You can stream Rec here.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Astronaut Charlton Heston finds himself on an unknown (wink wink) planet in the distant future where he rather quickly finds himself in the power of the world’s ape overlords. From a slightly goofy premise came this dark, disturbing, and timely fable. You can stream Planet of the Apes here.

The Apartment (1960)

Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine star in this searing, bittersweet, but ultimately humane comedy. MacLaine’s Fran Kubelik is an elevator operator having an affair with the big boss at an insurance company, while Lemmon’s Bud Baxter gets ahead by loaning out his apartment to upper management for various extramarital assignations. The budding friendship between the two threatens both of their careers. You can stream The Apartment here.

Whale Rider (2002)

Pai is a 12-year-old Māori girl and the direct descendant of their tribe’s traditional notable ancestor, the Whale Rider—except that, traditionally, women can’t lead. Star Keisha Castle-Hughes became the youngest nominee for a Best Actress Oscar for her open, genuine performance. You can stream Whale Rider here.

The Descent (2006)

Getting lost in those caves is scary enough, even before we discover that we’re not alone down there. The ultimate in spelunking horror. You can stream The Descent here.

Menace II Society (1993)

A searing, raw portrait of urban violence in the 1990s, the Hughes Brothers’ film follows Caine Lawson (Tyrin Turner) and his friends as they struggle for a better life amid crime and poverty, but who find themselves drawn deeper into crime and cruelty. The performances here are all phenomenal. You can stream Menace II Society here.

Beauty Shop (2005)

This Barbershop spin-off follows widowed hairstylist Gina Norris starting over in Atlanta with her daughter, and opening her own shop when a job doesn’t pan out. Queen Latifah is as delightful as ever, and is joined by a great cast including Alfre Woodard, Della Reese, Alicia Silverstone, Andie MacDowell, Kevin Bacon, and Djimon Hounsou. You can stream Beauty Shop here.

Room 237 (2012)

This fascinating documentary explores, without judgement, the many (and often truly wild) theories and interpretations around Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Probably not what you’re after if you want a bit of film analysis, but as an exploration of conspiratorial thinking? You could do a lot worse. You can stream Room 237 here.

Terrifier (2016)

Damien Leone’s low-budget slasher series quietly build into a queasy empire, with the most recent film being a legit box office smash. Here, literal clown-from-hell Art stalks partygoer Tara Heyes and her sister Victoria (Scaffidi) on Halloween night. You can stream Terrifier here.

Return of the Living Dead (1985)

This horror comedy with punk style is both a knowing parody of zombie movies while also managing to be an impressively gory thriller in its own right that moves the whole genre forward. Plus, it’s got a great death-rock soundtrack. You can stream Return of the Living Dead here.

Frankenhooker (1990)

A disreputable and goofy but surprisingly effective horror comedy, Frankenhooker stars former Penthouse Pet Patty Mullen as the movie’s take on Mary Shelley’s monster, made in the image of a med student’s dead fiancée and built from sex workers. The style and special effects here are pretty great. You can stream Frankenhooker here.

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

One of the best anime films of all time, at least when it comes to sci-fi and cyberpunk, Ghost in the Shell boasts impeccable style in addition to the thoughtfulness and complexity of its story. Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg security agent hunting an enigmatic hacker known only as “the Puppet Master” in the rapidly approaching year 2029, a time when the rise of AI threatens even the idea of individual existence. You can stream Ghost in the Shell here.

The Leather Boys (1964)

A classic of British kitchen sink realism, a movement in the 1960s that saw hyperrealistic portraits of, often, angry teens and young people, The Leather Boys sees young couple Reggie and Dot becoming increasingly estranged when Reggie mostly wants to just hang out with his biker friends. Among those friends is Pete, who seems to be developing an attraction to Reggie that goes a bit beyond that of a typical biker bro. You can stream The Leather Boys here.

North by Northwest (1959)

One of Hitchcock’s best (and that’s saying quite a bit), North by Northwest is a nearly non-stop thrill ride, seeing Cary Grant’s Roger Thornhill hunted across the country by criminals who’ve mistaken him for someone else. It’s as funny as it is clever, and nearly impossible to stop watching once you’ve started. You can stream North by Northwest here.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

The sweetest, most charming movie about the romance between a man and his life-like love doll that you’re likely to encounter. You can stream Lars and the Real Girl here.

They Call Me Trinity (1970)

A classic spaghetti western, Trinity (kicking off a trilogy, appropriately enough), stars Terence Hill and Bud Spencer as brothers Trinity and Bambino, who help defend a Mormon settlement from bandits and a land-grabbing Major (Farley Granger). It’s a rare comedy to come out of Italy’s obsession with westerns, and a lot of fun for it. You can stream They Call Me Trinity here.

The Wiz (1978)

Long before Wicked reinvented (or at least reinterpreted) L. Frank Baum, the Broadway musical on which this movie is based imagined Dorothy Gale as a Black teacher from Harlem. The joyous film version is nearly a who’s who of Black talent in the 1970s: Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor all play roles, while Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, and Charlie Smalls all contributed to the music. You can stream The Wiz here.

Cabaret (1972)

Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey star in this essential musical about the good times and extravagant style of Weimar Germany giving way to the rising tide of fascism. You can stream Cabaret here.

Mario Kart World was initially planned for the original Switch

The upcoming Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World was originally intended for the OG Switch console, according to an interview with the game’s developers. This was the goal until the dev team realized that the console couldn’t handle it.

“It was difficult for us to incorporate everything we wanted, so we were always conscious of what we were giving up in return,” said programming director Kenta Sato. A big sticking point seemed to be that the original Switch would have had to run the game at 30FPS. Mario Kart games have always run at 60FPS, for obvious reasons. You can’t simulate speed without, uh, simulating speed.

Developers pecked away at the “tough situation” until finally deciding to create more DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a way to bide time as the team figured out what to do.

“As we’d decided to release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — Booster Course Pass, we thought that would give us a bit more time to continue development,” said producer Kosuke Yabuki. “That’s when the conversation of moving it to the Nintendo Switch 2 system came up, and this suddenly opened up a bunch of possibilities on what we could do. It was truly a ray of hope.”

This interview also revealed that the game has been in development since 2017, which is a heck of a long time. However, it makes a certain amount of sense given that the original Mario Kart 8 came out in 2014.

The upcoming racer was always set in an open world and it was never going to be called Mario Kart 9. The developers wanted to “take the series to the next level.” The big, connected world seems to do just that.

“I felt that in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we were able to perfect the formula that we’d been following in the series up to that point, where players race on individual courses,” Yabuki continued. “That’s why, this time, we wanted the gameplay to involve players driving around a large world, and we began creating a world map like this.”

I personally think the company made the right call by delaying this game until the Switch 2. Recent first-party Switch titles have experienced massive framerate issues, and there’s no way the console could have handled races with 24 participants. In any event, we only have a couple of weeks until we get to play Mario Kart World, if you’ve successfully reserved the Switch 2 for the June 5 launch.

OpenAI buys Jony Ive’s design startup for $6.5 billion

OpenAI is buying Jony Ive’s startup, io, for $6.5 billion, as first reported by The New York Times. The company confirmed the news in a blog post on its website headlined by the photo you see above, which is apparently real and not AI generated. As part of the deal, Ive and his design studio, LoveForm, will continue to work independently of OpenAI. However, Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan, who co-founded io with Ive, will become OpenAI employees, alongside about 50 other engineers, designers and researchers. In collaboration with OpenAI’s existing teams, they’ll work on hardware that allows people to interact with OpenAI’s technologies.

OpenAI has not disclosed whether the deal would be paid for in cash or stock. Per the Wall Street Journal, it’s an all-equity deal. Open AI has yet to turn a profit. Moreover, according to reporting from The Information, OpenAI agreed to share 20 percent of its revenue with Microsoft until 2030 in return for the more than $13 billion the tech giant has invested into it. When asked about how it would finance the acquisition, Altman told The Times the press worries about OpenAI’s funding and revenue more than the company itself. “We’ll be fine,” he said. “Thanks for the concern.” The deal is still subject to regulatory approval.

In an interview with The Times, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Ive, best known for his design work on the iPhone, said the goal of the partnership is to create “amazing products that elevate humanity.” Before today, Altman was an investor in Humane, the startup behind the failed Humane AI Pin. HP bought the company earlier this year for $116 million, far less than the $1 billion Humane had reportedly sought before the sale.

“The io team, focused on developing products that inspire, empower and enable, will now merge with OpenAI to work more intimately with the research, engineering and product teams in San Francisco,” OpenAI writes of the acquisition on its website. “As io merges with OpenAI, Jony and LoveFrom will assume deep design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI and io.”

According to The Times, OpenAI already had a 23 percent stake in io following an agreement the two companies made at the end of 2024. OpenAI is now paying approximately $5 billion to take full control of the startup. Whether this points towards physical OpenAI devices on the horizon, and if so what form they take, remains unclear. The description for the YouTube video you see above says, “Building a family of AI products for everyone.” Whatever comes out of the acquisition could take years to hit the market, and some of what Ive and his team do may never see the light of day.

This Sleep Number Bed Has Been Giving Me the Best Rest, and It’s 30% Off for Memorial Day

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

Bed-sharing couples rarely like the exact same kind of mattress, and that’s where the i8 Smart Bed shines. Each side is customizable, allowing each person to alter the mattress’ firmness at any time. Right now, Sleep Number is having a Memorial Day sale with discounts of up to 50% and free delivery. Its flagship product, the i8 Smart Bed, is 30% off. I’ve been loving mine, and it has changed both my and my partner’s sleep for the better.

These smart beds from Sleep Number aren’t cheap, but they’re supposed to last about twice what a regular mattress lasts, with a minimum of 15 years, according to Sleep Number’s warranty (regular mattresses last about seven to eight years). Aside from the adjustable firmness, a very cool feature is the bed adapts to your position to keep you comfortable, so if you change to sleeping on your side in the middle of the night, the bed will adjust the firmness so you don’t wake up with a sore shoulder

I’ve been using the i8 Smart Bed for nearly a year, and it has helped me learn a lot about my sleep over time. The companion app tracks how long it takes me to fall asleep, my restful sleep, restless sleep (how much tossing and turning I’m doing), and how long it takes me to get out of bed (I’ve been making a conscious effort now to get rid of doom scrolling in the morning). I also get a Sleep Number score that is based on many metrics to tell me the quality of the sleep I got that night. Based on my score, the app gives me recommendations to improve it.

You don’t need to buy the integrated base (which you have to buy separately) if you have a bed frame with a flat surface. If your frame has slats, they should be no more than two inches apart. There is an air pump that needs to be plugged into an outlet, and you’ll need space under or next to the bed to store it.

Verizon tries to get out of merger condition requiring it to unlock phones

Verizon petitioned the Trump administration to let it lock phones to its network for longer periods of time, making it harder for customers to switch to other carriers.

There are two rules that require Verizon to unlock phones more quickly than other major carriers. Verizon agreed to both rules and gained significant benefits in return—first in 2008 when it purchased licenses to use 700 MHz spectrum that came with open access requirements and in 2021 when it agreed to merger conditions in order to obtain approval for its purchase of TracFone.

The Biden-era Federal Communications Commission last year proposed a 60-day unlocking requirement that would apply to all wireless providers, which would have made AT&T and T-Mobile follow the same unlocking timeframe as Verizon. But now that the FCC is chaired by Republican Brendan Carr, it’s looking to eliminate telecom regulations instead of making them stricter. Verizon sees this as an opening to seek an end to its unlocking obligations.

OpenAI Acquires Jony Ive’s Startup in $6.5 Billion Deal To Create AI Devices

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, said Wednesday his firm was paying $6.5 billion to buy io, a one-year-old start-up created by Jony Ive, a former top Apple executive who designed the iPhone. From a report: The deal, which effectively unites Silicon Valley royalty, is intended to usher in what the two men call “a new family of products” for the age of artificial general intelligence, or A.G.I., which is shorthand for a future technology that achieves human-level intelligence.

The deal, which is OpenAI’s biggest acquisition, will bring in Mr. Ive and his team of roughly 55 engineers, designers and researchers. They will assume creative and design responsibilities across OpenAI and build hardware that helps people better interact with the technology. In a joint interview, Mr. Ive and Mr. Altman declined to say what such devices could look like and how they might work, but they said they hoped to share details next year. Mr. Ive, 58, framed the ambitions as galactic, with the aim of creating “amazing products that elevate humanity.”

I Love This Meat Thermometer so Much I Bought One for My Dad, and It’s on Sale

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

Just in time for Memorial Day grilling, barbecuing, and smoking, the thoughtful folks over at ThermoWorks have put together a sale that you won’t want to miss. Starting today, you can get my favorite meat thermometer 30% off. It’s the Thermapen One, and I like it so much, I even bought one for my dad.

I’ve been using the Thermapen One for about eight months now, and I don’t know how I ever hosted a Friendsgiving without it. I’d rather forget those days when I nearly roasted my own arm because some other crummy meat thermometer took forever to measure the temperature of my oven-roasted turkey. Though I primarily use the Thermapen One for meat, don’t limit yourself—this handy probe thermometer can be used to check the doneness of breads, cakes, and casseroles too.

The Thermapen One gives you an accurate reading in one second (hence the name). While that is absolutely fantastic, it’s the other features that set it apart. It has a hinged probe, so you can collapse it when it’s not in use. (It automatically shuts off when you fold the end in.) When you open it up, the digital display is backlit so you can easily see the reading. Best of all, the numbers rotate with the screen orientation. This sounds like an “okay, who cares” feature, but you’d be surprised how many weird angles you have to use to get to the center of a thigh or avoid hitting a turkey bone while trying to keep your knuckles from getting burned on a grill grate. A temperature reading that orients automatically right-side-up is extremely helpful.

My dad’s the grill guy in our family, and the quick reading is the main feature that drew him to this thermometer in the first place: No more waiting around for the temperature to finish climbing while you lose heat from your grill with the lid open. In fact, if you want to get ahead of Father’s Day shopping, this is a great opportunity to grab a deal, and you’ll feel proud of yourself for being so organized and thoughtful.

The Thermapen One is on sale through May 27, so if shipping times won’t get it to you by this weekend, at least you’ll have it to get you through the rest of grilling season.

Google talks up NotebookLM upgrades by making it talk up Google I/O 2025

Google used news from its I/O developer conference this year to show what NotebookLM can do. The AI-powered research and note-taking tool has been around for years, but the company has infused it with more and more features as its AI tech improved. To demonstrate those features, Google created a notebook filled with news from I/O 2025, including a YouTube video of the keynote (complete with a transcript of the whole event), press releases, blog posts and even product demonstrations. You can visit all of those one by one, since the company uploaded them as sources to the notebook, but you can also use the AI tool to digest all the information for you.

You can ask NotebookLM anything you want about the event in the chat box, so that you can quickly find details for whatever it is you want to know. When I asked it what is NotebookLM, for instance, it gave me a response that aligned with what was announced during the event. “According to Google’s announcements at I/O,” the tool responded, “…NotebookLM becomes an ‘expert’ by grounding its responses in the provided material and offering creative ways to transform information.”

Under the Studio section of its interface, you’ll be able to generate audio overviews that can give you a quick or a more comprehensive spoken summary of the information you’ve uploaded. You can also create a Mind Map, which visually summarizes uploaded sources, showing one main topic branching towards several smaller topics and relevant ideas. Mind Maps are meant to structure information in a way that’s easier to understand and remember. Google added a reminder to its announcement, however, that “like all AI, NotebookLM can generate inaccuracies,” which is something to keep in mind while using the tool.

Google has released an official app for the tool in time for I/O 2025, which you can now download on Android or iOS. To see the company’s I/O 2025 notebook, you’ll have to be signed into a Google account.
