Teen Survey Reveals Shocking Popularity Gap Between iPhone And Android
The Spring edition of the long-going Piper Sandler survey of teen spending habits and tech usage/preferences is out. The results show some consistent year-to-year trends, such as Apple’s dominance in tugging at teens’ heartstrings and their (parents’) wallets, and that Netflix and Nike are still their preferred go-to for media consumption

Quest v76 Adds Live Captions & No Longer Lets You Uninstall Horizon Worlds

Quest v76 adds Live Captions for any app, including VR, and no longer lets you uninstall Horizon Worlds.

As with all Meta Horizon OS updates, v76 will “roll out” gradually, so it may take a few days or even weeks for your headset to get the v76 update. Further, Meta rolls out some features separately to the main update itself, so even having the v76 update doesn’t guarantee having everything listed here yet.

Live Captions

Since v56 Quest has offered captions in select 2D apps in the system home space like Meta Quest TV and the store.

Now, with v76, the accessibility setting has been renamed to Live Captions, and it works in any app even immersive apps like VR games.

When enabled, you’ll see a small floating panel with automatic transcriptions for any audio in the app, including the voice chat from other people in multiplayer games. It’s similar to what Apple added in visionOS 2, except it doesn’t include microphone audio.

Horizon OS v76 also adds a new experimental option that downloads the AI live transcription model onto your headset, so that Live Captions are processed on-device.

Live Captions don’t show up in screenshots or video recordings.

Horizon Worlds Now Built-In

With v76, the Meta Horizon Worlds app has been renamed to just “Worlds”, and the option to uninstall it is gone.

Meta describes this as Horizon Worlds now being “integrated into the Horizon platform experience”. It’s unclear whether this means some of it has been moved into the OS on a software technology level, or whether it just refers to the inability to uninstall it.

We’ve been tracking Meta’s gradual merging of Horizon Worlds into the Quest system software for multiple years now.

In 2023 the company renamed the default Explore panel to Horizon Feed and started recommending worlds there, added a Worlds tab to the Library, and unified the text chat systems.

Last year, the Meta Quest smartphone companion app was rebranded to Meta Horizon, and it started pushing worlds more than apps on its default interface.

From Quest To Horizon: How Meta’s Shifting Priorities Are Affecting Developers
With growing concerns about declining sales and discoverability, UploadVR spoke with nearly two dozen VR studios to discuss the current state of shipping VR games on Quest.

Dozens of Quest app developers have reported reduced discoverability for their apps following these changes, and many users have told UploadVR they uninstalled Horizon Worlds to avoid world recommendations.

With Worlds now unable to be uninstalled, that is no longer an option.

System-Level Advertising ID

In v76, Meta says it’s also rolling out a unique device identifier that advertisers can use to “show you more relevant ads on Meta Horizon OS”.

“You can enable or disable your advertising ID at any time by going to Settings in your headset”, Meta says.

AMD Quietly Refreshes Ryzen 8000HX Dragon Range Laptop CPUs With These Specs
AMD is rolling out a new round of mobile processors to fuel presumably cheaper gaming laptops, and the timing couldn’t be better with so much uncertainty surrounding the tariffs situation. Unofficially, the new Ryzen 8000HX series processors are being called Dragon Range Refresh. That’s because they are an iterative upgrade (or rebadge, really)

Gas Boiler Fittings Outnumbered Heat Pumps By 15 To One in UK Last Year – Report

An anonymous reader shares a report: Gas boiler fittings outnumbered new heat pump installations by more than 15 to one last year, and only one in eight new homes were equipped with the low-carbon alternative despite the government’s clean energy targets.

Poorer households are also being shut out of the heat pump market as the grants available are inadequate and should be increased, according to a report by the Resolution Foundation thinktank. The UK has the slowest introduction of heat pumps in Europe: fewer than 100,000 were fitted last year, compared with 1.5m gas boilers. Most of the boilers were replacements for existing units, but new houses are still being built with gas as standard — only 13% of new homes came with heat pumps last year.

If the government is to meet its net zero targets, switching people to heat pumps will be essential: about 450,000 households will need to install them each year by 2030. But the grant available through the boiler upgrade scheme — $9,700 in England and Wales — still leaves homeowners paying about $7000 on average.

France to ban students from keeping smartphones in schools

The last decade or so has seen schools and governments alike working on a substantial question: To what degree should students be allowed access to their phones? France has been among those leading the charge, requiring smartphones to be turned off during school hours since 2018. Now, the country is taking things a step further, insisting that students leave their phone in lockers or pouches, The Guardian reports.

France’s education minister and former prime minister Élisabeth Borne announced the new regulation, which will go into effect in middle schools come September. “At a time when the use of screens is being widely questioned because of its many harmful effects, this measure is essential for our children’s wellbeing and success at school.”

The decision follows two key events, a pilot program reported on by multiple sources and published expert recommendations. The former involved 180 middle schools comprised of over 50,000 students. Over the last six months, participants have done a “digital pause,” putting their phones in a locker or pouch that is unlocked when they finish the day. Borne announced that the trial was successful in improving school’s atmospheres. She added that schools will choose whether to use lockers or pouches, costing them up to a few thousand euros (€3,000 equals $3,331, for example).

The 2024 report, commissioned by President Emmanuel Macron, issued recommendations including no smartphone use for children under 13 years of age and no “conventional” social media access until they reach 18. The recommendations, led by a neurologist and an addictions psychiatrist, additionally pushed for limited to no screen-time for children, depending on their age.

The UK and the US are among the other countries exploring similar school-based measures to France. In 2024, the UK government released guidance for schools on banning phones in educational spaces. Both New York and California’s governors have also supported measures to limit smartphone use in schools.

Phasmophobia Kicks Off Easter’s Cursed Hollow Event Later This Month

Ghost hunting horror game Phasmophobia kicks off its first event of the year on Steam and PlayStation VR2 next week.

Kinetic Games confirmed that Phasmophobia’s first event of the year is Cursed Hollow, which builds on the base game’s ghost-hunting gameplay, introducing eerie Easter-themed content. Starting on April 17, the Cursed Hollow invites those daring enough to seek Jackalope totems across nine of the game’s seasonally decorated maps, including the Bleasdale Farmhouse which recently got a refresh.

This upcoming event will run for three weeks, letting you complete both Personal and Community objectives to earn themed rewards.

“We’ve made some changes this year following direct feedback from our previous events; from the new reward split, to some interesting new gameplay modifiers,” said Daniel Knight, Kinetic Games Lead Developer and Director in a prepared statement.

This event aligns with Kinetic Games’ 2025 roadmap for Phasmophobia, which promises more events for Halloween and the 2025 Holiday season. The roadmap also includes an update to the Grafton Farmhouse, a new small map, and major gameplay updates to how players record evidence called ‘Chronicle’, as well as a player character overhaul.

Phasmophobia’s Cursed Hollow event starts on April 17, and will be available on Steam and PlayStation VR2.

How to Try Copilot’s New ‘Vision’ and File Search Updates

Microsoft announced a plethora of Copilot upgrades at the start of the week, and we’re now starting to see some of them roll out—to Windows Insiders, at least. The Copilot app for Windows has now been updated to support Copilot Vision and file search, so the AI bot is better able to interact with whatever’s on your PC.

Copilot Vision first appeared on the web last year, but it’s new to the Windows app: It essentially lets the AI “see” what’s happening on your computer, so you can ask it about websites you’re viewing, or documents you’re editing, or songs you’re listening to, without having to take a screenshot or do any copying or pasting.

It’s somewhat similar to the Windows Recall feature that remains in limited testing, and which also gives the operating system more access to what’s on your screen. This does of course raise a few worries around privacy, but Microsoft promises users stay in full control of what’s accessible, and that all data is deleted after every Copilot Vision session.

Microsoft imagines users taking advantage of Copilot Vision to chat through plans for a trip, or for help when shopping online. As the AI can see what you’re seeing, it’s able to pick out ideas and give feedback on what you’re talking about, with interactions primarily handled via voice.

Then there’s file search, which means Copilot can find, open, and chat about files stored locally on your system. You might want to look for your résumé, for example, or bring up a slideshow you were working on last month—all these requests can be handled using natural language queries.

You can even ask about the contents of your files—so you could, for example, get Copilot to pull out spending figures from a spreadsheet. Again, Microsoft says you’ll be in full control over what Copilot can and can’t access in terms of your files: Everything is going to be handled through the permissions configured in Copilot’s settings.

How to start testing

Eventually, these features will appear in the stable version of Windows for all users, though that may take a while (Microsoft hasn’t announced an exact timetable). In the meantime, you can test these new Copilot features early, if you’re prepared to sign up for the Windows Insider Program. You can do that for free here.

The Windows Insider Program is like any other beta testing program: You get access to new features earlier than everyone else, but there are likely to be a few more bugs that you come across. It’s generally not recommended to run Insider versions of Windows on a laptop or desktop that’s critical to your day-to-day computing.

Once you’re up and running as a Windows Insider, you’ll find you can sign up for the beta channel of Windows 11 through the Windows Update part of Settings in Windows. Shortly after, you’ll get a new download, which will install the beta version on your computer (you can switch back to the stable version any time you like).

With all that taken care of, you need the latest version of Copilot on your computer: Look for version 1.25034.133.0 or later on the Microsoft Store. Microsoft says these features will come to Insiders in the U.S. first, then be available to everyone else after that—with the features “gradually rolling out” over time.

Copilot Vision can be launched by clicking the glasses icon to the right of the main input box inside Copilot for Windows. You’re then prompted to indicate which app or browser window you want to share with Copilot, and you can then chat with the bot using your voice. Click the Stop or X buttons to end a session.

File search is built right into the Copilot app for Windows, so you can simply type out or speak out a query as you would in any other chat — something like “what were the places I shortlisted in my vacation plan document last week?” for example. As always with AI, I’d recommend double-checking the answers you get for anything important.

Nintendo Stockpiling Switch 2s In The U.S. Even Though It Could Still Be Selling Them At A Loss With Current Tariffs

The Switch 2 is shaping up to be one of the messiest console launches ever in the U.S., at least from Nintendo’s point of view. The company’s new $450 console is set to come out on June 5, but it’s also being forced to navigate a chaotic circus around tariffs that could torpedo the rollout at any moment. Bloomberg now…

Car safety experts at NHTSA, which regulates Tesla, axed by DOGE

Job cuts at the US traffic safety regulator instigated by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency disproportionately hit staff assessing self-driving risks, hampering oversight of technology on which the world’s richest man has staked the future of Tesla.

Of roughly 30 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration workers dismissed in February as part of Musk’s campaign to shrink the federal workforce, many were in the “office of vehicle automation safety,” people familiar with the situation told the Financial Times.

The cuts are part of mass firings by Doge that have affected at least 20,000 federal employees and raised widespread concern over potential conflicts of interest for Musk given many of the targeted agencies regulate or have contracts with his businesses.

Finally, The Monopoly High Heels You’ve Been Waiting For

Designed and sold by UK-based novelty footwear maker Irregular Choice, these are the $239 Roll The Dice high heels. In case you couldn’t tell, they’re Monopoly themed. I’m kidding, even people who have never heard of the game could tell you they’re Monopoly themed. It’s…hard to miss. Does anybody really love Monopoly this much? I always felt like everyone who liked playing Monopoly were either sadists who liked bankrupting their friends or people who wanted to practice cheating. Still, there’s no question these heels make a statement. What that statement is, I’m not sure, but I do hope it’s not directed at me on game night.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra Is at Its Lowest Price Ever Right Now

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

When Samsung dropped the Galaxy Watch Ultra last summer, it was clearly swinging at the Apple Watch Ultra crowd—people who run marathons for fun, hike trails that end in the clouds, or just want a tank of a smartwatch on their wrist. Now that the hype’s settled and the price has dropped to $378 (down from $649.99), its lowest yet according to price trackers, it’s a more interesting pick, especially if you’re big on the outdoors.

That said, the Galaxy Watch Ultra only comes in a 47mm size, which might feel chunky for some, but the build is solid. You get a 1.47-inch Super AMOLED display that’s bright even in direct sunlight, wrapped in Grade 4 titanium, with IP68 dust/water resistance. This thing isn’t just “rugged”—it’s designed for extremes, like high-altitude treks (up to 9,000 meters) and diving up to 330 feet underwater.

Where the Galaxy Watch Ultra shines is in how it handles long adventures without needing a pit stop. The LTE version means you can take calls, track GPS, and get alerts even if your phone’s back in the car. Battery life is impressive, too. With normal use, you’ll get about 60 hours, and pushing it with power-saving can stretch that to 100. That’s a big deal for multi-day hikers or anyone who forgets to charge stuff regularly. The built-in emergency siren is another thoughtful touch, especially if you’re out solo. And if you’re deep into wellness tracking, it’s got all the usual suspects—heart rate, blood oxygen, body temp—but adds AI-powered metrics and advanced sleep tracking that reviewers seem pretty impressed by (as evidenced in this “excellent” review by PCMag).

Still, there are a few things to keep in mind. Wear OS is smooth, but you’re getting Samsung’s flavor of it, so compatibility is better with Galaxy phones. There’s also no smaller size, so if you’ve got a smaller wrist or want something lighter, it could feel like overkill. If you’re just looking for a good smartwatch for casual workouts and everyday use, the Galaxy Watch 7 at $219.16 (down from $299.99) might suit you better.

Sticking Simpsons Character Stickers In Appropriate Locations

This is a video of Seattle based artist Rudy Willingham placing stickers of Simpsons characters around his neighborhood (Burger King appears to have been a goldmine of content) in places that are contextually appropriate for the characters’ faces or whatever they’re doing. That’s clever. I especially liked the one of Bart dropping the water balloon on Principal Skinner, but they’re all really great. Like dogs.

The Black Mirror game Thronglets is real and available for iOS and Android

Netflix has released a game called Thronglets based on episode seven of the latest season of Black Mirror. It’s like a game of Tamagotchi and Pokémon, with dark, existential themes like what you’d expect from a tie up for the series would be. Thronglets was developed by Night School, the same studio behind Oxenfree that Netflix had acquired in 2021. “Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing,” said Sean Krankel, the founder of Night School Studio, at the time.

In the series, Thronglets is at the center of episode seven’s story, which is set in the same universe as Netflix’s interactive movie Bandersnatch. It’s a long-lost game by Tuckersoft, the same gaming studio in the movie, that hasn’t been seen since it was cancelled in 1994. In the game, you’ll have to hatch, evolve and raise creatures called Thronglets, bathing them, feeding them and entertaining them as they multiply more quickly than gremlins. Netflix says the game is not really only about raising virtual creations, though, but about “exploring the depths of human nature and the consequences of our digital obsessions.”

When you build groups of Thonglets known as a Throng, you can unlock video fragments of a documentary titled Ritman Retrospective. The videos are from a series of interviews with Tuckersoft chief Mohan Thakur (Asim Chaudhry) and the game’s creator Colin Ritman (Will Poulter). At the end of the game, you’ll get a personality test result that you can share on your socials. Thronglets, like Netflix’s other games, are free to play on its iOS and Android app for anybody who has an account. It comes after the company’s first gaming boss Mike Verdu left the company and after it announced that it will put a focus on party and narrative games. The new season of Black Mirror arrives on the streaming service today.
